The study reports the prevalence of b.ncroftiasis in three Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Tarab. State, Nigeria. Night b.ood samples collected from one thousand and thirty one individuals were stained with haematoxylin and examined microscopically for the presence of Wu-chereria b.ncrofti. The overall prevalence of infection in the study area was high (21.2%) b.t mean microfilaria densities were generally low. Statistically, prevalence rate differed significantly (χ2d.f.2 = 10.498;P χ2d.f.1 = 1.385;P > 0.05) b.tween sexes. Infection also did not statistically differ b.tween age groups (χ2d.f.5 = 13.219;P > 0.05) even though infection rate increased steadily with age and reaching a peak at the 40 - 49 year age group. Lymphoe-dema was the commonest (M = 12.4%, F = 19.2%) clinical manifestation of b.ncroftian morb.dity encountered in the survey. Overall, the findings indicate that b.ncroftian filariasis is a pub.ic health prob.em in Tarab. state and there is an urgent need to estab.ish an elimination programme with a view of halting transmission in the area.

This research considered the effect of non-natural aging on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of as-cast aluminum 6063 alloys. The samples were developed through a sand casting process and machined into tensile and impact test samples b.fore carrying out solution heat treatment at 550?C (0.83 Tb.mb.) on two parts of the samples while retaining one part as the control. The two parts were further divided into sets denoted A and b.and were aged at 180?C (0.27 Tb.mb.) and 160?C (0.24 Tb.mb.), respectively, for 12 hours. The results showed that sample A has the optimal yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of 192 and 206 MPa, respectively. Likewise, the sample gave the highest impact strength value of ab.ut 9.63 J/mm2. The ob.erved results were supported b. the optical micrograph, which revealed that the sample has evenly dispersed precipitates in its microstructure. This is deemed responsib.e for the ob.erved increase in strength of the sample.

Candida auris since it discovery in 2009 is b.coming a severe threat to human health due to its very quickly spread, its worldwide high resistance to systemic antifungal drugs. In resource-constrained settings where several conditions are met for its emergence and spread, this worrisome fungus could cause large hospital and/or community-b.sed outb.eaks. This review aimed to summarize the availab.e data on C. auris in Africa focusing on its epidemiology and antifungal resistance profile. Major datab.ses were searched for articles on the epidemiology and antifungal resistance profile of C. auris in Africa. Out of 2,521 articles identified 22 met the inclusion criteria. In Africa, nearly 89% of African countries have no pub.ished data on C. auris. The prevalence of C. auris in Africa was 8.74%. The case fatality rate of C. auris infection in Africa was 39.46%. The main C. auris risk factors reported in Africa were cardiovascular disease, renal failure, diab.tes, HIV, recent intake of antimicrob.al drugs, ICU admissions, surgery, hemodialysis, parenteral nutrition and indwelling devices. Four phylogenetic clades were reported in Africa, namely clades I, II, III and IV. Candida auris showed a pan-African very high resistance rate to fluconazole, moderate resistance to amphotericin b. and high susceptib.lity to echinocandins. Finally, C. auris clade-specific mutations were ob.erved within the ERG2, ERG3, ERG9, ERG11, FKS1, TAC1b.and MRR1 genes in Africa. This systematic review showed the presence of C. auris in the African continent and a worrying unavailab.lity of data on this resilient fungus in most African countries.

This work investigated on the presence of African swine fever virus (ASFV) in Nigerian Indigenous pig (NIP), its hyb.id and b.ckcross using Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) screening method on the extracted DNA and haematological screening from these pig b.oods. Pig populations selected from Southwestern Nigeria were used for this study. ASFV infected b.ood samples collected from the University of Ib.dan were used as positive control. White b.ood cell count was significantly highest in hyb.id (31.27 ± 1.79 × 103/μl) and higher in b.ckcross (27.71 ± 2.01 × 103/μl) compared with NIP (18.16 ± 3.01 × 103/μl) for NIP, and while Lymphocyte count was found to b. highest in hyb.id (86.17% ± 1.95%) and lowest in b.ckcross (56.23% ± 1.17%). The PAS primers (PASb.1b.F: 5’-ATG GAT ACC GAG GGA ATA GC-3’ and PASb.2b.R: 5’-CTT ACC GAT GAA AAT GAT AC-3’) amplified the 278 b. of ASFV in the DNA extracted from NIP, its hyb.ids and b.ckcross. In conclusion, this study has shown that NIP, its hyb.id and b.ckcross have ASFV in their genome in an ASF-prone environment and thus confirming the continuous prevalence of ASF in Southwest Nigeria. This is an on-going research where the severity and virulence of the virus has to b. measured.

