To test if stabilizing Ampicillin trihydrate (AT) with Aluminium-Magnesium Silicate (AMS) can enhance its antibacterial activities, different concentrations of AT solution and of a formulation of AT in the AMS, were made and used for sensitivity test on Salmonella gallinarum cultures. Also, S. gallinarum-infected chick. were treated with;10 mg/k. (AT), 10 mg/k. (AT in AMS), 7.5 mg/k. (AT), 7.5 mg/k. (AT in AMS). Mean diameter of inhibition zone, 28.39 ± 2.07 mm produced by AT did not vary significantly (P > 0.05) from 26.36 ± 2.05 mm produced by AT in AMS. However, mean Salmonella gallinarum culture forming units per ml of bile, 17.6 ± 11 × 105of the untreated chick. and 3.4 ± 0.81 × 105(80.58% reduction), 2.4 ± 0.67 × 105(85.70% reduction), 5.4 ± 1.93 × 105(69.20% reduction ) and 0.38 ± 0.13 × 105(97.80% reduction ) of the respective treated groups, showed AMS significantly (P S. gallinarum infection, in vivo.

To test effect of a synthetic Aluminium-Magnesium Silicate (AMS) on anthelmintic efficacy of piperazine citrate (PC), 35 mice were infected by dosing each, 0.15 ml Helignosomoides bak.ri sample which contained 200 infective larvae, per os. Following comfirmation of establishment of infection by faecal floatation, they were assigned into seven groups of 5 each, and were treated with piperazine citrate, per os, at rates of 110 mg/k. (PC), 110 mg/k. (PC in AMS), 82.5 mg/k. (PC), 82.5 mg/k. (PC in AMS), 55 mg/k. (PC) and 55 mg/k. (PC in AMS) respectively. The seventh group served as untreated control. Mean Eggs Per Gramm of faeces (EPG) were 375 ± 32.27, 175 ± 14.43, 830 ± 1.04, 70 ± 12.25, 850 ± 293.06, 370 ± 58.54 and 2,200 ± 2.55 respectively. This showed EPG reduction rates of 83%, 92%, 62%, 97%, 61% and 83% among the respective treated groups.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of unilateral cryptorchidism on semen and sperm characteristics in West African Dwarf (WAD) buck.. Methods: Semen was collected using electroejaculator from five unilaterally cryptorchid (UC) and five normal (non-cryptorchid) WAD buck. and analyzed for gross, microscopic and biochemical characteristics. Results:Gross semen evaluation showed no differences between the groups in semen color, viscosity and pH, whereas the normal buck. yielded semen with significantly higher specific gravity (P=0.0436) and volume (P=0.0388) than the UC group. Following semen microscopic evaluation, the percentage of sperm vitality (live sperm) was not significantly different between both groups. However, UC buck. yielded semen with significantly lower sperm motility (P=0.0387), sperm concentration per mL (P=0.0020) and total sperm count per ejaculate (P=0.0074). The percentage total sperm abnormality was also higher (Pk.. Due to the hereditary attribute of the condition, it is recommended that animals with this condition should not be used in breeding to forestall increasing prevalence of cryptorchidism in goats.

The current study investigated correlations between the expression of leucine-rich repeats and immunoglobulin-lik. domain 1 （LRIG1） and antioxidant enzymes and related proteins, including manganese superoxide dismutase, glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic or regulatory subunit, thioredoxin and thioredoxin reductase, in both human ependymoma and oligodendroglioma. Results revealed that the cytoplasmic expression of LRIG1 was associated with expression of glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit in the human ependymoma, while the nuclear expression of LRIG1 was associated with expression of thioredoxin reductase. In human oligodendroglioma, the cytoplasmic expression of LRIG1 was associated with expression of the glutamate cysteine ligase catalytic subunit. Both the nuclear and perinuclear expressions of LRIG1 were associated with expression of glutamate cysteine ligase regulatory subunit. These results indicated that several antioxidant enzymes and related proteins contributed to LRIG1 expression, and that these may participate in the antioxidation of the cells.

