The winemaking process involves the genera- tion of a significant amount of waste and wastewater. These residues should be addressed for recycling or treatment before being returned to environment. As each winery is unique in waste generation and disposal, plans for environmentally friendly waste management are not universal and should be tested for their effectiveness. In this study, a diagnostic was made during three years, in different wineries, throughout Portugal, in order to quantify and characterize the waste and the wastewater produced. The results showed that solid waste and wastewater are mainly produced during the harvest period, corresponding to 74% and 87%, respectively. One ton of processed grape approximately produce 0.13 t marc, 0.06 t lees, 0.03 t of stalks and 1.65 m3 of wastewater. No significant differences （P≤0.05） were observed for grape marc, lees and wastewater ratios, between years or wineries. With respect to the stalk ratio, there was no effect of year but the winery significantly affected this ratio （P ≤ 0.05）. During the study period the treated wastewater, since diluted, revealed suitable characteristics for irrigation representing an additional source of water. In this regard, the data acquisition and consolidation ensure the transfer of information and experience which constitute an essential step in a support decision tool design.

The safety of large structures requires adequate foundations, which implies a good knowledge of the geological and geotechnical conditions of the respective ground. In general, that is only possible through engineering geological studies which include proper site investigation techniques, adapted to the nature of the ground (rock mass or soil) and to the associated engineering problems. The paper illustrates the studies carried out for the design of the foundations of Ribeiradio 76 m high concrete gravity dam in a difficult rock mass and of Vasco da Gama Bridge, 13 km long, crossing the Tagus River in Lisbon, Portugal, through piles 75 m deep.

Rheumatoid arthritis （RA） is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by synovial joint inflammation and cartilage and bone tissue destruction. Although there exist some treatment strategies for RA, they are not completely safe and effective. Therefore, it is important to develop and test new drugs for RA that specifically target inflamed/swollen joints and simultaneously attenuate other possible damages to healthy tissues. Nanotechnology can be a good alternative to consider when envisioning predse medication for treating RA. Through the use of nanopartides, it is possible to increase bioavailability and bioactivity of therapeutics and enable selective targeting to damaged joints. Herein, recent studies using nanoparticles for the treatment of RA, namely with liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, dendrimers, and metallic nanoparticles, have been reviewed. These therapeutic strategies have shown great promise in improving the treatment over that by traditional drugs. The results of these studies confirm that feasibility of the use of nanopartides is mainly due to their biocompatibility, low toxicity, controlled release, and selective drug delivery to inflamed tissues in animal RA models. Therefore, it is possible to claim that nanotechnology will, in the near future, play a crucial role in advanced treatments and patient-specific therapies for human diseases such as RA.

In present study, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cu, Ca, Mg, P and K contents of 85 introgression lines （ILs） derived from a cross between an elite indica cultivar Teqing and the wild rice （Oryza rufipogon） were measured by inductively coupled argon plasma （ICAP） spectrometry. Substantial variation was observed for all traits and most of the mineral elements were significantly positive correlated or independent except for Fe with Cu. A total of 31 putative quantitative trait loci （QTLs） were detected for these eight mineral elements by single point analysis. Wild rice （O. rufipogon） contributed favorable alleles for most of the QTLs （26 QTLs）, and chromosomes 1,9 and 12 exhibited 14 QTLs （45%） for these traits. One major effect of QTL for zinc content accounted for the largest proportion of phenotypic variation （11%-19%） was detected near the simple sequence repeats marker RM152 on chromosome 8. The co-locations of QTLs for some mineral elements observed in this mapping population suggested the relationship was at a molecular level among these traits and could be helpful for simultaneous improvement of these traits in rice grain by marker assisted selection.

