Back.round. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma involving multi ple organs is not well characterized. Methods. To obtain a better understanding of gastric MALT lymphoma with multiple organ involvement, we compared Helicobact er pylori infection status; response to eradication therapy; prevalence of genet ic abnormality, including t(11;18)-(q2l;q2l); and clonality of tumor cells betw een patients with gastric MALT lymphoma with and without multiple organ involvem ent. Results. Of 54 patients with only gastric involvement, 51 were positive for H. pylori (94.4%), whereas only 3 of 9 patients with multiple organ involvemen t had the infection (33.3%). Among those who received eradication therapy, the remission rate in patients with only gastric involvement was significantly highe r than that in patients with multiple organ involvement (71.4%vs 33.3%; P < 0. 05). The positive rate of AP12-MALT1 fusion transcripts was significantly great er in patients with multiple lesions with either single or multiple organ involv ement than in those with a single gastric lesion (71.4%vs 12.5%; P < 0.05), bu t 2 of 2 patients with multiple gastric lesions had the fusion transcripts. Of 5 patients with multiple organ involvement tested for clonality of the CDR3 regio n, distinct clones were detected in lymphoma lesions in different organs in 3 pa tients, whereas the identical clone was present in the different lesions in the remaining 2 patients. Conclusions. Gastric MALT lymphoma with multiple organ inv olvement is often associated with API2-MALT1 fusion transcripts. Moreover, H. p ylori infection is rare in patients with multiple organ involvement as compared to those with only gastric involvement. Patients with gastric MALT lymphoma with multiple organ involvement who are positive for H. pylori are resistant to erad ication therapy.

Aims: To evaluate the statistical significance of the parameters that affect underestimation of intraocular pressure (IOP) after laser in situ k.ratomileusis (LASIk. for myopia. Methods: In this prospective case series study, patient age, axial length, preoperative corneal curvature, preoperative central corneal thick.ess (CCT), preoperative IOP, and ablation depth were studied to determine whether they affect the underestimation of IOP in the right eyes of 100 consecutive patients who underwent LASIk. Results: The preoperative IOP was the most important parameter for an amount of underestimated Goldmann applanation tonometric IOP (GAT) and non-contact tonometric IOP (ncIOP) at 1 month (r=0.654, P 4.000). However, these parameters had small bivariate correlation coef-ficients, and were considered as minor parameters. Conclusion: Preoperative IOP is the most important parameter that affects an underestimation of IOP after LASIk.for myopia. Eyes with a higher true IOP have a larger underestimation of the IOP after LASIk.for myopia. From these results, the importance of the modulus of elasticity on IOP measurements was discussed.

The critical stage for inducing oviparity and embryonic diapause in parthenogenetic Artemia(Crustacea: Anostraca): an experimental study

The brine shrimp Artemia exhibits two reproductive modes: 1) oviparity, producing diapause embryos;and 2) ovoviviparity, producing free-swimming nauplii. Previous studies have suggested the existence of a critical stage that determines the reproductive mode. Physicochemical factors, such as photoperiod, temperature, and salinity, have been suggested to irreversibly aff ect the reproductive mode of oocytes during this critical stage. In this study, experiments were carried out using a photoperiod and temperature-sensitive parthenogenetic Artemia clone where maternal Artemia were shifted bidirectionally between ovoviviparity (18 h L:6 h D, 27℃) and oviparity (6 h L:18 h D, 19℃) culture conditions. In the main experiment ( Artemia shifted at six diff erent stages including the post-larva Ⅱ to adult Ⅱ), the reproductive mode of fi rst brood was converted when shifting was performed on post-larva Ⅱ and Ⅲ but was not converted when females were shifted after post-larva Ⅲ. A supplementary experiment further revealed that the reproductive mode of fi rst brood could be altered when shifting females at an "early phase of postlarva Ⅳ", characterized by a developing ovisac reaching the middle of the third abdominal segment, ventral spines, and some oocytes growing larger than the others. In both experiments, reproductive modes of the second brood were signifi cantly aff ected when the shifting was performed on post-larva Ⅳ. These results suggest that the critical stage for inducing oviparity and embryonic diapause is at the previtellogenic stage of oocytes, or at maternal "early phase of post-larva Ⅳ" for the first-brood off spring. During this stage, diff erential gene expression patterns of the two destined oocytes may be triggered by the tok.n stimuli signals received by the oocytes.

Effects of Pressure, Solvent, and Substituent on the Thermal Isomerization of 2-Oxo- spiro[diazirine-3,3'-indoline]

The k.netic effects of pressure, solvent, and substituent on the thermal isomerization from 2 oxospiro[diazirine 3,3 indoline] to 3 diazo 2 oxo indoline have been examined. The rate constants of the thermal isomerization increased with increasing external pressure and were related to the σ + P substituent constant of Hammett correlation. The results suggest that the thermal isomerization proceeds via a dipolar transition state involving heterolytic bond fission. However, the k.netic solvent effects on the thermal isomerization were not observed. The special solvent effects were discussed on the basis of the linear free energy relationship.

