Spatial Resilience to Wildfires through the Optimal Deployment of Firefighting Resources:impact of Topography on initial Attack Effectiveness

Strongly affected by the escalating impacts of climate change,wildfires have been increasing in frequency and severity around the *** primary aim of this study was the development of specific territorial measures—estimating the optimal locations of firefighting resources—to enhance the spatial resilience to wildfires in the fire-prone region of Chalkidiki Prefecture in northern *** measures focus on the resistance to wildfires and the adaptation of strategies to wildfire management,based on the estimation of burn probability,including the effect of anthropogenic factors on fire *** proposed location schemes of firefighting resources such as vehicles consider both the susceptibility to fire and the influence of the topography on travel simulation,highlighting the impact of road slope on the initial firefighting *** spatial scheme,as well as the number of required firefighting forces is totally differentiated due to slope *** we ignore the topography effect,a minimum number of fire vehicles is required to achieve the maximization of coverage(99.2%of the entire study area)giving priority to the most susceptible regions(that is,employing 18 of 24 available fire vehicles).But when we adopt more realistic conditions that integrate the slope effect with travel time,the model finds an optimal solution that requires more resources(that is,employing all 24 available fire vehicles)to maximize the coverage of the most vulnerable regions within 27 *** process achieves 80%of total *** proposed methodology is characterized by a high degree of flexibility,and provides optimized solutions to decision makers,while considering key factors that greatly affect the effectiveness of the initial firefighting attack.

The study investigates the potential of UAV-based remote sensing technique for monitoring of Norway spruce health condition in the affected forest *** objectives are:(1)to test the applicability of UAV visible an near-infrared(VNiR)and geometrical data based on Z values of point dense cloud(PDC)raster to separate forest species and dead trees in the study area;(2)to explore the relationship between UAV VNiR data and individual spruce health indicators from field sampling;and(3)to explore the possibility of the qualitative classification of spruce health *** based on NDVi and PDC raster was successfully applied for separation of spruce and silver fir,and for identification of dead tree *** between common beech and fir was distinguished by the object-oriented image *** was able to identify the presence of key indicators of spruce health,such as mechanical damage on stems and stem resin exudation linked to honey fungus infestation,while stem damage by peeling was identified at the significance *** results contributed to improving separation of coniferous(spruce and fir)tree species based on VNiR and PDC raster UAV data,and newly demonstrated the potential of NDVi for qualitative classification of spruce *** proposed methodology can be applicable for monitoring of spruce health condition in the local forest sites.

The effect of oil sludge and zinc,present in soil both separately and as a mixture on the physiological and biochemical parameters of Miscanthus×giganteus plant was examined in a pot *** opposite effect of pollutants on the accumulation of plant biomass was established:in comparison with uncontaminated control the oil sludge increased,and Zn reduced the root and shoot *** sludge had an inhibitory effect on the plant photosynthetic apparatus,which intensified in the presence of *** specific antioxidant response of M.×giganteus to the presence of both pollutants was a marked increase in the activity of superoxide dismutase(mostly owing to oil sludge)and glutathione-S-transferase(mostly owing to zinc)in the *** participation of glutathione-S-transferase in the detoxification of both the organic and the inorganic pollutants was *** inhibited the activity of laccase-like oxidase,whereas oil sludge promoted laccase and ascorbate oxi-dase *** finding suggests that these enzymes play a part in the oxidative detox-ification of the organic *** both pollutants used jointly,Zn accumulation in the roots increased 6-fold,leading to increase in the efficiency of soil clean-up from the *** turn,Zn did not significantly affect the soil clean-up from oil *** study shows for the first time the effect of co-contamination of soil with oil sludge and Zn on the phys-iological and biochemical characteristics of the bioenergetic plant M.×*** data obtained are important for understanding the mechanisms of phytoremediation with this plant.

