The Representation of Soil moisture−Atmosphere Feedbacks across the Tibetan Plateau in CmIP6

Thermal processes on the Tibetan Plateau(TP)influence atmospheric conditions on regional and global scales.Given this,previous work has shown that soil moisture−driven surface flux variations feed back onto the atmosphere.Whilst soil moisture is a source of atmospheric predictability,no study has evaluated soil moisture−atmosphere coupling on the TP in general circulation models(GCms).In this study,we use several analysis techniques to assess soil moisture−atmosphere coupling in CmIP6 simulations including:instantaneous coupling indices;analysis of flux and atmospheric behaviour during dry spells;and a quantification of the preference for convection over drier soils.Through these metrics we partition feedbacks into their atmospheric and terrestrial components.Consistent with previous global studies,we conclude substantial inter-model differences in the representation of soil moisture−atmosphere coupling,and that most models underestimate such feedbacks.Focusing on dry spell analysis,most models underestimate increased sensible heat during periods of rainfall deficiency.For example,the model-mean bias in anomalous sensible heat flux is 10 W m−2(≈25%)smaller compared to observations.Deficient dry-spell sensible heat fluxes lead to a weaker atmospheric response.We also find that most GCms fail to capture the negative feedback between soil moisture and deep convection.The poor simulation of feedbacks in CmIP6 experiments suggests that forecast models also struggle to exploit soil moisture−driven predictability.To improve the representation of land−atmosphere feedbacks requires developments in not only atmospheric modelling,but also surface processes,as we find weak relationships between rainfall biases and coupling indexes.

Investigations on the Optimization of Contacts Barrier Height for the Improved Performance of ZnO/CdS/CZTS Solar Cells

The numerical simulations were performed using the AmPS-1D simulator to study the effects of the CZTS as an absorber layer and the contacts’barrier height on the performance of four ZnO/CdS/CZTS solar cells.To obtain the best cell performances,the barrier heights of the back and front contacts were adjusted between 0.01,0.77,0.5,and 1.55 eV,respectively.For simulations,we used the lifetime mode,and the device performances were evaluated under Am1.5 illumination spectra.We found that the efficiency,fill factor,and open-circuit voltage were almost constant at a front contact barrier height of less than 0.31 eV.The short-current density was not affected by the front contact barrier height.The back contact material had a significant impact on the CZTS cells parameters.The best performance was obtained for the CZTS550 cell with JSC=29.53 mA/cm2,VOC=1.07 V,FF=0.88,andη=28.08%at barrier heights of 0.31 and 1.55 eV for front and back contacts,respectively.The conduction band offset at the CZTS550/CdS hetero-junction was found to be spike-like with 0.21 eV.The obtained conversion efficiency is comparable to those previously reported in the literature.

Functional and radiological outcomes of different pin configuration for displaced pediatric supracondylar humeral fracture:A retrospective cohort study

BACKGROUND The most widely accepted treatment for pediatric supracondylar humeral fracture is closed reduction and percutaneous pinning(CRPP). However, there is debate regarding the technique that is utilized, whether crossed or lateral pinning, and the number of pins used.AIm To compare the functional and radiological outcomes of lateral and cross pinning in the management of humeral supracondylar fracture.mETHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on 101 patients who were surgically managed by either one of the CRPP techniques from 2015 to 2019. Several clinical parameters were taken into account, including pre-and post-intervention Baumann angle, as well as scores for pain, range of motion, function, and stability. Statistical analysis was performed to study the outcomes of the utilized techniques.RESULTS Amongst our study sample, which included 63 males and 38 females with a mean age of 5.87 years, about one-third of the patients underwent crossed pinning fixation configuration and the remaining two-thirds were managed by lateral pinning configuration. Similar results were obtained in the two groups with no statistical difference regarding mayo elbow performance scores(mEPS) and Baumann angle. The mean mEPS in the lateral and crossed pinning groups were 93.68 + 8.59 and 93.62 + 9.05, respectively. The mean Baumann angle was 72.5° + 6.46 in the lateral group and 72.3° + 4.70 in the crossed-pinning group(P = 0.878).CONCLUSION Both lateral pinning and crossed pinning fixation configuration for displaced pediatric supracondylar humeral fractures provide similar functional and radiological outcomes.

