BAcKGROUND There is limited literature on managing the airway of patients with linear immunoglobulin A(IgA)bullous dermatosis,a rare mucocutaneous disorder that leads to the development of friable *** clinical decision making is necessary when there is a risk of bleeding into the airway,and a multidisciplinary team approach may lead to decreased patient morbidity during these high-risk scenarios,especially when confronted with an unusual cause for *** SUMMARY A 45-year-old African American female presented to our ambulatory surgical center for right corneal transplantation due to corneal perforation after blunt trauma in the setting of cicatricial conjunctivitis and diffuse corneal neovascularization from linear IgA bullous *** diagnosis of IgA dermatosis was recent,and the patient had been lost to *** severity of the disease and extent of airway involvement was unknown at the time of the *** airway bleeding was noticed upon intubation and the otorhinolaryngology team had to be called to the operating *** patient required transfer to the intensive care unit where a multidisciplinary team was involved in her *** patient was extubated on postoperative day *** A multidisciplinary approach to treating this disease is the best course of action before a surgical *** our case,key communication between the surgery,anesthesia,and dermatology teams led to the quick and safe treatment of our patient’s *** surgery should not be considered for these cases unless they are in full remission and there is no mucous membrane involvement.

Nonconservative mechanical systems with nonholonomic constraints

A geometric setting for generally nonconservative mechanical systems on fibred manifolds is proposed. Emphasis is put on an explicit formulation of nonholonomic mechanics when an unconstrained Lagrangian system moves in a generally non-potential force field depending on time, positions and velocities, and the constraints are nonholonomic, not necessarily linear in velocities. Equations of motion, and the corresponding Harniltonian equations in intrinsic form are given. Regularity conditions are found and a nonholonomic Legendre transformation is proposed, leading to a canonical form of the nonholonomic Hamiltonian equations for nonconservative systems.

The European glass lizard,Pseudopus apodus(Pallas,1775),is a large,legless lizard with wide distribution across south-eastern Europe and eastern and central *** date,morphological diversification among populations on a geographically small scale has not yet been reported in this ***,we investigated the morphological variations and corresponding differences in habitat utilization between two populations of *** inhabiting the same biogeographical zone within a relatively close geographic *** hypothesized that minor differences in habitat could induce a significant level of morphological differentiation,thus indicating morphological plasticity in this species on a small geographical *** sampled 164 individuals(92 from the croatian mainland and 72 from the island of cres).Results showed that *** indeed exhibited morphological differences between populations in the same biogeographical zone within a relatively close geographic area,with the cres Island individuals being generally larger than the individuals from the *** ecological characteristics were similar in both populations(e.g.,soil temperature,distance to hiding place),whereas others were distinct(e.g.,air temperature and humidity).In addition,vegetation cover differed between the two sites,with more vegetation present on the mainland than on the ***,the cres Island population showed clear sexual dimorphism,which was absent in the mainland population.

Rare earth oxides in zirconium dioxide:How to turn a wide band gap metal oxide into a visible light active photocatalyst

In the present study, we investigated the effect of cerium and erbium doping of the zirconium dioxide matrix. We synthesized doped samples using hydrothermal process. The amounts of dopant used were 0.5%, 1% and 5% molar(rare earth oxide over zirconium dioxide) respectively. The samples have been studied via X-ray Diffraction measurements for the structural characterization. UV visible diffuse reflectance was used for the optical analysis, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) model for the measurement of the surface area. Finally the samples have been analysed via electron paramagnetic resonance(EPR) for the electronic characterization. Then we tested the new synthetized materials to determine their photocatalytic activity in the reaction of degradation of methylene blue performed under irradiation by diodes(LEDs) emitting exclusively visible light.

Estrogen, estrogen receptors, and hepatocellular carcinoma: Are we there yet?

A protective role of the sex steroid hormone estrogenin hepatocellular carcinoma(Hcc) was suggested a few decades ago according to clinical data showing higher Hcc morbidity and mortality among males. Several recent studies further confirmed the anti-cancer effects of estrogen in the liver. However, it remains to be identified how to exploit estrogen signalling within clinical settings for Hcc treatment. There are several unresolved issues related to the estrogen pathway in liver cells. The main problems include the absence of a clear understanding of which estrogen receptor(ER) isoform is predominantly expressed in normal and malignant liver cells, the ER isoform expression difference between males and females, and which ER isoform should be targeted when designing Hcc therapy. Some of those questions were recently addressed by Iyer and coauthors. The current editorial review critically analyses the study by Iyer et al(WJG, 2017) that investigated the expression of ER subtypes in liver samples collected from patients with a healthy liver, hepatitis c virus cirrhosis, and Hcc. ER presence was evaluated in association with gender, intracellular localization, inflammation marker NF-kB, and proliferation-related effector cyclin D1. The study limitations and advantages are discussed in light of recent advances in the Hcc and estrogen signalling areas.

