Floods are among the most frequently occurring natural hazards in Malawi,often with public health *** mixed methods study assessed the capacity for and implementation status of the disaster risk management(DRM)strategy for the health sector in Malawi,using flooding in the Nsanje District as a *** were collected using desk review and a workshop methodology involving key officials from government ministries,national and international development partners,and the *** results show that Malawi had recently strengthened its DRM institutional frameworks,with a pronounced policy shift from reactive to proactive management of *** sector personnel and structures were key contributors in the design and implementation of DRM activities at all *** partners played a significant role in strengthening DRM coordination and implementation *** of funding and the limited availability,and often fragmented nature,of vulnerability and risk assessment data were identified as key *** human resource capacity and inadequate planning processes at district level impeded full implementation of DRM *** findings call for community-level interventions for improved coordination,planning,and human resource capacity to strengthen community disaster resilience and improve public *** approach used in this study can serve as a model framework for other districts in Malawi,as well as in other low-and middle-income countries in the context of Sendai Framework implementation.

Early Treatment Outcome of Humeral Shaft Fracture Non-Union in Adults: Comparative Study of Plating versus Interlocking Nailing

Background: Fractures of humeral shaft in adults are common injuries. Humeral shafts non-union either from late presentation after initial treatment by traditional bone setters or failed non-operative orthodox care is a major problem in this part of the world. This non-union is a major treatment challenge with increased cost of care and morbidity in this part of the world. Humeral shaft non-union can be treated with locked intra-medullary nailing (LIMN) or dynamic compression plating (DCP). Study on comparison of these methods of fixation in this part of the world is scarce in literature search, hence the reason for this study. Objective: The objectives of this study are: (1) to compare early clinical outcome following fixation of humeral shaft fracture nonunion with DCP versus LIMN;(2) to compare the time of radiologic fracture union of DCP with LIMN;(3) to compare complications following fixation of humeral shaft fracture nonunion with DCP versus LIMN. Patients and Methods: This was a randomized control study done for 2 years in which fifty adult patients with humeral shaft non-union were recruited. The patients were grouped into 2 (P = DCP & N = LIMN). Forty five of the patients completed the follow up periods of the study and then analyzed. The P group had ORIF with DCP while the N group had ORIF with LIMN. Both groups had grafting with cancellous bones. Each patient was followed up for a period of 6 months at the time which radiographic union is expected. Any patient without clinical and/or radiographic evidence of union after six months of surgery was diagnosed as having recurrent non-union. The data generated was analyzed using SPSS Version 23. The results were presented in charts and tables. The paired t-test was used while considering p value Result: Forty five patients completed follow up. Water-based polymer films can be readily deposited onto a wide range of metallic materials as an environmentally friendly coating through the demulsification-induced fast solidification(DIFS)***,there is still a lack of in-depth understanding of the demulsification process of the water-based emulsions and their deposition ***,we demonstrate that the build-up process of the commercial water-based micron-scale waterborne polyurethane,polyvinyl acetate,polyurethane acrylate,and natural rubber polymer films is affected by the collective effect of electric field and ion diffusion exerted by anode-cathode electrode pairs,applied voltage,conduction time,electrode distance,and emulsion species.A structural investigation of as-prepared polymer films allows us to propose two new structure build-up *** a flat film deposition,isolated islands are formed first and grow on the substrate surface,and eventually,their mutual coalescence forms the final ***,for a convex layer formation,the layer is first formed in the middle of the substrate and then grows toward the sides of the convex structure of the *** results presented in this work expand the understanding of the mechanism of the DIFS process and may provide some new insights into structure-oriented multifunctional material design.

Utilisation of smoking cessation aids among South African adult smokers:findings from a national survey of 18208 South African adults

Background:This research focuses on herbal medicine,an ancient healthcare practice,exploring the antibacterial attributes of fresh and dried leaf extracts from Momordica charantia(commonly known as Bitter melon)and Vernonia amygdalina(Bitter leaf).The study specifically investigates their effects on different bacterial strains associated with ***:Four enteric bacterial isolates-Klebsiella pneumoniae,Salmonella typhi,Escherichia coli,and Proteus mirabilis-were obtained from the Medical Laboratory Unit at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilishan-Remo,Ogun *** screening and antibacterial testing were conducted using standard biochemical techniques and the Punch-hole agar diffusion method,***:Qualitative phytochemical screening of the plant extracts revealed the presence of flavonoids,glycosides,and saponin in both plants,excluding *** were identified only in Vernonia *** these phytochemicals,neither plant displayed inhibitory effects on the tested bacterial isolates(Escherichia coli,Proteus mirabilis,Klebsiella pneumoniae,and Salmonella typhi)when tested individually or in ***,combining the fresh and dried leaf extracts of Momordica charantia and Vernonia amygdalina with a standard drug resulted in smaller mean zone diameters of inhibition(Escherichia coli range:14 mm–16 mm,Proteus mirabilis range:31 mm–35 mm,Klebsiella pneumoniae range:13 mm–22 mm,and Salmonella typhi range:35 mm–38 mm)compared to the drug tested alone(16 mm–45 mm).Conclusion:Despite previous indications of antibacterial properties in various extracts of *** and *** leaves,our study presents contradictory results,prompting the need for further investigation despite the presence of significant phytochemicals.

