Contribution of Bone Scintigraphy in the metastatic Extension Assessment of Prostate Cancer: A Study of 288 Cases in the Nuclear medicine Department of Idrissa Pouye General Hospital, Dakar

Introduction: Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed male malignancy and the fifth leading cause of cancer death in men worldwide. Since the advent of screening methods such as Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) assay, digital rectal examination (DRE) and prostate biopsy, its incidence has increased significantly. The aim of our study was to analyse aspects of bone scintigraphy (BS) as part of the metastatic extension assessment of prostate cancer in Senegal. Patients and methods: This was a retrospective descriptive and analytical study, running from January 1er 2022 to August 31 2023. Patients with histologically confirmed prostate cancer were included. Whole-body scans (WBS) were performed using a dual-head SPECT gamma camera (mediso Nucline Tm Spirit DH-V type), 3 hours after intravenous injection of 8 mBq/kg (555 to 740 mBq) of 99mTc-HmDP. Results: A total of 288 patients with a mean age of 68.37 ± 7.79 years were included. The median total PSA level was 97.6 ng/ml, with 144 patients having a level greater than or equal to 20 ng/ml. All patients had adenocarcinoma, and the Gleason score was available in 202 (70.13%) patients, 75.75% of whom had a score greater than or equal to 7. BS was contributory in 70.48% of cases, with 30.90% positive and 39.58% negative. The result was inconclusive in 85 patients (29.51%). The mean PSA for patients with a positive scan was 190.2 ng/ml and 40.6 ng/ml for those with a negative scan. multiple metastatic lesions predominated (87.35% of cases). metastatic lesions occurred preferentially in the axial skeleton, with a proportion of 68% versus 32% in the appendicular skeleton. Classification of bone metastases according to the SOLOWAY score revealed grade I (62.07%), grade II (35.63%) and grade IV (2.30%). Conclusion: In Senegal, prostate cancer is generally diagnosed in men of advanced age. The presence of bone metastases is frequent in its evolution, transforming a curable localized disease into a generalized disease with a compromised prognosis.

Introduction: Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women worldwide, accounting for an estimated 22% of all female cancers. It is the leading cause of cancer mortality in women, almost all of which is due to metastases, with 73% of metastases occurring in the bone. In oncology, metastable technetium 99-labelled methylene bisphosphonate bone scintigraphy (BS) remains the standard examination for detecting and assessing the extent of bone metastases. The aim of this study was to assess the role of BS in the evaluation and follow-up of breast cancer in Senegal. methodology: This was a retrospective study of breast cancer patients who underwent bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-HmDP in the nuclear medicine department of Idrissa Pouye General Hospital (IPGHO), from July 2009 to June 2022. Results: We enrolled 165 patients, mean age 46.79 years (27 - 87 years). BS was performed in 94.37% of cases for post-therapeutic monitoring and in 5.63% for pre-therapeutic assessment. Results were contributory in 131 patients (92.25%), of whom 72 cases (50.70%) were normal and 59 cases (41.55%) positive or presenting bone metastases;and non-contributory or doubtful in 11 cases (7.75%). Secondary bone locations were multiple in 57 cases (96.61%) and single or solitary in 2 cases (3.39%). The scintigraphic appearance of bone metastases was hyper-fixative in 58 cases (98.31%) and mixed in 1 case (1.69%). Bone lesions were quantified using the Soloway’s grading classification. Conclusion: BS with 99mTc-labelled bisphosphonates remains the examination of choice for skeletal exploration, in the detection and extension of bone metastases in breast cancer. Performance has been enhanced by the development of SPECT coupled with CT (SPECT-CT).

