N-doped ZnO thin films were deposited on 304L stainless steel through the pyrolysis of zinc acetate and ammonium acetate in different ratios at a temperature of 420 ℃ using metal organic chemical vapor *** and structural analyzes of the films were performed by using Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy and X-ray *** frictional behavior of the thin films and 304L stainless steel substrate was evaluated using a ball-on-flat configuration with reciprocating sliding under marginally lubricated and fully flooded *** alloy (2017) was used as ball counterface,while basestock synthetic polyalfaolefin oil (PAO10) without additives was used as *** flat and ball counterface surfaces were examined to assess the wear dimension and failure *** marginally lubricated condition,N-doped ZnO thin films provided significant reduction in friction,whereas the films have minimal or no effect in friction under fully flooded condition.N-doped ZnO thin films showed a significant effect in protecting the ball counterface as wear volume was reduced compared with that of the substrate under the marginally lubricated *** the fully flooded condition,with the exception of one of the films,the wear volume of the N-doped ZnO thin films ball reduced compared with that of the *** all the ball counterfaces for N-doped ZnO thin films under both conditions,wear occurred through abrasive mechanism of various degrees or mild ***,superfluous lubrication of N-doped ZnO thin films is not necessary to reduce friction and wear.

Comparative assessment of intestinal helminths prevalence in Water,Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) intervention and non-intervention communities in Abeokuta,Nigeria

Objective:This study compared the prevalence of intestinal helminths in Water,Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) intervention and non-intervention communities in Abeokuta,***:Stool samples were collected from 225 respondents in a study carried out between July and November,*** samples were examined for presence of helminths using Formol-Ether concentration *** collected from stool samples were analyzed using SPSS for Windows(version 16).Results:Results showed that,at the intervention community,88 out of 113 respondents were infected with at least one helminth infection while at non-intervention community,80 out of 112 respondents were *** result revealed overall helminth prevalence of78% at Mawuko and 71% at *** both intervention(Mawuko) and non-intervention(Isolu) communities,hookworm was the most prevalent helminth observed(21% and18%,respectively) followed by Ascaris lumbricoides(13% and 13%,respectively),Taenia sp.(4% and 3%,respectively) and Trichostrongylus sp.(1% and 3%,respectively).Cases of single infections of Trichuris trichiura,Strongyloides stercoralis and Hymenolepsis nana were observed only at the non-intervention ***,*** occurred in the multiple infections observed at the intervention *** more(p < 0.05) cases of infections were observed in male(46%) at the intervention community than female(31%) while in non-intervention community females(39%) were significantly(p < 0.05) more infected than their male counterparts(32%).Conclusions:This study concludes that the Community Led-Total Sanitation intervention programme,which was executed in Mawuko was not effective as expected.

Pre-Weaning Growth Traits in Nigerian Indigenous Pig Crossbreds

Forty-seven hybrid progenies from crossbreeding between the Nigerian indigenous pig (NIP) and Large white pigs were used. Body measurements and live weight were recorded weekly from first week of birth to their weaning date. Body measurements taken were Body Weight (BW), Body Length (BL), Body Height (BH), Heart girth (HG) and Rump circumference (RC) of crossbred progenies. The correlation between the reproductive parameters and growth performance of hybrid pigs were established with good management practice. The mean for weaning weight was 6.72 ± 0.02, birth weight 0.91 ± 0.13, litter size at birth 5.36 ± 1.87, litter size at weaning 5.29 ± 1.97, litter weight at birth 4.56 ± 1.57, total litter weight at weaning 33.91 ± 11.6, average daily weaning weight 0.73 ± 0.12, average litter size at birth 0.93 ± 0.11 and sex ratio 97.78% ± 8.61%. The male and female mean values for weight of animals were 6.96 ± 1.0 and 6.52 ± 0.9 with male heavier in weight and higher in morphometric traits such as body length, heart girth and rump circumference, while the female were high in morphometric traits such as snout length, ear length and body height. The correlation matrix for body weight against linear body measurements in pre-weaned NIP crossbreds indicates that all the parameters could be used to select for body weight. The linear equation generated by regressing body weight on snout length, body height, rump circumference, heart girth and body length could be used by resource poor pig farmers in the estimation of body weight of pre weaned crossbreds pigs if they cannot afford weighing scales.

Preparation and Some Properties of Metal Organic Chemical Vapour Deposited Al-Doped ZnO Thin Films Using Single Solid Precursors

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Aluminium doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited on soda lime glass by Metal Organic Chemical Vapour deposition technique (MOCVD), using prepared compound mixtures of Zinc Acetate di-hydrate (Zn(CH3COO)2⋅2H2O;ZAD) and Aluminium Acetyl-Acetonate (Al(C5H702)3;AAA) precursors at a temperature of 420°C. Effects of the varying mole percent concentrations of AAA precursor additives on the Al dopant concentrations in ZnO were systematically studied. The observations were made via investigations carried out on the morphological, optical, electrical and compositional properties of the deposited thin films. The thin films morphology was found to be strongly dependent on the varying concentration of AAA in the precursor mixtures. The average optical transmittance of the thin films in the uv-visible region was over 85% except 5 mol.% Al. While the energy band gaps were found to be in range of 3.27 - 3.36 eV. There is a blue-shift of the energy band edge observed between 0 and 5 mol.% AAA, which may be due to Burstein-Moss’ band gap widening effect and an opposing band gap renormalization effect at 10 mol.% AAA along with an extra band gap stabilization effect (Roth’s effect) at 15 mol.% AAA in rather quasi-sinusoidal or anomalous behaviour. The optical transmittance and electrical conductivity of ZnO were enhanced with addition of Al dopants. The RBS confirm the presence of Al, Zn and O, and evidence that Al dopants were successfully incorporated into the ZnO.

