Ocular Changes in Egyptian Children on Regular Hemodialysis

Background: Chronic Kidney disease (CKD) may cause ocular disorders for many reasons such as uraemia, haemodialysis and hypertension. Aim: To study the ocular changes in a group of Egyptian children with chronic kidney disease on regular hemodialysis. Subjects and Methods: This cross-sectional comparative study was conducted on 30 children on regular hemodialysis and another 30 age and sex-matched healthy children as controls. Their ages ranged from 4 to 17 years. Complete ophthalmological examination including;visual acuity and refraction, anterior segment examination, intraocular pressure (IOP), fundus examination and colored photography were assessed in the same line with routine laboratory investigations for children on regular hemodialysis and their controls. The relation of ocular disorders with related clinical and biochemical variables was measured statistically. Results: The most common eye abnormalities recorded were decreased visual acuity in Lt eye (73.3%) and Rt eye (60%), followed by corneal & conjunctiva calcification were (16.7%) and (13.3%) respectively and fundal changes (13.3%) of the study population. A significant positive relation was found between fundal changes particularly tortuous blood vessel abnormalities with the duration of hemodialysis and serum creatinine level. Conclusion: Ocular abnormalities are common than expected in children on regular hemodialysis. Visual acuity disorder is the major ocular abnormalities recorded in those patients. Regular ophthalmologic assessment is recommended in children to prevent longer-term visual complications.

Optimization of double chamber microbial fuel cell for domestic wastewater treatment and electricity production

Microbial fuel cells(M FCs)represent a new approach for treating w aste w ater along w ith electricity *** present study addressed electricity production from domestic w astew ater using a mediator-less double chamber M *** electricity production w as monitored under different operational conditions for both summer and w inter *** of the anodic and cathodic chambers resulted in a maximal current of 0.784 and 0.645 m A w ith the maximal pow er intensity of 209 and 117 m W/m2in pow er duration of 24 h for the summer and w inter samples,*** electron microscopy show ed that the bacterial biofilm formation on the anode w as denser for the summer sample than that w hen the w inter sample w as used,so w as the total bacterial ***,samples taken during summer w ere considered better in electricity production and w aste w ater treatment than those taken during w inter basically because of the high microbial load during the hot *** parallel,there w as a decrease in both biological oxygen demand(BOD5)and chemical oxygen demand(COD)values which reached 71.8%and 72.85%,respectively at the end of the operation process for the summer sample,w hile there w as no evident decrease for the w inter *** the operating conditions not only increased the potential of using domestic w aste w ater in microbial fuel cells to produce electricity,but also improved the quality of the domestic w aste w ater.

A Photometric and Astrometric Study of Open Star Clusters FSR-163 and Majaess 215 Using Gaia DR3

We have examined most of the astrophysical properties of the two star clusters, FSR-163 and Majaess 215, using the third data release of the Gaia space mission(Gaia DR3). We utilized the py UPMASK method to allocate the probabilities of stars' membership candidates. Using the clusters' trigonometric parallaxes of the members with probabilities P > 50%,we calculated the distance to the clusters of 3290(±140) and 2833(±140) pc, respectively, which match well with our isochrone fitting results on the color–magnitude diagrams. We determined the age of the clusters, and they are 1.00(±0.15) and 3.55(±0.15) Gyr for FSR-163 and Majaess 215, respectively. We evaluated the following photometric parameters: reddenings, distances, galactic geometrical distances, luminosity–mass functions, and total masses of the two clusters. On studying the dynamic state of the two clusters, we found that Majaess 215 is more relaxed than FSR-163.

Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction of Triognella foenum graecum Linn seeds:Determination of bioactive compounds and pharmacological analysis

Objective: To investigate the effect of temperature and pressure on supercritical CO_2 extraction of Triognella foenum graecum Linn seeds, to determine the optimal condition which leads to highest percentage of the accumulative yield and revealing the chemical composition of supercritical CO_2 ***: Temperatures in the range of 40–60C and pressures in the range of 10–25 MPa were used. FTIR and GC–MS analysis were used to detect the bioactive compounds present in the extract. The broth dilution method and slope method were used to evaluate the anti-microbial and anti-tuberculosis activities and the in vitro anti-malarial assay was carried out according to the micro assay protocol of Rieckmann and his ***: The temperature was more affected than the pressure on the extraction performance and the highest yield of the extract(3.111%) was attained at 60C and 10 *** and GC–MS showed that the chemical composition of the extract included conjugated linoleic acid methyl ester as the major active principle(with concentration of72.28%), followed by saturated fatty acid methyl esters(16.03%), steroids(8.09%) and organic siloxane compound(3.61%). The extract showed moderate anti-bacterial activity with MIC values 100, 250, 125 mg/m L towards Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenus respectively. It exhibited high inhibition effect towards the fungi Candida albican with MFC value(250 mg/m L). The extract had low antituberculosis activity with MIC value(100 mg/m L) and comparable MIC value(0.29 mg/m L) towards Plasmodium ***: Supercritical CO_2 extraction as alternate and green technology is performed successfully to extract the bioactive compounds from the seeds of T. foenum graecum Linn and it is concluded that this extract can be used as an alternate source of synthetic anti-biotic drugs.

