Adsorptive removal of iron and manganese ions from aqueous solutions with microporous chitosan/polyethylene glycol blend membrane

Microporous chitosan （CS） membranes were directly prepared by extraction of poly（ethylene glycol）（PeG） from CS/PeG blend membrane and were examined for iron and manganese ions removal from aqueous solutions. The different variables affecting the adsorption capacity of the membranes such as contact time, pH of the sorption medium, and initial metal ion concentration in the feed solution were investigated on a batch adsorption basis. The affinity of CS/PeG blend membrane to adsorb Fe（II） ions is higher than that of Mn（II） ions, with adsorption equilibrium achieved after 60 min for Fe（II） and Mn（II） ions. By increasing CS]PeG ratio in the blend membrane the adsorption capacity of metal ions increased. Among all parameters, pH has the most significant effect on the adsorption capacity, particularly in the range of 2.9-5.9. The increase in CS/PeG ratio was found to enhance the adsorption capacity of the membranes. The effects of initial concentration of metal ions on the extent of metal ions removal were investigated in detail. The experimental data were better fitted to Freundlich equation than Langmuir. In addition, it was found that the iron and manganese ions adsorbed on the membranes can be effectively desorbed in 0.1 mol/L HCl solution （up to 98% desorption efficiency） and the blend membranes can be reused almost without loss of the adsorption capacity for iron and manganese ions.

Gastric acid inhibitory and gastric protective effects of cannabis and cannabinoids

Cannabis sativa has long been known for its psychotropic effect. Only recently with the discovery of the cannabinoid receptors, their endogenous legends and the enzymes responsible for their synthesis and degradation, the role of this ‘endocannabinoid system’ in different pathophysiologic processes is beginning to be delineated. There is evidence that CB1 receptor stimulation with synthetic cannabinoids or Cannabis sativa extracts rich in ?9-tetrahydrocannabinol inhibit gastric acid secretion in humans and in experimental animals. This is specially seen when gastric acid secretion is stimulated by pentagastrin, carbachol or 2 deoxy-D-glucose. Cannabis and/or cannabinoids protect the gastric mucosa against noxious challenge with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ethanol as well as against stress induced mucosal damage. Cannabis/cannabinoids might protect the gastric mucosa by virtue of its antisecretory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and vasodilator properties.

GReeN SYNTHeSIS OF ANTIBACTeRIAL CHITOSAN FILMS LOADeD WITH SILVeR NANOPARTICLeS

An eco-friendly chemical reduction method was successfully used for the preparation of chitosan （CTS） composite films loaded with silver nanoparticles （AgNPs） by self assembly method using poly（ethylene glycol） as both reducing and stabilizing agent. UV-Vis spectra of the prepared chitosan loaded silver nanoparticles （CTSLAg） films reveal that full reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles takes place at 90 ℃. The effect of reaction conditions on the silver nanoparticles formation was investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The morphology of the films was tested by scanning electron microscopy （SeM）. The DSC curves showed that the CTSLAg film had a favorable compatibility and heat stability. AgNPs were confirmed by XRD and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The TeM findings revealed that the silver nanoparticles synthesized were spherical in shape with uniform dispersal, and by increasing CTS：PeG ratio larger silver nanoparticles could be obtained. The results of antibacterial study reveal that the prepared nanoeomposite films exhibited potential inhibition.

Preventive effects of cannabis on neurotoxic and hepatotoxic activities of malathion in rat

Objective: To investigate the effect of Cannabis sativa extract on the development of neuroand hepato-toxicity caused by malathion injection in rats. Methods: The extract of Cannabis sativa was obtained from the plant resin by chloroform treatment. Δ~9-Tetrahydrocannabinol content of the extract(20%) was quantified using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The doses of cannabis extract were expressed as Δ~9-tetrahydrocannabinol content of 10 or 20 mg/kg. Malathion(150 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered followed after 30 min by the cannabis extract(10 or 20 mg/kg, subcutaneously). Rats were euthanized 4 h later. Malondialdehyde(MDA), reduced glutathione(GSH), nitric oxide and paraoxonase-1(PON-1) activity were determined in brain and liver. Brain 5-lipoxygenase and butyrylcholinesterase(BChe) activity were measured as well. Histopathological examination of brain and liver tissue was also performed. Results: Compared to controls, malathion resulted in increased oxidative stress in brain and liver. MDA and nitric oxide concentrations were significantly increased(Pecreased with respect to control levels(Ped PON-1 and BChe activities but had no effect on brain 5-lipoxygenase. Brain MDA concentrations were not altered by cannabis treatment. Cannabis at 20 mg/kg, however, caused significant increase in nitric oxide and restored the GSH and PON-1 activity. Brain BChe activity significantly decreased by 26.1%(Per treatment with 10 mg/kg cannabis. Cannabis showed no effect on brain 5-lipoxygenase. On the other hand, rats treated with cannabis exhibited significantly higher levels of liver MDA, nitric oxide and PON-1 activity compared with the malathion control group. Rats treated with only malathion exhibited spongiform changes, neuronal damage in the cerebral cortex and degeneration of some Purkinje cells in the cerebellum. Neuroprotection by misoprostol against rotenone-induced neurotoxicity in rat brain

