This study examines the spatial and temporal variation of onset and cessation of rainfall and greenness in the North East Arid Zone of Nigeria. Onset and cessation of greenness dates were determined from mean monthly time series of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) using Advance Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data for five meteorological stations in the zone for a period of nineteen years (1981-1999). Lowest growing days of six weeks were observed in Nguru (12.53°N, 10.28°E, alt.343 m), Potiskum (11.42°N, 11.02°E, alt.415 m) and Maiduguri (11.51°N, 13.05°E, alt. 354 m), while Yola (12.28°N, 9.14°E, alt.174 m) and Bauchi (10.17°N, 9.49°E, alt.609 m) have growing days of 15 and 16 weeks respectively. Highest rate of greenness of 0.18/month was observed inMaiduguriwhile the lowest rate of green-up of 0.07/month was observed in Bauchi. Similarly, highest rate of senescence (0.08/month) was observed in Bauchi while lowest rate of senescence (0.04/month) was observed in Nguru.

In this study, the thermo-elastic effects of frictional heat generation in a disc brake system due to braking actions were simulated. The mathematical model that defined the problem was developed from the kinetic and potential energies of moving vehicles on the gradient surfaces. This problem was solved for the selected geometry of disc brake and pad with their material properties selected from existing literatures using the finite element method and the computational results were obtained. The thermal deformation obtained was in good agreement with similar literature results. Also, for the same braking period and conditions, the results showed that a vehicle ascending a hill gave a higher temperature rise, Von Mises stress and thermal deformation on brake contact surfaces than when descending hill. Therefore, the braking period required to bring a moving vehicle in ascendent motion to a lower speed is expected to be shorter because of the gravity effect than horizontal motion, while descendent motion requires longer braking period.

Suppression effect in multiple regression analysis may be more common in research than what is currently recognized. We have reviewed several literatures of interest which treats the concept and types of suppressor variables. Also, we have highlighted systematic ways to identify suppression effect in multiple regressions using statistics such as: R2, sum of squares, regression weight and comparing zero-order correlations with Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) respectively. We also establish that suppression effect is a function of multicollinearity;however, a suppressor variable should only be allowed in a regression analysis if its VIF is less than five (5).

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) can be considered as one of the most reliable and promising renewable systems. This is of great importance for developing countries like Nigeria especially in the rural communities where there is little or no access to electricity. The use of solar energy will no doubt contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of these villagers. Solar PV systems have been installed in some villages in Nigeria but unfortunately, the expected benefits from using these systems have been jeopardized. The objective of this work is to embark on performance assessments of in- stalled Solar PV system in Oke-Agunla, Akure local government of Ondo State in Nigeria. Visits were conducted to the village;equipments on ground were examined while the people were interviewed. Both functional and non-functional facilities were traced to their manufacturers using the identification data on them and rated to ensure their efficiencies. Energy demands were also prorated, and observed the need to improve on the present energy supplied. Results of the assessments shows that PV facilities used were inadequate, trained technicians were not available giving room for quacks working on the facilities occasionally resulted in further complications and poor facilities maintenance. The assessment result shows that just 14.52% of the 4.5 kW installed solar PV was utilized due to significant malfunctioning and deterioration in performance. It can be concluded from this study that the installed solar PV systems was inefficient as a result of poor maintenance, lack of technical know-how and inability of the project contractors or managers to take these factors into consideration while embarking on the solar PV installations.

<i>In Vitro</i>Screening and Selection of Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Spontaneously Fermenting Kunu-Zaki

The present study was conducted to determine the pro-biotic properties in vitro of the lactic acid bacteria isolated from spontaneously fermenting kunu-zaki. Kunu-zaki was processed using composite, non composite, germinated and ungerminated Digitaria exilis (Fonio), Sorghum bicolor (Sorghum) and Pennisetum americanum (Millet) cereals. A total of 150 LAB isolates were obtained from all the fermenting slurries. These 150 LAB isolates were screened for their ability to grow at pH 3.0, resistance against bile salt and ability to inhibit reference test pathogens. Out of these 150 LAB isolates;21 exhibited good probiotic properties. All the 21 isolates were further identified to specie and subspecies level using standard API50CHL system with all 21 showing good survival (P < 0.05) in a pH 3.0 buffered medium and subsequent resistance to 0.3% bile. The LAB isolates which survived these conditions consisted of 18 Lactobacillus species, 2 Pediococcus species and 1 Lactococcus specie. These LAB species were further examined for antimicrobial activity against the growth of reference pathogens Staphylococcus aureus 25923, Escherichia coli 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa 27853 and Enterococcus faecalis 29212. All 21 LAB species exhibited good inhibition of all test reference pathogens except Lactobacillus fructivorans, Lactococcus lactis sp lactis and L. fermentum which however, showed no zone of inhibition against the growth of E. faecalis. Kunu-zaki made from composite un-germinated Sorghum bicolor (Sorghum) and Pennisetum americanum (Millet) cereal grains contained the highest percentage (52%) of LAB species which showed good probiotic criteria in vitro. Non composite ungerminated cereals accounted for 33% of the total probiotic LAB isolates whilst the germinated non composite and composite cereals recorded the lowest percentage (10%) and (5%) of probiotic LAB respectively. Analysis of the Trend of Peri-Urban Development in Minna, Niger State

