Microstructural Evolution of Solid-solution-treated Zn-22Al in the Semisolid State

The effect of solid-solution-treatment on the semisolid microstructure of Zn-22Al with developed dendrites was investigated. Forming Zn-22Al products by semisolid metal processing offers significant advantages, such as reductions in macro-segregation, porosity and forming costs. Thermal and rnicrostructural analyses of the formed Zn-22Al alloy were performed by differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. The changes in the microstructures and phase transformation in response to various solid- solution-treatments were analysed. In this study, as-cast samples were held isothermally at 330 ℃ for 0.5- 5 h and then partially remelted at a semisolid temperature of 438 ℃ for 1 h to produce a solid-globular grain structure in a liquid matrix. A non-dendritic semisolid microstructure could not be obtained when the traditionally cast Zn 22Al alloy with developed dendrites was subjected directly to partial remelting. After solid-solution-treatment at 330 ℃, the black interdendritic eutectics were dissolved, and the dendritic structures gradually transformed into uniform β structures when the treatment time was increased. The coarsened and merged dendrites were separated as a result of penetration by the liquid phase and melting of the residual eutectic at sites along the former grain boundaries. The microstructure of the solid-solution- treated sample transformed into a small globular structure; the best shape factor of 0.9, corresponding to a particle size of 40 ± 16 μm, is achieved when the sample was treated for 3 h followed by direct partial remelting into its semisolid zone.

Incidence and risk factors for the development of anemia following gastric bypass surgery

AIM:To evaluate the incidence and risk factors for the development of anemia after RouxenY gastric bypass (RYGB).METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing RYGB from january 2003 to November 2007 was performed. All patients had a preoperative body mass index > 40 kg/m2. A total of 206 patients were evaluated. All patients were given daily supplements of ferrous sulfate tablets for 2 wk following their operation. Hematological and metabolic indices were routinely evaluated following surgery. Patients were followed for a minimum of 86 ***: There were 41 males and 165 females with an average age of 40.8 years. 21 patients (10.2%) developed postoperative anemia and 185 patients (89.8%) did not. Anemia was due to iron deficiency in all cases. The groups had similar demographics, surgical procedure and comorbidities. Menstruation (P = 0.02) and peptic ulcer disease (P = 0.01) were risk factors for the development of postoperative ***: Iron deficiency anemia is frequent. RYGB surgery compounds occult blood loss. Increased ferrous sulfate supplementation may prevent iron depletion in populations at increased risk.

Effect of malathion on the male reproductive organs of earthworms, Eisenia foetida

Aim: To observe the cytotoxic effect of the organophosphate insecticide malathion in the reproductive tissues of the earthworms, Eisenia foetida. Methods: Worms were nourished in soil treated with malathion at single sub-lethal doses of 0, 80, 150, 300 and 600 mg-kg^(-1) soil. (LD_(50) = 880 mg kg^(-1) soil) and evaluated on days 1, 5, 15 and 30 after exposure. The body weights were recorded and male reproductive organs evaluated. Results: Malathion-treated animals showed a significant reduction in body weight in a dose-dependent manner. Malathion treatment modified the disposition of spermatozoa in the basal epithelium of the spermatheca. The Br-deoxyuridine test showed a significant rise in cells in phase S on days 5 and 15. Also, a higher percentage of spermatogonia with fragmented DNA were observed by means of the TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) technique in the spermatheca of treated animals. Conclusion: Treatment with malathion decreased the body weight and the spermatic viability in spermatheca, altering the cell proliferation and modifying the DNA structure of spermatogonia.

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy subtypes First-reported cohort from northeastern China

The relative frequencies of different subtypes of limb-girdle muscular dystrophies vary widely among different populations. We estimated the percentage of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy subtypes in Chinese people based on 68 patients with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy from the Myology Clinic, Neurology Department, First Hospital of jilin University, China. A diagnosis of calpainopathy was made in 12 cases （17%）, and dysferlin deficiency in 10 cases （15%）. Two biopsies revealed α-sarcoglycan deficiency （3%）, and two others revealed a lack of caveolin-3 （3%）. A diagnosis of unclassified limb-girdle muscular dystrophy was made in the remaining patients （62%）. The ap-pearances of calpain 3- and dysferlin-deficient biopsies were similar, though rimmed vacuoles were unique to dysferlinopathy, while inflammatory infiltrates were present in both these limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2D biopsies. Macrophages were detected in seven dysferlinopathy biop-sies. The results of this study suggest that the distribution of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy sub-types in the Han Chinese population is similar to that reported in the West. The less necrotic, re-generating and inflammatory appearance of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2A, but with more lobulated fibers, supports the idea that calpainopathy is a less active, but more chronic disease than dysferlinopathy. Unusual features indicated an extended limb-girdle muscular dystrophy disease spectrum. The use of acid phosphatase stain should be considered in suspected dysferlinopathies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to define the relative proportions of the various forms of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy in China, based on protein testing.

