Background: Symptomatic pelvic organ prolapse (POP) impacts the sufferers’ quality of life negatively. There is a preference for a mechanical device in certain conditions though the definitive management of POP is surgical. Objectives: We conducted the study to evaluate the outcome of management of POP using mechanical devices. Methods: It was a prospective study. It took place in the gynecology unit of the Bowen University Teaching Hospital Ogbomoso between May 2014 and April 2019. We followed up with eligible patients who opted for pessary use for a median duration of 18 months (Range 12 - 84 months). We excluded those who refuse to participate in the study. Results: Of the 127 patients with symptomatic POP, seventy-five (59.1%) opted for the use of mechanical devices, and 70 successfully retained them four weeks after insertion. Sawdust which is basically considered as?a timber-industrial waste?that pollutes the environment can become a valuable commodity which is considered in three ways: Manufacturing, Energy and Agricultural utilization. The sawdust is burnt in an updraft gasifier under a limited supply of air to obtain?producer gas which is carbon II oxide and hydrogen as main components. The sawdust and other biomass materials are mixed in certain proportions, then bound together and palletized to a small blocks called briquettes. The material?was also considered to be composted by mixing it with animal digestion or?wood ashes and calcium carbonate to form fertilizers. The sawdust and wood shavings can be used for particle board as well as oil production.

Antibacterial resistance is a source of great concern in the effective prevention and treatment of infections caused by bacteria,making the development of requisite therapeutics a major challenge.N-(Nitrophenyl)cycloamino acids are important compounds in the synthesis of poly-condensed nitrogen-containing heterocycles with marked activities in many biological systems.A series of substituted N-(o-nitrophenyl)cycloamino-2-carboxylic acids 3a–3g were synthesized via the condensation reaction of substituted o-halogenonitrobenzenes with L-proline 2a and D,L-pipecolinic acid 2b,under refluxing alcoholic basic conditions in excellent *** synthesized compounds were characterised by FT-IR,(1H&13C)NMR,UV-Vis,mass spectroscopy and elemental *** antibacterial activities were evaluated against five Gram-positive and five Gram-negative bacterial strains using the broth micro-dilution *** antibacterial activities of the synthesized compounds were compared with streptomycin and nalidixic acid as standard antibiotic *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)values of compounds 3a–3g revealed good antibacterial activities against the tested *** 3a–3g were more potent than nalidixic acid against Enterococcus faecalis,Mycobacterium smegmatis,Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris and also more potent than streptomycin against Enterobacter cloacae and Staphylococcus *** 3a,3c and 3g displayed the highest antibacterial potency with an MIC value of 15.6μg/mL against ***,*** and ***,*** results indicated that these aryl cycloamino acids with antibacterial activities had potential applications as substitutes for antimicrobial peptide antibiotics,which are not susceptible to bacterial resistance,to solve the problem of drug resistance.

