Association of serum Antioxidant Enzymes and Nervous Tissue Markers in Hypertensive Patients

Background and Purpose: Hypertension has serious effects on cerebral blood vessels. Oxidative stress seems to be implicated in blood pressure elevation, through increased reactive oxygen species and/or decreased antioxidant capacity. Recently blood markers indicating damage to the central nervous system were reported to be increased in hypertensive patients. However, it is unknown whether antioxidant capacity is related to these changes. This study was designed to explore if the concentration of blood markers for nervous tissue damage was associated to antioxidant capacity in hypertensive patients. Methods: Twenty hypertensive patients and 23 healthy controls were studied. They were paired by age, sex, ethnicity, or risk factors. serum neuron specific enolase (NsE) and s100 calcium binding protein B (s100B) were measured as nervous tissue damage markers, as well as the activity of antioxidant enzymes (catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase and gamma-glutamyltransferase). Results: serum neuronal specific enolase (NsE) and s100 calcium binding protein B (s100B) concentrations determined by immunoassay were significantly increased in patients vs. controls. The activities of antioxidant enzymes measured by spectrophotometry showed that plasmatic catalase and erythrocytic glutathione peroxidase were significantly increased in patients, but erythocytic catalase was decreased. Gamma-glutamyltransferase activity was significantly correlated with s100B in hypertensive patients, while erythrocytic catalase activity was decreased in subjects with higher NsE levels. Conclusion: This preliminary investigation suggested that antioxidant status might be modulated through changes in antioxidant enzymatic activity in hypertensive patients. The association of some of these changes with peripheral markers of damage to the central nervous system could indicate that the increased levels of these proteins in hypertension are partly related to oxidative stress.

Background There is increasing epidemiological evidence supporting the association between onchocerciasis and seizures, reinforcing the concept of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy (OAE). The aim of this paper is to provide an update on the new knowledge about OAE and to propose recommendations to the World Health Organization how to address this public health *** text During the 2nd International Workshop on OAE held on 19-21 september, 2023, in Antwerp, Belgium, participants recognised OAE as a substantial yet neglected public health problem, particularly in areas of sub-saharan Africa where onchocerciasis remains hyperendemic. Evidence from prospective population-based studies suggest that strengthening onchocerciasis elimination efforts leads to a significant reduction of OAE incidence. There is a need to validate an OAE case definition to estimate the burden of disease and identify onchocerciasis-endemic areas requiring intensification of onchocerciasis elimination programmes and integration of epilepsy care. It is expected that raising awareness about OAE will boost the population uptake of ivermectin. The implementation of a community-based epilepsy treatment programme offering free anti-seizure medications (AsMs) has shown high effectiveness in reducing the frequency of seizures and improving the overall quality of life of people with *** To reduce OAE burden, enhanced collaboration between onchocerciasis and mental health programmes at community, national, and international levels is required. Urgent efforts are needed to ensure the uninterrupted provision of free AsMs in onchocerciasis-endemic areas. 孤独感,指受到社会孤立或与他人隔绝的感觉。研究发现,孤独感与消极的情感状况有关,尤其是与年轻人的抑郁症状有关。然而孤独和抑郁症状之间的关联机制尚不清楚。针对这一问题,有研究者提出通过应对策略来调节年轻人孤独感和抑郁症状之间的关系,应对策略是指为应对压力所做出的认知和行为上的努力。因而本研究旨在探究在西班牙大学生群体中应对策略在孤独感与抑郁症状之间的中介作用。本研究中,我们采用应对策略量表(包含积极(engagement)和消极(disengagement)两个维度,每个维度又包括应对问题(problem engagement)和应对情绪(emotion engagement)两个子维度,每个子维度下包括两种应对策略),R-UCLA孤独感量表以及Beck抑郁量表对364名西班牙大学生(275名女性)进行了抽样调查以检验孤独感、不同应对策略和抑郁症状水平。采用多重中介分析,来确定孤独感和抑郁症状之间的关系是否是由积极应对策略(如解决问题)和消极应对策略(如回避问题)起部分中介作用。结果显示1)问题解决和认知重构的间接效应显著,且与孤独感和抑郁症状均呈负相关;2)问题回避,愿望式思考,自我批评的间接效应显著,且与孤独感呈正相关。3)愿望式思考和自我批评与抑郁症状呈正相关,而问题回避与抑郁症状呈负相关。4)社会支持、情绪表达和孤独感呈负相关,情绪抑制和孤独感呈正相关,但三种应对策略均与抑郁症状无显著相关。中介模型表明,孤独感阻碍了以问题为中心的积极应对策略的使用,从而降低了高孤独感的西班牙大学生的问题解决能力,导致他们出现抑郁症状的风险增加。同时这些结果也表明,在西班牙大学生中,孤独感增加了自我批评和愿望式思考这两种应对策略的使用,使得消极应对策略的使用增加,进而增加了出现抑郁症状的风险。综上,本研究探讨了在西班牙大学生群体中,应对策略在孤独感和抑郁症状之间的中介作用。研究结果发现,减少孤独感、改善积极应对策略、避免消极应对策略、提高问题回避技能是西班牙大学生减少抑郁症状的重要措施。

