Urothelial bladder carcinoma(UBC)is an intricate malignancy with a variable natural history and clinical *** developments in diagnosis/prognosis refi nement and treatment modalities,the recurrence rate is high,and progression from non-muscle to muscle invasive UBC commonly leads to ***,patients with muscle-invasive or extra-vesical disease often fail the standard chemotherapy treatment,and overall survival rates are ***,UBC remains a challenge in the oncology fi eld,representing an ideal candidate for research on biomarkers that could identify patients at increased risk of recurrence,progression,and ***,progress toward personalized medicine has been hampered by the unique genetic complexity of *** genome-wide expression and sequencing studies have brought new insights into its molecular features,pathogenesis and clinical diversity,revealing a landscape where classical pathology is intersected by the novel and heterogeneous molecular ***,it seems plausible to postulate that only an integrated signature of prognostic/predictive biomarkers inherent in different cancer hallmarks will reach clinical *** this review,we have summarized ours and others’research into novel putative biomarkers of progression and chemoresistance that encompass several hallmarks of cancer:tumor neovascularization,invasion and metastasis,and energy metabolism reprogramming of the tumor microenvironment.

Physical and Chemical Matrix Effects in Soil Carbon Quantification Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Advanced field methods of carbon (C) analysis should now be capable of providing repetitive, sequential measurements for the evaluation of spatial and temporal variation at a scale that was previously unfeasible. Some spectroscopy techniques, such as laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), have portable features that may potentially lead to clean and rapid alternative approaches for this purpose. The goal of this study was to quantify the C content of soils with different textures and with high iron and aluminum concentrations using LIBS. LIBS emission spectra from soil pellets were captured, and the C content was estimated (emission line of C (I) at 193.03 nm) after spectral offset and aluminum spectral interference correction. This technique is highly portable and could be ideal for providing the soil C content in a heterogeneous experiment. Dry combustion was used as a reference method, and for calibration a conventional linear model was evaluated based on soil textural classes. The correlation between reference and LIBS values showed r = 0.86 for medium-textured soils and r = 0.93 for fine-textured soils. The data showed that better correlation and lower error (14%) values were found for the fine-textured LIBS model. The limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 0.32% for medium-textured soils and 0.13% for fine-textured soils. The results indicated that LIBS quantification can be affected by the texture and chemical composition of soil. Signal treatment was shown to be very important for mitigation of these interferences and to improve quantification.

Punica granatum *** known antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory *** of different parts of this plant have been commonly used in the folk medicine to prevent and treat infections;and studies have supported the use of *** extracts for this ***,little is known of the effects of ***-derived fractions in severe infectious diseases such as ***,we investigated the actions of the hexane fraction(HF),rich in lipophilic compounds,obtained from the leaves of this plant,in a murine model of polymicrobial *** pre-treatment with HF increased mortality in septic *** same animals presented with lower levels of interleukin-6,nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide in their peritoneal lavage samples than vehicle *** also increased polymorphonuclear cell accumulation in to the peritoneum of mice with ***-derived nitric oxide upon lipopolysaccharide stimuli was markedly reduced by incubation with ***,triterpenes,phytosterols,vitamin E and ascorbyl palmitate were detected in the *** results indicate that *** leaf lipophilic fractions may worsen sepsis *** effect may be associated with its bioactive compounds which act synergistically or not,increasing sepsis mortality in vivo.

Use of Light Emitting Diode （LED） to reduce the side effects in the oral cavity for patients undergoing radiation therapy in the head and neck region

Purpose: To present a clinical case where the Light Emitting Diode (LED) was used to reduce the oral cavity's side effects in a patient undergoing radiation therapy in the head and neck region。Methods: A male patient, 49 years old, undergoing radiation therapy for Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the floor of the mouth was referred for the dentist's evaluation due to changes in his oral cavity caused by anti-cancer therapy。It was then proposed phototherapy treatment with LED to reduce the side effects of radiation therapy。The used device had the following characteristics: h = 642 nm (red diode), power = 170 mW and 0.8 cm2 tip (prototype from CePOF - Sao carlos, Brazil)。It was used the punctual application technique, 30 seconds per point。The points were distributed as follows: one point on each buccal mucosa, one point on the lower lip mucosa, one point on the upper lip mucosa and one point on the hard palate。It was performed 14 sessions ofphototherapy with LED, 3 sessions per week, following the mentioned parameters。Results: The presence of a Grade II mucositis lesion on the lower lip mucosa was the only registered lesion occurring after the 30th session of radiation therapy。The patient reported was satisfied with the outcome of phototherapy。Conclusion: despite the non coherence of the LED's light, its clinical results showed in this report added to the absence of side effects and the lower cost of the device technology suggest that its use in the prevention or reduction of the radiation therapy side effects in the oral cavity can be considered a plausible choice。

AIMTo analyze the diagnostic yield (DY), therapeutic impact (TI) and safety of capsule endoscopy (CE).METHODSThis is a multi-centre, observational, analytical, retrospective study. A total of 163 patients with suspicion of celiac disease (CD) (mean age = 46.4 ± 17.3 years, 68.1% women) who underwent CE from 2003 to 2015 were included. Patients were divided into four groups: seronegative CD with atrophy (Group-I, n = 19), seropositive CD without atrophy (Group-II, n = 39), contraindication to gastroscopy (Group-III, n = 6), seronegative CD without atrophy, but with a compatible context (Group-IV, n = 99). DY, TI and the safety of CE were *** overall DY was 54% and the final diagnosis was villous atrophy (n = 65, 39.9%), complicated CD (n = 12, 7.4%) and other enteropathies (n = 11, 6.8%; 8 Crohn’s). DY for groups I to IV was 73.7%, 69.2%, 50% and 44.4%, respectively. Atrophy was located in duodenum in 24 cases (36.9%), diffuse in 19 (29.2%), jejunal in 11 (16.9%), and patchy in 10 cases (15.4%). Factors associated with a greater DY were positive serology (68.3% vs 49.2%, P = 0.034) and older age (P = 0.008). On the other hand, neither sex nor clinical presentation, family background, positive histology or HLA status were associated with DY. CE results changed the therapeutic approach in 71.8% of the cases. Atrophy was associated with a greater TI (92.3% vs 45.3%, P ded to diet. There was one case of capsule retention (0.6%). Agreement between CE findings and subsequent histology was 100% for diagnosing normal/other conditions, 70% for suspected CD and 50% for complicated *** has a high DY in cases of suspicion of CD and it leads to changes in the clinical course of the disease. CE is safe procedure with a high degree of concordance with histology and it helps in the differential diagnosis of CD.
