Collaborative Efforts and Strategies for Cholera Outbreak Control in Garissa County, Kenya: Implementation of Water Quality monitoring Interventions

A multi-faceted Case Area Targeted Intervention (CATI) approach emphasizing the integration of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) interventions and Oral Cholera Vaccine (OCV) campaign was employed to respond to the outbreak of cholera in Garissa County. Drinking water sources in areas heavily impacted by cholera were systematically mapped and tested for microbiological quality. The quality assessment was carried out in April 2023 during an ongoing cholera outbreak in the county. A total of 109 samples were collected and tested for thermotolerant coliforms and other in situ parameters. The finding revealed that more than 87% of the samples did not meet the World Health Organization (WHO) standard for thermotolerant coliforms;and 30% had turbidity values above the recommended threshold values. None of the 109 samples had any traceable residual chlorine. Following these findings, the county government implemented the targeted interventions which resulted in a positive impact in the fight against cholera. The WHO supported key interventions which included capacity building in water quality monitoring and prepositioning of critical WASH commodities to the cholera affected areas.

The growing need for renewable energy and zero carbon dioxide emissions has fueled the development of thermoelectric generators with improved power generating capability.Along with the endeavor to develop thermoelectric materials with greater figures of merit,the geometrical and structural optimization of thermoelectric generators is equally critical for maximum power output and efficiency.Green energy strategies that are constantly updated are a viable option for addressing the global energy issue while also protecting the environment.There have been significant focuses on the development of thermoelectric modules for a range of solar,automotive,military,and aerospace applications in recent years due to various advantages including as low vibration,great reliability and durability,and the absence of moving components.In order to enhance the system performance of the thermoelectric generator,an artificial neural network(ANN)based algorithm is proposed.Furthermore,to achieve high efficiency and system stability,a buck converter is designed and deployed.Simulation and experimental findings demonstrate that the suggested method is viable and available,and that it is almost similar to the real value in the steady state with the least power losses,making it ideal for vehicle exhaust thermoelectric generator applications.Furthermore,the proposed hybrid algorithm has a high reference value for the development of a dependable and efficient car exhaust thermoelectric generating system.

Exact Solutions and Finite Time Stability of Linear Conformable Fractional Systems with Pure Delay

We study nonhomogeneous systems of linear conformable fractional differential equations with pure delay.By using new conformable delayed matrix functions and the method of variation,we obtain a representation of their solutions.As an application,we derive a finite time stability result using the representation of solutions and a norm estimation of the conformable delayedmatrix functions.The obtained results are new,and they extend and improve some existing ones.Finally,an example is presented to illustrate the validity of our theoretical results.

more than 200000 hospital admissions happen per year for acute pancreatitis and more than 50000 for chronic pancreatitis in the United States of America.Necrotizing pancreatitis accounts for 20%-30%of the cases.One-quarter of the patients with pancreatitis develop vascular complications,which carries a high mortality.This mini-review will address these complications that can help primary care physicians and hospitalists in managing their patients effectively.

Functional statistics is a new technique for dealing with data thatcan be viewed as curves or images. Parallel to this approach, the Near-InfraredReflectance (NIR) spectroscopymethodology has been used in modern chemistryas a rapid, low-cost, and exact means of assessing an object’s chemicalproperties. In this research, we investigate the quality of corn and cookiedough by analyzing the spectroscopic technique using certain cutting-edgestatistical models. By analyzing spectral data and applying functional modelsto it, we could predict the chemical components of corn and cookie dough.Kernel Functional Classical Estimation (KFCE), Kernel Functional QuantileEstimation (KFQE), Kernel Functional Expectile Estimation (KFEE),Semi-Partial Linear Functional Classical Estimation (SPLFCE), Semi-PartialLinear Functional Quantile Estimation (SPLFQE), and Semi-Partial LinearFunctional Expectile Estimation (SPLFEE) are models used to accuratelyestimate the different quantities present in Corn and Cookie dough. Theselection of these functional models is based on their ability to constructa forecast region with a high level of confidence. We demonstrate that theconsidered models outperform traditional models such as the partial leastsquaresregression and the principal component regression in terms of predictionaccuracy. Furthermore, we show that the proposed models are morerobust than competing models such as SPLFQE and SPLFEE in the sensethat data heterogeneity has no effect on their efficiency.

The fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) is one of the most important pests in all mango-producing areas, particularly in West Africa. In Senegal, O. americanum leaves have been used for several years to control this fly. However, to our knowledge, no chemical studies have been carried out. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil of O. americanum leaves collected in Senegal and Gambia. The essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of these leaves is analyzed by GC/FID and GC/mS. Yields of essential oils from O. americanum leaves are 3.84% and 2.13%, respectively. Analysis of these essential oils by GC/FID and GC/mS allowed the identification of 23 compounds representing almost 100% of the total compositions. These essential oils are mainly dominated by methyleugenol (72.0% and 75.8%, respectively). Other components in significant percent are trans-β-caryophyllene (13.9% and 13.0%, respectively), germacrene D (4.1% and 3.7%, respectively), β-elemene (3.3% and 0.9%, respectively). Due to the high methyleugenol content, this study explains the attractive potential of O. americanum towards B. dorsalis. In perspective, we plan to evaluate the attractive effect of the essential oil and leaf powder of O. americanum against B. dorsalis, a real pest of mango orchards in Senegal.

