Spousal Involvement in the Workplace of Doctors: What Is Defined as Appropriate or Inappropriate

Background: Workers spend a significant amount of time in the workspace. Involvement of a spouse in a doctor’s workplace can take different forms and come with different intentions. Objectives: The survey aimed to determine the prevalence and extent of spousal involvement in physicians’ workplaces as well as the outcome of such involvement on doctor’ swell-being, productivity, and relationship with colleagues. Methods: This cross-sectional online survey on spousal involvement in the workplace of doctors was conducted among 83 responding doctors from July to August 2023. Results: Among the respondents, 60 (72.3%) had witnessed a doctor’s spouse being involved in the workplace. The most common reason for spousal involvement in the workplace was to protect the spouse from what they perceived as a threat 34 (54.0%). Spouse’s ignorance of boundaries in the workplace (OR: 6.09 (95% CI: 1.70, 21.79) P: 0.003) and exertion of control by the spouse (OR: 11.2 (95% CI: 2.26, 56.41) P: 0.002) were significantly associated with higher odds of inappropriate spousal involvement in the workplace, while expression of love for spouse with acts of kindness was significantly associated with a lowered odd of inappropriate spousal involvement (OR: 0.11 (95% CI: 0.03, 0.36) P: 0.0001). Conclusion: Spousal involvement in the workplace is relatively common. Ignorance of the boundaries of the workplace and exertion of control by the spouse were significant enablers of inappropriate spousal involvement in the workplace of doctors. The establishment of workplace policies that define the limits of spousal involvement in the doctor’s workplace can foster a healthy workspace environment, enhance doctors’ well-being, and improve patient care.

Comparative Study of the Socioeconomic Characteristics and Digital Literacy Level of Agricultural Extension Personnel in Imo and Ebonyi States, South-East, Nigeria

The study comparatively analysed the socioeconomic characteristics and digital literacy level of Agricultural Extension personnel (AEP) in Ebonyi and Imo States, South-East, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of agricultural extension personnel in Ebonyi and Imo States, and to ascertain the digital literacy level of AEP in the studied states. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 312 Agricultural Extension personnel (132 from Ebonyi State Agricultural Development Program and 180 from Imo State Agricultural Development Program) for the study. Data were collected through the use of validated and structured questionnaire, and administered through the help of well-trained enumerators. Data were analysed using simple descriptive statistical tools such as percentages mean score, standard deviation and weighted mean. Findings indicated that they were more male in the both States (55.3% and 57.8%) for Ebonyi and Imo State respectively and that the average age of AEP in Ebonyi and Imo States were 44.7 years and 49.2 years respectively. It was further revealed that the majority (77.3% and 82.8%) had B.Sc./HND as their highest academic qualifications, belonged to professional organisations (62.1% and 75%), and were earning an average monthly income of N58,798 and N62,648 for Ebonyi and Imo State respectively. Also, it was revealed that their mean years of service were 12.4 years and 13.4 years for Ebonyi and Imo State respectively. Almost all of them (87.9% and 95.0%) own a smartphone, had access to the internet (80.3% and 90.0%), but do not own a laptop/ipad (82.6% and 72.8%) for Ebon-yi and Imo State respectively. Results further revealed that Agricultural extension personnel in both Ebonyi and Imo State respectively had low digital literacy level ( = 2.41 and 2.32). The study concluded that AEP in Ebonyi and Imo State respectively had similar socioeconomic characteristics and low level of digital literacy. Gordon Holmes Syndrome is a rare inherited disease characterized by both neurological and reproductive signs and symptoms. Most patients develop neurologic challenges in early adulthood and cerebellar ataxia occurs as the disease progresses. In the majority of patients, hypogonadism is hypogonadotropic but rarely hypergonadotropic. We report a case of a 26-year-old female in Nigeria, with hypergonadotropic hypogonadism and cerebellar atrophy from a non-consanguineous marriage and no family history.

North Atlantic Oscillation and Rainfall Variability in Southeastern Nigeria:A Statistical Analysis of 30 Year Period

This study analyzed rainfall variability in Southeast region of Nigeria using graphical models,as well as using statistical approach to investigate any significant relationship between the global North Atlantic Oscillation(NAO)Index and the regional rainfall variability in region.The study was conducted in three States of Southeastern Nigeria namely,Abia,Ebonyi and Imo States that lie between Latitudes 4040’and 8050’N and Longitudes 6020’and 8050’E.Data for the study included 30 years(1988-2017)archival time-series monthly rainfall values for the three study States,acquired from Nigerian Meteorological Agency(NIMET),offices in the states,and Standardized values of NAOI(North Atlantic Oscillation Index)for the same period,which were collected from a website,on the NOAA Data Center,USA.In the data analyses,the first method was adopted by using graphs to illustrate mean annual rainfall values for thirty years.Coefficient of variability was employed in evaluating the degree of variability of values from the mean rate.The second analysis was accomplished using correlation models to ascertain any relationship between NAOI and rainfall in Southeast Nigeria.The results showed a significant variability of rainfall in the region from January to December(mean monthly)within the study period.A negative correlation value of 0.7525 was obtained from the correlation analysis,showing that the global NAO index and rainfall variability deviate in the opposite direction.Coefficient of multiple determinations(CMD)subsequently showed value of 0.031%,being the variation in rainfall as influenced by the global teleconnectivity,and this means that the NAO index has zero or no influence on rainfall variability in Southeast region of Nigeria.

