Some new fluorinated 3-N-acyl/3-N-alkylaminophenyl-1,2,4-triazino[3,4-b][1,3,4]thiadiazolones (2-12) have been obtained from treatment of 2-(4'-fluorophenyl)-6-(2'-amino-5'-fluorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazino[3,4-b][1,3,4]thiadiazol-4-one(1) with active functional oxygen, sulfur and halogen compounds in different conditions. Former structures of the products have been characterized from elemental and spectral data (UV, IR, NMR and Mass). The new products were evaluated as potential anthelmintic drugs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of low dose radiation on TCE induced oxidative damage in rats. The oxidative damage of both liver and kidney was assessed by serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Gamma Glutamyl Trans-Peptidase (GGTP), Alanine and Aspartate Amino Transferase (ALT & AST) activities in addition concentrations of cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), Triacyglycerols (TGs), urea and creatinine were analyzed. Liver lipid peroxidation (MDA), Nitric Oxide (NO), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, and activities of both Super-Oxide Dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) were measured. Results: TCE administration increase serum ALP, GGTP, ALT, AST activities, cholesterol, triacylglycerols, LDL-c, urea and creatinine concentrations, besides liver MDA and NO, whereas it decreased SOD, GSH-Px activities, GSH level in liver, HDL-c in serum. Low dose of gamma rays (0.5 Gy) exposure significantly improved lipid peroxidation and oxidative injury induced by TCE. Conclusion: The study indicates that treatment with low dose of gamma rays ameliorate harmful effects induced by TCE taking in consideration the effect of gamma radiation as a stimulant of radical detoxification.

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) is a significant health problem facing the world. This virus infects more than 170 million people worldwide and is considered the major cause of both acute and chronic hepatitis. Persons become infected mainly through parenteral exposure to infected material by blood transfusions or injections with nonsterile needles. Although the sexual behavior is considered as a high risk factor for HCV infection, the transmission of HCV infection through sexual means, is less frequently. Currently, the available treatment for patients with chronic HCV infection is interferon basedtherapies alone or in combination with ribavirin and protease inhibitors. Although a sustained virological response of patients to the applied therapy, a great portion of patients did not show any response. HCV infection is mostly associated with progressive liver diseases including fibrosis, cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although the focus of many patients and clinicians is sometimes limited to that problem, the natural history of HCV infection(HCV) is also associated with the development of several extrahepatic manifestations including dermatologic, rheumatologic, neurologic, and nephrologic complications, diabetes, arterial hypertension, autoantibodies and cryglobulins. Despite the notion that HCV-mediated extrahepatic manifestations are credible, the mechanism of their modulation is not fully described in detail. Therefore, the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of HCV-induced alteration of intracellular signal transduction pathways, during the course of HCV infection, may offer novel therapeutic targets for HCV-associated both hepatic and extrahepatic manifestations. This review will elaborate the etiopathogenesis of HCV-host interactions and summarize the current knowledge of HCV-associated diseases and their possible therapeutic strategies.

Physico-Chemical Characterization of Waters and Sediments of Basins in the Cotton Area in Benin: Case of the Alibori Basin in the Commune of Banikoara North of Benin

The Alibori Basin, with an area of 13,400 km2, is a tributary of the Niger River in Benin. It is a river that passes through the potentially agricultural area of Benin. The waters of the river are useful for wildlife and are used for various purposes (drinking water, laundry, domestic activities). They regularly receive the discharges and drainage of the residues of the chemical fertilizers and pesticides not used by crops during the cultivation of the river and watershed bank. This study aims to assess the impact of the agricultural inputs on the quality of the waters from Alibori river on the basis of its physico-chemical characteristics and concentrations in Trace Metal Elements such as Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu. Seven (7) sites were selected along the river. Concentrations of , , , ?, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were measured using a spectrophotometer DR 1800 and that of Pb and Cd by Metalyse. The Metal Trace Elements were measured in the Alibori river sediments after being treated and mineralized using aqua regia. The results revealed that Alibori river characteristics varied with seasons and its waters and sediments were polluted by metals, phosphates and nitrites. The pollution of waters of the Alibori River was due to the intensive use of the chemical fertilizers and pesticides for agricultural purposes.