Innate immune responses induced by lipopolysaccharide and lipoteichoic acid in primary goat mammary epithelial cells

Background: Innate immune responses induced by in vitro stimulation of primary mammary epithelial cells(MEC) using Gram-negative lipopolysaccharide(LPS) and Gram-positive lipoteichoic acid(LTA) bacterial cell wall components are well-characterized in bovine species. The objective of the current study was to characterize the downstream regulation of the inflammatory response induced by Toll-like receptors in primary goat MEC(pgMEC). We performed quantitative real-time RT-PCR(qPCR) to measure mRNA levels of 9 genes involved in transcriptional regulation or antibacterial activity: Toll-like receptor 2(TLR2), Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4), prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2(PTGS2), interferon induced protein with tetratricopeptide repeats 3(IFIT3), interferon regulatory factor 3(IRF3), myeloid differentiation primary response 88(MYD88), nuclear factor of kappa light polypeptide gene enhancer in B-cells 1(NFKB1), Toll interacting protein(TOLLIP), and lactoferrin(LTF). Furthermore,we analyzed 7 cytokines involved in Toll-like receptor signaling pathways: C-C motif chemokine ligand 2(CCL2), C-C motif chemokine ligand 5(CCL5), C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 6(CXCL6), interleukin 8(CXCL8), interleukin 1 beta(IL1 B), interleukin 6(IL6), and tumor necrosis factor alpha(TNF).Results: Stimulation of pgMEC with LPS for 3 h led to an increase in expression of CCL2, CXCL6, IL6, CXCL8,PTGS2, IFIT3, MYD88, NFKB1, and TLR4(P < 0.05). Except for IL6, and PTGS2, the same genes had greater expression than controls at 6 h post-LPS(P < 0.05). Expression of CCL5, PTGS2, IFIT3, NFKB1, TLR4, and TOLLIP was greater than controls after 3 h of incubation with LTA(P < 0.05). Compared to controls, stimulation with LTA for 6 h led to greater expression of PTGS2, IFIT3, NFKB1, and TOLLIP(P < 0.05) whereas the expression of CXCL6, CXCL8, and TLR4 was lower(P < 0.05). We report on a case of an 85-year old man with an unusual presentation of small bowel obstruction. A palpable mass on digital rectal examination was subsequently visualised endoscopically with the appearance of a haematoma. The presence of a rectal mass as a presenting sign for small bowel obstruction is highly unusual and unreported in the literature.

Growth of ZnO self-converted 2D nanosheet zeolitic imidazolate framework membranes by an ammoniaassisted strategy

Shaping crystalline porous materials such as metal organic frameworks （MOFs） and zeolites into two-dimensional （2D） nanosheet forms is highly desirable for developing high-performance molecular sieving membranes. However, conventional exfoliation-deposition is complex and challenging for the large-scale fabrication of nanosheet MOF tubular membranes. Here, for the first time, we report a direct growth technique by ZnO self-conversion and ammonia assistance to fabricate zeolitic imidazolate framework （ZIF） membranes consisting of 2D nanosheets on porous hollow fiber substrates; the membranes are suitable for large-scale industrial gas separation processes. The proposed fabrication process for ZIF nanosheet membranes is based on the localized self-conversion of a pre-deposited thin layer of ZnO in a ligand solution containing ammonium hydroxide as a modulator. The resulting ZIF 2D nanosheet tubular membrane is highly oriented and only 50 nm in thickness. It exhibits excellent molecular sieving performance, with high H2 permeance and selectivity for H2/CO2 separation. This technique shows great promise in MOF nanosheet membrane fabrication for large-scale molecular sieving applications.
