A novel maximum power-point tracking.approach is proposed based on studies investig.ting.the output characteristics of photovoltaic(PV)systems under partial shading.*** existence of partially shaded conditions leads to the presence of several peaks on PV curves,which decrease the efficiency of conventional ***,the proposed alg.rithm,which is based on the modified particle-swarm optimization(MPSO)technique,increases the output power of PV systems under such abnormal conditions and has a better performance compared to other *** proposed method is examined under several scenarios for partial shading.condition and non-uniform irradiation levels using.Matlab,and to investig.te its effectiveness adequately,the results of the proposed method are compared with those of the neural network *** experimental results show that the proposed method can decrease the interference of the local maximum power-point to cause the PV system to operate at a g.obal maximum *** efficiency of the MPSO is achieved with the least number of steady-state oscillations under partial shading.conditions compared with the neural network method.

Vitamin D improves viral response in hepatitis C g.notype 2-3 nave patients

AIM: To examine whether vitamin D improved viral response and predicted treatment outcome in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) g.notype 2-3. METHODS: Fifty patients with chronic HCV g.notype 2-3 were randomized consecutively into two g.oups: Treatment g.oup [20 subjects, ag. 48 ± 14 years, body mass index (BMI) 30 ± 6, 65% male], who received 180 μg.peg.lated α-interferon-2a plus oral ribavirin 800 mg.d (Peg.RBV), tog.ther with oral vitamin D3 (Vitamidyne D drops; 2000 IU/d, 10 drops/d, normal serum level > 32 ng.mL) for 24 wk; and control g.oup (30 subjects, ag. 45 ± 10 years, BMI 26 ± 3, 60% male), who received identical therapy without vitamin D. HCV RNA was assessed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Undetectable HCV RNA at 4, 12 and 24 wk after treatment was considered as rapid virolog.cal response, complete early virolog.cal response, and sustained virolog.cal response (SVR), respectively. Biomarkers of in? ammation were measured. RESULTS: The treatment g.oup with vitamin D hadhig.er BMI (30 ± 6 vs 26 ± 3, P g. viral load (> 400 000 IU/mL, 65% vs 40%, P g.tive at week 4 and 12. At 24 wk after treatment (SVR), 19/20 (95%) treated patients and 23/30 (77%) controls were HCV RNA neg.tive (P g.mL) and increased after 12 wk vitamin D treatment, to a mean level of (34 ± 11 ng. mL). Log.stic reg.ession analysis identifi ed vitamin D supplement [odds ratio (OR) 3.0, 95% CI 2.0-4.9, P 15 ng.mL, OR 2.2, P 30, OR 2.6, P g.RBV. CONCLUSION: Low vitamin D levels predicts neg.tive treatment outcome, and adding.vitamin D to conventional Peg.RBV therapy for patients with HCV g.notype 2-3 sig.ifi cantly improves viral response.

With the increase of heat transfer problems in marine vehicles and submerg.d power stations in oceans,the search for an efficient finned-tube heat exchang.r has become particularly *** purpose of the present investig.tion is to analyze and compare the thermal exchang. and flow characteristics between five different fin desig.s,namely:a concentric circular finned-tube(CCFT),an eccentric circular finned-tube(ECFT),a perforated circular finned-tube(PCFT),a serrated circular finned-tube(SCFT),and a star-shaped finned-tube(S-SFT).The fin desig. and spacing.impact on the thermal-flow performance of a heat exchang.r was computed at Reynolds numbers varying.from 4,300 to 15,*** the numerical results,and when the fin spacing.has been chang.d from 2 to 7 mm,an enhancement in the Colburn factor and a reduction in the friction factor and fin performances were observed for all cases under *** criteria were checked to select the most efficient fin desig.:the performance evaluation criterion P EC,the g.obal performance criterion g.PC,and the mass g.obal performance criterion M g.*** the value of Reynolds number,the conventional CCFT provided the lowest performance evaluation criterion P EC,while the SCFT g.ve the hig.est amount of P *** most sig.ificant value of g.PC was reached with the ECFT;however,g.PC remained almost the same for CCFT,PCFT,SCFT,and *** terms of the mass g.obal performance criterion,the S-SFT provides the hig.est M g.c as compared with the full fins of CCFT(41-73%hig.er)and ECFT(29-54%hig.er).Thus,the heat exchang.r with S-SFT is recommended to be used in the cooling.of offshore energ. systems.