Objective: To investigate the effect of the prostaglandin e1 analogue misoprostol on oxidative stress and neurodegeration caused by subcutaneous rotenone administration in rats. Methods:Rotenone was administered in a dose of 1.5 mg/kg every other day for 2 weeks. Starting from the 1 st day of rotenone injection, rats were subcutaneously treated with misoprostol at doses of10, 100 or 1 000 μg/kg. Rats were evaluated for brain lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde:MDA), reduced glutathione(GSH), nitric oxide(NO) levels, and paraoxonase-1(PON-1) *** concentrations of the anti-apoptotic protein B cell/lymphoma-2(Bcl-2) were determined in the striatum. Histopathologic examination and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) in the cerebral cortex and striatum were also performed. Results: Compared with the vehicle-treated group, rotenone caused a significant increase in brain lipid proxidation(MDA)by 61%(Ped by an increase in NO by 73.1%(Pecrease in GSH concentration by 29.4%(Pecreased by63.0%(Pecreased by 27.9%(Pespect to the corresponding control value. Brain sections from rotenone treated rats showed extensive dark pyknotic and apoptotic nuclei in neurons, shrunken cytoplasm and perineuronal *** also caused pronounced expression of iNOS in the cerebral cortex and *** with misoprostol at doses of 100 and 1 000 μg/kg resulted in decreased brain MDA(by 16.5%-23.0%)(Pevels(by 37.1%-40.7%)(Peased GSH concentrations(by 18.8%-30.1%)(Peased by80.0%-114.8%(Pespectively. Objective:To investigate the effect of Cannabis sativa resin and/or tramadol,two commonly drugs of abuse on acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase activities as a possible cholinergic biomarkers of neurotoxicity induced by these ***:rats were treated with cannabis resin(5,10 or 20 mg/kg)(equivalent to the active constituent A'-tetrahydrocannabinol),tramadol(5,10 and 20 mg/kg) or tramadol(10 mg/kg)combined with cannabis resin(5,10 and 20 mg/kg) subcutaneously daily for 6 ***(AChe) and butyrylcholinesterase(BChe) activities were measured in brain and *** also measured the activity of paraoxonase-1(PONl) in serum of rats treated with these ***:(i) AChe activity in brain increased after 10-20 mg/kg cannabis resin(by 16.3%-36.5%).AChe activity in brain did not change after treatment with 5-20 mg/kg *** administration of both cannabis resin(5,10 or 20 mg/kg) and tramadol(10 mg/kg) resulted in decreased brain AChe activity by 14.1%,12.9%and 13.6%,respectively;(ii) BChe activity in serum was markedly and dose-dependenlly inhibited by cannabis resin(by 60.9%-76.9%).BChe activity also decreased by 17.6%-36.5%by 10-20mg/kg tramadol and by 57.2%-63.9%by the cannabis resin/tramadol combined treatment;(iii)Cannabis resin at dose of 20 mg/kg increased serum PONl activity by 25.7%.In contrast,tramadol given at 5,10 and 20 mg/kg resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in serum PON1 activity by 19%,36.7%,and 46.1%,***,treatment with cannabis resin plus tramadol resulted in 40.2%,35.8%,30.7%inhibition of PONl activity compared to the saline ***:these data suggest that cannabis resin exerts different effects on AChe and BChe activities which could contribute to the memory problems and the decline in cognitive function in chronic users.

Quasi-Periodic Structures Based on Symmetrical Lucas Function of (2+1)-Dimensional Modified Dispersive Water-Wave System

By introducing the Lucas-Riccati method and a linear variable separation method, new variable separation solutions with arbitrary functions are derived for a （2＋1）-dimensional modified dispersive water-wave system. The main idea of this method is to express the solutions of this system as polynomials in the solution of the Riecati equation that the symmetrical Lucas functions satisfy. From the variable separation sohition and by selecting appropriate functions, some novel Jacobian elliptic wave structure with variable modulus and their interactions with dromions and peakons are investigated.

evaluation of the 8th AJCC staging system for pathologically versus clinically staged pancreatic adenocarcinoma: A time to revisit a dogma?

Background: The 8 th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer(AJCC) staging system for pancreatic exocrine adenocarcinoma has been released. The current study seeks to assess the 7 th and 8 th editions among patients registered within the surveillance, epidemiology and end results(SeeR) ***: SeeR database(2010–2013) has been accessed through SeeR*Stat program and AJCC 8 th edition stages were reconstructed utilizing the collaborative stage descriptions. Kaplan–Meier analysis of overall survival and pancreatic cancer-specific survival analyses(according to both 7 th and 8 th editions and according to whether pathological or clinical staging were conducted) has been performed. Multivariate analysis of factors affecting pancreatic cancer-specific survival was also conducted through a Cox proportional hazard ***: A total of 18 948 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma were identified in the period from 2010–2013. Pancreatic cancer-specific survival among pathologically staged patients and according to the 8 th edition showed significant differences for all pair wise comparisons among different stages(P except for the comparison between stage IA and stage IB(P = 0.307) and the comparison between stage IB and stage IIA(P = 0.116). Moreover, P value for stage IA vs IIA was 0.014; while pancreatic cancer-specific survival according to the 7 th edition among pathologically staged patients showed significant differences for all pair wise comparisons among different stages(P except for the comparison between IA and IB(P = 0.072), the comparison between stage IIA and stage IIB(P = 0.065), the comparison between stage IIA and stage Ⅲ(P = 0.059) and the comparison between IIB and Ⅲ(P = 0.595).Among clinically staged patients(i.e. those who did not undergo initial radical surgery), the prognostic performance of both 7 th and 8 th stages for both overall survival and pancreatic cancer-specific survival was ***: Th
