Biostratigraphy, Palynofacies and Organic Geochemical Characterization of Three Wells, Western Offshore Niger Delta Nigeria

Ditch samples from AP-4, ER-51 and UK-2 offshore Niger Delta were subjected to biostratigraphic and organic geochemical analyses which entail foraminiferal, palynological, Spore Colour Index (SCI), Rock-Eval Pyrolysis and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. The results have established N19 and N17;N17, N16 and N15;and N9 and N8 biozones;and P600 and P700 palynological zones. The dominance of palynomaceral (PM) I and II suggests Type III kerogen. PM III and IV (Type II and IV) were recorded. SCI ranges from 3/4 to 5/6 suggesting an early to mature liquid hydrocarbon generation phase. Rock-Eval Pyrolysis shows that the Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Hydrogen Index (HI), Pyrolysis temperature (Tmax), and Vitrinite Reflectance (VRo) range from 2.48 wt% - 6.37 wt%, 78 - 258, 411°C - 431°C and 0.26% - 0.69% respectively suggesting high TOC of Type II/III kerogen. FTIR indices show Type I kerogen in all the wells. VRo results range from 0.4 - 0.5 indicating an immature source. High concentrations of aliphatic saturates in identified functional groups indicate a low biodegradation. The abundance and diversity of recovered assemblages and dominance of PM I and II suggest shallow depositional environments with an age range of late Miocene to early Pliocene. Palynomaceral, SCI, and Rock-Eval inference contradict FTIR kerogen type suggesting that IR spectroscopy might not be suitable for kerogen typing and origin. The geochemical and biostratigraphical inferences must be corroborated for a successful evaluation. However, the source rock in the study area has adequate organic matter with the prospect to generate both oil and gas at appropriate maturity.

Anti-inflammatory and membrane stabilizing properties of methyl jasmonate in rats

The present investigation was carried out to evaluate anti-inflammatory and membrane stabilizing properties of methyl jasmonate(MJ) in experimental rat models of acute and chronic *** effects of MJ on acute inflammation were assessed using carrageenan-induced rat's paw edema *** granuloma air pouch model was employed to evaluate the effects of MJ on chronic inflammation produced by carrageenan in *** number of white blood cells(WBC) in pouch exudates was estimated using light *** levels of biomarkers of oxidative stress,such as malondialdehyde(MDA),glutathione(GSH) and activity of antioxidant enzymes in the exudates,were determined using *** membrane stabilizing property of MJ was assessed based on inhibition of hemolysis of rat red blood cells(RBC) exposed to hypotonic *** results indicated that MJ(25-100 mg·kg-1,i.p.) produced significant anti-inflammatory activity in carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats(P < 0.05).MJ reduced the volume of pouch exudates and the number of WBC in carrageenan-induced granulomatous *** also exhibited potent antioxidant and membrane stabilizing *** conclusion,these findings suggest the therapeutic potentials of methyl jasmonate in disease conditions associated with inflammation and its anti-inflammatory activity may be related to its antioxidant and membrane stabilizing activities.

Effect of Monosodium Glutamate on Behavioral Phenotypes, Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress in Brain Tissues and Liver Enzymes in Mice

The effects of oral administration of low doses of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on behavioral phenotypes, biomarkers of oxidative stress in the brain and liver enzymes in mice were evaluated in this study. Mice were treated orally with MSG (100, 250 and 500 mg/kg) daily for 21 days before testing for behavioral phenotypes;memory, anxiety, spontaneous motor activity (SMA) and depression. Thereafter, the brain levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) as well as the activities of liver enzymes, aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were determined spectrophotometrically. MSG did not produce significant (P?> 0.05) impairment of memory in the Y-maze test. It also failed to modify the behaviors of mice in the elevated plus maze and light/dark transition tests of animal models of anxiety. MSG had no significant effect on SMA but produced depressive-like symptoms in the forced swim test at a dose of 500 mg/kg. Moreover, it increased the levels of MDA and decreased GSH concentrations in brain tissues of mice. The activity of AST and ALT were elevated in the blood of MSG-treated mice suggesting liver injury. Taken together, these findings suggested that MSG induced oxidative stress in the brain and impaired liver functions but did not produce any behavioral abnormalities in mice at lower doses.

Jobelyn^(■), a Sorghum-Based Nutritional Supplement Attenuates Unpredictable Chronic Mild Stress-Induced Memory Deficits in Mice

The ability of an organism to adapt to aversive stressful situations or life challenging circumstances is very crucial to its state of health and survival. However, breakdown in adaptation due to persistent uncontrollable stress, leads to impairment of bodily functions and onset of a variety of pathological disorders especially memory decline. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of Jobelyn®(JB), a potent antioxidant sorghum-based food supplement on unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS)-induced memory impairment in mice. Male Swiss mice were given JB (5 - 50 mg/kg, p.o) 30 min prior to exposure to UCMS for 14 consecutive days before testing for memory. Thereafter, the serum corticosterone level was estimated by using ELISA kits. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GSH) as well as acetylcholinesterase activity were estimated in the brain homogenate using spectrophotometer. Histology of the brain tissues and estimation of the populations of viable neurons in the hippocampal region were done after staining with hematoxyline and eosin. Our results showed that JB reversed memory impairment and suppressed corticosterone concentrations induced by UCMS. Moreover, JB reduced oxidative stress in the brain of UCMS-mice as shown by decreased MDA levels and elevated GSH concentrations. It also decreased brain acetylcholinesterase activity when compared with chronic stress group (p < 0.05). Furthermore, JB (5 - 10 mg/kg, p.o) offered significant protection against UCMS-induced degeneration and death of neuronal cells of the cornu ammonis 3 (CA3) of the hippocampal region of the brain indicating neuroprotection. Taken together, these findings suggest that JB attenuates memory deficits induced by UCMS in mice and may be useful therapeutically for stress-related cognitive dysfunctions.
