Changes in corneal biomechanics and intraocular pressure following Femto-LASIK using Goldman applanation tonometry and ocular response analyzer

AIm:To compare intraocular pressure(IOP)measurements before and after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK)with a femtosecond laser for flap creation using ocular response analyzer(ORA)and Goldmann applanation tonometry,and to identify factors that may influence the preoperative and postoperative ***:A prospective study conducted on myopic patients who underwent LASIK using a femtosecond laser for flap *** patients were evaluated preoperatively,6 wk and 3 mo postoperatively for manifest refraction(mR),keratometric(K)readings and central corneal thickness(CCT)using a scheimpflug-based *** resistance factor(CRF),corneal hysteresis(CH),Goldmann correlated IOP(IOPg)and corneal compensated IOP(IOPcc)were measured using ORA besides IOP assessment by Goldman applanation tonometry(GAT).RESULTS:There was a statistically significant decrease in measures of IOPg by 3.35±0.83 mm Hg,followed by GAT which decreased by 2.2±0.44 mm Hg,and the least affected by operation was IOPcc which decreased only by 0.87±0.1 mm Hg after 6 *** 3 mo follow up there was a statistically significant decrease in IOPcc which decreased only by 0.76±0.4 mm Hg,followed by IOP GAT by 1.6±0.5 mm Hg,and the most affected by operation was IOPg which decreased by 2.3±0.3 mm ***,there was a statistically significant decrease in CH and CRF after 6 wk and 3 *** 3 mo,the preoperative mR and preoperative GAT were prominent significant predictors of the postoperative GAT *** prediction equation was ***:IOP measurements and corneal biomechanical factors reduce significantly after LASIK with a femtosecond laser for flap *** IOPcc values are less influenced by changes in corneal properties than IOPg and GAT,indicating that IOPcc may provide the most reliable measurement of IOP after this procedure.

Objective:To investigate the effect of Cannabis sativa resin and/or tramadol,two commonly drugs of abuse on acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase activities as a possible cholinergic biomarkers of neurotoxicity induced by these ***:rats were treated with cannabis resin(5,10 or 20 mg/kg)(equivalent to the active constituent A'-tetrahydrocannabinol),tramadol(5,10 and 20 mg/kg) or tramadol(10 mg/kg)combined with cannabis resin(5,10 and 20 mg/kg) subcutaneously daily for 6 ***(AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase(BChE) activities were measured in brain and *** also measured the activity of paraoxonase-1(PONl) in serum of rats treated with these ***:(i) AChE activity in brain increased after 10-20 mg/kg cannabis resin(by 16.3%-36.5%).AChE activity in brain did not change after treatment with 5-20 mg/kg *** administration of both cannabis resin(5,10 or 20 mg/kg) and tramadol(10 mg/kg) resulted in decreased brain AChE activity by 14.1%,12.9%and 13.6%,respectively;(ii) BChE activity in serum was markedly and dose-dependenlly inhibited by cannabis resin(by 60.9%-76.9%).BChE activity also decreased by 17.6%-36.5%by 10-20mg/kg tramadol and by 57.2%-63.9%by the cannabis resin/tramadol combined treatment;(iii)Cannabis resin at dose of 20 mg/kg increased serum PONl activity by 25.7%.In contrast,tramadol given at 5,10 and 20 mg/kg resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in serum PON1 activity by 19%,36.7%,and 46.1%,***,treatment with cannabis resin plus tramadol resulted in 40.2%,35.8%,30.7%inhibition of PONl activity compared to the saline ***:these data suggest that cannabis resin exerts different effects on AChE and BChE activities which could contribute to the memory problems and the decline in cognitive function in chronic users.

