Antibacterial resistance is a source of great concern in the effective prevention and treatment of infections caused by bacteria,making the development of requisite therapeutics a major challenge.N-(Nitrophenyl)cycloamino acids are important compounds in the synthesis of poly-condensed nitrogen-containing heterocycles with marked activities in many biological systems.A series of substituted N-(o-nitrophenyl)cycloamino-2-carboxylic acids 3a–3g were synthesized via the condensation reaction of substituted o-halogenonitrobenzenes with L-proline 2a and D,L-pipecolinic acid 2b,under refluxing alcoholic basic conditions in excellent *** synthesized compounds were characterised by Ft-IR,(1H&13C)NMR,UV-Vis,mass spectroscopy and elemental *** antibacterial activities were evaluated against five Gram-positive and five Gram-negative bacterial strains using the broth micro-dilution *** antibacterial activities of the synthesized compounds were compared with streptomycin and nalidixic acid as standard antibiotic *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)values of compounds 3a–3g revealed good antibacterial activities against the tested *** 3a–3g were more potent than nalidixic acid against Enterococcus faecalis,Mycobacterium smegmatis,Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris and also more potent than streptomycin against Enterobacter cloacae and Staphylococcus *** 3a,3c and 3g displayed the highest antibacterial potency with an MIC value of 15.6μg/mL against ***,*** and ***,*** results indicated that these aryl cycloamino acids with antibacterial activities had potential applications as substitutes for antimicrobial peptide antibiotics,which are not susceptible to bacterial resistance,to solve the problem of drug resistance.

Background:Self‑medication among student nurses is the use of medicines without doctor’s *** practice is a global phenomenon and potential contributor to human resistance to most drugs,associated with different types of health *** the high knowledge on the complication of self‑medication,studies showed that most student nurses still practice self‑***:the aim of this study was to assess the reasons for increase in self‑medication and and find ways on how to curbing the menace among student nurses in the School of Nursing,University of Benin teaching Hospital,Edo State,*** and Methods:A descriptive cross‑sectional survey was conducted with stratified simple random sampling technique to select ninety student nurses from three different levels in the School of Nursing,University of Benin teaching Hospital in Benin City,Edo State.A self‑structured questionnaire with open‑type and Likert‑type scale questions used as instrument to assess the reasons for increase in self‑medication and the possible control *** collected were analyzed using tables,percentages,means,standard deviation,and t‑test for inferential statistics at 0.05 level of significance,through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ***:the result showed the reasons for increase in self‑medication and how to reduce its *** also showed that the gender of the student nurses is statistically related to the reasons why they practice self‑medication(t=6.82,P≤0.001).Conclusion:Self‑medication can be reduced among student nurses by empowering the law enforcement agencies against self‑medication,improving the availability of essential and quality drugs in school clinics,and inclusion of all student nurses in National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS)program,where they can enjoy the benefit of paying only 10%of the treatment charges.

trong>Background:trong> Depression, one of the commonest mental health problems in SCD, has high prevalence rates. While psychological therapies have been found to be beneficial in mild to moderate depression, their use as non-pharmacological methods amongst adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria, is still at its infancy. trong>Objective:trong> to determine the effect of behavioural activation therapy on depression in adolescents living with Sickle Cell Disease attending out-patient clinic at the Lagos State University teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. trong>Method: trong>the study was conducted in Lagos State University teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, between November 2017 to February 2018 (4 months) among adolescents living with SCD and depression attending out-patient clinic. A randomized control trial (RCt) was conducted among participants assigned to treatment (30) versus control (30) group. A manualized behavioral therapy programme developed was delivered to the treatment group. the data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Pair t-test was used to compare the two groups across continuous variables, pre- and post intervention. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine treatment effects controlling for baseline scores. trong>Result: trong>After the intervention, the mean depression score reduced from 22.13 ± 3.08 to 13.02 ± 4.56 while Paediatric quality of life score increase from 62.57 ± 17.85 to 67.90 ± 7.99 in the treatment group (BDI, p the pre- and post-intervention mean depression scores in the control group showed insignificant reduction from 22.23 ± 3.24 to 21.60 ± 2.75 and mean PedsQL from pre-intervention scores of 59.67 ± 12.60 to 56.73 ± 8.94 post intervention (BDI, p = 0.388;PedsQL, p = 0.242). type 2 diabetes mellitus (t2DM) is emerging as a new clinical disorder among children and adolescents. Although there is increasing prevalence of this clinical entity among adolescents worldwide, its diagnosis among Nigerian children and adolescents is still uncommon, hence, the reason many physicians still misdiagnose t2DM in adolescents as type 1 diabetes mellitus for reason of age of onset. Here, we present a 15-year old, overweight, girl who presented with history of polyuria, polydipsia and weight loss;her blood glucose level was 14.3 mmol/l, glycated haemoglobin 12.4% and glycosuria (3+), with no ketonuria or proteinuria. She was initially diagnosed as type 1 diabetes and managed with multiple doses of insulin by the pediatric team until she was later reviewed by the endocrinology unit. the diagnosis was later changed to early-onset t2DM (Youth-onset t2DM) based on a BMI of 29.75 kg/m2, presence of acanthosis nigricans, absence of ketosis, preserved beta-cell function as shown by normal serum C-peptide levels, absence of anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) antibodies and islet cell antibody, and also response to oral anti-diabetic agents while her insulin therapy was discontinued. therefore, a possibility of t2DM should be suspected in childhood and adolescent with diabetes associated with overweight or obesity, relatives with t2DM and features of insulin resistance (IR) like acanthosis nigricans, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hyperandrogenism, or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Calcium and Magnesium Levels Are down Regulated in Nigerian Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Cerebral Palsy