Granulosa cell tumor(GCT)is the most common sex cordstromal tumor,comprising 5%of all ovarian malignancies[1].The disease course is indolent,and the majority of cases present at stage 1.However,metastases may develop with potential sites being peritoneum,lung,brain,liver and bone[2].Due to the rarity of the disease,published evidence for management of granulosa cell tumor liver metastases(GCTLm)is limited.Surgical resection is the optimal treatment in instances where there is a high chance of achieving complete resection[3].With regards to unresectable GCTLm there is a paucity of evidence to guide treatment strategy.

New smart home energy management systems based on inclining block-rate pricing scheme

There are wide applications of block-rate pricing schemes in many countries.However,there are no significant studies that apply this common tariff for smart home energy management systems.In this paper,a three-time-frame energy management scheme has been proposed for photovoltaic(PV)-powered grid-connected smart homes based on the well-known mixed-integer linear programming optimization technique.This paper provides three original and novel smart home energy management algorithms that depend on the most common residential tariff specifically in developing countries.Three different management concepts have been studied for a typical Egyptian house.The concepts of shifting load,vehicle-to-home and reducing air conditioning have been tested according to a commonly applied slab tariff.The proposed scheme considers the home battery extending lifetime constraints.It also preserves comfortable lifestyle limits for home users according to Arab housing climatic conditions and culture.moreover,the economic feasibility of integrated PV modules for the studied home has been verified according to the Egyptian tariff.The proposed energy management scheme of PV-powered home reduces the electrical power bill significantly in a wide range from 61%to only 19%of the default case bill according to the applied management technique.

Automatic Segmentation and Detection System for Varicocele Using Ultrasound Images

The enlarged veins in the pampiniform venous plexus,known as varicocele disease,are typically identified using ultrasound scans.Themedical diagnosis of varicocele is based on examinations made in three positions taken to the right and left testicles of the male patient.The proposed system is designed to determine whether a patient is affected.Varicocele is more frequent on the left side of the scrotum than on the right and physicians commonly depend on the supine position more than other positions.Therefore,the experimental results of this study focused on images taken in the supine position of the left testicles of patients.There are two possible vein structures in each image:a cross-section(circular)and a tube(non-circular)structure.This proposed system identifies dilated(varicocele)veins of these structures in ultrasound images in three stages:preprocessing,processing,and detection and measurement.These three stages are applied in three different color modes:Grayscale,Red-Green-Blue(RGB),and Hue,Saturation,and Value(HSV).In the preprocessing stage,the region of interest enclosing the pampiniform plexus area is extracted using a median filter and threshold segmentation.Then,the processing stage employs different filters to perform image denoising.Finally,edge detection is applied in multiple steps and the detected veins are measured to determine if dilated veins exist.Overall implementation results showed the proposed system is faster andmore effective than the previous work.

Residual Attention Deep SVDD for COVID-19 Diagnosis Using CT Scans

COVID-19 is the common name of the disease caused by the novel coronavirus(2019-nCoV)that appeared in Wuhan,China in 2019.Discovering the infected people is the most important factor in the fight against the disease.The gold-standard test to diagnose COVID-19 is polymerase chain reaction(PCR),but it takes 5–6 h and,in the early stages of infection,may produce false-negative results.Examining Computed Tomography(CT)images to diagnose patients infected with COVID-19 has become an urgent necessity.In this study,we propose a residual attention deep support vector data description SVDD(RADSVDD)approach to diagnose COVID-19.It is a novel approach combining residual attention with deep support vector data description(DSVDD)to classify the CT images.To the best of our knowledge,we are the first to combine residual attention with DSVDD in general,and specifically in the diagnosis of COVID-19.Combining attention with DSVDD naively may cause model collapse.Attention in the proposed RADSVDD guides the network during training and enables quick learning,residual connectivity prevents vanishing gradients.Our approach consists of three models,each model is devoted to recognizing one certain disease and classifying other diseases as anomalies.These models learn in an end-to-end fashion.The proposed approach attained high performance in classifying CT images into intact,COVID-19,and non-COVID-19 pneumonia.To evaluate the proposed approach,we created a dataset from published datasets and had it assessed by an experienced radiologist.The proposed approach achieved high performance,with the normal model attained sensitivity(0.96–0.98),specificity(0.97–0.99),F1-score(0.97–0.98),and area under the receiver operator curve(AUC)0.99;the COVID-19 model attained sensitivity(0.97–0.98),specificity(0.97–0.99),F1-score(0.97–0.99),and AUC 0.99;and the non-COVID pneumoniamodel attained sensitivity(0.97–1),specificity(0.98–0.99),F1-score(0.97–0.99),and AUC 0.99.
