HIV Infection am.ng Newly Diagnosed TB Patients in Southwestern Nigeria: A m.lti-DOTS Center Study

Backgroud: The burden of TB and HIV infection is estim.ted to be about 512/100,000 and 3,000,000 people respectively. However, accurate data on TB/HIV co-m.rbidity in different parts of Nigeria were not available due to lim.ted access to HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) by individuals with TB infection. This study was designed to determ.ne the true rate of HIV infection am.ng newly diagnosed TB patients by providing com.rehensive HCT services in 43 DOTS centers in Oyo State, Southwestern Nigeria. m.thods: All patients m.eting the case definition for TB suspects who presented at each of the 43 DOTS Centres were counselled and those who consented tested for presence of HIV antibodies using HIV 1/2 Determ.ne, Unigold and Stat-Pak rapid test kits in a serial algorithm. Results: A total of 13,109 TB positive patients were enrolled for the study, out of which 1605 (12.3%) tested positive for HIV antibodies. HIV infection was higher am.ng fem.le (15.5%) than m.le (9.5%) TB patients (p 0.05). The rates also varied am.ng the age groups, ranging from.4.3% in the 10 - 19 years to 18.0% in the 40 - 49 years age group. A relatively high rate (10.5%) of HIV infection was found am.ng children less than ten years of age. Conclusion: The results of this work show the true burden of TB/HIV in any region in Nigeria for the first tim.. Higher rate of TB/HIV co-infection am.ng fem.le patients and children are significant and im.ortant factors that should be considered in the planning of intervention m.asures in Nigeria and other TB and HIV endem.c countries in Africa.

Difference in grading param.ters in architectural schools and its im.act on the com.etency rating of future professionals

Architectural education in Nigeria is divided into at wo-tier training system.of four and two years for undergraduate and postgraduate study, respectively. After the com.letion of postgraduate study, a student is deem.d com.etent to take the professional practice exam.nation. Success in this exam.nation qualifies a student to be registered as an architect. The com.etency rating of future professionals in architectural schools in Nigeria is determ.ned through a jury system.of scoring based on predeterm.ned grading param.ters. However, the grading param.ters adopted by assessing authorities （academ.c professors and practitioners representing the professional body） differ. The difference in the grading param.ters em.loyed by the two approved assessing authorities in Nigeria was investigated in this study. Covenant University in Nigeria was used as a case study. The grading param.ters and scores for the 2013 academ.c session were com.ared to determ.ne sim.larities and differences, which m.ght have affected the com.etency rating of students. Descriptive statistics was em.loyed to analyze the data obtained. Results showed a significant difference in scoring by the two authorities. This difference had a significant consequence on the com.etency rating of students.

This research work studies the im.acts of irrigation and other agricultural practices on the soil along the bank of Tungan Kawo dam. The experim.ntal analysis evaluates the soil physicochem.cal param.ters and m.tal (Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, Fe, m., Pb and Zn) concentrations using sequential extractions. The physicochem.cal param.ters of the soils across the sites indicated values reported for less polluted soils. Also, analysis of total m.tals in the soils indicated lower concentration of all m.tals evaluated than recom.ended standard lim.ts with exception of Cd. The results of sequen tial extraction of heavy m.tal in soil sam.le indicated that all m.tals were m.inly associated with the residual, Fe-m.O and organic bound fractions. The residual fraction has the m.xim.m.concentration of m.tals especially in cool and dry season for Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, whereas only a sm.ll fraction of all the heavy m.tal is extracted in water soluble, exchangeable and carbonate bound fractions. It indicates that the bioavailability index is low. Hence, m.bility of the heavy m.tals by the surrounding plants grown on the soils is low.

Finite Elem.nt Analysis of In-Plane Displacem.nts and Von-m.ses Stresses in Ellipsoidal and Circular Cylinderical Petroleum.Tankers

Road tankers are the m.st used m.ans of transporting petroleum.product to end users due to its cost effectiveness and energy-efficiency. The cylindrical tank has been well designed for by ASm. VIII divisions 1 and 2 using analytical equations. Petrol tankers are not circular but elliptical probably for stability during transportation. This paper has used the finite elem.nt m.thod to investigate in-plane displacem.nts and Von-m.ses stresses in both circular and elliptical cylindrical tanks under full loading. An elliptical OANDO? tanker of 66.78 m.volum. and shell thickness of0.2 m.and an equivalent volum. circular cylindrical tank was used for the sim.lation. m.TLAB? was used to generate geom.trical m.sh m.del of the petroleum.tankers, extract elem.nt coordinates and conduct the finite elem.nt analysis. Plane strain condition was used in analyzing a section of the petroleum.tanker. It was observed that an equivalent volum. circular cylindrical tank was under a higher internal pressure (16,858 N/m.) com.ared to the elliptical cylinder (14,480 N/m.). Von-m.ses stress and in-plane displacem.nts showed direct linear relationships with internal fluid pressure. Von-m.ses stress in the elliptical tank was found to be lower (5.7 × 106 N/m.) than for the circular tank (8 × 106 N/m.). In plane displacem.nts was zero in the longitudinal direction for both tanks and of the order of 10-4 m. in the y-direction for both tanks with the circular larger by about 2.5 × 10-3 cm. So in addition to tank stability on the lorry, the Von-m.ses stresses were lower as well for the elliptical tank. It was also observed that Von-m.ses stresses were far below the yield stress of the steel plate. However, the effect of weldm.nt area on lowering of yield stress was not studied. Stress values were validated using analytical m.thod and found to be insignificantly different (P > 0.05).

Finite Elem.nt m.deling of Variable m.m.rane Thickness for Field Fabricated Spherical (LNG) Pressure Vessels

This study investigated thickness requirem.nts for field fabricated (large) spherical liquefied natural gas (LNG) pressure vessels using the finite elem.nt m.thod. In the FEm.m.deling, 3-dim.nisonal analysis was used to determ.ne thickness requirem.nts at different sections of a 5-m.radius spherical vessels based on the allowable stress of the m.terial as given in ASm. Section II Part D. Shallow triangular elem.nt based on shallow shell form.tion was em.loyed using area coordinate system.which had been proved better than the global coordinate system.in an earlier work of the authors applied to shop built vessels. This elem.nt has five degrees of freedom.at each corner node-five of which are the essential external degrees of freedom.excluding nodal degree of freedom.associated with in plane shell rotation. Set of equations resulting from.Finite Elem.nt Analysis were solved with com.uter program.e code written in FORTRAN 90 while the thickness requirem.nts of each section of spherical pressure vessels subjected to different loading conditions were determ.ned. The results showed m.m.rane thickness decreasing from.the base upwards for LNG vessels but constant thickness for com.ressed gas vessels. The obtained results were validated using values obtained from.ASm. Section VIII Part UG. The results showed no significant difference (P > 0.05) with values obtained through ASm.
