Effect of Behavioural Therapy on Depression in Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease

Background: Depression, one of the commonest mental health problems in SCD, has high prevalence rates. While psychological therapies have been found to be beneficial in mild to moderate depression, their use as non-pharmacological methods amongst adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Nigeria, is still at its infancy. Objective: To determine the effect of behavioural activation therapy on depression in adolescents living with Sickle Cell Disease attending out-patient clinic at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria. Method: The study was conducted in Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Nigeria, between November 2017 to February 2018 (4 months) among adolescents living with SCD and depression attending out-patient clinic. A randomized control trial (RCT) was conducted among participants assigned to treatment (30) versus control (30) group. A manualized behavioral therapy programme developed was delivered to the treatment group. The data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Pair T-test was used to compare the two groups across continuous variables, pre- and post intervention. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was used to determine treatment effects controlling for baseline scores. Result: After the intervention, the mean depression score reduced from 22.13 ± 3.08 to 13.02 ± 4.56 while Paediatric quality of life score increase from 62.57 ± 17.85 to 67.90 ± 7.99 in the treatment group (BDI, p < 0.001;PedsQL, p = 0.045). However, the pre- and post-intervention mean depression scores in the control group showed insignificant reduction from 22.23 ± 3.24 to 21.60 ± 2.75 and mean PedsQL from pre-intervention scores of 59.67 ± 12.60 to 56.73 ± 8.94 post intervention (BDI, p = 0.388;PedsQL, p = 0.242). CFD evaluation of pressure drop across a 3-D filter housing for industrial gas turbine plants

This paper investigated the flow distribution and total pressure drop across a designed 3-D filter housing integrated with a 3-stage filtration system using computa- tional fluid dynamics （CFD）. The filter housing model was proposed for a heavy-duty industrial gas turbine plant operating at an average ambient temperature of 20℃.The pressure drops across the classes of filters were 652.8 Pa, 2692.2 Pa, 887.8 Pa, 776.2 Pa and 2304.2 Pa for I-GB, GB-GA, GA-FA, FA-HA, and HA-O, respectively. The results obtained indicated an acceptable total pressure drop of 7.2% for the entire filter housing before filter clean-up. Although the CFD simulation result shows that small outlet flow velocity and transonic flows exist at the outlet of the filter housing, the designed filter housing was proved compatible with the studied GT, for inlet flow conditions between 600≤ Wair≤610 kg/s and 60≤Vair≤70 m/s for the air flow rate and velocity, respectively. Furthermore, the designed filter housing could be adopted for the studied GT and locations of Usan and Maiduguri in Nigeria, and other locations with similar environmental conditions.

Effects of Dehulling on Functional and Sensory Properties of Flours From Black Beans (<i>Phaseolus Vulgaris</i>)

The effects of dehulling on the physico-chemical and pasting of, as well as anti-nutritional factors in black bean (Phasoelus vulgaris) flours were investigated. Black bean seeds were dehulled both manually and mechanically and the flours obtained from the dehulled seeds were compared with flour milled from undehulled seeds. The flours obtained were evaluated for proximate composition, physical and pasting properties. Anti-nutritional factors in the flours were also determined. The flours were then used to prepare steamed bean cake (“Moinmoin”) which was evaluated for sensory parameters of appearance, taste, aroma, texture and overall acceptability. Dehulling produced significant effects (p 0.05 and p > 0.01) prepared from dehulled flours, but there was significant difference (p < 0.05) at both levels in most sensory parameters between samples from dehulled seeds and undehulled seeds except for aroma.

End-use energy utilization efficiency of Nigerian residential sector

In this paper, the end-use efficiencies of the different energy carriers and the overall energy efficiency in the Nigerian residential sector （NRS） were estimated using energy and exergy analysis. The energy and exergy flows were considered from 2006 to 2011. The overall energy efficiency ranges from 19.15% in 2006 to 20.19% in 2011 with a mean of （19.96±0.23）% while the overall exergy efficiency ranges from 4.34% in 2006 to 4.40% in 2011 with a mean of （4.31±0.059）%. The energy and exergy efficiency margin was 15.58% with a marginal improvement of 0.07% and 0.02%, respectively when compared with previous results. The contribution of the energy carriers to the total energy and exergy inputs were 1.45% and 1.43% for electricity, 1.95% and 3% for fossil fuel and 96.6% and 95.57% for bio-fuel. The result shows that approximately 65% of the residence use wood and biomass for domestic cooking and heating, and only a fraction of the residence have access to electricity. LPG was found to be the most efficient while kerosene, charcoal, wood and other biomass the least in this order. Electricity utilization exergy efficiency is affected by vapor-compression air conditioning application apart from low potential energy applications. In addition, this paper has suggested alternatives in the end-use application and has demonstrated the relevance of exergy analysis in enhancing sustainable energy policies and management and improved integration techniques.