Cation exchange for mercury and cadmium of xanthated,sulfonated,activated and non-treated subbituminous coal,commercial activated carbon and commercial synthetic resin:effect of pre-oxidation on xanthation of subbituminous coal

A subbituminous coal was oxidized with air at 150℃on a fixed bed for 4 h and xanthated with carbondisulfide in a basic solution,at 30 or 5-10℃.This xanthated coal was evaluated for the removal of Hg^(2+)and Cd^(2+)from 7,000 mg/L aqueous solutions;metal concentrations were detemmined by atomic absorption spectrometry.The ionexchange of the xanthated coal was compared against those of the original subbituminous coal,a sulfonated subbituminouscoal,activated carbon,commercial activated carbon,and commercial synthetic resin.The commercial synthetic resinshowed the highest exchange capacity(concentration factor 98%)followed by the xanthated coal(concentration factor 96%).The retention of cadmium on the sulfonated subbituminous coal was lower(exchange capacity 0.56 meq/g)thanthat of xanthated coals(1.85±0.09 meq/g).Our xanthated coal showed a better Cd^(2+)removal(8l%o against 15%)than anon preoxidized 40-h-xanthated coal,which shows that oxidation of coal increased the amount of oxygenated groups whichenhanced xanthation.

A Dynamic management Scheme for Internet of Things(IoT)Environments:Simulation and Performance Evaluation

In recent years,the Internet of Things(IoT)technology has been considered one of the most attractive fields for researchers due to its aspirations and implications for society and life as a whole.The IoT environment contains vast numbers of devices,equipment,and heterogeneous users who generate massive amounts of data.Furthermore,things’entry into and exit fromIoT systems occur dynamically,changing the topology and content of IoT networks very quickly.Therefore,managing IoT environments is among the most pressing challenges.This paper proposes an adaptive and dynamic scheme for managing IoT environments is proposed.This management scheme depends on the use of previous management methodologies,considering two main factors.The first factor is network status,which is determined in real-time.The second factor is a management method’s suitability according to its desired administration.To test the proposed management scheme,a simulation environment is created using NS3.The metrics used to measure the management scheme performance are bandwidth consumption,energy consumption,packet loss,throughput,delay,usage rate of individualmanagement techniques,and transformation.The simulation results prove that the proposed management scheme outperformed the individual 6LowPANSNmP,CoAP,and LWm2m management schemes.

Hybrid Sensor Selection Technique for Lifetime Extension of Wireless Sensor Networks

Energy conservation is a crucial issue to extend the lifetime of wireless sensor networks(WSNs)where the battery capacity and energy sources are very restricted.Intelligent energy-saving techniques can help designers overcome this issue by reducing the number of selected sensors that report environmental measurements by eliminating all replicated and unrelated features.This paper suggests a Hybrid Sensor Selection(HSS)technique that combines filter-wrappermethod to acquire a rich-informational subset of sensors in a reasonable time.HSS aims to increase the lifetime of WSNs by using the optimal number of sensors.At the same time,HSS maintains the desired level of accuracy and manages sensor failures with the most suitable number of sensors without compromising the accuracy.The evaluation of the HSS technique has adopted four experiments by using four different datasets.These experiments show that HSS can extend the WSNs lifetime and increase the accuracy using a sufficient number of sensors without affecting theWSNfunctionality.Furthermore,to ensure HSS credibility and reliability,the proposed HSS technique has been compared to other corresponding methodologies and shows its superiority in energy conservation at premium accuracy measures.

Big Data Analytics Using Graph Signal Processing

The networks are fundamental to our modern world and they appear throughout science and society.Access to a massive amount of data presents a unique opportunity to the researcher’s community.As networks grow in size the complexity increases and our ability to analyze them using the current state of the art is at severe risk of failing to keep pace.Therefore,this paper initiates a discussion on graph signal processing for large-scale data analysis.We first provide a comprehensive overview of core ideas in Graph signal processing(GSP)and their connection to conventional digital signal processing(DSP).We then summarize recent developments in developing basic GSP tools,including methods for graph filtering or graph learning,graph signal,graph Fourier transform(GFT),spectrum,graph frequency,etc.Graph filtering is a basic task that allows for isolating the contribution of individual frequencies and therefore enables the removal of noise.We then consider a graph filter as a model that helps to extend the application of GSP methods to large datasets.To show the suitability and the effeteness,we first created a noisy graph signal and then applied it to the filter.After several rounds of simulation results.We see that the filtered signal appears to be smoother and is closer to the original noise-free distance-based signal.By using this example application,we thoroughly demonstrated that graph filtration is efficient for big data analytics.

