Sedation practices for routine diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in Nigeria

AIM:To determine the sedation practices and preferences of Nigerian endoscopists for routine diagnostic upper gastrointestinal ***:A structured questionnaire containing questions related to sedation practices and safety procedures was administered to Nigerian gastrointestinal endoscopists at the 2011 annual conference of the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria which was held at Ibadan,June 23-35,***:Of 35 endoscopists who responded,17(48.6%) used sedation for less than 25% of procedures,while 14(40.0%) used sedation for more than 75% of upper gastrointestinal *** majority of respondents(22/35 or 62.9%) had less than 5 years experience in gastrointestinal *** sedative of choice was benzodiazepine alone in the majority of respondents(85.7%).Opioid use(alone or in combination with benzodiazepines) was reported by only 5 respondents(14.3%).None of the respondents had had any experience with ***-anaesthesiologist-directed sedation was practiced by 91.4% of *** of oxygen saturation during sedation was practiced by only 57.1% of *** half of the respondents(18/35 or 51.4%) never used supplemental oxygen for diagnostic upper gastrointestinal ***:Sedation for routine diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in Nigeria is characterized by lack of guidelines,and differs markedly from that in developed countries.

Background: Bacterial vaginosis is a complex pathogenic group of bacteria which can cause a wide range of symptoms in affected women in Obstetric and Gynaecological practice. Its occurrence usually indicates alteration in the normal vaginal flora expected in majority of the women of reproductive age. Amongst the maintenance agents of the vaginal health, lactobacilli occupy a prominent place. Asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis is postulated to be linked to the development of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia by some researchers while some differ in this regard. Objective: To determine the rate of occurrence of asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis and associated factors in women who underwent cervical cytology for cervical cancer screening. Study Design: A cross sectional study involving microscopic examination of cervical smears of eligible clients presenting for routine Pap smear. Setting: The study was carried out in a well woman’s facility established and manned by female medical doctors in Enugu state with the assistance of trained nursing staff. Various female cancers and other communicable and non-communicable disease screening are performed at the centre. The services are available to the general public including various parts of the state and other nearby states. Methods:

Retro-Viral Disease Status of Patients on DOTS Tuberculosis Treatment Strategy in a South-East Nigeria Teaching Hospital

Introduction: Tuberculosis is associated with HIV/AIDS and it has been recognized as one of the most frequent opportunistic infections in persons with HIV. Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death in people with HIV having an adverse effect on HIV progression. Objectives: The objective is to determine the retroviral disease status of patients on the DOTS strategy. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of patients was seen at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital from January 2013 to April 2015. Relevant information was collected from patients’ folders. Statistical analysis was done with the SPSS and results were represented in tables. Results: 171 patients (77%) were HIV negative while 51 (23%) were positive giving an HIV negative/HIV positive ratio of 3.35:1. 97 patients (43.7%) had 6 months duration of treatment. The least was 2 patients (0.9%) that complied with their medication for 7 months. The 61 - 70 years age group accounted for the least number of HIV-positive patients. Conclusion/Recommendations: There is strong tuberculosis/HIV co-infectivity among the studied population. Strategies to reduce the burden of TB/HIV co-infection should be strengthened.
