The Saltpond Basin,situated within the South Atlantic margin of Ghana,is a significant area for petro-leum exploration but has received relatively limited research attention.Previous studies have examined source rock com-position,but data on crude oil organic chemistry are lack-ing,hindering understanding of the basin’s petroleum system and evolution.To address this gap,we analyzed biomarkers and stable carbon-isotope ratios in Saltpond Basin crude oil using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and gas chromatography–isotope ratio mass spectrometry to eluci-date organic matter source,depositional environment,and thermal maturity.Findings were compared with oils from the West African segment of the South Atlantic margin,namely the Tano Basin and the Niger Delta Basin,to iden-tify potential correlations and gain insights into regional variations.Molecular and isotopic results unveiled a sig-nificant prevalence of organic matter derived from lower marine organisms.Patterns of organic matter deposition and preservation in Saltpond oil samples suggested a suboxic marine transitional environment,contradicting conventional understanding of terrestrial dominance in such settings.Moreover,the potential for degradation processes to obscure differentiation between terrestrial and marine organic mat-ter origins underscores the complex nature of organic mat-ter dynamics in transitional marine environments.Analysis of molecular thermal maturity indices suggested Saltpond oils were expelled from source rocks exhibiting thermal maturity at the early maturity stage.Correlation analysis unveiled genetic disparities among crude oils sourced from the Saltpond Basin and those from the Tano and Niger Delta Basin,primarily due to variations in source input and depo-sitional environment conditions.Saltpond oil exhibits lower terrestrial organic input than Tano Basin’s crude oils,which also have less terrestrial input than Niger Delta Basin crude oils.Additionally,its paleodepositional environment nota-bly differs from oils in the Tano B

The Paleocene mudrocks in Ghana’s Tano Basin have received limited attention despite ongoing efforts to explore hydrocarbon resources.A thorough geochemical analysis is imperative to assess these mudrocks’petroleum generation potential and formulate effective exploration strategies.In this study,a comprehensive geochemical analysis was carried out on ten Paleocene rock cuttings extracted from TP-1,a discovery well within the Tano Basin.Various analytical techniques,including total organic carbon(TOC)analysis,Rock–Eval pyrolysis,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry,and isotope ratio-mass spectrometry,were employed to elucidate their hydrocar-bon potential and organic facies.Theﬁndings in this study were subsequently compared to existing geochemical data on Paleocene source rocks in the South Atlantic marginal basins.The results indicated that the Paleocene samples have TOC content ranging from 0.68 to 2.93 wt%.The prevalent kerogen types identiﬁed in these samples were Type Ⅱ and Type Ⅲ.Molecular and isotope data suggest that the organic matter found in the Paleocene mudrocks can be traced back to land plants and lower aquatic organisms.These mudrocks were deposited in a transi-tional environment withﬂuctuating water salinity,charac-terized by sub-oxic redox conditions.Maturity indices,both bulk and molecular,indicated a spectrum of maturity levels within the Paleocene mudrocks,spanning from immature to marginally mature,with increasing maturity observed with greater depth.In comparison,the organic composition and depositional environments of Paleocene source rocks in the Tano Basin closely resemble those found in the Niger Delta Basin,Douala,and Kribi-Campo Basins,the Kwanza Formation in Angola,and certain Brazilian marginal basins.However,it is worth noting that Paleocene source rocks in some of the basins,such as the Niger Delta and Brazilian marginal basins,exhibit rela-tively higher thermal maturity levels compared to those observed in the current Paleocene samples from the Tano Basin.In conclusion,the compre

In this case report, we describe the anesthetic management for a 36-year-old G2P0010 at 36 weeks gestation with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type III who underwent an emergent caesarean section due to fetal footling breech position. The patient is a wheelchair-bound quadriplegic with kyphoscoliosis and a lack of cough reflex who required nasal continuous noninvasive ventilatory support (CNVS) for chronic hypercapnic respiratory failure. Surgery was done under general anesthesia due to its emergent nature, and the patient was successfully extubated and transitioned to nasal CNVS in the operating room at the end of the case. Postoperative care was provided in the medical intensive care unit for three days without complication and the patient was discharged home uneventfully.

Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goal 7 and other related goals hinges on increased access to clean energy alternatives for all people irrespective of where they live.However,most developing countries including Ghana still rely largely on traditional biomass as the main source of household energy as a result of a myriad of challenges.From the foregoing,the present study uses the Ghana Living Standard Survey 7(GLSS 7)household data and the multinomial logit regression model to analyse the factors that determine the transition to cleaner cooking energy in Ghana.The analysis shows that the main determinants of household energy choice in Ghana are education,household dwelling type,household size,employment and income group.Whereas education,modern housing,paid employment and higher income increase the adoption of cleaner energy,a higher dependency ratio and employment in the informal sector increase the likelihood of using unclean energy.Increased access to education and the adoption of policies to improve housing conditions,employment and incomes are recommended to encourage the adoption of cleaner energy alternatives.

Lip print(LP)evidence can be an essential tool for human forensics.LPs have conventionally been developed using substances such as lysochrome dyes,fluorescent dyes,indigo dye,aluminium powder,and silver metallic powder.However,techniques for LP enhancement from various substrates are currently inconsistent and lack standardisation in practice.This review summarises current knowledge on the physical and chemical techniques of LP enhancement,identifies limitations,and provides suggestions for future research on practical applications of cheiloscopy as a forensic tool in criminal justice.