30,000 bpd Capacity Modified Modular Refinery Operations in Nigeria

The study investigated and classified twenty Nigerian crude oil types based on their products recovery volume at true boiling point temperature of 370˚C using crude oil assay analysis data into Group A (crude oil with recovery volume above 80%), Group B (crude oil with recovery volume between 70% and 79%) and Group C (crude oil with recovery volume below 70%) respectively. Thus, twenty Nigerian crude oil types were simulated in a modified modular refinery (modified topping plant) of 30,000 bpd capacity and twenty-nine (29) column trays number using Aspen Hysys software. Furthermore, the residues from the conventional modular refinery were processed as feedstock or precursor into the hydrocracker reactor attached to the stripping section of the modified modular refinery to yield more valuable products of liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha, diesel and bottom (residue). The simulation results of the modified modular refinery were compared with conventional modular refinery in terms of their residual yield percentage as Nigerian Brass 2012 of API 40.62, recovery volume 88.78%, yielded residue of 11.22% and 1.29% for conventional modular and modified modular refineries respectively while Okoro 2012 of least API 23.54, recovery volume 57.84%, yielded residue of 42.16% and 4.92% for conventional modular and modified modular refineries respectively. Thus, the residual or bottom product issue associated with operational process of conventional modular refinery operations in Nigeria due to inefficient or non-operational conventional major refinery in Nigeria has been resolved to minimum or least amount with the operational process of modified modular refinery operations in Nigeria.

Molecular Diversity of Fusarium oxysporum and Geotrichum candidum Isolated from Two Tomato Varieties Commonly Consumed in Some Southwestern Town in Nigeria

Fusarium oxysporum and Geotrichum candidum, which are among important pathogens of Solanum lycopersicum L. (Tomato), are sometimes misidentified during morphological misidentification. The study was carried out to evaluate molecular diversity of F. oxysporum and G. candidum isolated from two tomato varieties obtained from Akure, Ilorin and Ibadan, Nigeria. The tomato samples were collected and brought back to the laboratory for fungal isolation. Isolation of the pathogens were done following standard procedures. DNA extraction from pure cultures of the pathogens was done at the Centre Laboratory of University of Ibadan. Genetic relationships among the organisms were also estimated by constructing a Dendrogram through UPGMA using the Mega6 Software and genetic distance was computed also using the Mega6 Software. Five strains of F. oxysporum and seven strains of G. candidum were identified. Percentage similarity of the pathogens with those in GenBank was 99.17% - 100.00% for F. oxysporum and 98.48% - 100.00% for G. candidum. The T-01 marker showed the lowest major allele frequency of 0.0833, while T-10 marker has the highest value for major allele frequency of 0.6667 and an average value of 0.3958. Evolutionary relationship showed that the two strains of G. candidum (MN650247 and MN650250) were similar. The three strains of F. oxysporum (MN650246 and MN650248, MN650245 and MN650253) were also similar. Genetic distances among pairs of the fungal strains ranged from 0.12 to 6.30 in pairwise fashion, with an average of 1.32. Evolutionary relationship or closeness among strains of a fungal species can thus be said not to depend on location.

Optimization of the Striping Section of Modular Refinery Operations in Nigeria

Nigerian crude oil type Okoro 2012 was applied in this study owing to its low API value 23.54 and high residual percentage value of 42.16% from conventional modular refinery operations in Nigeria. The residue acted as a precursor or feedstock to the hydrocracker reactor of the modified modular refinery operation, which is an hydrogenation catalytic process at operating conditions of 380°C and 183 bar respectively and the hydrogen gas applied is produced via steam-methane reforming since the operational feedstocks are available as methane is the first gaseous product from the modified modular refinery process. Thus, more valuable products such as liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha and diesel were produced from modified modular refinery thereby resolving the residue or bottom product issue associated with conventional modular refinery operation in Nigeria. Models were developed from the first principle through the application of the principle of conservation of mass to predict the performance of the hydrocracker reactor and the developed models were sets of ordinary differential equations, which were solved using MatLab ODE45 solver and validated using simulation data of Aspen Hysys software for the hydrocracker reactor. The results gave a minimum percentage absolute error (deviation) between model predictions and Aspen Hysys results of 4.45%, 5.0% and 2.02% for liquefied petroleum gas, naphtha and diesel products respectively. Hence, the model developed predicted the output performance of the hydrocracker reactor very closely and was applied in studying or simulation of the effects of catalyst effectiveness factor on the overall performance of the hydrocracker reactor.