Objectives: Rapid and accurate identification of persons infected with SARS-CoV-2 which causes COVID-19 is key to managing the pandemic. The urgent need to scale up access to COVID-19 testing in Nigeria has led to the government’s introduction of the use of COVID-19 Ag rapid diagnostic test (RDT) across various settings in the country. However, field performance evaluation of the rapid SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection test is required to be conducted periodically and compared with the gold standard real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test for diagnosis of COVID-19 cases. Design: A prospective COVID-19 screening and un-blinded verification of the performance of the STANDARD Q COVID-19 Ag test kit. Setting: The rapid SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection test, StandardTM Q COVID-19 Ag kit was compared with the RT-PCR test for detection of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal samples for COVID-19 screening from persons and personnel attending a national youth camp orientation exercise during the second wave of the COVID-19 outbreak (January to March 2021) in Ondo state, southwest Nigeria. Participants: Three hundred fifty-one persons and personnel were screened for COVID-19 infection. Results: Of 351 respondents screened, 68 (19.4%) were positive, and 264 (75.2%) were negative for both COVID-19 Ag RDT and RT-PCR assay. The rapid SARS-CoV-2 antigen detection test’s sensitivity and specificity were 78.16% (95% CI = 68.02% - 86.31%) and 100.0% (95% CI = 98.61% - 100.0%), respectively and the diagnostic accuracy was 94.59% (95% CI: 92 - 97). 通过荧光效应可实现对稀土掺杂热障涂层的热历史追踪及损伤诊断。但此方法应用的前提是验证稀土元素掺杂对YSZ热障涂层本征性能产生的影响。采用大气等离子喷涂(APS)方法制备了2mol%Eu掺杂YSZ涂层和未掺杂的传统YSZ涂层;利用闪光型导热仪测量了2种涂层在100-1100°C范围内的热导率;使用能够输出1100°C稳定丙烷火焰的燃烧室综合实验台对2种涂层进行每1小时为1个循环的焰流热冲击实验;通过界面压痕法测试并计算了涂层金属粘结层与陶瓷面层之间的界面断裂韧性。结果表明,APS法制备的2种涂层孔隙率处于同一水平,均为8±1.2%;在相同温度下,YSZ:Eu涂层的热导率比YSZ涂层低10-19%,说明2mol%Eu掺杂可有效降低YSZ热障涂层的热导率;对于这2种类型的涂层,界面断裂韧性均随热冲击循环次数的增加而降低,TGO厚度随热冲击循环次数的增加而增大;在相同条件下,YSZ:Eu涂层的界面断裂韧性略高于YSZ涂层3-8%,且TGO厚度更小,表明2mol%Eu掺杂抑制了TGO的生长,改善了涂层的界面性能。

The incompleteness of patient health data is a threat to the management of COVID-19 in Africa and *** has become particularly clear with the recent emergence of new variants of *** Virus Outbreak Data Network(VODAN)-Africa has studied the curation of patient health data in selected African countries and identified that health information flows often do not involve the use of health data at the point of care,which renders data production largely meaningless to those producing *** modus operandi leads to disfranchisement over the control of health data,which is extracted to be processed *** response to this problem,VODAN-Africa studied whether or not a design that makes local ownership and repositing of data central to the data curation process,would have a greater chance of being *** design team based their work on the legal requirements of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation(GDPR);the FAIR Guidelines on curating data as Findable,Accessible(under well-defined conditions),Interoperable and Reusable(FAIR);and national regulations applying in the context where the data is *** study concluded that the visiting of data curated as machine actionable and reposited in the locale where the data is produced and renders services has great potential for access to a wider variety of data.A condition of such innovation is that the innovation team is intradisciplinary,involving stakeholders and experts from all of the places where the innovation is designed,and employs a methodology of co-creation and capacity-building.

The study examined the contamination levels of the soil and plantain leaves in three communities in Atakunmosa west local government area of Osun State in southwest Nigeria, where gold mining activities have recently become intensive. Plantain is a major food crop, whose leaves are used to wrap food items for household consumption. The objectives were to examine the heavy metal concentrations in the soil and plantain leaves around the gold mine site and compare them with standard recommended safe limits for the environment. Soil and plantain leaves were sampled at different locations around the sites and at a control site from a neighboring local government area with no history of gold mining activities between March 2015 and February 2016. Both soil and leave samples were processed and analyzed for selected heavy metals (Cd, As, Cu, Zn, Cr, Mn and Fe) using the Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) in the laboratory. The study showed higher concentrations than the World Health Organization’s recommended safe limits of the heavy metals in the soils and plantain leaves. Dry season concentrations of the variables were also higher than the wet season and the heavy metal concentrations at the control station were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than those of the mining environment. The study concluded that the ecosystems in the artisanal gold mining region are vulnerable to bioaccumulation of heavy metals and the leaves from the sites are sources of heavy metal contamination if consumed or used to wrap food items.