The poor wear resistance and bio-inertness surface of polyetheretherketone(PEEK)limits the implant applications of PEEK and its composites.Carbon fiber(CFR)was used to boost the wear resistance of PEEK;however,the bioactivity of carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone(CFR-PEEK)composites is even worse.The bioactivity of CFR-PEEK can be enhanced by constructing 3D porous structure.Nevertheless,large number of sulfur component introduced by sulfonation shows cytotoxicity and can cause damage to human cells.Besides,the sulfur component affects the cytotoxicity and bioactivity of sulfonated CFR-PEEK(SCFR-PEEK).Hydrothermal treatment can sweep away the sulfur component in the 3D porous structure of SCFR-PEEK.Meanwhile,the changes in crystallinity and hardness after hydrothermal treatment may also affect the wear resistance.Therefore,the effect of hydrothermal temperature on wear resistance,cytotoxicity and bioactivity of SCFR-PEEK were studied.In this work,the samples with hydrothermal temperature 90–120℃exhibited high wear resistance.The 3D pore structure of SCFR-PEEK unchanged after hydrothermal treatment,and the sulfur component in the 3D pore structure gradually decreased with increasing hydrothermal temperature by SEM images and EDS analysis.In addition,SCFR-PEEK treated in 90–120℃.Exhibited low cytotoxicity and high bioactivity,which is beneficial for the implant materials.

In this paper,we present the impact of migration on the spread of HIV and AIDS cases.A simple model for HIV and AIDS that incorporates migration and addresses its contributions to the spread of HIV and AIDS cases was constructed.The model was calibrated to HIV and AIDS incidence data from Malaysia.We explore the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo(MCMC)simulation method to estimate uncertainty in all the unknown parameters incorporated in our proposed model.Among the migrant population,1.5572e-01 were susceptible to HIV transmission,which constituted 67,801 migrants.A proportion of migrants,6.3773e-04,were estimated to be HIV infected,constituting 278 migrants.There were 72(per 10,000)migrants estimated to have had AIDS,representing a proportion of 1.6611e-08.The result suggests that the disease-free steady state was unstable since the estimated basic reproduction number R0 was 2.0906 and 2.3322 for the models without and with migration,respectively.This is not a good indicator from the public health point of view,as the aim is to stabilize the epidemic at the disease-free equilibrium.The advantage of introduction of migration to the simple model validated the true R0 and the transmission rate b associated with HIV and AIDS epidemic disease in Malaysia.It also indicates an approximately 12 percentage points increase in the rate of HIV infection with migration.

Rice plays a paramount role in food and nutrition security in many West African countries.Despite the doubling of production during the last decade,rice consumption has grown faster,creating a deficit between the demand and supply.Although the West African sub-region remains the main rice-producing centre on the continent,production is severely hampered by biotic and abiotic stresses.Drought is one of the factors that most severely reduce grain yields of rice.Systems of production need to be established in order to mitigate yield loss as a result of drought.This review discusses the effects of drought on rice production in West Africa and its mitigation with an emphasis on the improvement of tolerance to drought stress.Yield stability can be achieved by developing drought-tolerant varieties through several processes encompassing profiling of known QTLs and identification of new ones,marker-assisted selection,genomic selection,and extensive multi-locational yield trials.We suggest a comprehensive strategy for breeding drought-tolerant rice varieties in West Africa.

Introduction:Storage of specimens sampled from human remains for pathological testing,embalming for burial purposes,and for human identification often requires formalin fixation and/or paraffin embedding.Current knowledge in molecular biology techniques and forensic DNA analysis makes it possible to optimize the extraction of amplifiable DNA from formalin-fixed tissues by improving the pre-treatment,optimizing the digestion condition of proteinase K,simplifying the extraction protocol and purifying the extracted DNA with optimized volumes of alcohol.Aim:This research sought to extract amplifiable DNA from thirteen brain,bone marrow and cartilage samples from four formalin embalmed human cadavers.Materials and Methods:Brain,cartilage and bone marrow samples were taken from four different cadavers at autopsy at the Ghana Police Hospital mortuary in Accra,Ghana sixty-two days after embalming.An optimized preparation and DNA extraction protocol was carried out on all the samples.Brain samples were also taken from a non-formalin treated fifth cadaver of known STR profile,and standard DNA extraction performed to serve as positive control.Results:Our optimized protocol yielded detectable quantities of DNA from the samples when quantified with the 7500 Real-Time PCR equipment.The extracted DNA also yielded full STR profiles with varying peak heights for forensic identification purposes.The measured degradation indexes of the DNA samples were greater than 1.0,with peak heights of generated STR profiles above the limits of detection of the 3500 genetic analyzer.Conclusion:Our current study demonstrated an optimized method of DNA extraction from tissues(brain,cartilage and bone marrow)sampled from formalin embalmed human cadavers.The optimized protocol reduced the concentration of formalin fixation residues in extracted DNA from formalin-fixed tissues,thereby improving the amplification efficiency for STR profiling.Brain,bone marrow and cartilages can be a good source of DNA from embalmed and degraded human remains,though f
