Introduction: Birth spacing to prevent closely-spaced pregnancies, which are a source of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, is not always respected by our women, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). The objective was to study the factors associated with closely-spaced pregnancies among women followed at the Departmental Hospital Center du Zou et du Colline (DHC/Z-C) in 2022. Study Method: This was a descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study with prospective data collection from 20 May to 30 June 2022. Results: At the end of the study, 83 of the 117 women surveyed had close pregnancies, a frequency of 70.94%. They had an average age of 27.0 ± 6.3 years and were of Fon ethnicity and related in 91.57% of cases. The majority were married (96.60%). The factors significantly associated with these closely spaced pregnancies were age between 25 and 30 years, household occupation, age at first birth, age at marriage, women’s perception of contraceptive method (CM), women’s knowledge of the existence of a center providing family planning services and non-use of MC. Conclusion: Close pregnancies are still very common in the commune of Abomey. It is therefore important to increase the use of contraceptive methods in this part of the country.

Introduction: Maternal mortality is a robust indicator of human development. Most of it occurs in developing countries. Objectives: This study aims to determine the factors associated with maternal mortality in Gynecology and Obstetrics Department of Borgou Departmental University Hospital Center (CHUD-B). Study method: Our study took place at Gynecology and Obstetrics Department in Borgou Departmental University Hospital Center. This was a descriptive and analytical case-control study, covering a period of 7 years from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2018. Background: The prevalence of congenital malaria is getting more and more significant in Sub-Saharan Africa where is a malaria-endemic area. This study aimed to identify the clinical and therapeutic features as well as the outcome of congenital malaria in CHUD-B in 2015. Method: It was a cohort and descriptive study with analytical purpose, carried out in the Mother and Child Department which includes the Gynecology & Obstetrics and Pediatric Unit of CHUD-B. The study target population consisted of all the infants born in the CHUD-B as well as their mothers. The main variable was the presence of congenital malaria. The independent variables were those related to clinical, therapeutic features and outcome. Results: In the study, among the 300 newborns registered, 57 carried congenital malaria i.e. a prevalence of 19%. 171 (57.0%) of them were males versus 129 (43.0%) females. Among the 281 mothers involved, 48 presented with malaria in pregnancy i.e. a prevalence of 17.0%. At the end of this research work, the factors associated with congenital malaria were fever in the 3rd quarter and malaria in pregnancy in the mother. Conclusion: Nearly one out of five infants born in the CHUD-B was carrier of congenital malaria and approximately one out six mothers presented with malaria detection during pregnancy. A method based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) should be implemented during the diagnosis in order to confirm malaria cases among both newborns and mothers.

Background: Every minute a child dies from malaria in Sub-Saharan Africa. Despite this high infant and child mortality associated with malaria, congenital malaria is still not adequately understood as regarding its frequency, severity and management. The objective of this research work was to determine the frequency and identify the socio-demographic factors associated with the onset of congenital malaria at the gynecological and pediatric units of the Borgou Regional Teaching Hospital (CHUD-B) in Benin in 2015. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional survey with analytical purpose, based on exhaustive census performed from April to July 2015 on newborns delivered at CHUD-B and their mothers. The dependent variable was the presence of congenital malaria and the independent variables were socio-demographic characteristics. The data were processed and analyzed using Epi Info software version 7.0 with a significant threshold of 0.05. Findings: The frequency of congenital malaria in newborns was 19%. No sociodemographic factor was associated with congenital malaria. Conclusion: Nearly one in five newborns delivered at CHUD-B had congenital malaria. Due to malaria’s contribution to perinatal morbidity and mortality and subsequent receptivity of child victims to malaria, a longer study covering a whole year and focused on the determinants of congenital malaria should be carried out.

Emergency Obstetric Care in Parakou: Availability in Maternity Hospitals, Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Providers

Objective: To evaluate the availability of emergency obstetric care (EmOC) in maternity hospitals in Parakou as well as the knowledge, attitudes and practices of EmOC providers in 2017. Material and method: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional analytical study conducted in the maternity wards of public and private health facilities in Parakou and the health care providers of the maternity wards. Epi Data software version 3.1, Epi Info version 7.2 and EXCEL 2007 were used for data processing. Results: A total of 17 maternity homes and 91 providers participated in the study. All 7 basic functions (BEmOC) were available in 23.53% of these maternities. Providers’ knowledge of EmOC was good at 6.59%, average at 15.38%, insufficient at 24.18% and bad at 53.85%. As for the attitudes, they were just in 3.30%, approximate in 36.26%, wrong in 26.37% and harmful in 34.07%. Regarding the practices of these providers, they were adequate in 6.59%, inadequate in 38.46% and harmful in 54.95%. The global knowledge, attitudes and practices (CAP) score is acceptable in the majority of providers (57.14%). It is poor in 38.46% and good in 4.40%. Conclusion: In Parakou, the availability of emergency obstetric care (EmOC) contrasts with the level of knowledge, attitudes and practices of providers who require training in EmOC.