Optimal Coordinated Operation of Distributed Static Series Compensators for Wide-area Network Congestion Relief

Relieving network congestions is a critical goal for the safe and flexible operation of modern power systems, especially in the presence of intermittent renewables or distributed generation. This paper deals with the real-time coordinated operation of distributed static series compensators(DSSCs) to remove network congestions by suitable modifications of the branch reactance. Several objective functions are considered and discussed to minimize the number of the devices involved in the control actions, the total losses or the total reactive power exchanged, leading to a non-convex mixed-integer non-linear programming problem. Then, a heuristic methodology combining the solution of a regular NLP with k-means clustering algorithm is proposed to get rid of the binary variables, in an attempt to reduce the computational cost. The proposed coordinated operation strategy of the DSSCs is tested on several benchmark systems, providing feasible and sufficiently optimal solutions in a reasonable time frame for practical systems.

Drought stress has become more common in recent years as a result of climate change impacts on the production of banana crops and other fruit trees.The growth and productivity of musa spp are severely impacted by the gradual degradation of water resources and the erratic distribution pattern of annual precipitation amount.The aim of the work includes increased drought tolerance in light of water scarcity in the world as a result of the bananas’being gluttonous for water needs.This investigation was carried out from 2019 to 2020 to study the effect of potassium silicate on morphological growth and biochemical parameters of musa acuminata L under drought stress by PEG.As a result,drought stress reduced the morphological characteristics such as shoots number,shoot length,roots number,and survival percentage and biochemical characteristics such as chlorophyll a,b,carotenoids,stomatal status,and RWC.While proline content increased in the leaf of m.acuminata L.media complemented with K2SiO3(2 to 6 mm)either individually or in combination with PEG led to an improvement in all morphological and biochemical characteristics.The activities of CAT,POD,and PPO enzymes increased significantly compared to control.Furthermore,the lowest PPO,CAT,and POD activity were achieved.Additionally,K2SiO3 treatments under drought stress successfully enhanced the leaf stomatal behavior.Our results suggest that K2SiO3 can help to maintain plant integrity in the tested cultivar under drought stress.

Introduction: The acronym SAPHO (Synovitis, Acne, Pustulosis, Hyperostosis and Osteitis) is a syndrome combining osteoarticular and cutaneous manifestations. It occurs mainly between the ages of 30 and 50. Sternocostoclavicular hyperostosis is one of the main distinguishing features. We report a case of SAPHO in Dakar diagnosed by bone scintigraphy. Observation: 28-year-old Senegalese women presented with left shoulder pain and relative functional impotence for over 2 years. Examination revealed right sternoclavicular hyperostosis and left shoulder pain on palpation. Questioning revealed a history of acne and hyperostosis of the right first toe. Bone scintigraphy, performed after injection of 630 mBq of 99mTc-HmDP, revealed: hyperfixation of the bilateral (right++) manubrio-sternal and sternoclavicular junction, producing the classic bull’s horn image;hyperfixation of the left shoulder with an inflammatory appearance;hyperfixation of the sacroiliac joints suggestive of bilateral sacroiliitis;hyperfixation of the right first toe;two mandibular hyper fixations probably related to dental damage. This scintigraphic appearance in one was strongly suggestive of SAPHO syndrome. Conclusion: SAPHO syndrome, related to spondyloarthropathy, associates cutaneous and osteoarticular signs. It is characterized by frequent delays in diagnosis due to poor recognition. Soy is an invaluable diagnostic tool, enabling us to assess the extent of the disease and its evolution.