Galactagogue effects of musa x paradisiaca flower extract on lactating rats

Objective:To investigate the potential of musa x paradisiaca(m.x paradisiaca)flower extracts in promoting milk production of lactating rats and its effects on growth of the suckling pups. methods:Galactagogue activity was evaluated in terms of quantity of milk produced from the rats treated with petroleum ether,ethanol or water extracts of the *** rats(n=5) of Spraque Dawley with six pups each were administered with the extracts in the amount of 500 mg/kg body weight,while the control rats were given an equivalent amount of distilled *** rats were daily administered via oral feeding starting from Day 5 until Day 14 and the performance of milk production was measured along the experimental period by weight-suckle-weight method. Results were statistically analyzed using SPSS by means of ANOVA at 0.05 and was expressed as their mean±standard *** rates of pups’ growth were measured as the weight gain along the experimental ***:The rats treated with aqueous extract produced higher milk than control and ethanol *** extract was identified to increase milk production by 25%,while petroleum ether extract by 18%.The mean of yields produced by the rats during suckling period for aqueous,petroleum ether,ethanol and control were 4.62±2.45,4.37±1.93,3.65±1.89 and 3.69±1.79,*** rates of pups for the rats treated with control,aqueous, ethanol extract and petroleum ether were(1.85±0.49),(1.78±0.56),(1.65±0.46)and(1.56±0.42) g/pup, ***:The present study reveals the potential of m.x paradisiaca flower to enhance milk production of nursing mothers which could be exploited for commercialization of the isolated extract.

In recent years,the number of Gun-related incidents has crossed over 250,000 per year and over 85%of the existing 1 billion firearms are in civilian hands,manual monitoring has not proven effective in detecting *** is why an automated weapon detection system is *** automated convolutional neural networks(CNN)weapon detection systems have been proposed in the past to generate good ***,These techniques have high computation overhead and are slow to provide real-time detection which is essential for the weapon detection *** models have a high rate of false negatives because they often fail to detect the guns due to the low quality and visibility issues of surveillance *** research work aims to minimize the rate of false negatives and false positives in weapon detection while keeping the speed of detection as a key *** proposed framework is based on You Only Look Once(YOLO)and Area of Interest(AOI).Initially,themodels take pre-processed frames where the background is removed by the use of the Gaussian blur *** proposed architecture will be assessed through various performance parameters such as False Negative,False Positive,precision,recall rate,and F1 *** results of this research work make it clear that due to YOLO-v5s high recall rate and speed of detection are *** reached 0.010 s per frame compared to the 0.17 s of the Faster *** is promising to be used in the field of security and weapon detection.

The presence of high indoor radon concentrations,Cx,is a major concern of the public *** of indoor radon in South Lebanon have been achieved using CR-39 *** ranged between 30 and 122 Bq m-3 in one of the major towns in the area and are compared with measured atmospheric air *** seasonal variation of Cxindoors has been observed,although 90%of the obtained indoor Cxmeasurements are below 100 Bq *** homes produced Cxreadings above the permissible *** showed that the ventilation effect played a major factor in reducing radon concentration levels *** assessment has been *** effective doses of radon varied from 1.01±0.10 to 8.65±0.50 m Sv a-1 in six homes in one of the four cases *** dosage values are above the permitted limit of 2.5 m Sv *** types of granite contained in the studied homes were identified and their contributions to radon levels indoors were calculated.

Prognostic value of baseline FDG uptake on PET-CT in esophageal carcinoma

AIm: To evaluate the influence of baseline maximum standardized uptake value(SUVmax) on survival in a cohort of patients, undergoing positron emission tomography-computed tomography(PET-CT) scan for esophageal carcinoma. mETHODS: The pre-treatment SUVmax numeric reading was determined in patients with confirmed esophageal or junctional cancer having PET-CT scan during the time period 1st January 2007 until 31 st July 2012. A minimum follow up of 12 mo was required. Patients were subdivided into quartiles according to SUVmax value and the influence of SUVmax on survival was assessed using univariate and multivariate analysis. The following pre-treatment factors were investigated: patient characteristics, tumor characteristics and planned treatment. RESULTS: The study population was 271 patients(191male) with esophageal or junctional carcinoma. The median age was 65 years(range 40-85) and histologic subtype was adenocarcinoma in 197 patients and squamous carcinoma in 74 patients. The treatment intent was radical in 182 and palliative in 89 patients. SUVmax was linked to histologic subtype(P = 0.008), tumor site(P = 0.01) and Union for International Cancer Control(UICC) stage(P max(P = 0.001), T-stage(P multivariate analysis, only T-stage and UICC stage remained significant. CONCLUSION: Pretreatment SUVmax was not a useful marker in isolation for determining prognosis of patients with esophageal carcinoma.