Two flavoured extruded products were developed by co-extruding yam grits (750 μm) obtained from white yam (Dioscorea rotundata) and bambara groundnut flour (250 μm) in 160:40 respectively obtained from white bambara groundnut with added flavouring agents of salt (1% - 3%) and sugar (4% - 6%) in the feed blends at screw speed of 70 rpm, 17.5%, feed moisture and at the barrel temperature of 145℃. The extruded products were packaged in low density polyethylene bag (0.02 μm gauge size) and stored at room temperature (28℃ ± 2℃) and at refrigeration temperature (9℃ ± 2℃) for a period of twenty weeks. The microbiological changes in the extruded products as determined by the total plate under both storage conditions showed that maximum total plate counts were 0.5 × 104 and 5.4 × 104 cfu/g at 9℃ ± 2℃ and 28℃ ± 2℃ respectively. Nutritional evaluation studies of extrudates were comparable (p ≥ 0.05) with standard casein diet with minimum crude protein content of 13.51% providing 1707.2 KJ energy per 100gof diet and supported weight gain and growth of laboratory animals.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Aluminium doped ZnO (AZO) thin films were deposited on soda lime glass by Metal Organic Chemical Vapour deposition technique (MOCVD), using prepared compound mixtures of Zinc Acetate di-hydrate (Zn(CH3COO)2⋅2H2O;ZAD) and Aluminium Acetyl-Acetonate (Al(C5H702)3;AAA) precursors at a temperature of 420°C. Effects of the varying mole percent concentrations of AAA precursor additives on the Al dopant concentrations in ZnO were systematically studied. The observations were made via investigations carried out on the morphological, optical, electrical and compositional properties of the deposited thin films. The thin films morphology was found to be strongly dependent on the varying concentration of AAA in the precursor mixtures. The average optical transmittance of the thin films in the uv-visible region was over 85% except 5 mol.% Al. While the energy band gaps were found to be in range of 3.27 - 3.36 eV. There is a blue-shift of the energy band edge observed between 0 and 5 mol.% AAA, which may be due to Burstein-Moss’ band gap widening effect and an opposing band gap renormalization effect at 10 mol.% AAA along with an extra band gap stabilization effect (Roth’s effect) at 15 mol.% AAA in rather quasi-sinusoidal or anomalous behaviour. The optical transmittance and electrical conductivity of ZnO were enhanced with addition of Al dopants. The RBS confirm the presence of Al, Zn and O, and evidence that Al dopants were successfully incorporated into the ZnO.

Pre-Weaning Growth Traits in Nigerian Indigenous Pig Crossbreds

Forty-seven hybrid progenies from crossbreeding between the Nigerian indigenous pig (NIP) and Large white pigs were used. Body measurements and live weight were recorded weekly from first week of birth to their weaning date. Body measurements taken were Body Weight (BW), Body Length (BL), Body Height (BH), Heart girth (HG) and Rump circumference (RC) of crossbred progenies. The correlation between the reproductive parameters and growth performance of hybrid pigs were established with good management practice. The mean for weaning weight was 6.72 ± 0.02, birth weight 0.91 ± 0.13, litter size at birth 5.36 ± 1.87, litter size at weaning 5.29 ± 1.97, litter weight at birth 4.56 ± 1.57, total litter weight at weaning 33.91 ± 11.6, average daily weaning weight 0.73 ± 0.12, average litter size at birth 0.93 ± 0.11 and sex ratio 97.78% ± 8.61%. The male and female mean values for weight of animals were 6.96 ± 1.0 and 6.52 ± 0.9 with male heavier in weight and higher in morphometric traits such as body length, heart girth and rump circumference, while the female were high in morphometric traits such as snout length, ear length and body height. The correlation matrix for body weight against linear body measurements in pre-weaned NIP crossbreds indicates that all the parameters could be used to select for body weight. The linear equation generated by regressing body weight on snout length, body height, rump circumference, heart girth and body length could be used by resource poor pig farmers in the estimation of body weight of pre weaned crossbreds pigs if they cannot afford weighing scales.