AiM To develop a screening test for celiac disease based on the coating of gold nanoparticles with a peptide sequence derived from gliadin, the protein that triggers celiac ***20 nm gold nanoparticles were first coated with NeutrAvidin. A long chain Polyethylene glycol(PEG) linker containing Maleimide at the Ω-end and Biotin group at the α-end was used to ensure peptide coating to the gold nanoparticles. The maleimide group with the thiol(-SH) side chain reacted with the cysteine amino acid in the peptide sequence and the biotinylated and PEGylated peptide was added to the NeutrAvidin coated gold nanoparticles. The peptide coated gold nanoparticles were then converted into a serological assay. We used the peptide functionalised gold nanoparticle-based assay on thirty patient serum samples in a blinded assessment and compared our results with the previously run serologicaland pathological tests on these *** A stable colloidal suspension of peptide coated gold nanoparticles was obtained without any aggregation. An absorbance peak shift as well as color change was caused by the aggregation of gold nanoparticles following the addition of anti-gliadin antibody to peptide coated nanoparticles at levels associated with celiac disease. The developed assay has been shown to detect anti-gliadin antibody not only in quantitatively spiked samples but also in a small-scale study on real non-hemolytic celiac disease patient's *** The study demonstrates the potential of gold nanoparticlepeptide based approach to be adapted for developing a screening assay for celiac disease diagnosis. The assay could be a part of an exclusion based diagnostic strategy and prove particularly useful for testing high celiac disease risk populations.

After the 2016 New Zealand Kaikoura Earthquake,the absence of information about the state of buildings in Wellington proved to be a source of significant policy *** did not know what damages to expect and therefore how to react,and policies needed to be formulated without a clear quantification of the ***,without detailed knowledge of the existing buildings,it was difficult to assess what the available legal and regulatory tools can achieve and choose among *** describe the creation of a building inventory database for Wellington initiated by the *** database aims to assist the generation of research on the risks,impacts,and viable solutions for reducing future seismic risk in Wellington’s central business district(CBD).The database includes structural,economic,and market information on virtually every significant building in the *** primary purposes are:to collate and provide the best available information about the expected seismic performance of the existing building stock;to assess the impact of possible multiple building failures due to a seismic event;to describe a viable cost-effective path for seismic retrofitting;and to inform the design of a regulatory structure that can facilitate this resilience-building agenda.

This paper investigated the physicochemical properties of allanite, a RE-silicate, by measuring zeta potential in the absence and presence of three different flotation collectors （benzohydroxamic acid, sodium oleate and dodecylamine）. This data was then verified by microflotation experiments and with bubble-particle attachment pictures. The investigated properties of allanite were com- pared to those of quartz, a common gangue mineral in many RE deposits. The results of this work indicated that only dodecylamine was able to achieve a selective separation of allanite and quartz. This was accomplished by lowering the dodecylamine dosage so that only quartz was recovered by microflotation.

Parasites are known to be a key driving force in mate choice and are important for the expression and evolution of ornaments and behavioral traits being ***,there is little experimental evidence on how the parasite’s burden of the choosing individual is integrated into the mate-choice process and how it affects decision-making,especially in relation to parasite infestation of potential ***,the aim of our study was to determine whether female house sparrows Passer domesticus adjust their mate preference according to their own as well as the parasite load of prospective *** do this,we experimentally manipulated female parasite load and determined their mate preferences prior to and after parasite *** manipulated the chronic coccidian parasite burden of females either by initiating the acute infection phase via re-infecting them with coccidian or by temporally reducing the parasite load of *** then measured the effect of this manipulation on mate preference by presenting females with a choice of four stimuli:three males with similar ornaments,but unmanipulated,naturally varying chronic coccidiosis levels,and an unmanipulated control ***,we recorded some males’behavior in relation to their infection status pointing toward an increased or reduced interest in *** found that females preferred highly infested males prior to manipulation,regardless of their own infestation ***,after manipulation,infested females avoided highly infested males probably in response to the deterioration of their health condition by *** study suggests that mate-choice decisions are more complex when they are mediated by *** implications of parasites for evolutionary theories of sexual signaling and mate choice are discussed.