The outbreak of COVID-19 caused human activities to be affected in one way or another.As a result,measures were put in place by various national governments to reduce the spread of the virus.This paper examines adherence to COVID-19 guidelines in Nigeria among itinerant traders,using a total of 40 eligible participants from selected local governments in Enugu state,Nigeria.The study adapted purposive sampling techniques to identify eligible participants;while in-depth interview was the method used for data collection.Among other findings,result shows that the control measures rolled out by government were seriously undermined.Nomadic traders,driven by economic gains,played covert role in the spread of the virus.This signalled a weak link in the efforts to curb the spread of the virus in Nigeria.The study contributes to a more exact diagnosis of the weak link in the efforts to contain the spread of the virus and how the quest for economic gains drove the abuse of COVID-19 mitigation protocols with its attendant health implications.It therefore recommends that government should strengthen the institutional capacity for detection and control,and provide the critical infrastructural facilities that will make for intensified surveillance in future epidemic or pandemic outbreak.Economic incentives and the effective monitoring of protocol enforcers saddled with the responsibility of enforcing government directives are also encouraged in order to curb compromise.

Evaluation of influential parameters for supersonic dehydration of natural gas: Machine learning approach

The supersonic dehydration of natural gas is gaining more attention due to its numerous advantages over the conventional natural gas dehydration technologies.However,supersonic separators have seen minimal field applications despite the multiple benefits over other gas dehydration techniques.This has been mostly attributed to the uncertainty in ascertaining the design and operating parameters that should be monitored to ensure optimum dehydration of the supersonic separation device.In this study,the decision tree machine learning model is employed in investigating the effects of design and operating parameters(inlet and outlet pressures,nozzle length,throat diameter,and pressure loss ratio)on the supersonic separator performance during dehydration of natural gas.The model results show that the significant parameters influencing the shock wave location are the pressure loss ratio and nozzle length.The former was found to have the most significant effect on the dew point depression.The dehydration efficiency is mainly dependent on the pressure loss ratio,nozzle throat diameter,and the nozzle length.Comparing the machine learning model-accuracy with a 1-D iterative model,the machine learning model outperformed the 1-D iterative model with a lower mean average percentage error(MAPE)of 5.98 relative to 15.44 as obtained for the 1-D model.

Monkeypox(mpox),is a disease from the Poxviridae family that can cause several serious medical issues.This mini-review sought to analyze the existing literature regarding the current mpox outbreak with a focus on the prevalence,diagnostics,and containment measures.Mpox cases have been reported to World Health Organization(WHO)from 85 Member States in all six WHO regions during the period of January 1,2022,through August 3,2022.Standardized or optimized guidelines for the clinical care of patients with mpox are limited,particularly in low-resource settings.In an effort to achieve guidance and meet standards,special attention should be paid to this outbreak in order to eradicate such a rare infectious disease by analyzing prevention and control measures.Patient outcomes may also be poor,and their illnesses may last for a long time.The spectrum of clinical symptoms,including complications and sequelae,as well as aspects of the illness may be indicators of sickness severity and complications;therefore,its clinical presentation must be better understood to improve containment measures.In addition,it is important to create and evaluate a standard of care that takes a variety of parameters into account,including antiviral,immune therapies,and clinical metrics that are particular to mpox.The global emergence of mpox has presented new challenges for public health and has called for further investigation into its epidemiological profile across international contexts.

Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of crude extracts of Ipomoea involucrata leaves in mice and rats

Objective:To investigate antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of crude extract from Ipomoea involucrata leaves(Convolvulaceae) in mice and rats.Methods:The antinociceptive activity was tested using acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing test in mice.The antiinflammatory activity was evaluated using egg albumin -induced oedema of rat paw.Results: Phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids,flavonoids,saponins,terpenoids and tannin.At the doses of 25-100 mg/kg,Ipomoea involucrata exhibited dose-dependent and significant increase in pain threshold in acetic acid -induced writhing test of mice (P<0.05,student t-test) The administration of Ipomoea involucrata leaf extract(25-100 mg/ kg) showed dose-dependent decreases in paw volume of egg albumin induced oedema in rats and a significant higher anti-inflammatory activity compared to the standard control(Aspirin). Conclusions:These results support the claims on the traditional use of the of Ipomoea involucrata leaves in the treatment of toothache,rheumatic pains and other inflammatory conditions.Studies on the isolation and structural elucidation of the active principle are still needed being carried out.

Omicron,the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)variant that is now spreading across the world,is the most altered version to emerge so far,with mutations comparable to changes reported in earlier variants of concern linked with increased transmissibility and partial resistance to vaccineinduced immunity.This article provides an overview of the SARS-CoV-2 variant Omicron(B.1.1.529)by reviewing the literature from major scientific databases.Although clear immunological and clinical data are not yet available,we extrapolated from what is known about mutations present in the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 and offer preliminary indications on transmissibility,severity,and immune escape through existing research and databases.

Roles of commodity futures derivatives and financial crises in global food security

Commodity futures have been largely blamed for the price hikes in 2007/mid-2008 and 2010/2011 and the decreased food security around the world,especially in less developed countries.There still exist serious disagreements between most economists and policymakers as to whether this is the case.We run time-series regressions for all samples and subsamples for lower-income,middle-income,and high-income countries respectively.The empirical results show that commodity futures have a more significant negative impact on food security in low-income countries than in middle-income and high-income economies.Financial crises,however,have a significant impact on food security in all the regional divisions as a whole and are seen to exasperate the negative effect of some of the commodity futures on food security.We also find evidence that a certain degree of speculation in some commodities stabilises prices of those commodities as expected by theory.Our results have important policy implications as policymakers must control these speculations but should also be careful not to overregulate the market.
