Pseudomonas (P.) fragi and P. lundensis have been reported as key spoilage bacteria in aerobically-stored chilled meat. However， the co-spoilage effect of these bacteria has not been effectively evaluated. This study evaluated the spoilage potential of P. fragi， P. lundensis and P. fragi + P. lundensis in vitro and in situ at 4 ℃. The results showed that P. fragi + P. lundensis performed the highest growth rate and displayed larger decomposition zone diameters on Raw-pork juice agar (RJA) plates. P. fragi + P. lundensis inoculants exhibited the strongest proteolytic activity， which resulted in the highest values of trichloroacetic acid (TCA)-soluble peptides， total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) and myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) in chilled pork. Moreover， the inoculated samples showed different pH and sensory changes. Notably， increased amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)， such as octanal， nonanal， 2-nonanone， 1-propanol， 1-octanol， isopropyl acetate， and 2，6-dimethylpyazine， were observed in inoculated P. fragi + P. lundensis samples， hinting their potential use as spoilage markers for spoilage monitoring of co-cultures. This study would provide a deeper understanding of meat spoilage and serve as a reference for future studies to inhibit meat spoilage.

Introduction: WHO estimated that uncorrected refractive errors are the leading cause of visual impairment and second leading cause of blindness globally. University students are prone to developing refractive errors due to their curriculum that requires a lot of near work affecting their performance and quality of life unknowingly. Genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role in the development of refractive errors. This study addresses the paucity of knowledge about refractive errors among university students in East Africa, providing a foundation for further research. Objectives: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with refractive errors among students in the Faculty of Medicine at Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Methodology: This was a cross-sectional descriptive and analytical study in which 368 undergraduate students selected using random sampling were assessed for refractive errors from March 2021-July 2021. Eligible participants were recruited and their VA assessment done after answering a questionnaire. Students whose VA improved on pin hole had subjective retinoscopy and results were compiled and imported to STATA 14 for analysis. Results: The prevalence of refractive errors was 26.36% with (95% CI) among university students especially myopia. Myopia is most predominant at 60%, followed by 37% Astigmatism and hyperopia of 3% among medical students. Astigmatism consisted of largely myopic astigmatism 72% (26) and 28% (10) compound/mixed astigmatism only. Student positive family history of refractive error was found to have a statistically significant relationship with refractive errors with AOR 1.68 (1.04 - 2.72) (95% CI) and P (0.032). Conclusion: The prevalence of refractive errors among university students, especially myopia, was found to be high and family history was associated with students having refractive errors.

Fishmeal is the most preferred source of protein in aquafeeds, but it is expensive and scarce. Hence, Achatina fulica meat meal (AFM), which is much less preferred for human consumption out of three species of African giant land snails, was tested as a fishmeal substitute for Clarias gariepinus growth. Five iso-nitrogenous and iso-calorific diets were formulated, in which AFM substituted fish meal at 0% (control or Diet A), 25% (Diet B), 50% (Diet C), 75% (Diet D) and 100% (Diet E). These dietary treatments were each replicated thrice in a completely randomized design experiment, using 36-L plastic tanks in which the fish were fed daily rations corresponding to 5% of their body weight, for 8 weeks. Water quality parameters in the tanks were monitored. Proximate analyses were conducted on the fish meal, snail meal and experimental diets before the feeding trials. Cost-benefit analysis of the different diets was performed. The crude protein content of AFM (69.18%) was significantly higher than that of fish meal (55.81%). There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in the mean weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and survival rate in fish fed Diet A and Diet B. The best protein efficiency ratio (0.77) was recorded in fish fed Diet B. Furthermore, the survival rate of fish increased with increased levels of AFM substitution. Water quality parameters were within a suitable range for tropical fish culture, indicating that the AFM did not pollute the water. The fish fed 25% AFM diet significantly (P Clarias gariepinus diets at a 25% substitution level. The aquaculture industry can thus exploit the availability of this feed resource.