Outcomes after combined excisional goniotomy and manual small incision cataract surgery

AIm: To report the long-term outcomes of combined excisional goniotomy and manual small incision cataract surgery(mSICS).mETHODS: This is a retrospective case series of patients with open angle glaucoma and visually significant cataracts that underwent combined excisional goniotomy and mSICS with one-year follow-up. The medical history, demographic information, and clinical characteristics of each case were recorded. Data regarding changes in vision, intraocular pressure(IOP), the number of glaucoma medications, and the evolution of the disease after surgery were reported. RESULTS: Three patients, with open angle glaucoma and cataracts underwent combined excisional goniotomy and mSICS without adverse events. All patients had improvement in vision compared to baseline measurements. The range of IOP at baseline was from 14 to 18 mm Hg and decrease to a range of 10 to 14 mm Hg after one year of follow-up. Additionally, two patients also decreased their dependence on IOP-lowering medications at the last follow up visit with one patient maintaining baseline level of medication use.CONCLUSION: A combination of excisional goniotomy and mSICS illustrates both the safety and efficacy to treat patients with visually significant cataract and glaucoma. This procedure allows for a more cost-effective surgical approach that matches the needs of resource strained territories around the globe.

Vehicle electrification has emerged as a global strategy to address climate change and emissions externalities from the transportation sector.Deployment of charging infrastructure is needed to accelerate technology adoption;however,managers and policymakers have had limited evidence on the use of public charging stations due to poor data sharing and decentralized ownership across regions.In this article,we use machine learning based classifiers to reveal insights about consumer charging behavior in 72 detected languages including Chinese.We investigate 10 years of consumer reviews in East and Southeast Asia from 2011 to 2021 to enable infrastructure evaluation at a larger geographic scale than previously available.We find evidence that charging stations at government locations result in higher failure rates with consumers compared to charging stations at private points of interest.This evidence contrasts with predictions in the U.S.and European markets,where the performance is closer to parity.We also find that networked stations with communication protocols provide a relatively higher quality of charging services,which favors policy support for connectivity,particularly for underserved or remote areas.

In recent years,the number of Gun-related incidents has crossed over 250,000 per year and over 85%of the existing 1 billion firearms are in civilian hands,manual monitoring has not proven effective in detecting firearms.which is why an automated weapon detection system is needed.Various automated convolutional neural networks(CNN)weapon detection systems have been proposed in the past to generate good results.However,These techniques have high computation overhead and are slow to provide real-time detection which is essential for the weapon detection system.These models have a high rate of false negatives because they often fail to detect the guns due to the low quality and visibility issues of surveillance videos.This research work aims to minimize the rate of false negatives and false positives in weapon detection while keeping the speed of detection as a key parameter.The proposed framework is based on You Only Look Once(YOLO)and Area of Interest(AOI).Initially,themodels take pre-processed frames where the background is removed by the use of the Gaussian blur algorithm.The proposed architecture will be assessed through various performance parameters such as False Negative,False Positive,precision,recall rate,and F1 score.The results of this research work make it clear that due to YOLO-v5s high recall rate and speed of detection are achieved.Speed reached 0.010 s per frame compared to the 0.17 s of the Faster R-CNN.It is promising to be used in the field of security and weapon detection.

Uremic Bleeding in 2 Patients with Dieulafoy’s Lesion: Case Report and Literature Review

Dieulafoy’s lesions are rare vascular malformations of the gastrointestinal tract. A Dieulafoy’s lesion is an aberrant vessel that does not reduce in caliber when it extends from the submucosa to the mucosa. Damage to this artery can cause severe and intermittent arterial bleeding from small vascular stumps that are difficult to visualize. Furthermore, these catastrophic bleeding episodes frequently result in hemodynamic instability and the need for transfusion of multiple blood products. Recently, uremic syndrome has been identified as a risk factor for gastric mucosal lesions. We present two clinical cases of acute digestive bleeding due to Dielafoy lesion with chronic kidney disease as the main cause, where two different therapies were performed endoscopically. We concluded with the results of our patients that the best therapy was the application of the hemostatic hemoclip on the injury vs the injection with adrenaline on the wound site. Uremia is identified as a risk factor for upper gastrointestinal bleeding in patients with pre-existing Dieulafoy’s lesion, as well as a higher incidence of new bleeding.
