Carbocysteine as Adjuvant Therapy in Acute Respiratory Tract Infections in Patients without Underlying Chronic Conditions: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Objective: This study aims to systematically examine the existing evidence regarding the clinical benefits of carbocysteine as an adjunctive treatment in acute bronchopulmonary and otorhinological processes. design: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources: An electronic search was conducted across PubMed, Cochrane Library, ***, and the European Clinical Trial Register, with the search dated to May 2023. Bibliographic references from other literature reviews and meta-analyses were also reviewed. The search was limited to randomized clinical trials published in any language and year. It was completed by cross-checking the references of the located articles. Methods: Inclusion criteria covered studies assessing systemic or inhaled carbocysteine, regardless of dosing regimen. Concomitant medication use was acceptable if balanced between intervention and control groups. Authors independently extracted data, resolving disagreements through consensus. Methodological quality assessment relied on critical reading of each study. Dichotomous variables were analyzed using odds ratio (OR), and a final effect size was calculated. Statistical significance was established when confidence intervals did not cross the neutral value. Heterogeneity was assessed via the X2 test and I2 index. Results: Out of 318 initially identified studies, 4 met inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis for poor general condition yielded an OR of 0.45 in favor of intervention, p = 0.013, with non-significant heterogeneity. Cough events showed a percentage of 15.8% for carbocysteine vs. 27.2% for placebo. On the seventh day, expectoration rates were 18.37% for carbocysteinevs 33.3% for placebo. Conclusions: The observed clinical benefits align with carbocysteine’s mucoactive and muco-regulatory properties, complemented by anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. A novel triple lines lateral-flow assay （LFA） with enhanced sensitivity for the detection of Leishmania infantum DNA in dog blood samples was designed and successfully applied. The enhanced LFA methodology takes advantage of the gold nanoparticle tags （AuNPs） conjugated to polyclonal secondary antibodies, which recognize anti-FITC antibodies. The polyclonal nature of the secondary antibodies allows for multiple binding to primary antibodies, leading to enhanced AuNP plasmonics signal. Furthermore, endogenous control consisting of the amplified dog 18S rRNA gene was introduced to avoid false negatives. Using this strategy, 0.038 spiked Leishmania parasites per DNA amplification reaction （1 parasite/100 μL of DNA sample） were detected. detection limit of LFA was found to be lower than that of the conventional techniques. In summary, our novel LFA design is a universal and simple sensing altemative that can be extended to several other biosensing scenarios.

With increasing life expectancy， neurodegenerative diseases have become one of the leading causes of ill-health in the elderly. Preventive strategies include following healthy diets， such as the Mediterranean diet， which is particularly rich in polyphenols， bioactive compounds with neuroprotective properties. The aim of this study was to assess the association of microbial phenolic metabolites (MPM) with cognition. This cross-sectional analysis was performed with 200 participants of the PREDIMED trial (Barcelona-Clinic recruitment center). A novel method based on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry was used to identify urinary MPM (protocatechuic acid， enterodiol glucuronide， enterolactone glucuronide， urolithin B glucuronide， and vanillic acid glucuronide)， and cognitive function was evaluated with neuropsychological tests. Multivariable-adjusted ordinary least squares regression was used to assess the associations between cognitive function and MPM， and a score was calculated as the weighted sum of MPM. A higher MPM score was associated with better frontal lobe function. Among individual metabolites， vanillic acid glucuronide was correlated with frontal cognitive performance. Participants with higher concentrations of vanillic acid glucuronide and urolithin B glucuronide obtained better scores in the Color Trail Test part 2. A higher score for urinary multi-MPM was associated with better frontal cognitive performance in an older Mediterranean population.

A geometric setting for generally nonconser.ative mechanical systems on fibred manifolds is proposed. Emphasis is put on an explicit formulation of nonholonomic mechanics when an unconstrained lagrangian system moves in a generally non-potential force field depending on time, positions and velocities, and the constraints are nonholonomic, not necessarily linear in velocities. Equations of motion, and the corresponding Harniltonian equations in intrinsic form are given. Regularity conditions are found and a nonholonomic Legendre transformation is proposed, leading to a canonical form of the nonholonomic Hamiltonian equations for nonconser.ative systems.