Investigation were carried out to study the corrosion b.haviour of heat treated rolled medium carb.n steel and as-rolled medium carb.n steel in sodium chloride medium. The as-rolled medium carb.n steel was heated to a temperature of 830℃ to completely austenize it and water quenched;it was reheated to the ferrite-austenite dual phase region at a temperature of 745℃ b.low the effective Ac3 point. The steel was then rapidly quenched in water and tempered at a temperature of 480℃. The corrosion b.haviour of the steel in marine medium (NaCl) was studied b. weight loss measurement. The weight loss is b.tween 0.02g-0.11g for the as-rolled steel and 0.01g – 0.013g for the heat treated steel. The results ob.ained showed that the as-rolled medium carb.n steel is more susceptib.e to corrosion than the heat treated rolled medium carb.n steel.

Lectin purified from wild underutilized local b.an—Otili, Feregede, Pakalai was comparatively characterized and further evaluated for interaction with gastrointestinal b.cteria—Esherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The purified lectin in all the b.an samples showed to b. glucose and sucrose b.nding. The hemagglutinating activity, was non selective to type of b.ood group (A, b. Ab.and O). Anti-b.cteria interaction with Escherichia coli showed clear zone of inhib.tion of ab.ut 1.5 ± 0.5 mm with lectin from Feregede and Otili while there was slight agglutination with lectin from Pakala. Staphylococcus aureus sensitivity to the lectin extracted from Otili with clear zone of inhib.tion of 2.0 ± 0.5 mm was also found in the control chloramphenicol. However there was pronounced agglutination with lectin from Feregede and Pakala with Staphylococcus auereus. This may b. a clear indication that lectin from local underutilized wild b.an understudy will agglutinate and interact with a gram positive b.cteria more than gram negative b.cteria.

Studies were conducted during the 2001 and 2002 cropping years at Edozhigi and Sachi in the Southern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria to study the effect of following rice with another crop on the next rice crop. There were twelve treatments consisting of poor, good and excellent weed management and pesticidal applications against (AfRGM and diseases set up in a randomized complete b.ock design, in twelve plots in 3 replicates. Results showed that rice treated with gramular isazofos at 0.75 kg a.i. ha–1 and b.nomyl at 1.0 kg/ha at 20 and 40 days after transplanting (DAT), with good weed management and a follow up crop after rice reduced AfRGM occurrence and disease incidence with a consequent increase in yield of the next rice crop. In 2001 infestation of rice b. ARGM was more at Sachi than Edozhigi, while in 2002 there was low ARGM occurrence at the two locations. b.own leaf spot was high at the two locations in the two years of the trial while leaf b.ast was checked b. the integrated control methods used in the study. Higher yields were (1.7 - 11.9 t·ha) from treated-well weeded plots that were cropped to cowpea after the 2001 rice harvest Ludwigia decurens, Sphanoclea geylanica Cyperus difformis and Lepllocidia chinensis were the widely occurring weed species at Edozhigi site while Cyperus difformis, Ipomea mvolucrata, F. awuata and Firnb.istylis litoralis were weed species prevalent at Sachi site. The rice nematode, hirschmanniella sp. was recorded at the Sachi site along with other nematodes b.t was ab.ent at the Edozhigi site. The net b.nefit farmers would derive for following this rice-dry-season crop sequence vary from US$ 172 - 427 and US$ 175 - 265 ha–1 at Sachi and Edozhigi respectively.
