Using “Water Evaluation and Planning” (WEAP) Model to Simulate Water Demand in Lobo Watershed (Central-Western Cote d’Ivoire)

Climate change continues to pose a threat to the sustainability of water resources while, water need is increasing. In spite of the efforts made by the state authorities to build water infrastructure, a large majority of the population is not having access to drinking water. In this study, Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model was used to model the current situation of water supply and demands, to create scenarios for future water demands and supply. The results show that, in contrast to the livestock sector, which has a zero DNS, huge deficits are observed in reference scenario. These unsatisfied demands (DNS) are dominated by deficits in rice irrigation. The analysis of the evolution of demand according to the growth scenarios has shown that the deficits already observed in the reference scenario will reach 100.45 × 106 m3 in 2040. To mitigate the effects of such deficits, water management optimization measures have been proposed. Strengthening the water supply to urban centers from the creation of dams could considerably reduce the observed deficits. These results are an important decision support tool for sustainable water resource management in the Lobo watershed. However, these strategies to improve access to water depend on the government’s political will on water and economic opportunities.

Drinking water supply to people in rural areas is increasingly oriented towards the search for groundwater. However, these resources, which were once of good quality, are currently threatened by various sources of pollution points and diffuse. The objective of this study is to map the intrinsic vulnerability to groundwater pollution of the Lobo watershed in Nibéhibé. The intrinsic vulnerability mapping method, PaPRIKa adapted or PaPRI which acronym is the protection of aquifers (Pa) based on three criteria: P for protection, R for rock type, I represents infiltration was used. The results show three (3) vulnerability classes, which are moderate, high and very high. This map shows that the high vulnerability class (89%) dominates the study area. This predominance shows that the groundwater of the Lobo watershed is at high risk of pollution.

Mineralization of Natural Spring Water in the City of Daloa (West-Central Côte d’Ivoire)

The water from natural springs in the city of Daloa is increasingly used by the population for its drinking water needs, even though its quality remains unknown. This study aims to determine the acquisition mechanism of the mineralization of these waters. Thus, physicochemical analyses were carried out on 10 spring water samples in February 2019. A summary statistical analysis of the results obtained shows that these waters are acidic (4.81 ≤ pH ≤ 5.39) and very weakly mineralised, with 50% of the conductivities below 100 μS·cm-1. The average iron (0.5 ± 1.02 mg/L) and manganese (0.61 ± 0.90 mg/L) contents show that these two parameters are increasing in the spring water. The Normalized Principal Component Analysis (NPCA) shows that mineralization is mainly controlled by surface inputs of elements (anthropogenic pollution), then the oxidation-reduction phenomenon and, finally, the water-rock contact (mineralization-residence time). Otherwise, the very low expression of water-rock contact (mineralization-residence time) in the acquisition of the mineralization reflects a short residence time of the water in the aquifer.

Using Water Quality Index for Assessing of Physicochemical Quality of Quaternary Groundwater in the Southern Part of Abidjan District (Côte d’Ivoire)

In this study, fourteen physicochemical parameters were monitored at 61 groundwater sampling points located in the southern part of Abidjan District. Each water sampling location was sampled in March and July 2007, representing respectively the long dry season and the long wet season. Groundwater evaluation index and statistical methods were used to assess Quaternary groundwater physicochemical quality in term of drinking and irrigation purposes. The groundwater samples irrespective of seasons fell in mixed K-Na-HCO3 and K-Na-Cl types. Groundwater quality index values varied from 14.01 to 593.44 and from 20.88 to 567.44, in dry and rainy seasons, respectively. In both seasons, 9.83% exhibited poor water quality and 3.27% indicated unsuitable water for drinking purposes. The studied water wells were heavily contaminated with nitrate, nitrite and ammonium in the strongly urbanized areas at Treichville, Koumassi, Marcory, Port-Bou?t and Grand-Bassam. The degree of correlation between physicochemical parameters suggested that groundwater quality was mainly related to geogenic (rock–water interaction) and anthropogenic sources (domestic sewage), and intrusion of marine and lagoon waters in the study area. Sodium adsorption ratio was generally low during study period, indicating most groundwater sampled was suitable for irrigation purposes.

Interest of Electrical Logging in Implementation of Technical Equipment for Water Drilling: Case of the Abrobakro Collecting Field (South-East Ivory Coast)

This work concerns the collecting field of the Abrobakro site, the objective of which is to determine the thickness of the layers crossed during drilling from electrical logging in order to propose the equipment plan for the various boreholes. The electrical logging data sheets, particularly those on resistivity and expeditious granulometry using a 1.25 mm and 2 mm mesh sieve, were used. The layer thicknesses are determined with the inflection points on the graphs. The electrical logging shows that the sands in the study area have resistivity values between 400 and 5000 Ω.m. The decrease in resistivity observed at 50 m for all boreholes shows that the static level of the groundwater is at this depth. The results of the accelerated granulometry show that the first 20 meters contain more fine particles and coarse to very coarse sands from 20 m. The granulometry of the screen laying areas shows that the 1.5 mm slot openings are best suited for all drilling in the Abrobakro collecting field. The diameter d10 of the aquiferous sands of the collecting field is close to 1.25 mm.