Evaluating the Impact of the Universal Test and Treat Strategy on the Survival of Patients in the Northwest Region of Cameroon

Introduction: The main outcome of efficiently implemented universal test and treat (UTT) program is improved survival. UTT implementation has been ongoing in Cameroon since 2016 but evaluation data are scarce. This study aims to assess the survival of antiretroviral therapy (ART) patients initiated under UTT in Northwest region of Cameroon. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included HIV-positive patients initiated in 2016 at 27 purposefully selected sites and followed until 2021. Data was anonymously abstracted from ART registers and patients’ charts. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates and Cox model were used to compare the survival of patients initiated under UTT with those initiated otherwise, using stata version 14.0. Results: In total, 2490 HIV-positive patients (median age 42.7 years, 94.7% adults, and 69.0% female) participated in the study. Of 1389 patients with viral load (VL) test results, 55% were initiated on ART late. The VL suppression rate of patients initiated late and those initiated early were similar. During follow-up, 1020 (40.9%) participants censored. The survival curves of patients initiated early on ART and those initiated late were similar during the first 2.5 years of follow-up but significantly (p Conclusions: This study confirms the expected impact of UTT. Programs only need to close existing implementation gaps along the critical pathways (diagnosis and treatment) of UTT, focusing more on males.

Early childhood severe scalds in a developing country: A 3-year retrospective study

The burns intensive care unit (BICU) staff observed an increasing number of pediatric scald burn admissions as a result of increase injuries associated with the scald burns. A retrospective study was conducted to identify scalds demographics, etiologies, and mortality risk factors. This descriptive study comprised a total of 166 patients aged 0-5 years, who were admitted to the BICU of the Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Unit (RPSBU) through the Accident and Emergency (A and E) Centre of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) from May 1st 2009 to April 30th 2012. Source of information was the BICU Computerized Database System. Data extracted included demographics as well as treatment methods and outcomes. The study population was 166;92 (55.4%) males and 74 (44.6%) females. Scalds admissions were 141 (84.9%);13 (9.2%) of them died, 83 (58.9%) discharged, and 45 (31.9%) transferred-out to another burn ward and pediatric surgery ward in the hospital. Scald patients' demographics included 78 males (55.3%) and 63 females (44.7%);mean age was 2.18 years. Mortality risk factors identified were age 30% (P = 0.017), and multiple body parts affected (P = 0.049). The current study showed age, hot water, and Total Burns Surface Area (TBSA) as risk factors of early childhood scalds. Education on scalds prevention targeting mothers/caregivers is needed to create awareness of the frequency, severity, and danger associated with pediatric scalds.

Investigation that protein oxidation to the formation of advanced glycation end products(AGEs)after chicken myofibrillar protein glycation is *** of protein oxidation induced by different concentrations of hydroxyl radicals(·OH)were developed after the chicken myofibrillar protein mild glycation(MPG).Results exhibited that levels of AGEs and surface hydrophobicity(H_(0))steadily increased with the a ddition of h ydrogen peroxide(H_(2)O_(2))***,levels of s ulfhydryl group,free amino group,and particle size gradually decreased with the H_(2)O_(2)*** protein carbonyl value increased in H_(2)O_(2)concentration until 10 mmol/***'s correlation indicated that MPG structure modification(unfolding and degradation)induced by protein oxidation were significantly positively correlated with AGEs concentration(P<0.05).Finally,a mechanism was proposed to hypothesize t he effect of protein oxidation on the formation of AGEs under MPG conditions.

In August2011, an enzootic disease characterized by hemorrhage throughout body surface,enlarged spleen and kidney occurred in cage farmed red drum fish, in Dongtou, Zhejiang ofChina. The diseased fish weighed between100-300g，and the cumulative mortality within60days was higher than70%. Several bacterial isolates （strainWZMH110819） that exhibited thesame phenotypic traits and biochemical characteristics were isolated from the lesions ofdiseased fish. According to the results obtained from biochemical tests and sequence analysisof the16S rDNA gene, the bacterial isolates were identified as Streptococcus iniae. In thechallenge trials, the LD50value of the clinical bacterial isolate WZMH110819was9.65×106CFU per fish. Moreover, bath exposure or oral administration by Streptococcus iniae alsocaused a considerable number of deaths in fish. Antibiotic susceptibility tests showed thatstrain WZMH110819was sensitive to most of the antibiotics tested including ampicillin,ceftazidime, erythromycin, kanamycin and gentamicin in *** drugs were found tohave a strong bactericidal effect （i.e their MIC≥MBC） against bacterial isolate （strainWZMH110819）. Meanwhile the study on the growth properties of strain WZMH110819indicated that it grows better in the temperature, pH and salinity range between20-37°C,6.0-8.0, and0-20‰with their optimum values of30°C,7.0and0‰, respectively. This findinghas provided a helpful basis in controlling and prevention of this disease in red drum. It wouldalso provide a theoretical basis in developing a vaccine in order to reduce the negative reddrum affects on the species.
