Multi-axial perfectly matched layer(M-PML),known to have lost the perfect-matching property owing to multi-axial coordinate stretching,has been numerically validated to be long-time stable and it is thus used extensively in linear anisotropic wave simulation and in isotropic cases where the PML becomes *** are concerned with the construction of the M-PML for anisotropic wave simulation based on a second order wave equation implemented with the displacement-based numerical *** address the benefit of the incorrect chain rule,which is implicitly adopted in the previous derivation of the *** show that using the frequency-shifted stretching function improves the absorbing efficiency of the M-PML for near-grazing incident ***,through multi-axial complex-coordinate stretching the second order anisotropic wave equation in a weak form,we derive a time-domain multi-axial unsplit frequency-shifted PML(M-UFSPML)using the frequency-shifted stretching function and the incorrect chain rule.A new approach is provided to reduce the number of memory variables needed for computing convolution terms in the *** obtained M-UFSPML is well suited for implementation with a finite element or the spectral element *** providing several typical examples,we numerically verify the accuracy and long-time stability of the implementation of our M-UFSPML by utilizing the Legendre spectral element method.

NATO standards"AEP-2920 Procedures for the Evaluation and Classification of Personal Armor"and NIJ Standard-0101.06,indicate the method to statistically assess the resistance of personal ballistic protection *** be validated and accepted through these procedures,a personal ballistic protection material should withstand an impact of a specific projectile with a probability of a partial penetration confidence level higher than 90%.The present study introduces an energy equilibrium method to assess the confidence level for the probability of partial penetration of ductile and brittle *** experiments performed in the Ballistics laboratory of the Royal Military Academy in Belgium,use a modified pendulum method that allowed the quantification of the energy balance before and after the ballistic *** results were then compared with the ones obtained using the method specified by the NATO standard and NIJ 0101.06,mentioned *** outcome of this comparison shows the tendency of the values obtained by the pendulum method to faithfully follow the values obtained according to NATO and NIJ *** presented method is not based on statistical estimations,but instead,an exact method,of computing the energy absorbed by the tested *** is an advantage for the cases when the material to be evaluated is expensive or it is in the development phase and mass production is not possible.

Introduction: Pre-eclampsia is a complication of pregnancy that generally occurs in the third trimester. It is associated with a maternal and foetal mortality rate of around 27%. In view of the grim picture painted by this condition for both mother and newborn, studies have been carried out into the early detection of patients at risk of developing pre-eclampsia. These make it possible to introduce pregnancy-specific monitoring and preventive strategies to reduce the incidence of the condition. Objective: To establish the link between placental ultrasound characteristics and the onset of pre-eclampsia. Methodology: A multicentre prospective cohort study was conducted in two hospitals in Yaoundé, namely the Yaoundé Gynaecological Obstetrics and Paediatrics Hospital and the Nkolndongo Health and Social Animation Centre, in the gynaecology and radiology departments over a period of 11 months, from October 2022 to August 2023. It included pregnant women who had undergone obstetric ultrasound between 12 and 18 weeks’ gestation. In addition to routine obstetric ultrasound, we performed obstetric Doppler measurements in these patients. The resistance index of the left and right uterine arteries, the umbilical artery and the placental volume were the characteristics sought. At the end of this examination, two groups were formed: cases (pathological Doppler group) and controls (normal Doppler group). Blood pressure and urine dipstick were taken at each antenatal visit until delivery, then during the immediate postpartum period and finally at 7 days, 21 days and 42 days after delivery. Results: Sixty-seven (67) patients were included. Of these, 35 (47.8%) had pathological Dopplers. Sixteen patients had arterial hypertension associated with proteinuria and were therefore labelled as pre-eclampsia (PE). This gives a prevalence of 23.9%. The paper presents a novel demand-responsive control strategy to be equipped centrally at the district level for district heating *** demand-responsive feature was maintained as to both the direct and the indirect substation configurations(by basing on their rating measures)in order to achieve lowest possible return temper-ature degrees from the end-user *** than the traditional weather-compensation based supply temperature resetting,the new control strategy was formulated to adjust the supply temperature at the district level as to the cooling performance at the end-user *** different simulations were carried out in order to quantify the benefits of the novel control strategy as compared to the traditional weather-compensation,equipped both at the substation level and the district *** results obtained showed that the new control strategy,when considering the electricity loss at the heat production plant,shows superiority when compared to other control strategies.