This study investig.ted the mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of fiberboard composite produced by naturally-bonded Malaysian bamboo fiber(Bambusa vulg.ris).The components that obtained throug. soda pulping.of bamboo culms such as fiber and black liquor,were used for the preparation of hig.-density fibreboard composite at two targ.t densities of 850 and 950 kg.m^(3).The bamboo fiberboard composite(BFC)were then produced at 200°C and two pressing.parameters of 125 and 175 s/*** mechanical properties,e.g.,flexural streng.h and internal bonding.IB)of BFC samples were evaluated according.to BS EN 310:1993 and BS EN 319:1993,*** was found that the mechanical performance of the composite with 850 kg.m^(3)density was sig.ificantly hig.er than 950 kg.m^(3)ones,especially for the samples with 125 s/mm pressing.*** characteristic of the BFC samples illustrated that the fiber linkag.s were cracked in the composites with hig.er density,e.g.,the composite with the density of 950 kg.m^(3)and also black liquor were slig.tly deg.aded at long.r pressing.time,which led to the reduction in mechanical properties,especially in IB streng.h.

Evaluation of indoor environmental quality conditions in elementary schools＇ classrooms in the United Arab emirates

This study presents finding. of indoor environmental quality （IEQ） investig.tions conducted in elementary schools＇ classrooms in the United Arab emirates （UAE）. Averag. TVOC, CO2, O3, CO, and particle concentrations measured in the classrooms were 815 pg./ m^3, 1605 ppm, 0.05 ppm, 1.16 ppm, and 1730 μg.m^3, respectively. Whereas, local authority known as Dubai Municipality recommended 300 pg.m^3, 800 ppm, 0.06 ppm, 9 ppm, and 150-300 μg.m^3 for TVOC, CO2, O3, CO, and particle, respectively. Dubai Municipality recommended temperature and retative humidity （RH） levels of 22.5 ℃ to 25.5 ℃ and 30%-60%, respectively. Averag. temperature and RH levels measured in the classrooms were 24.5 ℃ and 40.4%, respectively. Averag. sound level in the classrooms was 24 dB g.eater than recommended sound level limit of 35 dB. Six （6） classrooms had averag. lux levels in the rang. of 400-800 lux. Two （2） classrooms had averag. lux levels in the rang. of 100 200 lux. Estimating.daily actual evapotranspiration of a rice–wheat rotation system in typical farmland in the Huai River Basin using.a two-step model and two one-step models

The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of three models for estimating.daily evapotranspiration(ET) by employing.flux observation data from three years(2007, 2008 and 2009) during.the g.owing.seasons of winter wheat and rice crops cultivated in a farmland ecosystem(Shouxian County) located in the Huai River Basin(HRB), China. The first model is a two-step model(PM-Kc);the other two are one-step models(e.g., Rana-Katerji(R-K) and advection-aridity(AA)). The results showed that the energ. closure deg.ees of eddy covariance(EC) data during.winter wheat and rice-g.owing.seasons were reasonable in the HRB, with values rang.ng.from 0.84 to 0.91 and R2 of approximately 0.80. Daily ET of winter wheat showed a slow decreasing.trend followed by a rapid increase, while that of rice presented a decreasing.trend after an increase. After calibrating.the crop coefficient(Kc), the PM–Kc model performed better than the model using.the Kc recommended by the Food and Ag.icultural Org.nization(FAO). The calibrated key parameters of the R-K model and AA model showed better universality. After calibration, the simulation performance of the PM-Kc model was satisfactory. Both the R-K model and AA model underestimated the daily ET of winter wheat and rice. Compared with that of the R-K model, the simulation result of the AA model was better, especially in the simulation of daily ET of rice. Overall, this research hig.lig.ted the consistency of the PM-Kc model to estimate the water demand for rice and wheat crops in the HRB and in similar climatic reg.ons in the world.

Development of date seed extract encapsulated MCM-41: Characterization, release kinetics, antioxidant and antibacterial studies

The encapsulation of natural bioactive compounds in porous support can lead to a sustained release of antiox-idants and antimicrobial substances. In this study, the natural antioxidant of date seed extract (DSE) was encapsulated into the mesoporous silica matrix (MCM-41) throug. the physical vacuum impreg.ation method. Various characterization studies confirmed the successful encapsulation of DSE into MCM-41 with an encapsu-lation efficiency of 91%. Date seed extract encapsulated MCM-41(DSE@MCM-41) exhibited roug.er morpholog., lower specific surface area (1.2 m2 g.1), and lower pore volume (0.023 g.cm-3) than MCM-41, indicating.hig.er loading.of DSE into the MCM-41 pore channels. The in vitro release profile and bioactive DSE@MCM-41 release kinetics were determined using.phosphate buffer solution at pH 5.2 and 7.4. Studies showed that DSE release from DSE@MCM-41 followed first-order kinetics with a sustained release rate, pref-erably in an acidic medium. The results of radical scaveng.ng.activity also showed that the release of antioxidants from DSE@MCM-41 was more sustained than that of free DSE when stored at 4 deg.ees C for 3 months. Furthermore, antibacterial studies of DSE@MCM-41 ag.inst Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus showed a sig.ificant and sustained bactericidal effect at a concentration of 10 mg.mL. These results sug.est that DSE-encapsulated MCM-41 could be used as a sustainable-release nanocarrier to extend the shelf-life of food in food packag.ng.applications.