Introduction:Bats are threatened by agricultural intensification,and although bat ecology in agricultural landscapes is in the focus of current research,the effects of interacting spatiotemporal factors on species-specific bat activity above farmland remain *** aim was to identify spatiotemporal factors and their interactions relevant for the activity of bat species above conventionally managed arable ***:We repeatedly monitored relative bat activity above open arable fields in Germany using acoustic *** used site-related biotic and abiotic factors and landscape characteristics across five spatial scales,their combinations,and interactions to identify those factors which best explain variation in bat ***:Numerous interactions between landscape characteristics and the insect abundance affected bat activity above *** instance,Pipistrellus pipistrellus became more active with increasing insect abundance,but only above fields with a low proportion of woody vegetation cover in the ***,the level of bat activity in summer depended on landscape *** example,the activity of Pipistrellus nathusii was relatively low in summer above fields that were surrounded by vegetation patches with a high degree of edge complexity(e.g.,hedgerow).However,the activity remained at a relatively high level and did not differ between seasons above fields that were surrounded by vegetation patches with a low degree of edge complexity(e.g.,roundly shaped forest patch).conclusions:Our results revealed that landscape characteristics and their interactions with insect abundance affected bat activity above conventionally managed fields and highlighted the opportunistic foraging behavior of *** improve the conditions for bats in agricultural landscapes,we recommend re-establishing landscape heterogeneity to protect aquatic habitats and to increase arthropod availability.

Influence of polyolefin fibers on the strength and deformability properties of road pavement concrete

Influence of the type and quantity of polyolefin fibers on the strength properties(compression strength, tensile strength in bending, strength in uniaxial tension), the deformation properties(elastic modulus, Poisson’s coefficient) and the abrasion resistance of cement concrete with water-to-cement ratio within 0.31 e0.55 were stated in the *** ways of fibers introduction into fresh concrete were investigated. It was shown that the fibers introduction method and procedure of mixing are the ways to improve the fibers uniform distribution in fresh concrete. The increase of the bending tensile strength and the uniaxial tensile strength of concrete with fibers reinforcement in comparison with the reference concrete was observed with the water-to-cement ratio decrease. The increase of uniaxial tensile strength at age of 28 days for concrete with macrofibers in amount of4.5 kg/m^3 was 23% and 29%;for macrofibers in quantity of 3 kg/m^3 was 19% and 26% with water-cement ratio equal to 0.49 and 0.31, respectively. The maximum reduction of abrasion in the range of 7.5%e10% was observed in concrete with water-to-cement ratio within0.44 e0.55 for all investigated types of fibers. The influence of fibers on the concrete abrasion with lower W/c ratio was negligible. The results can contribute to the rational use of modified polyolefin fibers in road pavement concrete.

Performance of low temperature Microbial Fuel cells(MFcs)catalyzed by mixed bacterial consortia

Microbial Fuel cells（MFcs） are a promising technology for treating wastewater in a sustainable manner. In potential applications, low temperatures substantially reduce MFc performance. To better understand the effect of temperature and particularly how bioanodes respond to changes in temperature, we investigated the current generation of mixed-culture and pure-culture MFcs at two low temperatures, 10°c and 5°c. The results implied that the mixed-culture MFc sustainably performed better than the pure-culture（Shewanella） MFc at 10°c, but the electrogenic activity of anodic bacteria was substantially reduced at the lower temperature of 5°c. At 10°c, the maximum output voltage generated with the mixed-culture was 540–560 m V, which was 10%–15% higher than that of Shewanella MFcs. The maximum power density reached 465.3 ± 5.8 m W/m^2 for the mixed-culture at10°c, while only 68.7 ± 3.7 m W/m^2 was achieved with the pure-culture. It was shown that the anodic biofilm of the mixed-culture MFc had a lower overpotential and resistance than the pure-culture MFc. Phylogenetic analysis disclosed the prevalence of Geobacter and Pseudomonas rather than Shewanella in the mixed-culture anodic biofilm, which mitigated the increase of resistance or overpotential at low temperatures.

Effects of Simulated Heat Wave and Ozone on High Fat Diet ApoE Deficient Mice

Objective To discuss the cardiac toxicities of a heat waves and ozone exposure on cardiovascular diseases（cVDs） and explore a possible mechanism. Methods The incidence of ozone exposure combined with heat wave was simulated in the Shanghai Meteorological and Environmental Animal Exposure System（Shanghai-METAS）. A total of 64 Apo E-/-mice, matched by weight, were randomly divided into 8 groups and exposed to heat wave conditions or ozone. The levels of creatine kinase（cK）, D-lactate dehydrogenase（D-LDH）, intercellular adhesion molecule 1（sIcAM-1）, tumor necrosis factor alpha（TNF-α）, nitric oxide（NO）, endothelin-1（ET-1）, D-dimer（D2 D）, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1（PAI-1） and blood lipid in plasma and heat shock protein-60（HSP60）, hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha（HIF-1α）, interleukin-6（IL-6）, c-reactive protein（cRP）, superoxide dismutase（SOD）, and malondialdehyde（MDA） in hearts were measured after exposure. Results The levels of all indicators, except for SOD, increased with the ozone-only exposure. However, cardiac damage was most significant when the heat wave conditions were combined with severe ozone exposure. Moreover, the levels of cK, D-LDH, NO, PAI-1, sIcAM-1, and TNF-α in plasma increased significantly（P 〈 0.05）, and the contents of HSP60, HIF-1α, cRP, and MDA in hearts increased considerably（P 〈 0.05）, but the activity of SOD decreased significantly. In addition, the levels of four blood lipid items remarkably increased（except the level of HDL-c which decreased significantly） with ozone exposure. conclusion A short-term exposure to a heat wave and ozone causes severe toxic effects on the heart. cardiac damage was most significant under combined heat wave and severe ozone exposure simulations.
