Objective:The analysis of changing definitions and perspectives of violating behaviors within cultural contexts will inform the responses and interventions that will mostly reduce the occurrences of family ***:This study used focus group discussions of purposively selected participants to generate data that were analyzed using content with themes of definition,perspectives,prevalent forms,persons mostly affected,perpetrators,and management strategies among the Yoruba ***:There were multiple words and descriptions in the local Yoruba language for abuse and violence,but no single word for either of the two *** forms of family violence identified were verbal assaults from parents to children,among couples,siblings,physical assault of children by parents,physical assault of parents by children,neglect of children,parents,spouses mostly wives,sexual harassment,and sexual *** of wives and children was perceived to be increasing,occurring in one in four *** harassment and sexual violence were perceived to be rare,but the latter not an issue in marriage.A variant of sexual“touching”said to be tolerated with unmarried young people was identified as common among this ethnic *** and gender were dominant factors in the use of common forms of *** approaches were methods of management of family violence but perceived ***:This study concluded that family violence is a common phenomenon occurring among family ***,formal acceptable interventions that will be appropriate for this ethnic subgroup are required.

Drying behaviour of Jew’s mallow leaves using an oven dryer was *** influence of drying temperatures(50,60 and 70C)on moisture content of the leaves at stable air velocity was *** drying models,including,simple exponential,Page,Two-term exponential,Logarithmic,and Wang and Singh were fitted to drying ***-term exponential model adequately express the drying behaviour of Jew’s mallow *** moisture diffusivity of Jew’s mallow leaves ranged from 8.18×10^-8 to 1.13×10^-7m^2/*** of the computed effective diffusivity on oven temperature was *** energy required for oven drying of Jew’s mallow leaves was found to be 14.84 kJ/*** L^*,a^*,b^*,DE,a^*/b^*colour characteristics of the dried leaves range from 31.8 to 32.87,-3.73 to-4.37,13.6 to 16.47,69.00 to 69.73,and-0.26 to-0.34 *** drying conditions of 50℃150 min and 70℃90min resulted to dried leaves with desirable colour characteristics.

This study investigates the microwave drying kinetics of thin layer Mabonde banana variety(MBV)at power levels between 100 and 300 *** mathematical drying models:Wang and Singh,Verma,Two-term,Page,Two term exponential,and Logarithmic models were fitted to experimental drying data obtained from the *** statistical consistency of the models was determined using statistical parameters including coefficient of determination,mean bias error,root mean square error,and reduced Chi *** migration from banana slices was described using the Fick’s diffusion *** effective diffusivity was *** results indicated that drying took place largely in the falling rate *** time required to reduce the moisture of banana to a certain level was dependent on the microwave output,being the longest at 100 W and shortest at 300 *** effective moisture diffusivity increased with increasing microwave power with values at 4.89×10^(-10),1.09×10^(-9) and 1.69×10^(-9) m^(2)/s at 100,200,and 300 W,*** Wang and Singh model gave the best results for the description of thin layer drying of MBV.

Effects of the substitution of cow’s milk with soymilk on the micronutrients,microbial,and sensory qualities of yoghurt

