The clinical impact of bacterial biofilms

Bacteria survive in nature by forming biofilms on surfaces and probably most, if not all, bacteria （and fungi） are capable of forming biofilms. A biofilm is a structured consortium of bacteria embedded in a self-produced polymer matrix consisting of polysaccharide, protein and extracellular DNA. Bacterial biofilms are resistant to antibiotics, disinfectant chemicals and to phagocytosis and other components of the innate and adaptive inflammatory defense system of the body. It is known, for example, that persistence of staphylococcal infections related to foreign bodies is due to biofilm formation. Likewise, chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients are caused by biofilm growing mucoid strains. Gradients of nutrients and oxygen exist from the top to the bottom of biofilms and the bacterial cells located in nutrient poor areas have decreased metabolic activity and increased doubling times. These more or less dormant cells are therefore responsible for some of the tolerance to antibiotics. Biofilm growth is associated with an increased level of mutations. Bacteria in biofilms communicate by means of molecules, which activates certain genes responsible for production of virulence factors and, to some extent, biofilm structure. This phenomenon is called quorum sensing and depends upon the concentration of the quorum sensing molecules in a certain niche, which depends on the number of the bacteria. Biofilms can be prevented by antibiotic prophylaxis or early aggressive antibiotic therapy and they can be treated by chronic suppressive antibiotic therapy. Promising strategies may include the use of compounds which can dissolve the biofilm matrix and quorum sensing inhibitors, which increases biofilm susceptibility to antibiotics and phagocytosis.

Assessment of recharge capacity potential of groundwater using comparative multi-criteria decision analysis approaches

Groundwater resources have always been some of the most valuable resources of human *** changes and ever-increasing water demands registered in the last century have led to diminishing levels of groundwater reserves,as well as reduced recharging ***,in order to use groundwater aquifers in a sustainable manner,it is required to identify areas with higher replenishing *** current study addresses the issue of generating a map for identifying differently ranked groundwater recharging potential values,in the aquifers of the Moldavian Plain region,*** the purpose of conducting the analysis,maps were created through GIS based multi-criteria Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP)and Catastrophe Theory(CT),with seven relevant,thematic,spatial layers:precipitation distribution,lithological strata,soil texture,declivity,drainage density,land use and the distribution of groundwater level *** results of the two methods of analysis are *** differences are of maximum 3%,in the case of extreme classes(very bad and very good)and in the case of middle classes the deviation is not greater than 0.4%.Following the validation of the results generated by the two methods that were applied,it was observed that the predictions offered by CT are more *** aspect can be based on the fact that the main factors that contribute to the prediction are *** type of workflow emphasizes the necessity of implementing appropriate groundwater management plans for mitigating reservoir scarcity/depletion,and recommending sustainable solutions for future groundwater exploitation practices.

Classes of Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay Squarefree Monomial Ideals

We compute the minimal primary decomposition for completely squarefree lexsegment ideals. We show that critical squarefree monomial ideals are sequentially Cohen- Macaulay. As an application, we give a complete characterization of the completely square- free lexsegment ideals which are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and we also derive formulas for some homological invariants of this class of ideals.

We show that the subordination induced by a convolution semigroup(subordination in the sense of Bochner)of a C0-semigroup of sub-Markovian operators on an Lpspace is actually associated to the subordination of a right(Markov)*** a consequence,we solve the martingale problem associate with the Lp-infinitesimal generator of the subordinate *** also prove quasi continuity properties for the elements of the domain of the Lp-generator of the subordinate *** turns out that an enlargement of the base space is necessary.A main step in the proof is the preservation under such a subordination of the property of a Markov process to be a Borel right *** use several analytic and probabilistic potential theoretical tools.

Mathematical Analysis of a Chemotaxis-Type Model of Soil Carbon Dynamic

The goal of this paper is to study the mathematical properties of a new model of soil carbon dynamics which is a reaction-diffusion system with a chemotactic term, with the aim to account for the formation of soil aggregations in the bacterial and microorganism spatial organization(hot spot in soil). This is a spatial and chemotactic version of MOMOS(Modelling Organic changes by Micro-Organisms of Soil), a model recently introduced by M. Pansu and his group. The authors present here two forms of chemotactic terms, first a"classical" one and second a function which prevents the overcrowding of *** prove in each case the existence of a nonnegative global solution, and investigate its uniqueness and the existence of a global attractor for all the solutions.

AgSbTe_(2)-based ternary chalcogenides show excellent thermoelectric performance at low-and middletemperature ranges,yet their practical applications are greatly limited by their intrinsic poor thermodynamic *** this work,we demonstrate that AgSbTe_(2)-based ternary chalcogenides can be stabilized for service below their decomposition threshold.A series of AgxSb_(2-x)Te_(3-x)(x=1.0,0.9,0.8 and 0.7)samples have been prepared by the melt-quenching *** them,phase pure Ag0.9Sb1.1Te2.1 is verified by comprehensive structural characterizations from macroscale by X-ray diffraction to microscale by energy-dispersive spectroscopy and then to sub-nanometer scale by atom probe *** composition is further chosen for the stability *** decomposition threshold of Ag_(0.9)Sb_(1.1)Te_(2.1)appears around 473 *** this temperature,the chemical compositions and thermoelectric properties are barely changed even after 720 h annealing at 473 *** figure-of-merit(zT)value of Ag_(0.9)Sb_(1.1)Te_(2.1)below the decomposition threshold is very competitive for real applications even compared with Bi_(2)Te_(3-)based *** average zT of Ag_(0.9)Sb_(1.1)Te_(2.1)at 300e473 K reaches 0.84,which is higher than most other thermoelectric materials in a similar temperature range,promising applications in miniaturized refrigeration and power generation near room temperature.

Feedback Stabilization for a Scalar Conservation Law with PID Boundary Control

This paper deals with a scalar conservation law in 1-D space dimension, and in particular, the focus is on the stability analysis for such an equation. The problem of feedback stabilization under proportional-integral-derivative(PID for short) boundary control is addressed. In the proportional-integral(PI for short) controller case, by spectral analysis, the authors provide a complete characterization of the set of stabilizing feedback parameters, and determine the corresponding time delay stability interval. Moreover, the stability of the equilibrium is discussed by Lyapunov function techniques, and by this approach the exponential stability when a damping term is added to the classical PI controller scheme is proved. Also, based on Pontryagin results on stability for quasipolynomials, it is shown that the closed-loop system sub ject to PID control is always unstable.