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and Cerebral Palsy (CP) are amongst the leading neurodevelopmental disorders in children worldwide causing diminished quality of life. Unlike CP caused by brain damage affecting muscle tone, movement and motor skills, equivocal report of different genes with varying loci as genetic malformation and genetic modulation by environmental factors have been the focus of attention in the aetiology of ASD. this study investigated levels of toxic metal (Pb) and macro elements (Ca and Mg) in blood of children with ASD and CP in Nigeria. 8 and 18 Children (aged 2 - 12 years) clinically screened for features of ASD and CP respectively by pediatric neurologist using DMS-IV classification along with 15 age-matched neurologically healthy ones as controls were recruited. Plasma levels of Ca, Mg and Pb were determined in the children using Induction Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Results were analyzed using students t-test. the gender difference was not significant in the children (P = 0.216) while developmental milestones’ abnormalities (stable neck, sitting, crawling and walking) was significantly prevalent among CP children relative to ASD and normal children (P= 0.003, 0.003, 0.003 and 0.000 respectively);however, abnormality in talking was common in ASD and CP relative to normal children (P = 0.000). there was significant difference in educational background of ASD and CP parents relative to those of normal children (P = 0.025). Mean plasma calcium and magnesium levels was significantly reduced in children with ASD (7.90 ± 0.17 mg/dl, 2.44 ± 0.07 mg/dl) and CP (7.26 ± 0.31 mg/dl, 2.42 ± 0.08 mg/dl) in comparison to the controls (8.97 ± 0.20 mg/dl and 3.26 ± 0.16 mg/dl);(P tively. Liming and Fertilizer Potentials of Some Underutilized Plant Materials in Southwestern Nigeria

