This study investigated bacteria that are associated with milt in cultured samples of African catfish-Clarias *** broodstocks of Clarias gariepinus were collected from private Fish Farm in Ogun State,Nigeria,while the fish’s milt was collected and analyzed for microbial load at laboratory of the Department of Microbiology,Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta,Ogun *** molecular characterization of the amplicon was done at International Institute of Tropical Agriculture,***-edit was used for importing and mining nucleotide sequences into gene *** revealed by the results,bacterial organisms that were present in the milt of Clarias gariepinus are Aeromonas caviae,Proteus mirabilis,Serratia rubidaea,Pseudomonas mosselii,Acinetobacter soli and Klebsiella *** Basic Local Alignment Search Tools revealed the percentage similarity ranging from 86%-97.04%and their accession *** bacteria indicated high levels of faecal contamination in the *** conclusion,bacteria were found in the milt of cultured catfish and are capable of being pathogenic to humans and may increase the vertical transfer to fry during breeding and rearing ***,fish farmers should maintain a hygiene and serene environment during breeding and culturing of catfish.

Effects of soil physical properties on soil loss due to manual yam harvesting under a sandy loam environment

Soil degradation is a growing problem worldwide because it reduces the fertile top layer of the soil available for food production and one such degradative action is soil erosion due to the harvesting of *** loss due to crop harvesting with particular reference to yam tubers has not been quantified globally despite the fact that yam is a major staple food consumed worldwide and it is prevalent in many parts of *** yams in our environment is usually done with the soil attached to the yams due to the fact that farmers do not want additional work of removing soil attached to the *** study investigates the soil physical properties that influence soil loss due to yam harvesting in Abeokuta,South-Western Nigeria and to assess the quantity of soil loss due to yam *** on representative sampling area per location,yam tubers were harvested manually within the entire yam farmland from October to December *** weight,net weight and the amount of soil adhering to the yams were *** of soil physical properties such as soil moisture content,heap bulk density,inter-heap bulk density and soil texture were investigated with respect to soil *** results showed that moisture content ranged from 4%to 15%,heap bulk density ranged from 0.93 to 1.29 g cm^(-3) and inter-heap bulk density ranged from 1.03 to 1.50 g cm^(-3).They all had a positive correlation with soil *** particle size analysis for Federal University of Agricultural,Abeokuta(FUNAAB)and Alabata revealed that sand content was(86.78%and 88.32%),clay content(10.69%and 7.6%)and silt content,(2.53%and 4.08%)*** also revealed that clay content of the soil positively influenced the total soil loss during the yam *** mean soil losses in Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta(FUNAAB)and Alabata village yam farms were 4303 and 2125 kg/ha/harvest *** study also revealed that soil moisture content at harvesting time and clay

Runge-Kutta Schemes Coefficients Simulation for Comparison and Visual Effects

Runge-Kutta scheme is one of the versatile numerical tools for the simulation of engineering systems. Despite its wide and acceptable engineering use, there is dearth of relevant literature bordering on visual impression possibility among different schemes coefficients which is the strong motivation for the present investigation of the third and fourth order schemes. The present study capitalise on results of tedious computation involving Taylor series expansion equivalent supplemented with Butcher assumptions and constraint equations of well-known works which captures the essential relationship between the coefficients. The simulation proceeds from random but valid specification of two out of the total coefficients possible per scheme. However the remaining coefficients are evaluated with application of appropriate function relationship. Eight and thirteen unknown coefficients were simulated respectively for third and fourth schemes over a total of five thousand cases each for relevant distribution statistics and scatter plots analysis for the purpose of scheme comparison and visual import. The respective three and four coefficients of the slope estimate for the third and fourth schemes have mix sign for large number of simulated cases. However, none of the two schemes have above three of these coefficients lesser than zero. The percentages of simulation results with two coefficients lesser than zero dominate and are respectively 56.88 and 77.10 for third and fourth schemes. It was observed that both popular third and fourth schemes belong to none of the coefficients being zero classification with respective percentage of 0.72 and 3.28 intotal simulated cases. The comparisons of corresponding scatter plots are visually exciting. The overall difference between corresponding scatter plots and distribution results can be used to justify the accuracy of fourth scheme over its counterpart third scheme.

Numerical Analysis of Thermo-Elastic Contact Problem of Disc Brakes for Vehicle on Gradient Surfaces

In this study, the thermo-elastic effects of frictional heat generation in a disc brake system due to braking actions were simulated. The mathematical model that defined the problem was developed from the kinetic and potential energies of moving vehicles on the gradient surfaces. This problem was solved for the selected geometry of disc brake and pad with their material properties selected from existing literatures using the finite element method and the computational results were obtained. The thermal deformation obtained was in good agreement with similar literature results. Also, for the same braking period and conditions, the results showed that a vehicle ascending a hill gave a higher temperature rise, Von Mises stress and thermal deformation on brake contact surfaces than when descending hill. Therefore, the braking period required to bring a moving vehicle in ascendent motion to a lower speed is expected to be shorter because of the gravity effect than horizontal motion, while descendent motion requires longer braking period.