Ionotropic receptors mediate olfactory learning and memory in Drosophila

Earth resource and environmental monitoring are essential areas that can be used to investigate the environmental conditions and natural resources supporting sustainable policy development,regulatory measures,and their implementation elevating the ***-scale forest fire is considered a major harmful hazard that affects climate change and life over the ***,the early identification of forest fires using automated tools is essential to avoid the spread of fire to a large ***,this paper focuses on the design of automated forest fire detection using a fusion-based deep learning(AFFD-FDL)model for environmental *** AFFDFDL technique involves the design of an entropy-based fusion model for feature *** combination of the handcrafted features using histogram of gradients(HOG)with deep features using SqueezeNet and Inception v3 ***,an optimal extreme learning machine(elM)based classifier is used to identify the existence of fire or *** order to properly tune the parameters of the elM model,the oppositional glowworm swarm optimization(OGSO)algorithm is employed and thereby improves the forest fire detection performance.A wide range of simulation analyses takes place on a benchmark dataset and the results are inspected under several *** experimental results highlighted the betterment of the AFFD-FDL technique over the recent state of art techniques.

Complications of Parotid Surgery—10 Years’ Experience

Background: Parotid surgery with dissection of the facial nerve branches is a technically challenging surgery. Even in experienced hands, parotidectomy has well-documented post-operative complications. We aim to evaluate complications following parotid surgery. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 187 patients who underwent parotidectomy from January 2010 to January 2020 performed in surgical oncology department South Egypt Cancer Institute, Assiut University, from patients (57.3% males and 42.7% females, average age 42.96 years). Results: 78.4% Patients had benign tumors, the most frequent being pleomorphic adenoma 55.1% followed by Warthin’s tumour 16.9%, and 21.6% malignant tumors, mucoepidermoid carcinoma being the most frequent. Superficial parotidectomy was the most common surgery 40.4% performed followed by 25.3%, total conservative parotidectomy, while 1.1%, underwent radical parotidectomy, (extended radical parotidectomy was performed 2.2%), and revision total parotidectomy (Recurrence 6.7%, and parotidectomy with modified radical neck dissection (MRND) 7.9%. The most common complication following parotidectomy was transient facial nerve palsy 21.3%. Permanent facial nerve paresis was observed in 3.9%, sensory deficit in 20.2%, sialocele in 6.7%, hematoma formation 3.4% and wound infection in 7.3%, and recurrence 7.3%. Frey’s syndrome occurred in 7.3% and salivary fistula 5.1%. Conclusion: Parotidectomy is safe procedure causing minimal complications. Transient facial palsy is the most common postoperative complication.

Some new fluorinated 3-N-acyl/3-N-alkylaminophenyl-1,2,4-triazino[3,4-b][1,3,4]thiadiazolones (2-12) have been obtained from treatment of 2-(4'-fluorophenyl)-6-(2'-amino-5'-fluorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazino[3,4-b][1,3,4]thiadiazol-4-one(1) with active functional oxygen, sulfur and halogen compounds in different conditions. Former structures of the products have been characterized from elemental and spectral data (UV, IR, NMR and Mass). The new products were evaluated as potential anthelmintic drugs.

Radio-protective response on the environmental pollutant induced oxidative stress

The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effect of low dose radiation on TCE induced oxidative damage in rats. The oxidative damage of both liver and kidney was assessed by serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), Gamma Glutamyl Trans-Peptidase (GGTP), Alanine and Aspartate Amino Transferase (ALT & AST) activities in addition concentrations of cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c), Triacyglycerols (TGs), urea and creatinine were analyzed. Liver lipid peroxidation (MDA), Nitric Oxide (NO), reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, and activities of both Super-Oxide Dismutase (SOD) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GSH-Px) were measured. Results: TCE administration increase serum ALP, GGTP, ALT, AST activities, cholesterol, triacylglycerols, LDL-c, urea and creatinine concentrations, besides liver MDA and NO, whereas it decreased SOD, GSH-Px activities, GSH level in liver, HDL-c in serum. Low dose of gamma rays (0.5 Gy) exposure significantly improved lipid peroxidation and oxidative injury induced by TCE. Conclusion: The study indicates that treatment with low dose of gamma rays ameliorate harmful effects induced by TCE taking in consideration the effect of gamma radiation as a stimulant of radical detoxification.
