The effect of addition of Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr chlorides as admixtures on the hydration reaction of the system 3CaO·Al2O3-gypsum with molar ratio 1：3 was studied. Different ratios of each salt were used, namely 0.5%, 2% and 4% by weight of the solid mixture. Hydration reaction was carried out at 35℃ for various time intervals from 0.5 h to up to 7 d. Hydration rate of the system 3CaO·Al2O3-CaSO4·2H2O in absence and presence of different salts was studied via the determination of the combined water contents. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the ettringite was the only hydration product formed in the different mixes. The hydration products were investigated by scanning electron microscopy （SeM） and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results indicated that the rate of formation of ettringite and its microstructure depend on the admixture and its dosage.

Background: Grit is used by birds mainly for grinding hard food items but can also serve a nutritional role as a source of minerals. Ingestion of grit by birds has been documented primarily in species that feed on seeds and *** feeding mainly on nectar and small arthropods, hummingbirds also ingest grit, but why they do so is unclear. We quantified the number of grit particles in the stomachs of six species of hummingbirds during an annual cycle in a seasonal ecosystem of West ***: We compared the number of grit particles in the stomachs of different hummingbird species(Mexican Violetear Colibri thalassinus, Amethyst-throated Mountaingem Lampornis amethystinus, White-eared Hummingbird Basilinna leucotis, Rivoli's Hummingbird eugenes fulgens, Broad-tailed Hummingbird Selasphorus platycercus, and Rufous Hummingbird S. rufus), and between sex and age categories during the different seasons of a year. To deter-mine if grit was used to grind ingested arthropods, we examined the relationships between the number of grit parti-cles, the biomass of arthropods ingested, and their chitin ***: Although species did not differ in the number of grit particles in their stomachs, we found that grit was mostly ingested by female individuals, with only one male of one species(Mexican Violetear) presenting grit in its stomach. We also found that female hummingbirds had grit in their stomachs during the rainy and the cold-dry season(June-February) but not during the warm-dry season(March-May). Our analyses revealed no relationship between the number of grit particles and the amount of ingested arthropods and arthropod chitin content. evaluation of the 8th AJCC staging system for pathologically versus clinically staged pancreatic adenocarcinoma: A time to revisit a dogma?

Background: The 8 th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer(AJCC) staging system for pancreatic exocrine adenocarcinoma has been released. The current study seeks to assess the 7 th and 8 th editions among patients registered within the surveillance, epidemiology and end results(SeeR) ***: SeeR database(2010–2013) has been accessed through SeeR*Stat program and AJCC 8 th edition stages were reconstructed utilizing the collaborative stage descriptions. Kaplan–Meier analysis of overall survival and pancreatic cancer-specific survival analyses(according to both 7 th and 8 th editions and according to whether pathological or clinical staging were conducted) has been performed. Multivariate analysis of factors affecting pancreatic cancer-specific survival was also conducted through a Cox proportional hazard ***: A total of 18 948 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma were identified in the period from 2010–2013. Pancreatic cancer-specific survival among pathologically staged patients and according to the 8 th edition showed significant differences for all pair wise comparisons among different stages(P except for the comparison between stage IA and stage IB(P = 0.307) and the comparison between stage IB and stage IIA(P = 0.116). Moreover, P value for stage IA vs IIA was 0.014; while pancreatic cancer-specific survival according to the 7 th edition among pathologically staged patients showed significant differences for all pair wise comparisons among different stages(P except for the comparison between IA and IB(P = 0.072), the comparison between stage IIA and stage IIB(P = 0.065), the comparison between stage IIA and stage Ⅲ(P = 0.059) and the comparison between IIB and Ⅲ(P = 0.595).Among clinically staged patients(i.e. those who did not undergo initial radical surgery), the prognostic performance of both 7 th and 8 th stages for both overall survival and pancreatic cancer-specific survival was ***: Th

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells ameliorate sodium nitrite-induced hypoxic brain injury in a rat model

Sodium nitrite（Na NO2） is an inorganic salt used broadly in chemical industry. Na NO2 is highly reactive with hemoglobin causing hypoxia. Mesenchymal stem cells（MSCs） are capable of differentiating into a variety of tissue specific cells and MSC therapy is a potential method for improving brain functions. This work aims to investigate the possible therapeutic role of bone marrow-derived MSCs against Na NO2 induced hypoxic brain injury. Rats were divided into control group（treated for 3 or 6 weeks）, hypoxic（HP） group（subcutaneous injection of 35 mg/kg Na NO2 for 3 weeks to induce hypoxic brain injury）, HP recovery groups N-2 w R and N-3 w R（treated with the same dose of Na NO2 for 2 and 3 weeks respectively, followed by 4-week or 3-week self-recovery respectively）, and MSCs treated groups N-2 w SC and N-3 w SC（treated with the same dose of Na NO2 for 2 and 3 weeks respectively, followed by one injection of 2 × 106 MSCs via the tail vein in combination with 4 week self-recovery or intravenous injection of Na NO2 for 1 week in combination with 3 week self-recovery）. The levels of neurotransmitters（norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin）, energy substances（adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate, adenosine triphosphate）, and oxidative stress markers（malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, glutathione reduced form, and oxidized glutathione） in the frontal cortex and midbrain were measured using high performance liquid chromatography. At the same time, hematoxylin-eosin staining was performed to observe the pathological change of the injured brain tissue. Compared with HP group, pathological change of brain tissue was milder, the levels of malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, oxidized glutathione, 8-hydroxy-2′-deoxyguanosine, norepinephrine, serotonin, glutathione reduced form, and adenosine triphosphate in the frontal cortex and midbrain were significantly decreased, and glutathione reduced form/oxidized glutathione and adenosine monophosphate/adenosine

