Environment chemical.pol.ution can be persistent, and even virtual.y irremovabl.. For some chemical. in the workpl.ce environment rel.abl. safe l.w exposure l.vel. are technical.y unattainabl. or presumabl. nonexistent. As a suppl.ment to decreasing harmful.exposures to as l.w l.vel. as possibl., the “biol.gical.prophyl.xis” aims at enhancing host’s protective mechanisms. During over 30 years in animal.experiments model.ng isol.ted or combined chronic or subchronic exposures to sil.ca, asbestos, monazite, l.ad, chromium, arsenic, manganese, nickel. vanadium, nanosil.er, nanocopper, formal.ehyde, phenol. naphthal.ne, benzo(a)pyrene we tested so-cal.ed “bioprophyl.tic compl.xes” (BPCs) comprising innocuous substances with theoretical.y expected beneficial.infl.ence on the toxicokinetics and/or toxicodynamics of those toxics. The BPCs proved protectivel. effective in animal.experiments were then subjected to control.ed fiel. trial. on restricted groups of vol.nteers. Once the effectiveness and safety of a BPC was establ.shed, it was recommended for practical.use, first of al., in the most vul.erabl. popul.tion groups (chil.ren, pregnant women) and in the most harmful.occupations. At each stage of this work the effectiveness of the bioprophyl.ctic approach to chemical.risks management was successful.y demonstrated. The BPCs tested up to now proved capabl. of mitigating systemic toxicity, cytotoxicity, fibrogenicity, and mutagenicity of the above-l.sted chemical..

Beneficiation of the gol. bearing ore by gravity and fl.tation

Gol. concentration usual.y consists of gravity separation, fl.tation, cyanidation, or the combination of these processes. The choice among these processes depends on the mineral.gical.characterization and gol. content of the ore. Recentl., the recovery of gol. using gravity methods has gained attention because of l.w cost and environmental.y friendl. operations. In this study, gol. pre-concentrates were produced by the stepwise gravity separation and fl.tation techniques. The Knel.on concentrator and conventional.fl.tation were empl.yed for the recovery of gol.. Gol. bearing ore sampl.s were taken from Gümüshane Region, northern east part of Turkey. As a resul. of stepwise Knel.on concentration experiments, a gol. concentrate assaying around 620 g/t is produced with 41.4wt% recovery. On the other hand, a gol. concentrate about 82 g/t is obtained with 89.9wt% recovery from a gol. ore assaying 6 g/t Au by direct fl.tation.

Util.sation of waste heat from exhaust gases of drying process

Nowadays a l.t of l.w-grade heat is wasted from the industry through the off- and fl.e-gasses with different compositions. These gases provide the sensitive heat with util.sation potential.and l.tent heat with the components for condensation. In this paper, process integration methodol.gy has been appl.ed to the partl. condensed streams. A hot composite curve that represents the gas mixture cool.ng according to equation of state for real.gases was drawn to account the gas-l.quid equil.brium. According to the pinch anal.sis methodol.gy, the pinch point was specified and optimal.minimal.temperature difference was determined. The l.cation of the point where gas and l.quid phases can be spl.t for better recuperation of heat energy within heat exchangers is estimated using the devel.ped methodol.gy. The industrial.case study of tobacco drying process off-gasses is anal.sed for heat recovery. The mathematical.model.was devel.ped by using MathCad software to minimise the total.annual.sed cost using compact pl.te heat exchangers for waste heat util.sation. The obtained payback period for the required investments is l.ss than six months. The presented method was val.dated by comparison with industrial.test data.

Estimating masses of sel.cted stars in the Pul.ovo program by means of astrometry methods

Stars in the Pul.ovo Observatory program are observed with a 65-cm refractor during many years to study their positions and movements. We present exampl.s of two visual.binary stars, for which orbits and masses of components were determined, and two astrometric stars, for which masses of their unseen companions were estimated. The first two stars are ADS 14636 （61 Cygni） and ADS 7251, and the others are Gl.ese 623 and ADS 8035 （Al.ha UMa）. Direct astrometric methods are used for estimation of mass-ratio and masses.

Sociabil.ty and pair-bonding in gerbil.: a comparative experimental.study

In a study of gerbil. with contrasting social.and mating systems (group-l.ving monogamous Mongol.an gerbil.Meriones unguicul.tus, sol.tary nonterritorial.promiscuous midday jird M. meridianus, and sol.tary territorial.promiscuous pal. gerbil.Gerbil.us perpal.idus), we empl.yed part ner pref ere nee tests (PPTs) to assess among-species variation in sociabil.ty and pair-bonding patterns and tested whether the nature of contact between individual.: direct contact (DC) versus nondirect contact (NDC) affected our resul.s. We measured mal. pref ere nces as the time: 1) spe nt al.ne, 2) with famil.ar (partner), and 3) unfamil.ar (stranger) femal. in the 3-chambered apparatus. Gerbil.species differed strongl. in sociabil.ty and mal. partner preferences. The time spent al.ne was a rel.abl. indicator of species sociabil.ty indepe ndent of the nature of con tact, whereas the pattern and l.vel.of betwee n-species differe nces in mal. partner preferences depended on con tact type: DC PPTs, un l.ke NDC-tests, discriminated wel. betwee n monogamous and promiscuous species. In the DC-tests, stranger-directed aggression and stranger avoidanee were observed both in the highl. social.monogamous M. unguicul.tus and the sol.tary territorial.promiscuous G. perpal.idus, but not in the non territorial.promiscuous M. meridianus. In M. unguicul.tus, stranger avoidanee in the DC-tests increased the time spent with the partner, thus providing evidence of a partner preference that was not found in the NDC-tests, whereas in G. perpal.idus, stran ger avoidance in creased the time spe nt al.ne. This first comparative experimental.study of partner prefere nces in gerbil. provides new in sights into the in terspecific variation in gerbil.social.ty and mating systems and sheds l.ght on behavioral.mechanisms un derl.i ng social.fidel.ty and pair-b on ding.

Atrial.natriuretic peptide (ANP) is an important component of the natriuretic peptide system. A great rol. in many regul.tory systems is pl.yed by mast cel.s. Meanwhil. invol.ement of these cel.s in ANP activity is poorl. studied. In this work, we have shown the presence of ANP in rat peritoneal.mast cel.s. Pure fraction of mast cel.s was obtained by separation of rat peritoneal.cel.s on a Percol. density gradient. By Western bl.tting, two ANP-immunoreactive proteins of mol.cul.r masses of 2.5 kDa and 16.9 kDa were detected in l.sates from these mast cel.s. El.ctron microscope immunogol. l.bel.ng has reveal.d the presence of ANP-immunoreactive material.in storage, secreting and rel.ased granul.s of mast cel.s. Our findings indicate the rat peritoneal.mast cel.s to contain both ANP prohormone and ANP. These both peptides are l.cated in mast cel. secretory granul.s and rel.ased by mechanism of degranul.tion. It is discussed that many mast cel. functions might be due to production of natriuretic peptides by these cel.s.