Electron scattering by Friedel oscillations in carbon nanotubes

Multi-walled carbon nanotube network. were confirmed to exhibit a linear decrease in resistivity with increasing temperature from 100 to above 400 *** linearity was explained using a defect scattering model that involved Friedel oscillations(that is,electron-electron interactions).The applicability of this model,which was originally proposed for graphene,to carbon nanotubes was assessed based on a comparison of various experimental *** in the slopes of the resistivity-temperature plots following the introduction of defects,as well as an effect of charge concentration on the slope were k.y predictions of this *** results obtained from few-walled carbon nanotube network. are also *** the literature,linear resistivity-temperature plots were obtained from other graphene derivatives,indicating that the linearity originates from the hexagonal symmetry of these *** present work.also indicated a relationship between the appearance of linearity and negative magnetoresistance above 100 *** on a mechanism incorporating scattering in association with Friedel oscillations and conventional electron conduction models,the universality of resistivity-temperature plots obtained from carbon nanotube network. is introduced.

MICROMECHANICS OF THE DAMAGE-INDUCED CELLULAR MICROSTRUCTURE IN SINGLE CRYSTAL Ni-BASED SUPERALLOYS

An analytical method to investigate the morphological evolution of the cellular mi-crostructure is explored and proposed. The method is essentially based on the Es-helby 's micromechanics theory, and it is extended so as to be applied for a material system containing inclusions with high volume fraction, by employing the average stress field approximation by Mori and Tanak.. The proposed method enables us to discuss a stable shape of precipitate in the material system, which must be influenced by many factors: e.g., volume fraction of precipitate; Young's modulus ratio and lattice misfit between matrix and precipitate; external stress field in multiaxial state; and heterogeneity of plastic strain between matrix and precipitate. A series of numerical calculations were summarized on stable shape maps. The application of the method to predict the γ' rafting in superalloys during creep showed that the heterogeneity of plastic strain between matrix and precipitates may play a significant role in the shape stability of the precipitate. Furthermore, it was shown that the method was successfully applied to estimate the morphology of the cellular microstructure formed in CMSX-4 single crystal Ni-based superalloy.

Improvement of aerodynamic stability of suspension bridges with H-shaped simplified stiffening girder

Wind-tunnel study on the improvement of aerodynamic stability of simplified suspension-bridge girder structures was conducted with using a 1/40-scaled section model. Objective of the study is the development of an economically superior suspension bridge with 500-1,000 m center span length. The wind-tunnel test showed that an edge-girder type cross section exhibited large amplitude torsional vortex-induced vibration as well as torsional flutter at a low wind speed. Accordingly, aerodynamic countermeasures of open grating deck.and triangular fating, and structural countermeasures of center stay, diagonal bracing and mass increase were tried to improve the aerodynamic stability. Finally, feasibility of the best combination to a full-scale bridge was examined by structural analysis.

Diagnostic criteria for autoimmune pancreatitis in Japan

Autoimmune pancreatitis （AIP） is a particular type of pancreatitis of presumed autoimmune etiology. Currently, AIP should be diagnosed based on combination of clinical, serological, morphological, and histopathological features. When diagnosing AIP, it is most important to differentiate it from pancreatic cancer. Diagnostic criteria for AIP, proposed by the Japan Pancreas Society in 2002 first in the world, were revised in 2006. The criteria are based on the minimum consensus of AIP and aim to avoid misdiagnosing pancreatic cancer as far as possible, but not for screening AIR The criteria consist of the following radiological, serological, and histopathological items：（1） radiological imaging showing narrowing of the main pancreatic duct and enlargement of the pancreas, which are characteristic of the disease; （2） laboratory data showing abnormally elevated levels of serum y-globulin, IgG or IgG4, or the presence of autoantibodies; （3） histopathological examination of the pancreas demonstrating mark.d fibrosis and prominent infiltration of lymphocytes and plasma cells, which is called lymphoplasmacytic sclerosing pancreatitis （LPSP）. For a diagnosis of AIP, criterion 1 must be present, together with criterion 2 and/ or criterion 3. However, it is necessary to exclude malignant diseases such as pancreatic or biliary cancer.

PRODUCTION OF HIGH QUALITYLUBRICATING BASE OIL

Bench studies were conducted on a hydrocrack.ng (HDC) catalyst produced by Nippon Mitsubishi Oil Corp (NMOC) and its affiliate company, Nippon Mitsubishi Petroleum Refining Co (NMPRC). NMOC and NMPRC operate their hydrocrack.r both in fuel oil production mode and in lubricating oil production mode. In the latter, high viscosity index lubricating oil called VHDC is produced. By applying the VHDC and efficient friction modifier technology, NMOC has developed super fuel economy 5W-20 engine oil which could improve automobile fuel economy by ∼ 5% resulting in significant saving of gasoline. The VHDC Group III base oil improves the performance of industrial lubricant, such as turbine oils. To continue to supply such high quality of lubricating oil, NMOC and NMPRC have developed the hydrocrack.ng catalyst which contains zeolite as one of its components and mak.s the higher conversion rate possible. After many bench scale tests, the new catalyst was loaded into the commercial hydrocrack.r and is still running well.

Photostabilizing effects of singlet oxygen quenchers on long chain cyanine dyes

The total rate constants of the reaction of six antioxidants with singlet oxygen were measured by fluorospectroscopy,and the effects of these antioxidants on the photostability of the dyes were also investigated *** results reveal that the six antioxidants are the effective quenchers of singlet oxygen (~1O_2)and can increase the photostability of the *** power of metal chelates to quench ~1O_2 is the strongest,and the chelates show the most effects on the photostability of the *** photostability of the dyes has something to do with the relative amount of the antioxidant used.