Investigating the adaptability and implementation of computational design methods in concept design taking plasterboard opportunities for dimensional coordination and waste reduction as a case study

Construction material offcuts is a data problem that can largely be avoided by dimensional coordination during concept design.Besides the environmental benefits,early phase coordination is beneficial to the overall design process as it integrates information not typically considered until later in the design process.However,taking reality-changing actions is often challenged by uncertainty,time constraints,and lack of integration of available tools.Acknowledging the potential of computational design in enabling architects to manage design and coordination complexities and taking plasterboard opportunities for dimensional coordination,the paper presents a review and assessment of the existing methods to interrogate what,when,and how are these adaptable to the task.The study shows that mL-based methods outperform other methods and concludes that leveraging computational design powers to reduce offcuts is not a question of a tool,but one of a strategy.Eventually,the future steps to achieving such a strategy are discussed.

How to boost the effects of exercise to favor traumatic brain injury outcome

Physical rehabilitation is an effective therapy to normalize weaknesses encountered with neurological disorders such as traumatic brain injury(TBI).However,the efficacy of exercise is limited during the acute period of TBI because of metabolic dysfunction,and this may further compromise neuronal function.Here we discuss the possibility to normalize brain metabolism during the early post-injury convalescence period to support functional plasticity and prevent long-term functional deficits.Although BDNF possesses the unique ability to support molecular events involved with the transmission of information across nerve cells through activation of its TrkB receptor,the poor pharmacokinetic profile of BDNF has limited its therapeutic applicability.The flavonoid derivative,7,8-dihydroxyflavone(7,8-DHF),signals through the same TrkB receptors and results in the activation of BDNF signaling pathways.We discuss how the pharmacokinetic limitations of BDNF may be avoided by the use of 7,8-DHF,which makes it a promising pharmacological agent for supporting activity-based rehabilitation during the acute post-injury period after TBI.In turn,docosahexaenoic acid(C22:6n-3;DHA)is abundant in the phospholipid composition of plasma membranes in the brain and its action is important for brain development and plasticity.DHA is a major modulator of synaptic membrane fluidity and function,which is fundamental for supporting cell signaling and synaptic plasticity.Exercise influences DHA function by normalizing DHA content in the brain,such that the collaborative action of exercise and DHA can be instrumental to boost BDNF function with strong therapeutic potential for reducing the deleterious effects of TBI on synaptic plasticity and cognition.

The effect of rippling on the mechanical properties of graphene

Graphene is the stiffest material known so far but, due to its one-atom thickness, it is also very bendable.Consequently, free-standing graphene exhibit ripples that has major effects on its elastic properties. Here we will summarize three experiments where the influence of rippling is essential to address the results. Firstly, we observed that atomic vacancies lessen the negative thermal expansion coefficient(TEC) of free-standing graphene.We also observed an increase of the Young's modulus with global applied strain and with the introduction of small density defects that we attributed to the decrease of rippling. Here, we will focus on a surprising feature observed in the data: the experiments consistently indicate that only the rippling with wavelengths between 5 and 10 nm influences the mechanics of graphene. The rippling responsible of the negative TEC and anomalous elasticity is thought to be dynamic, i.e. flexural phonons. However, flexural phonons with these wavelengths should have minor effects on the mechanics of graphene, therefore other mechanisms must be considered to address our observations. We propose static ripples as one of the key elements to correctly understand the thermomechanics of graphene and suggest that rippling arises naturally due to a competition of symmetry breaking and anharmonic fluctuations.