Techno-economic evaluation of wind energy in southwest Nigeria

In this study, an analysis of the wind energy potential in the southwest geo-political region of Nigeria was conducted. A 37-year （1971-2007） wind speed data set measured at 10m height, obtained from eight meteorological stations within the region was analyzed using a 2-parameter Weibull function. Besides, a techno- economic evaluation of large wind energy conversion systems with power ratings ranging from 0.6 to 2 MW at different hub heights based on the levelized unit cost of electricity was made for the different sites considered. The result showed that electricity cost varied from 0.06997 and 0.11195 S/（kW. h） to 2.86611 and 4.585785/（kW-h） at limit values of turbine specific cost band intervals of 1000 and 1600 S/kW. It was further shown that Lagos, having the highest accumulated power outputs of 430.10kW/a from DeWind D7 at 70 m hub height, is the most preferred for economically usable power generation in terms of the levelized unit cost.

The architecture of the lower parts of submarine canyons on the western Nigerian continental margin

Multi-beam,sub-bottom and multichannel seismic data acquired from the western Nigerian continental margin are analysed and interpreted to examine the architectural characteristics of the lower parts of the submarine canyons on the *** presence of four canyons： Avon,Mahin,Benin,and Escravos,are confirmed from the multi-beam data map and identified as cutting across the shelf and slope areas,with morphological features ranging from axial channels,moderate to high sinuosity indices,scarps,terraces and nickpoints which are interpreted as resulting from erosional and depositional activities within and around the *** Avon Canyon,in particular,is characterised by various branches and sub-branches with complex *** canyons are mostly U-shaped in these lower parts with occasional V-shapes down their *** typical orientation is NE–*** processes are proposed as being a major controlling factor in these *** appear to have been discharged directly into the canyons by rivers during the late Quaternary low sea level which allows river mouths to extend as far as the shelf *** current sediment supply is still primarily sourced from these rivers in the case of the Benin and Escravos Canyons,but indirectly in the case of the Avon and Mahin Canyons where the rivers discharge sediments into the lagoons and the lagoons bring the sediments on to the continental shelf before they are dispersed into the canyon *** canyons that have long been buried underneath the Avon Canyon are identified in the multichannel seismic profile across the head of the Avon Canyon,while a number of normal faults around the walls of the Avon and Mahin Canyons are observed in the selected sub-bottom *** occurrence of these faults,especially in the irregular portions of the canyon walls,suggests that they also have some effect on the canyon *** formation of the canyons is attributed to the exposure of the upper margina

Dermestes maculatus Degeer infestation impact on market loss of dried fish in Kwara State,Nigeria

Dried fish vendors located at three markets in Kwara State,Nigeria were surveyed and Dermestes maculatus Degeer-infested specimens of dried Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus,Heterobranchus bidorsalis and Oreochromis niloticus were analyzed in the *** dried fish species were exposed to *** larvae and adults for 35 days at ambient laboratory conditions that coincided with their developmental cycle after which the level of damages were *** vendor survey showed that the Ipata market had the most dried fish vendors within the age of 20-30 years(46.66%)and that 60%of the fish vendors had,atmost,20 years of *** weight loss in dried fish due to *** infestations(larval,adult)was ***(22.66±1.20g,29.00±3.05g),***(14.33±2.96g,20.00±0.58g),and ***(14.00±1.53g,15.00±1.15g)in decreasing *** suggests that the development of cost-effective methods for pest control in dried fish would greatly reduce market loss of product for dried fish vendors from *** and other pestiferous species,making the dried fish business more profitable in Nigeria.

Complex Sequence of the English Nominal Group

The nominal group is an important aspect of English and other languages and requires specific attention because of its complex structure and sequence. This study examines how sequencing affects users＇ understanding and interpretation of the English nominal group and attempts to prescribe guidelines to the different challenges which the complex ordering of the nominal group poses to users of English as a second language. The findings of the study indicate that the complex ordering of the nominal group has a significant impact on their semantic effects in any discourse, and many of the difficulties users of English as a second language are faced with have to do with lack of adequate understanding of the structure and usage of the nominal group. Some of these problems can be addressed through a comprehensive study and examination of linguists＇ explanation of the nominal group and practical application of their guidelines. A functional approach to the study of the group will help second language learners of English to have a better understanding of its structure

Does Working Capital Cause Profitability？ --The Nigerian Experience

The paper investigates the long run relationship and causality issues between working capital and profitability in 66 firms in Nigeria by using the panel cointegration method for the period 1999-2007. The empirical results show that there is long run steady-state relationship between working capital and profitability. However, the short run causal relationship runs from working capital to profitability suggesting that inefficient working capital management may harm profitability.