Performance Assessment of Installed Solar PV System: A Case Study of Oke-Agunla in Nigeria

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) can be considered as one of the most reliable and promising renewable systems. This is of great importance for developing countries like Nigeria especially in the rural communities where there is little or no access to electricity. The use of solar energy will no doubt contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of these villagers. Solar PV systems have been installed in some villages in Nigeria but unfortunately, the expected benefits from using these systems have been jeopardized. The objective of this work is to embark on performance assessments of in- stalled Solar PV system in Oke-Agunla, Akure local government of Ondo State in Nigeria. Visits were conducted to the village;equipments on ground were examined while the people were interviewed. Both functional and non-functional facilities were traced to their manufacturers using the identification data on them and rated to ensure their efficiencies. Energy demands were also prorated, and observed the need to improve on the present energy supplied. Results of the assessments shows that PV facilities used were inadequate, trained technicians were not available giving room for quacks working on the facilities occasionally resulted in further complications and poor facilities maintenance. The assessment result shows that just 14.52% of the 4.5 kW installed solar PV was utilized due to significant malfunctioning and deterioration in performance. It can be concluded from this study that the installed solar PV systems was inefficient as a result of poor maintenance, lack of technical know-how and inability of the project contractors or managers to take these factors into consideration while embarking on the solar PV installations.

Evaluation of Flowering Pattern, Yield and Yield Determinants of Hybrid Tea Rose in Response to Seasonal Variations and Applied Organic Manure Rates

Seasonal variations in environmental conditions can have significant influence on flowering pattern and yield of roses. Evaluation studies were conducted to determine the flowering pattern and yield determinants of two Hybrid Tea rose cultivars in response to seasonal variations under rain-fed conditions. The 2 × 2 × 4 factorial experiment arranged in split plot design at three replications was conducted at two seasons (dry and wet) using two cultivars (cv. “Immaculate” and “P.H. Baby”, white and red flowers respectively) supplied with poultry manure (PM) application rates at 5, 10 and 20 t/ha where the unfertilized (0 t/ha) served as control. The result showed that the year two environmental conditions of both experiment I and II significantly improved plant height, number of leaves, number of buds (CNB) and opened flowers (CNF) and flower yield (FYD). “Immaculate” was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) taller with more leaves but thinner girth. Although generally lower in NF/NB, and not different in FYD, the “P.H. Baby” had more flowers (CNB and CNF) in experiment I. Except for no significant difference in FYD and lower NF/NB recorded by all manure rates compared to control in experiment II, plants treated with 5 t/ha PM recorded more flowers (CNB and CNF). Significant first and second order interaction effects (p ≤ 0.05) showed that “Immaculate” had taller height and more leaves but “P.H. Baby” had more CNB and CNF, although both were not different in FYD. In addition, plants supplied with 5 t/ha PM rates were better in plant height, number of leaves, CNB and CNF compared to other manure rates. In conclusion, year two environmental conditions supported better crop growth and yield, “Immaculate” grew better vegetatively but both were not different in floral yield, while the 5 t/ha PM was considered the optimum manure application rate under the rain-fed condition.

Influence of Intercrop Population and Applied Poultry Manure Rates on Component Crops Productivity Responses in a Snake Tomato/Celosia Cropping System

Productivity responses using organic approaches will assist to elucidate crop responses under different intercrop population levels. Experiments were conducted to determine the growth, yield and productivity responses of component crops in snake tomato/celosia mixtures to intercrop population and organic manure application rates. The 4 × 4 factorial experiment arranged in completely randomized design (CRD) was replicated three times. The snake tomato using potting media was cultivated in 2013 and 2014 at 100,000 plants/ha (one plant/pot) alongside intercrop celosia at three population levels of 100,000 (P1), 200,000 (P2) and 300,000 plant/ha (P3) (10, 20 and 30 plants/pot respectively) where sole crops (P0) served as control. The crop mixture was supplied with poultry manure (PM) at 5 (F1), 10 (F2) and 20 t/ha (F3) using the unfertilized (0 t/ha-F0) as control. The result showed that plants in “year II” had longer vines, thicker girth and more side-vines while those in “year I” had more leaves, more male/female flowers, longer and thicker fruit sizes and heavier fruit yield. Intercropping with celosia at P1 produced plants with thicker girth and more leaves, plants at P1 - P3 had more side-vines while all intercropped plots had more female flowers, but P1 had thicker fruit girth compared to sole crops. Plants with F3 had longer vine length, more leaves and more number of side-vines, more female flowers, longer fruits, thicker fruit girth and heavier fruit yield, but those with F1 or F3 had thicker girth compared to other rates while those with F2 had better productivity advantage with LER and ATER at >1.0. In conclusion, snake tomato and celosia in crop mixture were best with F2 and F3 respectively, although intercropping retarded growth and yield of the component crops but P1 was comparable with sole.

