　　The systemic response to tissue injury, regardless of cause is characterized by a cytokine-mediated alteration in the hepatic synthesis of a number of different plasma proteins,known collectively as 'acute phase reactants'. These proteins include C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A protein, alphal glycoprotein, ceruloplasmin, alpha macroglobulins, complement components (C1-C4, factor B, C9, C11), alpha1antitrypsin, alpha1 antichymotrypsin, fibrinogen, prothrombin,factor Ⅷ, plasminogen, haptoglobin, ferritin, immunoglobulins and lipoproteins. Objective: Several pathologies arise from the inappropriate opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition(mPT) pore. In this regard, inhibition of mPT pore represents a cytoprotective approach to preserve mitochondrial function for treatment of diseases characterized by excessive tissue wastage such as diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study, therefore, was to study the effects of fractions of Ficus mucoso, a medicinal plant used in the traditional treatment of diabetes, on mPT pore in normal and streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rat ***: Different solvent fractions of the crude methanol extract of F. mucoso were obtained by vacuum liquid chromatography and were tested on the mPT pore. Of all the fractions tested, methanol fraction of F. mucoso(MFFM) was the most potent and was used for in vivo studies. Diabetes mellitus was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of 60 mg/kg STZ, while treatment lasted for 14 d. In vivo, 30 male Wistar rats were divided into five groups: A, normo-glycemic control(distilled water);B, STZ(65 mg/kg;diabetic control);C, STZ + MFFM(25 mg/kg);D, STZ + MFFM(50 mg/kg);E, STZ + glibenclamide(5 mg/kg). The mPT, mitochondrial ATPase activity, lipid peroxidation and cytochrome c release were assessed spectrophotometrically while blood glucose levels were monitored using ***: In vitro, the solvent fractions of F. mucoso, at all concentrations tested, had no effect on the mPT pore, in the absence of calcium, with no significant release of cytochrome c. Interestingly, calciumdependent pore opening was inhibited by all solvent fractions of F. mucoso, with the MFFM having the highest inhibitory effect of 83% at 3 mg/mL. Induction of opening of the mPT pore, significant(P < 0.001) enhancement of mitochondrial ATPase activity and elevated malondialdehyde(MDA) levels in STZ-induced diabetes were significantly(P < 0.001) reversed by MFFM and were comparable with the effects of glibenclamide, a standard antidiab

Gas cap blow down strategy is normally deployed for Ultra-thin oil rim reservoirs with huge gas caps due to extremely high gas oil ratios from wells in such *** current state leads to loss of production from the oil reserves due to high initial reservoir pressure thus,reducing its net present *** on important factors essential to the productivity of oil rim reservoirs are used to build a heterogeneous ultra-thin reservoir with a time step of 10,000 days using the Eclipse software and its embedded *** reservoir is subjected to a gas cap blowdown via a gas well,then an oil well is initiated into the model at onset and after time periods of 2000 days,4000 days,6000 days and 8000 days to estimate the oil *** is expected that due to the large nature of the gas cap,pressure decline will be drastic and leading to a low oil recovery,hence the injection of water and gas at different rates at the periods *** results indicate an oil recovery of 4.3%during gas cap blow down and 10.34%at 6000 *** oil recoveries of 12.64%and 10.80%are estimated under 30,000 Mscf/day at 4000 days and 1000 stb/day at 6000 days *** shows an incremental oil recovery of 8.34%and 6.5%over that recorded during gas cap blow *** results also indicate that the gas production at those periods was not greatly affected with an estimated increment of 257 Bscf recorded during 30,000 Mscf/day at 4000 *** secondary injection schemes at the respective time steps had positive impact on the overall oil *** is recommended that extra production and injection wells be drilled,enhanced oil recovery options and injection patterns be considered to further increase oil recovery.

利用博尔努盆地内23口探井的钻井、测井资料,借助于Excel、Petrel及Surfer等软件,确定了盆地Kerri-Kerri组、Gombe组、Fika组、Gongila组和Bima组及整个沉积地层的空间分布。对整个沉积地层空间分布研究发现,博尔努盆地共有3个主要坳陷(A、C、D)和1个构造高点B。坳陷A位于盆地东北部,坳陷C和D分别位于盆地东南部和西南部,构造高点B分隔坳陷A和坳陷C。Kerri-Kerri组、Gombe组、Fika组、Gongila组和Bima组在盆地广泛分布,但地层厚度存在变化;3口深层探井(Kadaru-1井、Herwa-1井及Kinasar-1井)仅钻揭Bima组上部层段(岩性为中—粗粒长石砂岩),对Bima组下部层段尚未钻遇。因此建议针对盆地内部的潜在含油气坳陷区开展深层钻探。

