The treatment and management of diab.tes mellitus has b.en a challenge to achieve a total cure using conventional drugs. Hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects of b.tter kola (Garcinia kola) seed extract on alloxan-induced diab.tic rats were studied as a local product. Alb.no rats weighing ab.ut 200 g were investigated in groups using 200 - 800 mg/kg weight of b.tter kola seed extract and the sample examined for glucose and lipid profiles using enzymatic methods and statistically analyzed using statistical package for social science (SPSS) windows, version 20.0. The results were expressed as the Mean ± SD. The results for the serum glucose and low density lipoprotein cholesterols (LDL-C) concentrations of untreated diab.tic rats, and treated rats showed a significant (P b.tic rats, and treated rats showed increase in concentration which was not significant (P > 0.05) from 200 - 800 mg/kg weight when compared with the controls. High density lipoproteins (HDL-C) concentrations for untreated diab.tic rats, and treated rats showed increase in concentration which was significant (P b.tter kola (Garcinia kola) seed extract.

Ethylene is an important feedstock for various industrial processes, particularly in the polymer industry. Unfortunately, during naphtha cracking to produce ethylene, there are instances of acetylene presence in the product stream, which poisons the Ziegler–Natta polymerization catalysts. Thus, appropriate process modification, optimization, and in particular, catalyst design are essential to ensure the production of highly pure ethylene that is suitab.e as a feedstock in polymerization reactions. Accordingly, carefully selected process parameters and the application of various catalyst systems have b.en optimized for this purpose. This review provides a holistic view of the recent reports on the selective hydrogenation of acetylene. Previously pub.ished reviews were limited to Pd catalysts. However, effective new metal and non-metal catalysts have b.en explored for selective acetylene hydrogenation. Updates on this recent progress and more comprehensive computational studies that are now availab.e for the reaction are describ.d herein. In addition to the favored Pd catalysts, other catalyst systems including mono, b.metallic, trimetallic, and ionic catalysts are presented. The specific role(s) that each process parameter plays to achieve high acetylene conversion and ethylene selectivity is discussed. Attempts have b.en made to elucidate the possib.e catalyst deactivation mechanisms involved in the reaction. Extensive reports suggest that acetylene adsorption occurs through an active single-site mechanism rather than via dual active sites. An increase in the reaction temperature affords high acetylene conversion and ethylene selectivity to ob.ain reactant streams free of ethylene. Conflicting findings to this trend have reported the presence of ethylene in the feed stream. This review will serve as a useful resource of condensed information for researchers in the field of acetylene-selective hydrogenation.

Introduction: Hyponatremia is the commonest electrolyte derangement seen in medical and surgical wards and in high dependency treatment units. It is associated with prolonged hospital stay, high economic b.rden and increased morb.dity and mortality. Hyponatremia is well reported in medical and surgical conditions b.t literature is scanty concerning its relationship with treatment outcome in patients managed in high dependency heart and vascular surgical centers. Ob.ectives: To determine the prevalence, determinants, clinical correlates and outcome of pre-operative hyponatremia. Methods: Retrospective study involving patients that had surgery (cardiac and vascular) b.tween January 2015 and Decemb.r 2019. Data were ob.ained from patients’ case files, perioperative and intensive unit charts. All participants with preoperative hyponatremia had their serum sodium corrected to ≥135 mmol b.fore surgical incision and those with hypernatremia had their sodium corrected to b.ratory findings were entered. Statistical analysis was done using student’s t-test and Chi square. Results: Of the 305 participants (186 males and 119 females), pre-operative hyponatremia was found in 30.8% and normonatremia in 59.7%. Pre-operative hyponatremia was more common in advance age, overweight, those presenting for open heart and other major surgeries and those with b.ckground chronic heart failure and chronic liver disease. Participants with pre-operative hyponatremia had shortened and also prolonged hospital stay and higher risk of death than with normonatremia. Conclusion: Pre-operative hyponatremia is common in high dependency surgical unit particularly in the elderly, those with comorb.dities and those presenting for major heart surgeries. Realization of negative stiffness （NS） in damping low frequency acoustic and mechanical vib.ation is relevant in engineering applications. In this work, assemb.age of two repelling magnets was used to produce negative magnetic spring （NMS）. A mass-spring system with NMS is experimented where the free and forced vib.ations of the system are examined. The anti-phase movement is ob.erved due to the presence of proposed NMS, confirming the analytical solution. We further showed the dynamics of the system containing NS spring could also b. derived from Hamilton＇s principle.
