Methanolic extract of African mistletoe(Viscum album) improves carbohydrate metabolism and hyperlipidemia in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Objective:To justify the use of African mistletoe(AM) Viscum album {***) in folkoric medicine to treat ***:In one experiment,the fasting blood glucose(FBG) leveb of diabetic rats were monitored for 4 *** rats were treated with AM at doses of 50 mg/kg(AM1) and 100 mg/kg(AM2),glibenclamide(GB)(positive control) and saline solution(SS).In another experiment,diabetic rats were treated with AM2,GB and SS daily for 3 ***:AM1 and AM2 elicited significant(P<0.05) hypoglycaemic effects within 4 h of extract administration. AM1 and AM2 decreased the FBG by 41%and 49%,respectively,at 2 ***2 was found to lower FBC by 51%,relative to baseline,which was comparable to GB at 3 *** the second experiment, AM2 and GB significantly(P<0.05) decreased the FBG by 34%and 51%,*** was followed by marked decrease in levels of HbAlC in AM2- and GB- treated diabetic ***2 significantly(P<0.05) decreased the STZ-induced increase in levels of serum triglyceride,urea, lactate dehydrogenase,α-amylase and low-density ***, diabetic rats treated with AM2 had significanlly(P<0.05) elevated high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol. In contrast,STZ administration produced insignificant(P<0.05) effect on the levels of serum creatinine and total ***:Extract of African mistletoe has anti-diabetic and anti-hyperlipidemic effects in STZ-diabetic *** may find clinical application in the amelioration of diabetes-induced lipid disorders.

Impediments to clinical diagnosis and management of juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in Ilorin, Nigeria

Background: To report the impediments to the diagnosis and management of children with JuvenileOnset Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis as seen in a teaching hospital in West Africa. Methods: Retrospectively analysed study of participants requiring surgical intervention for histologically confirmed juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis managed at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin over a 10-year period (2002-2011) using prospectively collated database. Results: Juvenile-Onset Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis constituted 8.8% of 307 laryngeal pathologies seen during the study period. 18 (66.7%) were males and 9 (33.3%) females with a sex ratio (M:F) of 2:1. Age ranged from 1 year 4 months to 12 years with a mean age of 6.1 years (SD = 2.78), with the 6 - 10 age group constituting the largest categories in 51.9% of patients seen. Patients from low socioeconomic class constituted slightly over half of the patients studied (51.9%). 55.5% of the patients presented late (>13 months). All patients presented with hoarseness, stridor and difficulty in breathing. Misdiagnosis made by the referring clinician included Asthma, Laryngo-tracheo-bronchitis, Foreign body aspiration and Laryngomalacia. Involvement of the glottis occurred in 70.4% of cases seen, while bilateral involvement was present in 91.3% of cases operated. Recurrence was seen in 63.0% of the patients and the best attendance at follow-up clinic was during the first three months post surgical extirpation. Emergency tracheostomy was done to relieve airway obstruction in 17 (63.0%) patients. Conclusion: Impediments to diagnosis and management of JORRP are multifactorial. Misdiagnosis, late presentation and poor follow-up clinic attendance of patients with JORRP is still a common occurrence among the physicians. Recommendations on how to improve management and outcome of JORRP were made.

Antioxidant, antiangiogenic and antiproliferative activities of root methanol extract of Calliandra portoricensis in human prostate cancer cells

OBJECTIVE： Prostate cancer（PCa） is a major health concern. Calliandra portoricensis（CP） is traditionally known for its analgesic, anti-ulcerogenic and anticonvulsant properties. However, its antiproliferative properties for PCa still need to be investigated. METHODS： Antioxidant activities of CP were determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl（DPPH） and hydroxyl（OH-） radicals-scavenging methods. PC-3 and LNCa P（androgen-refractory and androgendependent PCa-derived cell lines） were cultured and treated with CP（10, 50 and 100 μg/m L）. Effects of CP on cells were determined by cytotoxicity assay（lactate dehydrogenase, LDH） and viability assay（sodium 3′-[1-（phenylaminocarbonyl）-3,4-tetrazolium]-bis（4-methoxy-6-nitro） benzene sulfonic acid hydrate, XTT）. DNA fragmentation was detected by cell death detection enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay plus kit. CP was tested as an inhibitor of angiogenesis using chicken chorioallantoic membrane（CAM） assay. RESULTS： CP showed significant scavenging of DPPH and OH- radicals. CP significantly（P〈0.05） inhibited lipid peroxidation in a dose-dependent manner. Precisely, CP（10, 50 and 100 μg/m L） inhibited PC-3 and LNCa P growth by 7%, 74% and 92%, and 27%, 73%, and 85% respectively at 48 h. CP had low toxicity in vitro at its half inhibitory concentration dose. Detection of cell death induced by CP at 50 μg/m L showed higher enrichment factors in LNCa P（7.38±0.95） than PC-3（3.48±0.55）. Also, treatment with CP（50 μg/m L） significantly reduced network of vessels in CAM, suggesting its antiangiogenic potential. CONCLUSION： Calliandra portoricensis elicited antioxidant, antiangiogenic and antiproliferative effects in PCa cells.

This study investigated bacteria that are associated with milt in cultured samples of African catfish-Clarias *** broodstocks of Clarias gariepinus were collected from private Fish Farm in Ogun State,Nigeria,while the fish’s milt was collected and analyzed for microbial load at laboratory of the Department of Microbiology,Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta,Ogun *** molecular characterization of the amplicon was done at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture,***-edit was used for importing and mining nucleotide sequences into gene *** revealed by the results,bacterial organisms that were present in the milt of Clarias gariepinus are Aeromonas caviae,Proteus mirabilis,Serratia rubidaea,Pseudomonas mosselii,Acinetobacter soli and Klebsiella *** Basic Local Alignment Search Tools revealed the percentage similarity ranging from 86%-97.04%and their accession *** bacteria indicated high levels of faecal contamination in the *** conclusion,bacteria were found in the milt of cultured catfish and are capable of being pathogenic to humans and may increase the vertical transfer to fry during breeding and rearing ***,fish farmers should maintain a hygiene and serene environment during breeding and culturing of catfish.