Cover crops have long been proposed as an alternative soil management for minimizing erosion rates in olive stands while providing additional ecosystem ***,the trade-off between these benefits and the competition for water with the trees makes the definition of optimal management practices a challenging task in semiarid *** work presents an improved version of OliveCan,a process-based simulation model of olive orchards that now can simulate the main impacts of cover crops on the water and carbon balances of olive *** simple in its formulation,the new model components were developed to deal with different cover crop management *** are presented for simulation runs of a traditional olive orchard in the conditions of southern Spain,evaluating the effects of different widths for the strip occupied by the cover crop(Fcc)and two contrasting mowing *** revealed that high Fccresulted in lower olive yields,but only when mowing was applied at the end of *** this regard,late mowing and high Fccwas associated with lower soil water content from spring to summer,coinciding with olive flowering and the earlier stages of fruit *** also negatively correlated with surface runoff irrespective of the mowing *** the other hand,net ecosystem productivity(NEP)was substantially affected by both Fccand mowing *** simulations under future climate scenarios comparing the same management alternatives are also presented,showing substantial yield reductions by the end of the century and minor or negligible changes in NEP and seasonal runoff.

Impacts of climate change on water quantity, water salinity, food security, and socioeconomy in Egypt

The Case Against Delusional Parasitosis

The body of knowledge on delusional parasitosis incriminates ＂delusional patients＂ as having imaginary external and/or internal symptoms that feel like parasite movements, dismisses them as psychiatric cases, and confuses cause with effect. The author is critical of these arguments and believes that the symptoms of crawling and pin-pricking are genuine; just misinterpreted as parasite movements. Based on the author＇s research on over 1000 ＂delusional＂ patients since 1996 at the Parasitology Center, Inc. （PCI）, the author has established that the symptoms of crawling and pin-pricking are caused by toxicity from exposure to incompatible dental materials, implants, environmental toxins among others that alter the propagation of normal nerve impulses. The author has also observed that external parasites/organisms including springtails （Collembola）, other arthropods, bacteria, and fungi represent only opportunistic infections of skin sites compromised by the toxicity disorder involving the elimination of toxins through the skin. The author has described a new pathological disorder, Neuro-cutaneous Syndrome （NCS） primarily associated with dental toxicity to which ＂delusional parasitosis＂ and morgellons disease cases could be assigned. The author has developed a protocol for the resolution of the symptoms of NCS cases. When followed to the letter, all symptoms of NCS, conventionally called delusional parasitosis, are invariably and irreversibly resolved; each individual＇s unique circumstances taken into account. The author is also presenting a detailed case history of an NCS patient that has recovered from her experiential personal perspective.

Tissue engineering response may be tailored via controlled,sustained release of active agents from protein-loaded degradable microparticles incorporated directly within three-dimensional(3D)ice-templated collagen ***,the effects of covalent crosslinking during scaffold preparation on the availability and release of protein from the incorporated microparticles have not been ***,we load 3D ice-templated collagen scaffolds with controlled additions of poly-(DL-lactide-co-glycolide)*** probe the effects of subsequent N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N0-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride crosslinking on protein release,using microparticles with different internal protein *** isothiocyanate labelled bovine serum albumin is used as a model protein *** scaffolds display a homogeneous microparticle distribution,and a reduction in pore size and percolation diameter with increased microparticle addition,although these values did not fall below those reported as necessary for cell *** protein distribution within the microparticles,near the surface or more deeply located within the microparticles,was important in determining the release profile and effect of crosslinking,as the surface was affected by the carbodiimide crosslinking reaction applied to the *** of microparticles with a high proportion of protein at the surface caused both a reduction and delay in protein *** located within the bulk of the microparticles,was protected from the crosslinking reaction and no delay in the overall release profile was seen.