Soil acidification and phosphorus deficiency are a major constraint to crop production in tropical soils. Use of conventional liming materials is associated with some limitations viz： inability to solely improve nitrogen and available phosphorus in soils, loss of soil organic carbon and soil aggregate stability. Liming and fertilizer potentials of leaves from three plant materials （tithonia diversifolia （tL）, Imperata cylindrica （SG） and Gliricidia sepium （GL）） widely growing in Ogbomoso, southwest Nigeria, were tested under incubation condition. Each of the plant material was applied *** rate of 10 t·hm-2 with and without 50% concentration of NPK 15 ： 15 ： 15-urea mix in 500 g acidic soiL Sole lime applied at 1 t·hm-2, sole NPK 15 ： 15 ： 15 applied at 60 kg·hm2 mixed with urea at 60 kg N· hm2 and an unamended soil were compared in completely randomized design in three replicates. the treated soils were incubated for 12 weeks. thereafter, maize seeds were raised in each pot for a period of 3 weeks. Data coUected were subjected to analysis of variance. Regression analysis was used to predict contributions of increased soil pH in plant material treated soils to exchangeable A1, H, dry root weight of maize and available phosphorus. Results indicated that sole plant materials were the order SG〉tL〉GL significantly （P〈0.05） reduced exchangeable acidity compared to unamended and sole NPK. Sole NPK had the highest exchangeable acidity （4.7 cmol·kg-1） compared to unamended soil （3.3 cmol·kg-1） and sole lime （2.7 cmol·kg-1）. Application of sole tithonia diversifolia increased available phosphorus by 214% and 97% compared to unamended and sole NPK treated soils respectively. Sole plant materials increased maize root weight by 33% compared to sole NPK. Increasing soil pH at harvesting in plant material treated soils significantly reduced exchangeable H and A1. the purpose of this study was to identify the drivers of the shift of traditional agro-ecosystems and their implication on catchment resources management of Eastern Arc Catchments of tanzania. Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi water catchments are situated within Eastern Arc Mountains of tanzania. Household questionnaire, key informant interviews and focus group discussion were used for collecting primary data. the findings indicated that most of the participants (85.9% and 90.4% in Lower Mngeta and Upper Zigi catchments respectively) depend on subsistence rain-fed agriculture for their livelihoods. However, there are significant changes in production as a result of land fertility deteriorating and negative climatic changes (seasonal shift). this has become a major challenge for most of the farmers. to cope with agro-ecosystem dynamics, farmers in the study areas use both traditional and modern strategies as illustrated in the results section. While tradition always reported to be inexpensive, some modern agro-ecosystem practices reported to cause siltation, killing of fish and herbal plants, easy rotting of seeds (for maize) and bad aroma (for rice)in spite of having a high rate of return. It was also reported that depletion of traditions and norms of conduct, accelerated by multi-cultural interaction from immigrants, have led to deterioration of traditional agriculture practices. Moreover, arrival of agriculture companies and introduction of spice farming was reported to have caused manpower imbalance, unequal distribution of natural resources and less diversity of indigenous plants. the study concludes that communities are much into economic opportunity derived from agro-ecosystem than stewarding it. the study recommends that the effort restoring catchment ecosystem should come from both traditional and modern strategies so as to harmonize and accommodate environmental, economic and traditional values.

Haematology Parameters of Apparently Healthy Prospective Whole Blood Donors in a Nigerian Hospital Setting

Background: Adequate selection of a prospective whole blood donor protects his health and safety of the recipient. Objectives: the main objective of this study was to determine the haematology parameters of apparently healthy prospective whole blood donors. Participants and Methods: this was a hospital based prospective study carried out from August to October 2020 at the blood transfusion unit of the Lagos State University teaching Hospital (LASUtH), Ikeja, Nigeria. A structured pretested questionnaire was used for data collection. the socio demographic status and the haematology parameters of apparently healthy prospective whole blood donors who tested negative for HIV, hepatitis B and C markers were captured. Obtained data were analysed with the statistical package for the social scientist software version 20. Results: One hundred male (97.1%) and three female (2.9%) apparently healthy prospective whole blood donors were studied. the median age of study subjects was 30 years. Obtained median haematology parameter values were 13 g/dl, 40%, 4.9/nl and 203.9/nl for haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, total white cell and platelet counts respectively. the median values for the mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) of participants were 32.6 g/dl, 27.7 pg and 85.7 fl respectively. Observed prevalence of subnormal haematology parameters for haemoglobin concentration, total white cells, platelets were 12.6%, 25.2%, and 13.6% respectively. Also subnormal values for MCHC, MCH, MCV were 11.7%, 26.2%, and 16.5% respectively among prospective whole blood donors in this study. No higher than normal haematology parameter values were observed. Median values for erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 8.4 mm/hr. Conclusion: A significant percentage of apparently healthy prospective whole blood donors had subnormal haematology parameters values. Obtained normal values in our study are comparable with

Environmental issues linked to climate change and global warming have been at the centre stage of discussion all over the world, considering their magnitude and the broader scope of consequences. these catastrophic effects of greenhouse gases (GHG) such as CO2, CO, water vapour, nitrous oxides, ozone, coupled with other artificially induced chemicals like CFCs have shifted weather patterns across the globe, thereby threatening the environment unpleasantly. However, the effects of climate changes are more pronounced in Nigeria, due to an unprecedented utilization of fossil-based fuels as the main energy source for electricity, transportation, industrial, agricultural, and domestic purposes. As a result, air pollution and land spills by oil led to the destruction of agricultural land and increasing heatwaves were left behind. Consequently, these impacted negatively on the ecosystem by intimidating the environment, counteracting biodiversity, decelerating economy and provoking human comfort, while simultaneously antagonizing socio-economic growth and sustainable developments. Thus, an urgent need for the Nigerian government to redirect from fossil fuels to renewables and intensify the tyle="font-family:"">campaign for afforestation to support green conservation of biodiversity. these are considered plausible measures for remediating the lingering energy failure and ravaging effects
