Variations in the radial growth rate of 24 isolates belonging to ten species of Trichoderma, three isolates of conifer pathogen Heterobasidion annosum s.s. and four isolates of H. parviporum were evaluated by incubation on a solid malt extract medium at a temperature of 4℃, 15℃ and 21℃. Trichoderma antagonism against Heterobasidion was investigated in dual culture in vitro. The slowest rate of growth was referable to all seven strains of Heterobasidion spp. All Heterobasidion spp. strains were overgrown by 63% of Trichoderma spp. strains after two weeks at 21℃ and by 33% of strains at 15℃. 21% of Trichoderma strains did not grow and only four strains belonging to T. koningii, T. viride and T. viridescens demonstrated the ability to completely overgrow Heterobasidion spp. after two weeks incubation at 4℃. According to the antagonistic efficiency, Trichoderma strains were divided into five groups with an Euclidean distance of 25. The groups contained isolates from different species. It was suggested that selected psychrotrophic fast growing T. viride, T. koningii and T. viridescens strains could be examined in different substrate conditions as suitable antagonist agents for the control of H. annosum and H. parviporum.

Effect of Processing Method on Carotenoid Profiles of Oils from Three Varieties of Nigerian Palm Oil (Elaise guinensis)

This study assessed the effect of processing method on the carotenoid profile of oil from three varieties of Nigerian oil palm fruits (Elaise guinensis). Specific varieties of the Elaise guinensis, which are the dura, pesifera and tenera were obtained from National Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR) in Edo state, Nigeria. The samples were divided into two and processed using two different methods as commonly practiced in south-eastern Nigeria, the hot and cold processes. The oil extracted from each of the processes was then analyzed for oil characteristics using standard analytical methods while the carotenoid profile was analyzed using HPLC C-21 column. The results generated were subjected to the one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results of carotenoid constituent identified include: lutein, neurosporene (trans), neurosporene (cis), α-Zeacarotene(cis), α-Zeacarotene(trans), phytoene, phytofluene, β-zeacarotene, 13 and 13’ cis α-carotene, 13 cis β-carotene, trans α-carotene, 9 cis α-carotene, trans β-carotene, αcarotene a(cis), α-carotene b(cis), α-carotene (trans), γ-carotene (trans), γ-carotene b(cis), lycopene (cis) and lycopene (trans). The results of physicochemical characteristics of the oil samples extracted range from 0.922 ± 0.004 - 0.916 ± 0.001 for specific gravity (SG), 8.10 ± 0.17 - 4.88 ± 0.04 mg KOH/g for acid value, 4.29% ± 0.02% - 2.44% ± 0.02% for free fatty acid value (FFA), 6.00 ± 0.21 to 204.67 ± 0.98 mgKOH/g for saponification value and 9.53 ± 0.23 - 5.25 ± 0.33 mEq/kg;for peroxide value while the carotenoids values were between 53.735 ± 0.10 and 123.389 ± 0.20 mg/100g. From the result, we can observe that the main constituent of the palm oil carotenoid is the β-carotene which makes up to about 80% of the total carotene. Statistical analysis revealed that no significant difference exists between the mean of each of the processing methods on the carotenoid profile of the oil sample analyzed.

Iodine Deficiency Diseases (IDDs) occupy important positions in the health problems of developing countries. Salt Iodisation has been the common approach to solving these problems. However, apart from the problems of lack of compliance by salt manufacturers, and inculturation of the consumers, health conditions aggravated by high salt intake by humans have become increasingly relevant. These problems can be eliminated if the commonly produced and consumed plants are fortified with Iodine. The prospects are in the inclusion of Iodine-containing compounds in the inorganic fertilizers used by farmers. In this study, Potassium Iodide and Potassium Iodate were used as inoculants. Five different concentrations—0.1 M, 0.2 M, 0.3 M, 0.4 M, and 0.5 M of Potassium Iodide and Potassium Iodate solutions were used to inoculate the soils on which the following edible African plants were planted: Murraya koenigii;Ocimum gratissimum;Cucurbita pepo;Solanum nigrum;Amaranthus hybridus and Abelmoschus esclentus, Corchorous olitoruis, Solanum lycopersicum, Zingiber officinale, Telfairia occidentalis, Talinium triangulare, Solanum melongena. Controls were also planted. After 14 days, alkaline dry ash method was used to determine the Iodine concentrations in the plants. The results showed that Murraya koenigii showed the highest absorption of Iodine 6.90 mg/kg at 0.3 M using KI, followed by Amaranthus hybridus 6.40 mg/kg at 0.1 M. Solanum nigrum, Ocimum gratissimum and Zingiber officinale also showed good absorption. Other plants except Murraya koenigii, Ocimum gratissimum, Solanum nigrum and Zingiber officinale showed very low tolerance to KI absorption. The result also showed that Telfairia occidentalis showed the highest absorption of iodine 8.20 mg/kg at 0.2 M of KIO3 followed by Cucurbita pepo 6.40 mg/kg at also 0.2 M of KIO3. Murraya koenigii, Ocimum gratissimum, Solanum nigrum, Zingiber officinale also showed good absorption of KIO3. Some of the plants were not able to tolerate the