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in developing countries. In recent years, natural plant-based compounds have been used in the search for drugs to combat numerous diseases, including cancer. In this study, we evaluate the cytotoxic properties of paanfo tiben 1 and paanfo tiben 2, two traditional herbal formulations from Burkina Faso used in the treatment of cancer in Burkina Faso. To this end, the recipes were infused and freeze-dried. The dry extracts obtained were used to determine total phenolics and flavonoids content, assess antioxidant activity using the DPPH, ABTS and FRAP methods, evaluate anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting 15-LOX, COX 1 and 2, and assess cytotoxic activity on Hela cervical cancer and HePG2 liver cancer cell lines using the MTT test. The paanfo tiben 1 recipe showed the highest levels of total phenolics and flavonoids, as well as the best antioxidant activities, with IC50 values of 21.020 ± 0.6 µg/ml and 22.94 ± 0.57 µg/ml for DPPH and ABTS, and 165.15 mM EAA/mg dry extract for FRAP. It also exhibited the best cytotoxic activity with IC50 values of 112.02 ± 0.025 µg/ml on Hela cells and 80.67 ± 6.08 µg/ml on HepG2 cells. On the other hand, paanfo tiben 2 exhibited the best anti-inflammatory activities through inhibition of 15-LOX and COX 1, with inhibition percentages at 100 µg/ml of 32.523% and 24.717 % respectively. These results could justify the traditional use of these two recipes by traditional health practitioners in the treatment of cancer sufferers in Burkina Faso.

Thermal Conditions in Córdoba City, Argentina, during 1960-2010 Period

The present work analyzes daily minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperature series from Córdoba Obser.atory weather station, which is located near the center of the city of Córdoba, Argentina, and from the Pajas Blancas and Pilar obser.atories, in order to have a reference counterpart of regional climate. The air temperature in Córdoba city during 1960-2010 period shows lower/higher frequency of Tmin categories lower/higher than 15°C, with respect to rural thermal conditions. Tmax categories higher/lower than 30°C, in turn, presented higher/lower frequency in the city. While the mean annual Tmin showed a significant positive trend in the entire region in the study period, Tmax presented no significant changes over time. The difference between urban and rural thermal regimes remained uniform throughout the study period, so the process of urbanization does not seem to have changed the Urban heat island status measure from Córdoba Obser.atory, even though the population of the metropolis has doubled. Although nocturnal thermal conditions have changed over the period, particularly in urban areas, there has been no change in the regime of extreme daytime temperatures across the region. The annual mean Tmin increase is not monotonic, but presents a significant positive partial trend until a breakpoint around 1990, and then becomes neutral or negative and loses significance. For the annual mean Tmax, the partial trend slopes are not significant in any case, so the variation of annual mean thermal amplitude is due mainly to the increase of the Tmin, probably associated with increased rainfall in the region.

Gargantulides B and C,two new and highly complex 52-membered glycosylated macrolactones,were isolated from Amycolatopsis *** CA-230715 during an antibacterial screening *** structures of these giant macrolides were elucidated by 2D NMR spectroscopy and shown to be related to gargantulide A,although containing additional β-glucopyranose and/orα-arabinofuranose monosaccharides separately attached to their *** sequencing allowed the identification of a strikingly large 216 kbp biosynthetic gene cluster,among the largest type Ⅰ PKS clusters described so far,and the proposal of a previously unreported biosynthetic pathway for gargantulides *** absolute configurations of gargantulides B and C were assigned based on a combination of NMR and bioinformatics analysis of ketoreductase and enoylreductase domains within the multimodular type Ⅰ *** addition,the absolute stereochemistry of gargantulide A has now been revised and *** B and C display potent antibacterial activity against a set of drug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria and moderate activity against the clinically relevant Gram-negative pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii.

Simple anthropometric measurements to predict dyslipidemias in Mexican school-age children: a cross-sectional study

Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the best predictors of dyslipidemias in Mexican obese children using different anthropometric and body composition measurements. Methods: In an obser.ational, cross-sectional study, 905 children from 5 schools were measured for weight, height, waist and hip circumference, and triceps and subscapular skinfolds. A fasting blood sample was taken from a random sub-sample of 306 children to determine lipid profile. Abnormal total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol to HDL ratio, and LDL to HDL ratio, were determined. Logistic regressions and ROC analysis were carried out to determine the best anthropometric predictors of these risk factors. Results: Prevalence of elevated total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL cholesterol was 14%, 56% and 58%, respectively. In logistic regressions, BMI and triceps skinfold had the highest odds ratios to predict elevated total cholesterol (1.05, 95%CI: 0.97 - 1.14;1.07, 1.01 - 1.13, respectively), triglycerides (1.19, 1.11 - 1.27;1.12, 1.08 - 1.17, respectively), LDL cholesterol (1.11, 1.04 - 1.18;1.09, 1.05 - 1.14, respectively), total cholesterol to HDL ratio (1.06, 1.00-1.14;1.07,1.03-1.12, respectively) and LDL to HDL ratio risk (1.08,1.01-1.15;1.07, 1.03-1.12, respectively). After BMI and triceps skinfold, subscapular skinfold also predicted dyslipidemias, except for low HDL;both skinfolds had a narrower odds ratio confidence interval than BMI. In ROC analysis, subscapular skinfold was the best predictor of elevated triglycerides with an AUC ≥ 0.7. Conclusion: Anthropometric measurements are not strongly associated with dyslipidemias in Mexican children. However, since triceps and subscapular skinfolds were better predictors than other anthropometry measures, they may be a simple way to predict dyslipidemias in Mexican children.