Accurate modelling of the potential failure modes in the rock mass is an essential task towards a robust design of roof support systems in coal *** use of generalised rock mass properties based on averaged properties(***-Brown model) has been found to limit the capability to reproduce the actual rock mass behaviour which may include a wide range of interacting and complex failure mechanisms such as shear and tension fracturing of the intact rock and shear and separation of pre-existing discontinuities,including *** studies have also shown that traditional models,such as the Mohr-Coulomb,may not accurately describe the behaviour of the intact rock,particularly for stress induced failures where spalling and slabbing are *** is mainly due to the cohesion and friction components of the shear strength of the intact rock not being mobilised at the same rate with strain-softening of the former component playing an essential role in the post peak *** addition,coal measure rocks are often transversely isotropic,both by way of the preferred orientation of clay particles within the finer grained lithology and by bedding textures and bedding partings,and this is often ignored in computer simulations.A newly developed transversely isotropic brittle rock mass model is applied in the simulation of a hypothetical and simple roadway development.A Cohesion Weakening-Friction Strengthening(CWFS) approach is adopted to describe the intact rock where the mobilisation and strain-softening of the two shear strength components are linked to plastic *** impacts of anisotropy and brittle rock on the development of the excavation disturbed zone or height of softening,as often referred to,are investigated and their implication in the roof support design discussed.

Aims Biological invasions are recognized to put native species in risk of *** this study,I tested whether the invasion of Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.(Moraceae;jackfruit)in the Neotropics was explained by its biotic stability,an intrinsic force,or by human occupation,an extrinsic *** I used an ensemble framework combining 12 ecological niche models(ENMs)and 4 atmosphere-ocean general circulation *** were constructed for the pre-industrial time period in the Indo-Malaya biogeographic region,the native habitat of ***,and were then projected to past(last glacial maximum,21000 years ago and mid-Holocene,6000 years ago)and future(end of century,2080)*** ENMs were used to establish the biotic stability of ***-phyllus in areas where it was predicted to be present concomitantly within these four time *** biotic stability was projected onto the Neotropics,and then I used a null model and logistic regression to test what the main driver of *** *** Findings In general,the presence of *** in the Neotropics was not explained by biotic stability,tested by the null ***,human occupation explained much of its presence in the invaded habitat,once all standardized coefficients related to this driver was significant positive in the logistic *** on these results,humans sustained the presence of ***-erophyllus in the Neotropics,probably because of the additive influences of propagule pressure and habitat ***,the recommendation is that the cultivation of *** in the Neotropics must be regulated and supervised,primarily near reserve areas.

Though they reduce microorganism growth, current hospital disinfectants also damage many of today’s modern electronic devices such as tablets and smartphones. Herein, the efficacy of a new chlorhexidine digluconate gel (CDG) was tested as a disinfectant for mobile and electronic devices in a clinical environment. Specifically, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus were used to infect the screen of eight smartphones. The CDG was prepared at concentrations of 2%, 4% and 6%, and tested on paper disks infected with these bacteria before being tested on the smartphones. The devices were disinfected with the CDG gel (4%) at two times: immediately and after 5 min of the bacterial contamination. In all cases, the CDG gel eliminated 100% of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms compared to the control (without any agent). In addition, the gel did not damage the smartphones. Therefore, our study suggests that the CDG gel may be applied to disinfect a wide range of electronic devices for health care professionals in the hospital environment.

Distribution of trace metals and Pb isotopes in bottom sediments of the Murucupi River,North Brazil

The Murucupi River belongs to the hydrographic network of the Para River estuary,at the southern portion of the Amazon River mouth,which consists of a fluvial-marine transitional zone under strong impact of both tidal and fluvial *** geochemical results obtained for bottom sediments from the Murucupi River,the Arrozal Channel,and the Para River indicate a natural variation of Pb,Cr,Cu,Zn,and Ni content among these water ways with no significant anthropogenic *** to the threshold effects level(TEL),the contents of trace metals do not offer risk to the local *** contrast,the differences in the Pb isotopic composition of sediments in the Murucupi River,the Arrozal Channel,and the Para River are *** isotopic signatures indicate an anthropogenic contribution of Pb in the Murucupi River originating from the domestic effluents of urban centers;industrial waste represented by red mud is not *** results demonstrate that the Pb isotopic signature is a prospective indicator for future contamination of bottom sediments by trace metals and is useful for identifying contaminants among the possible anthropogenic sources.