Current situation of development in Minna has raised many spatial challenges especially in the peri-urban areas. This study analyzed the spatial development of Minna between 1972 and 2015, with a view to determining the trend at which the peri-urban area changes over time. Minna topographical map of 1972, township map of 1979 and the satellite imageries covering 1986, 1996, 2006 and 2015 were employed in this study. Map processing and image classification techniques were used in extracting the information needed. The study revealed that there was over 2000% increase in the built-up area of Minna within the period understudied. This implies that the peri-urban areas of Minna by 2015 had grown about thirty-two times its size in 1972;thirteen its size in 1979;thrice its size in 1986 and 1996, respectively;and twice of its size in 2006, but, with an increased rate of uncoordinated and unplanned development. It concluded that the planning and development of Minna peri-urban areas should not be left to chance or the interplay of economic variables, but should be guided by strategies that will ensure orderly growth and development. It therefore recommended that the government through the statutory agencies should initiate a strategic development plan proposal known as Peri-urban Area Strategic Development Plans (PuASDP), which is to guide and control every spatial development activities in the peri-urban areas.

This study investigated the effect of fixed height standing-workstation on different people with diverse anthropometry dimensions. Measurements of some anthropometric and physiological parameters are carried out as bases for the calculation of body mass index (BMI) and the determination of the maximum heart rate (HRmax) and aerobic power (VO2max) of individual subject while performing manual cutting operation with hacksaw on fixed vice height of 940 mm. Twenty subjects (S1 to S20) parted 2 mm thick square-pipe of 25 mm × 25 mm. Each subject carried out cutting operation in 5 replicates and their physiological parameters during activities are measured to determine their expended energy (EE) and oxygen consumption rate (VO2). The results showed that subject S4 with BMI of 20.76 kg/m2 has maximum cutting rate of 5.33 stroke/s, while subject S8 with BMI of 23.39 kg/m2 has minimum cutting rate of 0.92 stroke/s. There was a statistically significant effect on the interaction between BMI, EE and Cutting rate, with F = 827.54, P = 0.000, R2 = 0.967 and S = 1.749 units. Subject S11 was discovered to have VO2 (28.54 l/min) and VO2max (24.36 ml/min/kg), with highest value of EE (2.94 kcal/min). Wear rates of 1.86 teeth/s and 9.55 teeth/s have the same energy cost (EE = 0.87 kcal/min) but different cutting time of 36.65 s (S18) and 10.89 s (S20) respectively. This could explain in-part that excess 25.76 s utilized in operation time by subject S18 is responsible for keeping approximately 7.7 teeth intact as regards tool management. EE and Tool Wear Rate in one-way analysis of variance, were statistically significant (F = 45.87, P = 0.000, R2 = 54.69% and S = 1.617 units) at 0.05 level.

A biomechanical model is developed and validated for breathing-induced deformation of human lung. Specifically, a subject-specific poro-elastic lung model is used to predict the displacement over the breathing cycle and compared with displacement derived from high resolution image registration. The lung geometry is derived from four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT) scan dataset of two human subjects. The heterogeneous Young’s modulus is estimated using inverse analysis method. The numerical simulation uses fluid-structure interaction technique to solve the coupled airflow equations and structural dynamics of the lung tissue. The modelled displacement is validated by comparison with the 4DCT registration results.

Advancements in Information Communication Technology (ICT) have led to several opportunities especially the ones provided by the Internet. Several people are now taking advantage of distance learning courses and in the past few years huge research efforts have been dedicated to the development of distance learning systems. So far, many e-learning systems are proposed and used practically. This paper focused on the development of an asynchronous and interactive Web-based e-learning system. Its primary objective is to develop a fast, reliable, effective and efficient web-based e-learning system that will address the problems associated with the traditional learning system. Succinctly, the paper discusses the design of a system that enhances e-learning where course lecturers can set their courses, tests and quizzes at their convenient time and can track the activities and performance of their students and guide them to acquire knowledge without being obliged to be physically present on the institution campus. The system was designed using PHP as the scripting language, Macromedia Dreamweaver for the web page, MySQL as the database and Apache as the web server. The system was implemented using real data and the result was successful. This system is no doubt a solution to the constraints of the classical learning system and can be used successfully in distance learning, training, and various educational institutions.
