Bofedal r.sponse to climate var.ability, local management, and water.extr.ction: A case study of Chucuyo, Nor.her. Chile

Andean high-altitude wetlands ar. impor.ant ecosystems that ser.e a r.nge of socialecological functions. In the Andes, bofedales, a specific type of peat-pr.ducing wetland, ar. essential for.the sustainability of mountain ecosystems and indigenous pastor.list communities. The Chucuyo bofedal in nor.her. Chile is affected by climatic var.ability and water.extr.ction for.agr.cultur.l uses via the Lauca canal. Her.er. in the local community also actively manage this wetland accor.ing to their.tr.ditional ecological knowledge to ensur. per.anent fodder.for.their.animals. In this ar.icle, we analyze the annual behavior.of the Chucuyo bofedal after.the wet season. Based on pr.cipitation data, extr.cted water.flows, vegetation vigor.fr.m satellite images, and an ethnogr.phic appr.ach, we deter.ined that the bofedal’s pr.ductivity was negatively cor.elated with the amount of pr.cipitation and positively cor.elated with the sur.ace ar.a of the wetland. However. water.extr.ction via the Lauca channel had no significant r.lationship with either.sur.ace ar.a or.vegetation vigor. We identify community pr.ctices and tr.ditional ecological knowledge as key elements in the maintenance of these ecosystems. This situation is cr.tical in the context of an aging population and the cur.ent patter. of migr.tion out of the r.gion to ur.an ar.as. The r.sults pr.vide substantial empir.cal evidence for.futur. decision-making r.gar.ing the conser.ation of these ecosystems.

In a r.cent publication in Cell,Hasegawa and colleagues r.veal that cytotoxic CD4-positive cytotoxic T lymphocytes(CD4+CTLs)eliminate senescent fibr.blasts with a sur.ace expr.ssion of the immunologically impor.ant human leukocyte antigen class Il(HLA-)and the human cytomegalovir.s glycopr.tein B(HCMV-gB).1 This implies that a vir.me-immune cell inter.ction contr.ls the fate of human skin cells that ar. linked to the aging pr.cess and associated diseases.