Wild animals use their habitat according to ecological pressures such as predation, resource availability or tempera- ture, yet little is known about how individuals use their environment in semi free-ranging conditions. We assessed whether a semi-free ranging group of Tonkean macaques Macaca tonkeana used its wooded parkland in a heterogeneous way. GIS and GPS were used to determine whether individuals adjusted their behaviors according to variation in environmental constraints over time of day and the course of a year. We demonstrated that social and resting activities occurred in high altitude areas and areas with a high density of bushes, whereas the group foraged in areas where the density of bushes and grass was low. In general, the animals used areas exposed to the sun that were not on a slope. Semi-free ranging Tonkean macaques seemed to behave like their wild counterparts in terms of activity budget, land use per activity and thermoregulation

Abstract Accurate simulation of seismic wave propaga- tion in complex geological structures is of particular interest nowadays. However conventional methods may fail to simulate realistic wavefields in environments with great and rapid structural changes, due for instance to the presence of shadow zones, diffractions and/or edge effects. Different methods, developed to improve seismic model- ing, are typically tested on synthetic configurations against analytical solutions for simple canonical problems or ref- erence methods, or via direct comparison with real data acquired in situ. Such approaches have limitations,especially if the propagation occurs in a complex envi- ronment with strong-contrast reflectors and surface irreg- ularities, as it can be difficult to determine the method which gives the best approximation of the ＂real＂ solution, or to interpret the results obtained without an a priori knowledge of the geologic environment. An alternative approach for seismics consists in comparing the synthetic data with high-quality data collected in laboratory experi- ments under controlled conditions for a known configuration. In contrast with numerical experiments, laboratory data possess many of the characteristics of field data, as real waves propagate through models with no numerical approximations. We thus present a comparison of laboratory-scaled measurements of 3D zero-offset wave reflection of broadband pulses from a strong topographic environment immersed in a water tank with numerical data simulated by means of a spectral-element method and a discretized Kirchhoff integral method. The results indicate a good quantitative fit in terms of time arrivals and acceptable fit in amplitudes for all datasets.

In this paper,we present the experimental results for integrated photonic devices optimized with an energyconstrained inverse design *** this constraint is applied,optimizations are directed to solutions that contain the optical field inside the waveguide core medium,leading to more robust designs with relatively larger minimum feature *** optimize three components:a mode converter(MC),a 1310 nm/1550 nm wavelength duplexer,and a three-channel C-band wavelength demultiplexer for coarse wavelength division multiplexing(CWDM)application with 50 nm channel *** energy constraint leads to nearly binarized structures without applying independent binarization *** also reduces the appearance of small *** the MC,well-binarized design,improved insertion loss,and cross talk are obtained as a ***,the proposed constraint improves the robustness to fabrication imperfections as shown in the duplexer *** energy constraint optimization,the corresponding spectrum shifts for the duplexer under±10 nm dimensional variations are reduced from 105 nm to 55 nm and from 72 nm to 60 nm for the 1310 nm and 1550 nm channel,*** the CWDM demultiplexer,robustness toward±10 nm fabrication error is improved by a factor of *** introduction of the energy constraint into topological optimization demonstrates computational gain with better-performing designs.

This paper reveals that the implementation of inclusive education is an unfinished challenge,both within the system and for individual *** process of changing practices,by continually questioning the school’s responsibility for the(re)production of inequalities,exclusion,and unequal social relations,is riddled with obstacles,unpredictable situations,and strong *** particular,the researchers point out that many systemic mechanisms of school culture contribute to replicating and reifying hierarchical school experiences and exacerbating processes of institutional discrimination against immigrant backgrounds and/or racialized *** empirical research presented also highlights the school staff’s deficit thinking toward immigrant students and their *** results show that staff tend to use linguistic and cultural gaps between students and the school system to explain academic *** that as it may,the researchers as well as the school actors and students interviewed in this paper suggest multiple ways to improve inclusion in the school context,stressing the importance of giving voice to the various actors in order to move toward institutional transformation.