Objective: To study the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding contraception among young people in the Burkinabè’s family well-being association for youth listening center in Bobo-Dioulasso city. Methods: This was a survey of 635 clients in the youth listening’s center of Bobo-Dioulasso city, Burkina Faso. These clients were gradually included by random choice from January 15 to April 15, 2018. The data were collected by self-administered written questionnaire under the supervision of an investigator and after a free and informed verbal agreement of the participant. The analysis was done using the software Epi info version 7.***.1.0. Results: The average age of the respondents was 20.62 years. Female respondents were more numerous, 508 (80%). Contraceptive methods were known by 98.12% of respondents and 61.42% said they were always using them. Two-thirds of clients (67%) cited at least two benefits of contraceptive methods which were correct. Condoms were the best-known method (92.60%) and also the most used (92.56%). But emergency contraception was known by 30.71% of participants. Young people who were already sexually active accounted for 73.54% of the sample with a mean age at their first sexual intercourse of 18.42 years. Conclusion: The majority of respondents knew contraceptive methods. However, risky sexual behaviors and misconceptions about contraception remain. The setting up of family planning services within schools and the teaching of a reproductive health module in all secondary schools will contribute to improve their sexual and reproductive health.

Background: Dysmenorrhea is a common symptom of gynecology that causes social and economic disruption in the lives of women who suffer from it. But many of them consider it inevitable and do not consult a health worker. Knowing the factors associated with this condition could help reduce its frequency and impact. Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with dysmenorrhea in Benin in 2017. Method: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study from 17 April to 17 May 2017. It involved 822 women aged 15 to 44 selected by a cluster sampling technique. Information on socio-demographic characteristics, functional signs, and medical care was collected using questionnaires. Introduction: Misoprostol is a molecule used for inducing labor these days in order to reduce perinatal morbidity and mortality. This study aimed at appreciating maternal and fetal prognosis after induction of labor on indication for delivery with misoprostol on live fetus at CHUD/B in 2016. Patients and Method: It was an observational case-control type study with prospective data collection carried out in the gynecology and obstetrics department of CHUD/B. Were included, 37 WA healthy pregnant women whose Bishop score was less than 6. Their fetal heart rate and their pelvis were normal. Fisher chi-2 test was used and the significance threshold of different associations was 5%. Results: In the study, 99 women involved were divided into 33 cases and 66 case-controls. The average age of cases was 29.70 ± 5.03 years old with extremes of 20 and 40 years and that of case-controls was 29.44 ± 4.96 years with extremes of 21 and 40 years. Out of the 1195 deliveries which took place in the gynecology and obstetrics department of CHUD/B, 33 inductions of labor on full-term live fetuses with misoprostol were performed that is to say a frequency of 2.76%. The factors associated with maternal and fetal prognosis were profession, mode of admission, Bishop score with respectively p-values of 0.049, 0.00005, 0.00001. Conclusion: The use of misoprostol seems beneficial as regards maternal and fetal prognoses in our practice at a low cost.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy (HDP) and to determine the factors associated with them in the city of Parakou in Benin, a West African country. Method: It has been a descriptive cross-sectional study with a prospective collection of data using a questionnaire in prenatal consultation in the health center of Parakou’s commune for 4 months (May 1 to August 31, 2019). Result: A proportion of 8.2% (55/671) of the pregnancy had the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The Gestational HyperTension was the most common type of arterial hypertension (AHT) with a proportion of 49.1%. The factors associated with HDP were the age of 30 to 34 (OR: 11.9;95% CI: 1.54 - 92.29;p = 0.0346), the family history of Arterial HyperTension (AHT) (OR: 1.5;95% CI: 1.03 - 4.66;p = 0.0481), the BMI > 30 (OR:14.2;95% IC: 7.02 - 28.69;p = 0.0235), being married or in a common-law relationship (OR = 2.51;95% CI: 1.30 - 4.86;p = 0.0412), the stress (OR: 2.0;95% CI:1.09 - 3.32;p = 0.0209), the history of HDP (OR: 9.0;95% CI: 2.53 - 15.23;p are common in Parakou. As in other countries of West Africa, Benin has a low rate of MCM utilization. The factors which lead to this low rate of use vary from one country to another. Purpose: The purpose of this work was to determine the factors associated with the use of modern contraceptive method (MCM) by women of childbearing age (WCBA) in Parakou in 2017. Materials and Methods: It was a cross-sectional and descriptive study with an analytical purpose among WCBA selected in households of the municipality of Parakou after a 2-degree cluster survey. Results: The WCBA’s average age was 29 ± 5.6 years old with extremes of 15 and 46 years. The modern contraceptive prevalence was 14.74%. Among WCBA, 57.14% had an average level of knowledge. The media were the main source of information (75.84%). Among them 34.39% never discussed the matter with their spouse;the latter were not in favor of contraception. The educational level, the perception of woman, the spouse’s favorable opinion, the discussion with the spouse, the level of knowledge of MCM and the knowledge of the existence of FP service were significantly associated with the use of MCM with p = 0.0000 after multivariate analysis. Conclusion: The level of MCM use still remains low. Any effort to increase the modern contraceptive prevalence should take into account its associated factors in order to optimize the use of MCM in the municipality of Parakou in 2017.