The failure of testicular descent (cryptorchidism) is k.own to cause abnormal testicular development and function. Unilateral cryptorchidism is prevalent in West African Dwarf (WAD) goats particularly in some areas where affected buck. are presumed to have better libido and reproductive efficiency by farmers. Androgens produced by the testes can influence libido and other hormonal and metabolic processes in the body. The study investigated the influence of natural unilateral cryptorchidism on serum reproductive hormones, total protein, lipid profile, oxidative stress, and haematology and libido in WAD buck.. Ten WAD buck. (aged 12 - 14 months) comprising 5 buck. with normal descended testes (N group) and 5 unilaterally-cryptorchid buck. (UC group) were studied. Blood and sera were collected and evaluated for haematology, serum total proteins and lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoproteins) concentrations, serum oxidative stress (catalase and lipid peroxidation activity), and serum levels of reproductive hormones (testosterone, FSH and LH). Libido testing of buck. was also performed by randomly isolating and confining each individual male with a doe on standing heat and recording the number of mountings made by the male within a period of 5 minutes as the libido score. The evaluated haematological indices and serum levels of proteins, lipids, oxidative stress indicators and reproductive hormones were not significantly different between the N and UC groups (p > 0.05). Although a higher mean libido score was recorded in N buck. compared to the UC group, this difference was not significant. Whereas no negative effects were observed in the evaluated physiologic indices in UC buck., these findings do not support the presumption by farmers that UC buck. have better libido than buck. with fully descended testes. Therefore, these animals should not be selected for breeding to avoid increasing the prevalence of unilateral cryptorchidism due to its genetic attribute.

The Dynamics of Domestic Water Vending in Enugu North L.G.A of Enugu State, Nigeria

The present investigation provides a case study of water vending in Enugu North Local Government Area, Enugu State of South Eastern Nigeria. Questionnaire copies were randomly distributed in the study area to 200 households. Data obtained from the field were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square test. The analysis revealed that almost all the residents of Enugu North L.G.A. obtain their water from independent water vending systems which are operated by the private sector. Tank.r truck. distributing and small retail water vendors all operate in the study area. There are an estimated number of 250 tank.r truck.drivers serving Enugu North L.G.A. Approximately 35 tank.r truck. serve Hill- top/Udi siding ward, while there are a total of 52 retail vendors in Onuasata ward. Majority of the respondents are low income earners who spend within the ranges of NGN500 ($3.33) and NGN1500 ($10) a month on water on the average. 50.0 percent of these respondents opined that vended water was expensive. Of the respondents, 49.4 percent consumed 91 - 100 litres per capita per day, which is less than the 120 litres per capita per day recommended by the Federal Re- public of Nigeria’s National water supply and sanitation policy document of 2000. This deficit can be attributed to the cost of vended water. From the chi-square test, there is significant difference in the unit cost of water sold by vendors in the various wards in Enugu North L.G.A. In the absence of regular water provision through pipe-connections from the public utility, water vending should be supported but regulated. Meeting the water and sanitation target and optimizing water resources for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015 will require a dramatic scaling up of joint efforts by the state government and the people in ensuring that vendors provide safe water at a low cost.

Although 5-aminolevulinic acid（5-ALA）-mediated photodynamic therapy（PDT） has been demonstrated to be a novel and effective therapeutic modality for some human malignancies, its effect and mechanism on glioma are still controversial. Previous studies have reported that 5-ALA-PDT induced necrosis of C6 rat glioma cells in vitro. The aim of this study was to further investigate the effect and mechanism of 5-ALA-PDT on C6 gliomas implanted in rats in vivo. Twenty-four rats bearing similar size of subcutaneously implanted C6 rat glioma were randomly divided into 3 groups： receiving 5-ALA-PDT（group A）, laser irradiation（group B）, and mock.procedures but without any treatment（group C）, respectively. The growth, histology, microvessel density（MVD）, and apoptosis of the grafts in each group were determined after the treatments. As compared with groups B and C, the volume of tumor grafts was significantly reduced（P〈0.05）, MVD was significantly decreased（P〈0.001）, and the cellular necrosis was obviously increased in group A. There was no significant difference in apoptosis among the three groups. The in vivo studies confirmed that 5-ALA-PDT may be an effective treatment for gliomas by inhibiting the tumor growth. The mechanism underlying may involve increasing the cellular necrosis but not inducing the cellular apoptosis, which may result from the destruction of the tumor microvessels.