Objective:To evaluate the in vitro inhibitory potential of commonly available antibiotic(discs) and paediatric suspensions against bacterial species from polio-positive faecal ***:Commonly available antibiotic (discs) and oral,paediatric suspensions were screened for in vitro inhibitory activities against bacterial species from infantile polio-positive faecal specimens,using agar disc-diffusion and modified agar well-diffusion ***:Isolated bacteria were Bacillus cereus,***,Staphylococcus aureus,Streptococcus pneumoniae,Aeromonas hydrophila,Citrobacter aerogenes,Escherichia coli,Enterobacter aerogenes,Klebsiella pneumoniae,Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Proteus mirabilis,***,Shigella dysenteriae,***,Sh. sonnei and Vibrio *** phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility rates among Gram-positive bacterial species were between 33.3%(augmentin) and 75.0%(chloramphenicol,erythromycin and gentamicin); higher susceptibility rates(48.6%-100.0%) were recorded among Gram-negative bacterial species, while between7.8%/ 10.1%(metronidazole / ampicillin) and 25.2%/28.1%(cotrimoxazole / septrin) were recorded towards paediatric ***:Bacterial species from polio-positive fecal specimens are minimally susceptible to commonly available oral paediatric antibiotic suspensions in Nigeria.

Detailed fieldwork carried out in the southern part of Bida Basin, Nigeria, allowed the documentation of soft sediment deformation structures (SSDS) in the Maastrichtian Patti Formation. The aim of this study is to examine the sedimentary successions, describe and analyse these deformation features, discuss their deformation mechanisms and potential triggers. The Maastrichtian Patti Formation is composed of lithofacies interpreted to have been deposited in tidal and fluvial sedimentary environments. Soft sediment deformation structures recognised in the tidal sediments were clastic dykes, load cast, isolated sand balls, dish-and-pillar structures, convolute lamination, diapiric structures and recumbent folds. Severely deformed cross beds, ring structures, associated sand balls, normal folds and recumbent folds were identified in the fluvial sediments. SSDS recognised were interpreted to have been caused by effects of liquefaction and fluidization. Field observations, facies analysis and morphology of the SSDS indicate that there are relationship between the depositional environments and SSDS. Endogenic processes are considered as the trigger agents and they are represented by rapid sedimentation and overloading, impact of breaking waves, pressure fluctuations caused by turbulent water flow, cyclic stress and current generated by storm waves and changes in water table. The present study did not identify exogenic processes as trigger agent. The occurrence of SSDS in southern Bida Basin strongly favoured a non-tectonic origin but a clear relationship high energy processes in tidal and fluvial depositional environments.

Application of thermotolerant petroleum microbes at reservoir conditions for enhanced oil recovery

Microalgal Exposure to Human Antibiotics Triggers Similarities in Growth and Photosynthetic Responses

The discharge of pharmaceuticals via wastewater into the environment is a great concern due to the constant threat posed to photosynthetic organisms since they are vital for the sustenance of the aquatic food web. To compare the photosynthetic and growth responses of green algae to human antibiotics, Raphidocelis subcapitata and Chlorella vulgaris were exposed to erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole for 96 h. A much higher sensitivity was shown by Raphidocelis to the antibiotics. Although erythromycin was more acutely toxic to photosynthesis (EC50, 24.6 μg/L;EC10, 14.6 μg/L) than growth (EC50, 160 μg/L;EC10, 27 μg/L) in Raphidocelis, chronic effects in terms of EC10 were alike. Interestingly, sulfamethoxazole exhibited similar toxicity towards growth and photosynthesis with the acute and chronic toxicity parameters for growth (EC50, >2000 μg/L;EC10, 260 μg/L for Raphidocelis;and EC50, 47,900 μg/L;EC10, 19,100 μg/L for Chlorella) in consonance with those of photosynthesis (EC50, >2000 μg/L;EC10, 340 μg/L for Raphidocelis;and EC50, 47,500 μg/L;EC10, 13,400 μg/L for Chlorella). Growth and photosynthesis in Raphidocelis were strongly inhibited in this study at environmentally relevant concentrations of erythromycin. The findings from this study demonstrated that photosynthetic yield was a reliable indicator of sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin effects and thus, may be useful as an alternative approach to growth in assessing chronic toxicity in antibiotics.