Background: Tailoring therapy is the target in the management of any cancer;if factors which can predict response to treatment are identified, we can individualize treatment. Locally advanced rectal cancer studies reported that tumor microenvironment and host immune response played roles in sensitivity to chemoradiotherapy (CRT) by proving that both peripheral circulating lymphocytes and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) strongly correlated with the response rate to CRT and it impacted disease outcome. Aim of the work: We aimed to assess the predictive value of peripheral blood lymphocytes and tumor infiltrating lymphocytes by correlation with regression rate post chemo-radiotherapy in patients with rectal cancer, and to find correlation between peripheral and tissue lymphocytes. Method: Before neoadjuvant, CRT venous blood samples were obtained from 40 patients with rectal cancer, and prior to surgery. Blood cell counts in the samples were analyzed using an automated hematology analyzer and flowcytometry used to analyze lymphocyte subsets. Colonscopic biopsies were obtained before the CRT;the numbers and distributions of T cells (CD4 & CD8) were evaluated by immunostaining. Results: Pre CRT peripheral total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, T helper, T cytotoxic lymphocytes significantly correlated with tumor regression rate (p = 0.04, 0.05, 0.06, 0.04 respectively). The density of tissue CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells was highly correlated with tumor regression post CRT (p = 0.01 for both). The high expressions of tissue CD4 & CD 8 were significantly correlated with high number of pretreatment peripheral total lymphocytes, T lymphocytes, T helper, and T cytotoxic lymphocytes with significant p value for all. Conclusion: We concluded that peripheral lymphocytic count and its subsets have significant correlation to tissue CD4, CD8 and both can predict pathological response to CRT;enhancement of lymphocytes mediated immune response can help for outcome improvement.

Diazinon-Induced Clastogenity and Pathological Changes in Ovaries and Testes of Clarias gariepinus

In most tropical developing countries, one of the problems facing aquaculture industry is the pollution of ponds and rivers with pesticides. Chemicals such as diazinon, an organophosphate pesticide, originating from agricultural activity enter the aquatic environment through atmospheric deposition, surface run-off or leaching. Pollutants enter the food chain through accumulation in soft bottom sediment and aquatic organisms. However, information on how these pesticides affect inhabiting organisms is often not available. In a triplicate experimental set-up, seventy-two (72) apparently healthy catfish comprising adult and juvenile of both sexes were therefore exposed to a previously determined no effect concentration (0.405 ppm) of diazinon. Another set of fish was exposed to 0.0625 μg sodium arsenite, a known clastogen, which was used as the positive control, while another set of catfish exposed to the culture water alone was the negative control. Adults and juveniles were exposed separately to avoid cannibalism. After 48 hours of exposure, micronuclei induction was determined in subsets of experimental groups, while exposure continued for 28 days. Catfish organs were harvested on days 21 and 28 to determine the effect of long-term exposure to diazinon on histology. Water quality was also monitored before and during exposure in the experimental groups. The result established a significantly high mean micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes (15.00) in catfish exposed to diazinon suggesting genetic damage (normal is ≤4). The MPE in sodium arsenite exposed fish was 28, while that of the control group was below 4. Effect of sex and age on micronuclei induction was not significant. Histological alteration observed in the ovary and testis was distorted matured cells and extensive testicular degeneration, respectively. The results show that diazinon has clastogenic effect, and may have endocrine disrupting properties because of the histological changes induced in the ovar

Clinical Predictors for Recurrence after Curative Resection for Colorectal Cancer

Purpose: To identify clinical predictors of recurrence of colorectal cancer after curative surgical treatment. Methods: Retrospective follow-up-study of 925 consecutive patients treated with R0-resection for colorectal cancer Stage I, II and III from 1990 until 2000 with a mean follow-up of 60 ± 37 months. Predictors for cancer recurrence were identified in a pilot-sample of these patients, followed by analyses of the rest of the patients (test-sample), and finally with a concluding analyses of the entire patient group. Data were analyzed with Pearson Chi-square test (χ2), Cox regression analyses and log rank test. Results: Tumor stage (Stage I: HR 0.10 (0.05;0.19), Stage II: HR 0.31 (0.24;0.41)) and postoperative reoperations due to complications due to other causes than anastomotic leakage (HR 2.02 (1.21;3.36)) were significant predictors of cancer recurrence in the multivariate Cox regression model. The association between reoperations and recurrence was strongest for the patients with the best prognosis: Stage I and Stage II-cancers. Long duration of surgery, strongly associated with blood-loss and infusions of liquid and blood-products, reoperation due to anastomotic leakage as well as right colon/transversum localization were significant at a trend-level (10%). Conclusions: Tumor stage and reoperations due to postoperative complications other than anastomotic leakage are significant predictors for recurrence after curative surgery for colorectal cancer.
