Sudden openings and gradual closures in canopy cover modulate acclimation, survival, and growth of a shade-tolerant rainforest tree species

Forest disturbances at gap levels are one of the most important events for the regeneration and establishment of intermediate tree species. Abrupt canopy openings expose plants to high light intensity and high evaporative demands that stress shade-acclimated plants. Later, the slow closure of gaps reduces light availability to plants established when the incident irradiation was higher. This work evaluated the morphological and physiological acclimation of Cabralea canjerana (Vell) Mart. regeneration to sudden and to gradual changes in canopy cover. A pot experiment was carried out with plants exposed to a sudden opening. A few days after the light shock, plants rapidly increased photosynthetic rates and decreased leaf water potential. After two months, plants activated physiological responses at leaf and whole plant levels to high light and water stresses, e.g., increased stomatal conductance, stomatal index and reduction of leaf: fine roots ratio and chlorophyll. After seven months, hydraulic conductivity of petioles and the whole leaf increased, and growth was much higher than plants that remained under the canopy. In a field experiment in gaps in the rainforest, plants acclimated to all canopy covers. Seven years after planting, growth was maximum in open environments within the gaps, even if the canopy closed during the first 20 months after planting. In conclusion, if this species is planted to enrich the rainforest, positions within gaps with lower canopy cover should be chosen and gap closure will not affect growth. To manage C. canjerana natural regeneration, the opening of gaps and removal of understory will increase survival and growth without the risk that the stress caused by these sudden openings could lead to the death of seedlings. Combining pot and field experiments helps to understand the autecology of trees with particular ecological interest, and to build sound restoration practices.

In the last years,much work has shown that the most effective repair system of the body is represented by stem cells,which are defined as undifferentiated precursors that own unlimited or prolonged self-renewal ability,which also have the potential to transform themselves into various cell types through *** tissues that form the body contain many different types of somatic cells,along with stem cells that are called‘mesenchymal stem(or stromal)cells’(MSC).In certain circumstances,some of these MSC migrate to injured tissues to replace dead cells or to undergo differentiation to repair *** discovery of MSC has been an important step in regenerative medicine because of their high ***,the finding of a method to isolate MSC from adipose tissue,so called‘adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells’(ASC),which share similar differentiation capabilities and isolation yield that is greater than other MSC,and less bioethical concerns compared to embryonic stem cells,have created self-praised publicity to procure almost any treatment with ***,we review the current techniques for isolation,culture and differentiation of human ASC(hASC),and describe them in *** also compile some advantages of the hASC over other stem cells,and provide some concepts that could help finding strategies to promote their therapeutic efficiency.

The use of flours or phenolic extracts obtained from non-traditional sources or agri-food industry by-products has been a strategy used to formulate new bakery products with characteristics of a functional ***,phenolic compounds present great structural diversity,as well as the ability to interact in a complex way with the macromolecules that constitute the bread ***,the addition of these flours,extracts or pure compounds produces various effects on the microstructure of bread,and several of its sensory *** is mainly due to interactions between phenolic compounds and gluten *** objective of this review is to analyze some of the most recent published works on the addition of phenolic compounds in wheat bread to identify the type of positive and negative effects that have been observed and how they can be related to the physicochemical interactions between phenolic compounds and the macromolecules that constitute the food matrix,mainly *** effect of monomeric and polymeric phenolic compounds on the strength of these interactions and on the properties of dough and bread are discussed.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)and endoscopic ultrasound elastography(EUS-E)simulation lessens the learning curve;however,models lack realism,diminishing *** To standardize the mechanical properties of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)hydrogel for simulating organs and digestive *** PVA hydrogel(Sigma Aldrich,degree of hydrolysis 99%)for simulating EUS/EUS-E lesions was investigated in Unidad de Investigación y Desarrollo Tecnológico at Hospital General de México“*** Liceaga”,Mexico *** evaluated physical,contrast,elasticity and deformation coefficient characteristics in lesions,applying Kappa’s concordance and satisfaction questionnaire(Likert 4-points).RESULTS PVA hydrogel showed stable mechanical *** depended on molecular weight(MW)and concentration(C).PVA bblocks with the greatest density showed lowest tensile strength(r=-0.8,P=0.01).Lesions were EUSgraphically *** and heterogeneous examples were created from PVA blocks or PVA phantoms,exceeding(MW2=146000-186000,C9=15%and C10=20%)with a density under(MW1=85000-124000,C1=7%and C2=9%).We calculated elasticity and deformation parameters of solid(blue)areas,contrasting with the norm(Kappa=0.8;high degree of satisfaction).CONCLUSION PVA hydrogels were appropriate for simulating organs and digestive lesions using EUS/EUS-E,facilitating practice and reducing *** amplified skills,while reducing the learning curve.

Bacteriological Profile in Diabetic Foot Patients

One of the complications carried by diabetes clinical pictures is the so-called diabetic foot, regardless of age, genre, ethnic group, and socio-economic level;limb amputation is usually an inevitable means to an end. The present research work had the purpose to determine microorganism responsible of ulcer infection in diabetic foot on its more frequent occurrence. Diabetic foot is a public health issue for its high incidence and its high sanitary costs. The present work consisted on a descriptive-retrospective research to seventy patients who were attended in a privately-owned hospital in Machala-Ecuador. Type III (according to Wagner scale) was determined as most frequent value. Microorganisms with a higher incidence degree were found to be gram-negative bacteria Escherichia Coli 27 (69.28%) and gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aereus 25 (80%).

Effect of a hydrogymnastics program on the serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein amongst elderly women

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a hydrogymnastics training program on highsensitivity C-reactive protein in elderly women. The subjects were randomly divided into the experimental group who participates in the hydrogymnastics training program and the control group who was not involved in the training and remained sedentary. The serum levels of highsensitivity C-reactive protein were determined by immunoturbidimetry using C-reactive protein (CRP), the training protocol consisted of hydrogymnastics sessions 5 times per week during 12 weeks of intervention, executed in a pool of 1.3 meters divided into three phases: a 10-minute warm-up, 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at 50%-60% of maximum heart rate (monitored by heart rate monitor) and a 10-minute cool down. As a statistical method to compare the results between groups of variables pre and post training, the analysis of variance (ANOVA) mixed 2 × 2 (group × measurement) test was done using SPSS version 17. The founds showed significant changes in the level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and a greater percentage decrease of hs-CRP (Δ%= -37%, p = 0.001) in the experimental group in relation to the control ***, it can be inferred that a hydrogymnastics program is effective in reducing the metabolic rate of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein amongst elderly women.
