Occupational Exposure to Particulate Matter from b.omass Smoke and Its Relationship to Respiratory Symptoms and Pulmonary Function among Rural Women Involved in Cassava Processing in Nigeria

b.ckground: Cassava processing is an important source of livelihood for many rural women and involves prolonged exposure to b.omass smoke. The impact of this exposure on respiratory health of these women has not b.en explored. We aimed to compare the frequency of respiratory symptoms and pulmonary function among cassava processing women to that of petty traders as well as the levels of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 at the workplaces of these women. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional design. Questionnaire was administered;spirometry was performed;PM2.5 and PM10 were sampled. Descriptive statistics were used and multiple logistic regressions were performed to assess the relationship b.tween predictors and outcome variab.es. Results: 528 non-smoking women were recruited (264 cassava processors and 264 petty traders). The women were matched b. b.seline parameters. PM2.5 levels at the cassava processing plants were (50 ± 10.0 μg/m3) while the levels at the petty traders’ stalls were 13.0 ± 10.0 μg/m3 (P 2.5, having more respiratory symptoms, lower pulmonary function parameters and higher frequency of ob.tructive pulmonary defect compared to women not occupationally exposed to b.omass. Use of more efficient fuel in cassava processing and personal protective equipment may limit the harmful health effects of b.omass among these vulnerab.e women.

Caregivers’ Perception of Unintentional Child and Adolescent Injuries in Enugu, Nigeria

b.ckground: Injury is an increasing cause of childhood morb.dity and mortality glob.lly. Purpose: The ob.ective of the study was to evaluate caregivers’ perception of unintentional child and adolescent injuries in Enugu. Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. Data were collected from caregivers of children attending the children’s outpatients’ unit of the hospital during the period of the study, who were selected consecutively using semi-structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Data were analysed using SPSS version 20.0. The level of statistical significance was set at p Results: A total of 728 caregiver-child pairs were interviewed, out of which 526 (72.3%) recalled history of injuries in their wards within the past 12months. Most of the injuries occurred at home (334;63.5%), in males 329 (62.5%), and in the 1 - 4 years age group 239 (45.4%). On further analysis, age of the child, male sex, residence in rural area and stage of child’s development significantly predicted the risk of having an unintentional injury. Majority of the interviewees had heard of first aid (432;59.3%) though only a few 23 (5.4%) actually owned well equipped first aid b.xes. Most of the respondents felt that injuries in children were preventab.e, 429 (58.9%). However, a good numb.r agreed that they needed clear education on preventive measures of childhood injuries, 485 (66.6%). Conclusion: Unintentional injuries occur commonly in children and are largely preventab.e. Appropriate health and environmental education is needed to reduce the rising incidence of injuries in children in our setting.

Palynomorph assemb.age b.ozonation of Paleogene strata in b.nde–Umuahia Area,Niger Delta b.sin, southeastern Nigeria

Cenozoic sediments form extensive outcrops in the Niger Delta b.sin. Detailed palynostratigraphic study was undertaken across Paleogene sequences exposed in b.nde–Umuahia Area in up-dip sectors of the Niger Delta b.sin, southeastern Nigeria, to estab.ish different palynomorphs assemb.age zones, with their corresponding *** analysis was carried out on 27 selected outcrop samples, using the conventional maceration technique for recovering acid-insolub.e organic-walled microfossils from sediments. Three Cenozoic lithostratigraphic units, including Imo Formation, Ameki Formation, and Ogwashi Formation, are exposed in the study area. Lithologies are sandstone, carb.naceous shale, mudstone, limestone, and the lignite. A total of 65 species of sporomorphs and 51 dinoflagellate cysts were identified. The recovered spores and pollen grains were used to estab.ish six informal palynomorph assemb.age zones, lab.led as zone A – zone F, b.sed on the first and the last occurrences of two or more species. These palynomorph assemb.age zones include:(1) zone A — middle Paleocene Scab.atriporites simpliformis–b.mb.cidites annae zone;(2) zone b.— late Paleocene Foveotricolporites crassiexinus–Mauritidiites crassiexinus zone;(3) zone C — early Eocene Striatopollis catatumb.s–Momipites africanus zone;(4) zone D — middle Eocene Margocolporites umuahiaensis–Gemmastephanocolporites b.evicolpites zone;(5)zone E — late Eocene Cicatricosisporites dorogensis–Perfotricolpites nigerianus zone;and,(6) zone F — Oligocene–early Miocene Verrucatosporites usmensis–Magnastriatites howardii zone. The erected palynozones were correlated and compared with existing b.ozones in sub.urface, down-dip sectors of the Niger Delta b.sin, with pantropical palynological zones in tropical areas of Africa, and with palynofloral provinces of northern South America. A comparison of palynozones studied in southeastern Nigeria with other international palynozones, in this study, will assist in estab.ishing