Investigative Study on Emissions Level and Cost Analysis of Diesel Powered and Solar PV-Diesel Hybrid Systems

In this work, a comparative study on emissions and cost implications of diesel powered and solar photovoltaic-diesel hybrid systems was carried out for three commercial banks. With the aid of HOMER Pro software, meteorological data, energy demand, system component data, capital and operating costs were used for analysis of the two systems. The results showed that in Bank A, the diesel generator alone releases 111,618 kg/yr of Carbon dioxide while the hybrid system releases 41,618 kg/yr of Carbon dioxide. For Bank B the quantity of carbon dioxide emissions released from the diesel generator in Bank B is 53,830 kg/yr, while the carbon dioxide released from the hybrid energy system is 24,082 kg/yr. For Bank C, the diesel generator alone released 177,799 kg/yr of Carbon dioxide and 129,060 kg/yr of carbon dioxide was released from the hybrid system. This suggests that the diesel generator alone releases more emissions when compared with the hybrid system in all the three banks. The Net present cost of energy and levelized cost of energy were used to find out the cost effectiveness of hybrid systems. The results showed that the levelized cost of energy for the generator alone and hybrid system, respectively in Bank A is $0.713 and $0.343. While for Bank B, it is $0.568 and $0.2553. Finally for Bank C, it was $0.731 and $0.556. Therefore, solar-diesel hybrid system has a comparatively low emission and can be considered as a more economical option for electricity generation.

Background Suboptimal neonatal circumcision analgesia causes a significant stress *** is continued search for more effective analgesia for neonatal *** aimed to determine whether lidocaine–prilocaine cream(LPC)prior to dorsal penile nerve block(DPNB)offers better analgesia than DPNB *** A prospective randomized study of 72 neonates undergoing plastibell circumcision was randomized into two groups of 36 *** I received DPNB alone with 4 mg/kg plain *** II had 1 g LPC applied to the phallus 1 hour before *** cortisol levels were measured 30 min preoperatively and 30 min *** rate(HR)and peripheral arterial oxygen saturation(SpO2)were noted at 30 min preoperatively,after DPNB injection,after excising the prepuce,and at 30 min *** primary outcome measure was change in serum cortisol levels,while secondary outcomes were changes in HR and *** Both groups had increased mean serum cortisol levels,decreased mean SpO2 and increased mean HR from *** rise in mean serum cortisol level was significantly lower in group II(8.09±4.53µg/dL)than that in group I(11.42±7.83µg/dL)(p=0.034).Changes in SpO2 and HR were significantly less in group II than that in group I patients(p<0.05),except for HR changes at 30 min after excision of the prepuce(p=0.086).Conclusion These data suggest that neonates who received LPC prior to DPNB experienced significantly less pain from plastibell circumcision than those who had DPNB alone.

Growth Medium and Soil Amendment Influence on Seedling Growth Responses of African Star Apple (Chrysophyllum albidum)

African Star Apple (Chrysophyllum albidum) classified as a forest food treewith economic potentials requires domestication attention for improvedproductivity. A study conducted in Abeokuta, Nigeria in 2017 using oneyear old C. albidum seedlings determined the plant’s growth responseswhen cultivated using different growth medium and soil amendmentmethods. The 3 x 9 factorial experiment was arranged in a CompletelyRandomized Design (CRD) at three replications. Three textural soil types(sandy, loamy and clayey soils) were evaluated using nine soil amendmentmethods (5, 10, 15t/ha poultry manure (PM) and 150, 250 and 500kg/haNPK, and integrated amendment methods using 5t/ha PM+150kg/ha NPKand 10t/ha PM+150kg/ha NPK), and the un-amended plot as control. Theresults showed that plants in loamy and clayey soils had more leaves comparedto those in sandy soil only at 74WAS. C. albidum had most numerousleaves with 150 kg/ha, taller plant and wider canopy with 250 kg/ha, andthicker girth with all NPK rates compared to control, manure rates and integratedfertilizers. The plants with loamy soil had highest CPC, Ash C, FC,starch and sugar. Plants with inorganic fertilizers and integrated fertilizershad higher FW and DW compared to manure rates. The 5 t/ha manure rateand the 250 kg/ha NPK produced plants with high sugar content and werelowest in starch content compared to other applied rates. In conclusion, *** from juvenile to vegetative stage with proper management can begrown on the different soil types while the 150 kg/ha NPK fertilizer rateappeared as optimum for the plant growth.
