Role of intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography in intracoronary imaging for coronary artery disease:a systematic review

The Value of Support Group Participation in Influencing Adherence to Antiretroviral Treatment among People Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

Advances in antiretroviral therapy for both Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) treatment and prevention have increased interest in adherence to HIV treatment. This is because the individual patient and public health benefits of antiretroviral treatment?(ART) greatly depend on the extent to which people living with HIV (PLHIV) adhere to the prescribed daily dosing regimens. Studies have shown that nonadherence to ART increases drug resistance, morbidity and person-to-person HIV transmission. Public health experts are trying different innovations to enhance ART adherence, including promoting support groups of PLHIV. The purpose of this study was to determine the value of support group participation in enhancing ART adherence. The study used a cross-sectional design to compare ART adherence among PLHIV who participate in support group activities and those who do not. Respondents were adults who were initiated on ART between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2012. Multistage probability sampling was used to select study sites and respondents. Data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire from 1676 respondents between February and May 2014. Data was analyzed using STATA. Univariate analysis was carried out to generate descriptive statistics, while Chi-square tests were used to examine if there was an association between participation in support group activities and antiretroviral treatment adherence. ART adherence was self-reported by 745/788 (95%) and 814/888 (92%) respondents who had ever and had never participated in support group activities respectively. Among respondents who reported nonadherence to ART, 74/117 (8%) had never participated in support group activities compared to just 43/117 (5%) who participated in support group activities. These findings suggest that PLHIV who participate in support group activities are more likely to adhere to ART than those who do not participate. Laboratory Quality Audit in 25 Anti-Retroviral Therapy Facilities in North West of Nigeria

Introduction: A laboratory’s ability to consistently produce high-quality and reliable results hinges on adopting laboratory standards that guide daily practices to ensure steady quality improvement. Although assessment is an extremely rewarding exercise in health care quality improvement processes, it is always considered very time consuming and expensive in developing world settings. A quarterly internal audit was conducted in 25 FHI360 supported Antiretroviral Treatment laboratories in the North West of Nigeria which can surely provide reference for other countries. Methodology: A checklist adapted from the World Health Organization/African Regional Office laboratory accreditation checklist was used to quantitatively evaluate 7 quality essentials (QEs). A team composed of technical staff from FHI360, State Ministry of Health and facility laboratory heads, conducted the audits, developed and monitored intervention plans. Information obtained with the checklist was captured in excel, validated and imported into Grappa Prism software version 5.0 for analysis. Results: Most (92%) facilities were at secondary level with (8%) at tertiary level. The mean total score on all QEs across the facilities was 63.34 ± 9.77 in quarter (Q) 1, 68.8 ± 10.91 in Q2, 72.59 ± 8.02 in Q3 and 72.72 ± 9.16 in Q4 (p ≤ 0.0001). The most improved QE through Q1-Q4 was organization and personnel (32.2%), while signage/bench top reference had an 18.6% point decline. In ranking facilities based on differences of total scores between Q4 and Q1, Kachia General Hospital was the highest with 27 point increase. Considering the mean percentage score for all quarters per facility, 4 had ≥ 80%, 19 had between 60%-80% and 2 had <60%. The total non-conformities cited for QI-Q4 were 185, 100, 78 and 64 respectively with highest recorded in internal and external quality control and the least in facility and safety. Simulation studies on optimizing oil productivity in oil rim reservoirs under gas cap blow down production strategy

Gas cap blow down strategy is normally deployed for Ultra-thin oil rim reservoirs with huge gas caps due to extremely high gas oil ratios from wells in such *** current state leads to loss of production from the oil reserves due to high initial reservoir pressure thus,reducing its net present *** on important factors essential to the productivity of oil rim reservoirs are used to build a heterogeneous ultra-thin reservoir with a time step of 10,000 days using the Eclipse software and its embedded *** reservoir is subjected to a gas cap blowdown via a gas well,then an oil well is initiated into the model at onset and after time periods of 2000 days,4000 days,6000 days and 8000 days to estimate the oil *** is expected that due to the large nature of the gas cap,pressure decline will be drastic and leading to a low oil recovery,hence the injection of water and gas at different rates at the periods *** results indicate an oil recovery of 4.3%during gas cap blow down and 10.34%at 6000 *** oil recoveries of 12.64%and 10.80%are estimated under 30,000 Mscf/day at 4000 days and 1000 stb/day at 6000 days *** shows an incremental oil recovery of 8.34%and 6.5%over that recorded during gas cap blow *** results also indicate that the gas production at those periods was not greatly affected with an estimated increment of 257 Bscf recorded during 30,000 Mscf/day at 4000 *** secondary injection schemes at the respective time steps had positive impact on the overall oil *** is recommended that extra production and injection wells be drilled,enhanced oil recovery options and injection patterns be considered to further increase oil recovery.