The consumption of imported dairy products is high especially in developing countries including Nigeria where little or no milk is produced locally which makes the products expensive,out of reach to common consumers and also inconvenient for lactose intolerance and ***,as plant-based milk was substituted for cow’s milk in parts and in whole for the production of yoghurt and the effect of substitution was evaluated on the minerals,vitamins,microbial,and sensory properties of the products using the established *** differences(p<0.05)exits among the yoghurt samples in the micronutrient *** soymilk substitution produced yoghurts with trace/macro mineral contents’range of 0.14–28.50 mg/100 g and vitamin contents(ranged 0.02–0.43 mg/100 g)that were of comparable range of values with the yoghurt made with 100%cow’s milk(0.21–29.60 mg/100 g minerals and 0.05–0.58 mg/100 g vitamins).Generally,no significant difference(p<0.05)was observed in most of the sensory attributes evaluated(range 8.00–8.01)in the entire samples(except in the 100%soymilk yoghurt).The microbial analysis proved the safety of the entire products for *** showed the positive effect of substituting soymilk for cow’s milk at all the levels used,thus,the lactose intolerance and vegans can find alternative to dairy yoghurt in the 100%soymilk substitution and enjoy the functional health benefits of ***,the total dependence on importation of dairy milk and cost of production of composited milk yoghurt could be reduced to improve the nation’s economy and make the product economically accessible to common man.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is frequently associated with atherosclerosis with changes in the thickness of the intima-media of carotid arteries which causes increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in this group of patients. The carotid artery reflects the degree of atherosclerosis in the various vessels especially coronary arteries. Measurement of the carotid artery thickness with real time, relatively cheap and non-invasive ultrasonography method is used in monitoring atherosclerotic disease progression and response to treatment. This study is aimed at ultrasonographic evaluation of the carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) in adult Type 2 Diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic healthy controls matched for age, gender and body mass index (BMI). And to also determine its association if any with selected clinical factors among a native Black African population. Methodology: This was a prospective case control study involving 54 adult type 2 diabetics and 54 adult non-diabetic controls. CIMT was measured at 3 segments of the extracranial carotid arteries by a 7.5 - 10 MHz linear transducer of a portable Mindray M5 ultrasound machine. Results: Among the native black African population studied, there was significant difference in CIMT of adult type 2 diabetics compared to healthy non-diabetics adults (p value = 0.012 and 0.001 on the right and left respectively). The mean carotid intima-media thickness in diabetics was 0.81 mm and 0.85 mm, while in non-diabetics it was 0.74 mm and 0.75 mm on the right and left respectively. The presence of diabetes showed independent positive correlation with CIMT (beta: 0.24, p value = 0.004). Age (beta: 0.30, p value = 0.001) and plasma cholesterol level (beta: 0.30, p value = 0.013) also had positive correlation with CIMT. Laboratory investigations were conducted to study strength characteristics of silt loam soil of Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, under uni-axial compression tests. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of applied pressure and moisture content on strength indices such as bulk density, penetration resistance and shear strength of the soil and to develop relationships between the strength indices for predictive purposes necessary in soil management. The compression was carried out at different moisture contents determined according to the consistency limits of the soil. The applied pressure ranged from 75 to 600 kPa. Values of bulk density, penetration resistance and shear strength increased with increase in moisture content up to peak values after which the values decreased with further increase in moisture content. Regression models were used to describe the trends in the results for the soil. Results also showed that bulk density and soil strength normally regarded as indicators of soil quality are affected by moisture content and applied pressure and that these properties can be predicted using the models generated from the study.

Background:The important roles of liver and kidney in the elimination of injurious chemicals make them highly susceptible to the noxious activities of various toxicants including cobalt chloride(CoCl_(2)).This study was designed to investigate the role of glycine in the mitigation of hepato-renal toxicities associated with CoCl_(2)***:Forty-two(42)male rats were grouped as Control;(CoCl_(2);300 ppm);CoCl_(2)+Glycine(50 mg/kg);CoCl_(2)+Glycine(100 mg/kg);Glycine(50 mg/kg);and Glycine(100 mg/kg).The markers of hepatic and renal damage,oxidative stress,the antioxidant defense system,histopathology,and immunohistochemical localization of neutrophil gelatinase associated lipocalin(NGAL)and renal podocin were ***:Glycine significantly reduced the markers of oxidative stress(malondialdehyde content and H_(2)O_(2) generation),liver function tests(ALT,AST,and ALP),markers of renal function(creatinine and BUN),and decreased the expression of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin(NGAL)and podocin compared with rats exposed to CoCl_(2)toxicity without glycine *** lesions including patchy tubular epithelial necrosis,tubular epithelial degeneration and periglomerular inflammation in renal tissues,and severe portal hepatocellular necrosis,inflammation,and duct hyperplasia were observed in hepatic tissues of rats exposed to CoCl_(2)toxicity,but were mild to absent in glycine-treated ***:The results of this study clearly demonstrate protective effects of glycine against CoCl_(2)-induced tissue injuries and derangement of physiological activities of the hepatic and renal systems in *** protective effects are mediated via augmentation of total antioxidant capacity and upregulation of NGAL and podocin expression.