GReeN SYNTHeSIS OF ANTIBACTeRIAL CHITOSAN FILMS LOADeD WITH SILVeR NANOPARTICLeS

An eco-friendly chemical reduction method was successfully used for the preparation of chitosan （CTS） composite films loaded with silver nanoparticles （AgNPs） by self assembly method using poly（ethylene glycol） as both reducing and stabilizing agent. UV-Vis spectra of the prepared chitosan loaded silver nanoparticles （CTSLAg） films reveal that full reduction of silver ions to silver nanoparticles takes place at 90 ℃. The effect of reaction conditions on the silver nanoparticles formation was investigated using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The morphology of the films was tested by scanning electron microscopy （SeM）. The DSC curves showed that the CTSLAg film had a favorable compatibility and heat stability. AgNPs were confirmed by XRD and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The TeM findings revealed that the silver nanoparticles synthesized were spherical in shape with uniform dispersal, and by increasing CTS：PeG ratio larger silver nanoparticles could be obtained. The results of antibacterial study reveal that the prepared nanoeomposite films exhibited potential inhibition.

Adsorptive removal of iron and manganese ions from aqueous solutions with microporous chitosan/polyethylene glycol blend membrane

Microporous chitosan （CS） membranes were directly prepared by extraction of poly（ethylene glycol）（PeG） from CS/PeG blend membrane and were examined for iron and manganese ions removal from aqueous solutions. The different variables affecting the adsorption capacity of the membranes such as contact time, pH of the sorption medium, and initial metal ion concentration in the feed solution were investigated on a batch adsorption basis. The affinity of CS/PeG blend membrane to adsorb Fe（II） ions is higher than that of Mn（II） ions, with adsorption equilibrium achieved after 60 min for Fe（II） and Mn（II） ions. By increasing CS]PeG ratio in the blend membrane the adsorption capacity of metal ions increased. Among all parameters, pH has the most significant effect on the adsorption capacity, particularly in the range of 2.9-5.9. The increase in CS/PeG ratio was found to enhance the adsorption capacity of the membranes. The effects of initial concentration of metal ions on the extent of metal ions removal were investigated in detail. The experimental data were better fitted to Freundlich equation than Langmuir. In addition, it was found that the iron and manganese ions adsorbed on the membranes can be effectively desorbed in 0.1 mol/L HCl solution （up to 98% desorption efficiency） and the blend membranes can be reused almost without loss of the adsorption capacity for iron and manganese ions.

In this review, we examine the evolution and application of various diagnostic modalities for varicoceles starting with venography, scintigraphy, and thermography and their role in the evaluation of a varicocele patient. Some of these methods have been supplanted by less invasive and more easily performed diagnostic modalities, especially ultrasound and Doppler examination of the scrotum. Advances in ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging hold the potential to expand the role of imaging beyond that of visual confirmation and characterization of varicoceles. The ability to identify the early indicators of testicular dysfunction based on imaging findings may have implications for the management of varicoceles in the future.

The study of optimization methods for reliability–redundancy allocation problems is a constantly changing *** algorithms are continually being designed on the basis of observations of nature,wildlife,and *** this paper,we review eight major evolutionary algorithms that emulate the behavior of civilization,ants,bees,fishes,and birds(i.e.,genetic algorithms,bee colony optimization,simulated annealing,particle swarm optimization,biogeography-based optimization,artificial immune system optimization,cuckoo algorithm and imperialist competitive algorithm).We evaluate the mathematical formulations and pseudo-codes of each algorithm and discuss how these apply to reliability–redundancy allocation *** from a literature survey show the best results found for series,series–parallel,bridge,and applied case problems(e.g.,overspeeding gas turbine benchmark).Review of literature from recent years indicates an extensive improvement in the algorithm reliability ***,this improvement has been difficult to achieve for high-reliability *** and future challenges in reliability–redundancy allocation problems optimization are also discussed in this paper.

Changes in corneal biomechanics and intraocular pressure following Femto-LASIK using Goldman applanation tonometry and ocular response analyzer

AIM:To compare intraocular pressure(IOP)measurements before and after laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK)with a femtosecond laser for flap creation using ocular response analyzer(ORA)and Goldmann applanation tonometry,and to identify factors that may influence the preoperative and postoperative ***:A prospective study conducted on myopic patients who underwent LASIK using a femtosecond laser for flap *** patients were evaluated preoperatively,6 wk and 3 mo postoperatively for manifest refraction(MR),keratometric(K)readings and central corneal thickness(CCT)using a scheimpflug-based *** resistance factor(CRF),corneal hysteresis(CH),Goldmann correlated IOP(IOPg)and corneal compensated IOP(IOPcc)were measured using ORA besides IOP assessment by Goldman applanation tonometry(GAT).ReSULTS:There was a statistically significant decrease in measures of IOPg by 3.35±0.83 mm Hg,followed by GAT which decreased by 2.2±0.44 mm Hg,and the least affected by operation was IOPcc which decreased only by 0.87±0.1 mm Hg after 6 *** 3 mo follow up there was a statistically significant decrease in IOPcc which decreased only by 0.76±0.4 mm Hg,followed by IOP GAT by 1.6±0.5 mm Hg,and the most affected by operation was IOPg which decreased by 2.3±0.3 mm ***,there was a statistically significant decrease in CH and CRF after 6 wk and 3 *** 3 mo,the preoperative MR and preoperative GAT were prominent significant predictors of the postoperative GAT *** prediction equation was ***:IOP measurements and corneal biomechanical factors reduce significantly after LASIK with a femtosecond laser for flap *** IOPcc values are less influenced by changes in corneal properties than IOPg and GAT,indicating that IOPcc may provide the most reliable measurement of IOP after this procedure.