Purpose: Insufficient epidemiological data on the prevalence of chromosomal abnormalities may hamper investments in research and interventions for better prevention and treatment of these major threats to the population in numerous countries. The aim of this literature review is to contribute to the popularization of cytogenetics. Methodology: This literature review is a text which contains, analyzes and organizes several referenced articles in French and English which have been selected from electronic databases. It provides a documentation of various activities and progress that have an interest in the field of cytogenetics. Results: In the context of cytogenetics, it is necessary to establish partnerships to strengthen infrastructures and produce quality results. The setting up of cytogenetic services and incentives for participatory research give space to the community in the production of knowledge and innovation, alongside researchers. It’s important to create biobanks, where samples of substances from the human body are collected for use in research into the causes and mechanisms of many diseases and their treatments. To carry out clinical trials aims at assessing the effectiveness of a therapeutic strategy, as is currently the case with the use of cytogenetic tests (karyotype, FIsH, etc.) as tool of therapeutic decision and prognostic in cancer biology. The monitoring of the ethic of cytogenetic research projects allows protecting rights, security and welfare of subjects. To solve issues of data management and analysis such as the obstacle to the acquisition of tools and the insufficiency in the training of researchers. Furthermore, dissemination of research results will lead to better understanding of research results, greater public engagement in science and greater social respect for research. Dyslipidemia is a disorder where abnormally lipid concentrations circulate in the bloodstream. The disorder is common in type 2 diabetics (T2D) and is linked with T2D comorbidities, particularly cardiovascular disease. Dyslipidemia in T2D is typically characterized by elevated plasma triglyceride and low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels. There is a significant gap in the literature regarding dyslipidemia in rural parts of Africa, where lipid profiles may not be captured through routine surveillance. This study aimed to characterize the prevalence and demo-graphic profile of dyslipidemia in T2D in the rural community of Ganadougou, Mali. We performed a cross-sectional study of 104 subjects with T2D in Ganadougou between November 2021 and March 2022. Demographic and lipid profiles were collected through cross-sectional surveys and serological analyses. The overall prevalence of dyslipidemia in T2D patients was 87.5% (91/104), which did not differ by sex (P = .368). High low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was the most common lipid abnormality (78.9%, [82/104]). Dyslipidemia was associated with age and hypertension status (P = .013 and.036, respectively). High total and high LDL-C parameters were significantly associated with hypertension (P = .029 and .006, respectively). In low-resource settings such as rural Mali, there is a critical need to improve infrastructure for routine dyslipidemia screening to guide its prevention and intervention approaches. The high rates of dyslipidemia observed in Gandadougou, consistent with concomitant increases in cardiovascular diseases in Africa suggest that lipid profile assessments should be incorporated into routine medical care for T2D patients in African rural settings.

美国的拉丁裔人群自杀风险颇高,但目前的自杀研究对象大多是白人群体,针对拉丁裔人群自杀风险的影响因素的研究尚且不足。以往研究证明,抑郁是自杀风险重要的预测因子。拉丁文化中的集体主义思想也显示,当个体被社会孤立后,产生的孤独感会预测其自杀风险。因此,本研究根据社会心理易损模型,同时考虑个体心理和环境变量对自杀风险的预测作用。本研究采用问卷法探究分别抑郁,孤独感,以及两者的交互作用对自杀风险(绝望和自杀行为)的预测作用。研究样本包括156名拉丁裔大学生,使用分层回归的方法,第一层控制年龄和性别,第二层放入抑郁和孤独感,第三层放入两者交互项,因变量是大学生的绝望和自杀行为。分层回归结果表明,抑郁和孤独感都能独立显著预测绝望和自杀行为。同时,抑郁和孤独感对预测自杀风险的交互效应显著,低孤独感可以缓冲抑郁对自杀风险的预测:随着抑郁增强,相比于被社会孤立的个体,没有被孤立的个体的自杀风险的上升速率显著较低。本研究首次探索了拉丁裔人群的抑郁和孤独感对自杀风险的预测作用,表明减少社会心理的受损能减少自杀风险。与以往研究模式一致,抑郁的对自杀的预测力大约是孤独感的两倍。此外,抑郁和孤独感对自杀风险的影响也存在交互作用,减少个体的孤独感能缓冲抑郁对自杀风险的影响。因此,集体主义文化下的拉丁裔群体(甚至文化相似的东亚群体),未来针对自杀的干预,不仅应关注个体的心理抑郁心境,还可以通过加强社会联结减少孤独感,以降低人群的自杀风险。