Application of thermotolerant petroleum microbes at reservoir conditions for enhanced oil recovery

Background:Children with sickle cell disease(SCD)are particularly prone to pneumococcal infection and administration of Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccine in Nigerian children with SCD is yet to be wide *** call for the need to study humoral immune responses stimulated by Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccine in SCD children to confirm the benefit or otherwise for the use of Prevenar 13 pneumococcal ***:The levels of humoral(innate and adaptive)immune factors and associated nutritionally essential trace elements were determined following Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccination of 23 Nigerian children with *** innate humoral immune factors[Complement factors(C1q and C4),transferrin,ferritin,and C-reactive protein(CRP)]and adaptive humoral immune factors[IgG,IgA,IgM,and IgE]were determined using *** essential trace elements such as iron(Fe),copper(Cu),and zinc(Zn)were measured also using an atomic absorption ***:The serum levels of certain innate humoral immune factors(ferritin,CRP,and C4),only one adaptive humoral immune factors(IgE),and essential trace elements(Fe,Zn,and Cu)were significantly elevated in children with SCD post Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccination when compared to prevaccination ***:Vaccination of children with SCD with Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccine was associated with increased levels of more innate humoral immune factors than adaptive *** study thus supports the administration of Prevenar 13 pneumococcal vaccination to children with SCD.

Evidence shows that pulmonary problems in coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)may set off from vascular injury that progresses to physiological disturbances through a compromised gas exchange,following an infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus *** this process,inefficient gas exchange in the alveolar could precipitate silent nonclinical ***,patients with“silent hypoxemia”do not necessarily experience any breathing difficulty(dyspnea)at the early stage of COVID-19 while the disease *** a result,several asymptomatic,presymptomatic and patients with mild symptoms may escape quarantine measure and thus continue to spread the virus through ***,early diagnosis of“silent hypoxemia“,which attracts no clinical warnings,could be an important diagnostic measure to prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome from the risk of pulmonary failure among the presymptomatic and as a screening tool in the asymptomatic who are hitherto potential spreaders of the virus.

Biomedical applications of magneto-responsive scaffolds

Stimuli-responsive biomaterials, capable of responding on-demand to changes in their local environment, have become a subject of interest in the field of regenerative medicine. Magneto-responsive biomaterials, which can be manipulated spatiotemporally via an external magnetic field, have emerged as promising candidates as active scaffolds for advanced drug delivery and tissue regeneration applications. These specialized biomaterials can be synthesized by physically and/or chemically incorporating magnetic nanoparticles into the biomaterial structure. However, despite their promising impact on the future of regenerative medicine, magneto-responsive biomaterials still have several limitations that need to be overcome before they can be implemented clinically in a reliable manner, as predicting their behavior and biocompatibility remains an ongoing challenge. This review article will focus on discussing the current fabrication methods used to synthesize magneto-responsive materials, efforts to predict and characterize magneto-responsive biomaterial behavior, and the application of magneto-responsive biomaterials as controlled drug delivery systems, tissue engineering scaffolds, and artificial muscles.

Background:The pitfall of top-down approach to development is identified as a major cause of aid *** approach is fraught with corruption and unethical practices that have bedeviled aid ***,the impact of remittances has been widely acknowledged in the national development ***:This study therefore reviews the extant foreign aid administrative norms and practices using various conceptual frameworks and diagrammatic representations with a view to identifying the inherent weaknesses in the ***:In the light of the findings,the study pitches its tent around the concept of remittances as a learning process for aid ***,the pro-poor and gender focus approaches of remittances to development,as well as its bottomup approach is proposed as a conceptual framework for aid ***:The study concludes that,strict adherence to bottom-up approaches proposed in this article would keep corruption and other unethical practices which have rendered the aid administrative process inefficient,to the barest minimum.