The microstructural effects of aqueous extract of Garcinia kola(Linn) on the hippocampus and cerebellum of malnourished mice

Objective:To assess the neuroprotective effects of aqueous extract of Garcinia kola on neurotoxin administered malnourished mice adopting histological ***:The study was carried out using thirty-two adult malnourished mice which were randomly assigned into four groups(n=8):A,B,C and *** A served as control,while the other groups served as the experimental *** in group A were fed malnourished diet ad libitum and given water *** in group B were administered with 3-Nitropropionic acid(3-NP)(neurotoxin)only at 20 rag/kg body weight,group C were given only Garcinia kola extracts,and group D were pre-treated with Garcinia kola extracts at 200 mg/kg for seven days prior to administration of neurotoxin at 20 mg/kg body *** three days of neurotoxins administration in the relevant groups,the brains were excised and fixed in formal calcium for histological ***:The study showed that hippocampal and cerebellar neurons of animals in group B exhibited some cellular degeneration and blood vessel blockage,which were not seen in groups A,C and *** violet staining was least intense in group B than in groups A,C and *** the fact that animals in group D has equal administration of 3-Nitropropionic acid concentration,there were no traces of neural degeneration as it was evidenced in group ***:It is concluded that Garcinia kola has protective effects on the neurons of the hippocampus and cerebellum of malnourished mice.

Evaluation of Entrance Skin Dose from Paediatric Diagnostic X-Ray Examination

As children are prone to be more radiosensitive than adults, it is imperative to assess the Entrance Skin Doses (ESDs) for patients being examined by X-rays, in order to ensure the optimization of dose while considering a number of other fickles. The ESD received by 50 paediatrics (aged 1-13 years) undergoing 8 types of X-ray examinations were measured at Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, Ekiti, Nigeria, within a period of February 2019 to March 2020 using thermoluminescent dosimeters. The mean ± SD of ESDs were 0.85 ± 0.32, 2.04 ± 0.75, 0.60 ± 0.07, 0.62 ± 0.22, 0.57 ± 0.24, 1.75 ± 0.76, 0.93 ± 0.31 and 0.63 ± 0.06 mGy for Chest, Skull, Hand, Forearm, Knee, Abdomen, Leg and Feet, respectively. The mean ESDs were found to be within the recommended reference dose in all examinations, except for the Chest examination which was higher. The data obtained in this study will serve as existing data in Nigeria for future research works, as it would assist in optimizing dose to patients, especially the paediatrics.

Characterization of High Yield Graphene Oxide Synthesized by Simplified Hummers Method

Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically synthesized from natural flake graphite (NFG) using the simplified Hummers method. The synthesis was carried out using two routes. The first route involved stirring the one pot mixture continuously for three days at ambient temperature while the second route involved stirring another one pot mixture for six days also at ambient temperature. The two GOs were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Raman Spectroscopy and UV-Visible Spectrometry. The FTIR spectra showed introduction of oxygen functionalities in both GO with a higher degree of oxidation in the 6-day synthesized GO while the EDX confirmed the presence of carbon and oxygen in the GOs. The SEM micrograph gave the typical wrinkle and crumpling present in the 3-day synthesized GO while the 6-day synthesized GO showed distortion in structures. The Raman spectra showed a slightly higher ID/IG ratio for the 3-day synthesized GO with the 6-day synthesized GO showing a greater disruption of the sp2 domains. The extended period of stirring and oxidation increased the band gap of the 6-day synthesized GO to 3.0 eV unlike the 3-day synthesized GO where 2.5 eV was observed.

The COVID-19 pandemic drastically altered traffic patterns across the *** more people staying at home and relying on delivery services,there was a reduction in passenger car traffic but an increase in freight *** study investigates the changes in traffic volume and mode splits during the COVID-19 pandemic at the intersection of Broening Highway and Holabird Avenues and investigates traffic signal reallocation strategies that account for the changes in *** study considers morning peak traffic volumes before and during COVID.A methodology was developed to evaluate and measure freight volumes and *** the literature,the cost per kilogram of CO,VOC,and NOx was$5.85,$3,37,and$12.53,*** intersection operated at a level of service(LOS)of C both pre-COVID and during *** volume decreased by 24.3%during COVID at the study location;car volumes declined by 50%,and truck volumes increased by 130%.The total rate of emissions decreased by 22.6%.

Evaluating the Influence of Ageing Temperature on the Mechanical Properties of Al-Mg-Si Alloy

The effect of ageing temperature on the mechanical properties of Al-Mg-Si alloy has been studied. The material was machined into different shapes of the tests to be carried out: tensile, impact and hardness. The test specimens were divided into two and, some sets were solution treated at 500℃ for one hour and peak aged at 160℃ for eight hours while the other sets were solution treated at 500℃ for one hour and peak aged at 180℃ for eight hours. The abovementioned tests were carried out on the specimens. The results show that at low ageing temperature of 160℃, the ductility and impact were high while at 180℃, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness are higher compared to the value obtained at 160℃.