The effect of different combinations of botanical spices such as clove and nutmeg in different proportion on the antioxidants activities which include lipid peroxidation(LPO),superoxide dismutase(SOD),catalase(CAT),glutathione-S-transferase(GST)and glutathione peroxide(GPX)in juveniles and adults sizes of Clarias gariepinus was investigated using different combinations of clove(C),and nutmeg(C.N 0:0-Control 0%of Clove and Nutmeg;C.N 1:3-25%Clove and 75%Nutmeg;C.N 3:1-75%Clove and 25%Nutmeg;C.N 2:2-50%Clove and 50%Nutmeg;C.4-100%Clove;N4-100%)in *** results from the study indicated that the anaesthetic caused a substantial(p<0.05)modifications in the five antioxidants under *** highest deviations in the studied antioxidants were observed in the fish exposed to C4 combination of the anaesthetics and the lowest in the *** results from this work therefore suggest that the anaesthetics can alter antioxidants levels in the fish which was more noticeable in the fish exposed to C.N 3:1-75%Clove and 25%Nutmeg;C.N 2:2-50%Clove and 50%Nutmeg;C.4-100%Clove;N4-100%.Hence fish farmers and scientists are advised to take caution when combining these plant extracts for use in aquaculture.

The aim of this study is to review clinical case ascites and the use of ultrasound for the detection/classification of free intra-peritoneal fluid. Current therapeutic modality is in support of ultrasound guided paracentesis/thoracocentesis as a multidisciplinary procedure for ascitic reduction. Post-surgical free intra-peritoneal fluid is a common iatrogenic complication. We present ascitic cases of diseased conditions, questionable origins (in females) following hernia reduction and laparoscopic procedures to evaluate ascitic etiology through ultrasound. Average attenuation and quadrant sum of largest fluid pocket ultrasound (frozen) images were measured. 12 patients with free intra-peritoneal fluid had identifiable anatomical organs: liver, kidneys, urinary bladder and bowel loops. The size of maximal pocket of ascitic fluid in ill-patients was 1210/300 mm2, while fluid in subjects with non-traumatic injury was clear (free of striations) and appeared less dense.

The role of ultrasonography as a routine investigative test for diagnosing testicular pathologies (in-utero and postnatally) cannot be overemphasized. Undescended (cryptorchid) testis according to literature is prone to neoplastic transformation. Determination of fetal gender in-utero by ultrasound allows for sex determination albeit;its full ethical implication should be considered. 3D ultrasonography is affordable, ubiquitous, reproducible and ensures rapid evaluation of a wide array of testicular pathologies, early (coincidental) diagnosis is important to avoid complications (such as torsion, bleeding or malignant-mass-formation) thus;sonar imaging features as an indispensable tool. The case aims to document and highlight accidental detection (at 31 weeks gestational age) and expunge on the accuracy of ultrasonography in diagnosing cryptorchidism. There is sparse (Nigerian) literature on Undescended Fetal Testis (UDFT). This report used antenatal imaging as a clear descriptive evidence of faulty testicular descent with detailed examination of the fetal genitalia. Ultrasound examination during the 3rd semester allows for accurate cryptorchid diagnosis (prenataly).

Wetlands are classified as essential and valuable components of the ecosystem. Wetlands are significant for ecosystem services such as nutrient cycles, soil formation and water treatment. Nearly half of the world’s wetlands have vanished in the last century because of anthropogenic activities, agricultural land use, and urban development, one of such places that are faced with the challenges of sustainability is the wetland habitats. This study aimed at assessing the spatial temporal characteristics of wetlands ecosystem in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria from 1986-2016. The secondary data include raw satellite imageries obtained from the archive of the United States Geological Survey and Earth Explorer. The data set includes a notable period of four years landsat images for, 1986, 1996, 2006 and 2016. The maps were projected using Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection system and datum WGS 84 of zone 32. Satellite images of the study area were acquired from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS uses the LandSat5 Thematic Mapper (TM) Landsat7 Thematic Mapper, Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+), Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) and Landsa8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) to generate high resolution images that are useful for this type of study. The satellite imageries were also analyzed using GIS and Remote Sensing techniques by computing of Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) values for the entire study area by conversion of spectral reflectance values into NDVI values. The satellite images covering the area were acquired and analyzed using ArcGIS10.6. A total area of 25,053.93 (km2) was delineated in the study area. After processing the imagery, five land use/land cover (LULC) classes were developed in ArcGIS environment, such as Built-up area, Fallow land, Vegetation, Wetland and Waterbody.
