Background Neuropathological diagnosis of argyrophilic grain disease(AGD)is currently based primarily on the combination of argyrophilic grain(AG)visualized using Gallyas-Braak silver staining,phosphorylated tau-positive pretangles,coiled bodies,and ballooned neuron *** AGD is common in patients with dementia and/or prominent psychiatric symptoms,whether it is a distinct neurological disease entity or a by-product of the aging process remains *** In 1449 serial forensic autopsy cases>40 years old(823 males and 525 females,aged 40-101 years,mean age 70.0±14.1 years),we examined the frequency and comorbid pathology of AGD cases and investigated the clini-cal appearance by comparing those with non-AGD cases using the propensity *** Of the 1449 cases,we detected 342 AGD cases(23.6%;mean age 79.7 years;177 males and 165 females).The AGD frequency and stage increased with age(Pk of suicide of 1.72(1.30-2.26).The frequency of suicide was significantly higher in AGD cases than in non-AGD cases in female but not male *** relative risk of suicide increased to 2.27(1.20-4.30)and 6.50(1.58-26.76)in AGD patients with Lewy and progressive supranuclear palsy pathology,respectively,and decreased to 0.88(0.38-2.10)in those with advanced AD *** AGD cases,23.4%had dementia;however,the difference was not significant after controlling for age,sex,and comorbid *** Our study demonstrated that AGD is a significant and isolated risk factor for psychiatric hospital visits and suicide *** older adults,AGs may contribute to the progression of functional impairment of the limbic system,which leads to psychiatric dis

Photoluminescence, scintillation and thermally-stimulated luminescence properties of Tb-doped 12CaO·7Al2O3 single crystals grown by FZ method

Tb-doped 12CaO·7Al_2O_3（Tb：C12A7） crystals were synthesized by the floating zone（FZ） method and the photoluminescence（PL）, scintillation and thermally-stimulated luminescence（TSL） properties were investigated. The photoluminescence（PL） emission spectra and PL decay time profiles were investigated by using Quantaurus-tau（Hamamatsu）. The scintillation spectra and decay time profiles were measured by using our laboratory-constructed set-up under X-ray irradiation. Finally, TSL glow curve was measured by using Nanogray TL-2000 with the heating rate of 1 °C/s. In PL and scintillation, emission peaks were observed at 493, 543, 587 and 620 nm due to the 4f-4f transitions of Tb3~＋. Decay time constants of the emission by PL and scintillation appeared to be different, and the measured values were approximately 2.4 and 1.9 ms, respectively. After X-ray irradiations, the 0.5%（all Tb contents in this paper are in mole fraction） and 1.0% Tb-doped samples showed a single intense and broad glow peak around 100 oC while 1.2%–1.5% Tb-doped samples showed notable additional peak around 250 oC.

Scintillation and optical properties of Ce-doped YAGG transparent ceramics

We investigated photoluminescence （PL） and scintillation properties of Ce3＋-doped Y3A12Ga3OI2 （Ce：YAGG） trans- parent ceramics synthesized by vacuum sintering with different Ce3＋ concentrations （mol.%） from 0.3% to 1% （0.3%Ce：YAGG, 0.5%Ce：YAGG, 0.8%Ce：YAGG and I%Ce：YAGG）. The samples were synthesized by the vacuum sintering technique. The obtained samples showed a very strong and broad PL emission by the 5dl-4f transition of Ce3＋ in the wavelength range from 470 to 600 nm. The PL decay profiles were approximated by a single exponential decay function with the time constants of around 33-39 ns, Fur- thermore, the scintillation spectra induced by X-rays showed similar features with those observed in PL. The scintillation decay time profiles followed a second-order exponential decay function. The fast component group （ranged 3542 ns） were dominantly contrib- uted by the 5d1-4f transition of Ce3＋. The pulse height spectra utilizing the latter emissions showed a clear photoabsorption peak. Among those samples tested, 0.5%Ce：YAGG sample showed the highest scintillation light yield of 21,400 ph/MeV under 13VCs y-ray irradiation.

Mk615 inhibits pancreatic cancer cell growth by dual inhibition of Aurora A and B kinases

AIM:To investigate the anti-neoplastic effect of Mk615, an anti-neoplastic compound isolated from Japanese apricot, against human pancreatic cancer cells in vitro. METHODS: Three human pancreatic cancer cell lines PANC-1, Pk-1, and Pk45H were cultured with Mk615 at concentrations of 600, 300, 150, and 0 μg/mL. Growth inhibition was evaluated by cell proliferation assay, and killing activity was determined by lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay. Expression of Aurora A and B kinases was detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Western blotting. Cell cycle stages were evaluated by flow cytometry. RESULTS: The growth inhibitory rates of Mk615 at 150, 300, and 600 μg/mL were 2.3% ± 0.9%, 8.9% ± 3.2% and 67.1% ± 8.1% on PANC1 cells, 1.3% ± 0.3%, 8.7% ± 4.1% and 45.7 ± 7.6% on Pk1 cells, and 1.2 ± 0.8%, 9.1% ± 2.1% and 52.1% ± 5.5% on Pk45H cells, respectively (P k615 at 0, 150, 300, and 600 μg/mL were 19.6% ± 1.3%, 26.7% ± 1.8%, 25.5% ± 0.9% and 26.4% ± 0.9% in PANC1 cells, 19.7% ± 1.3%, 24.7% ± 0.8%, 25.9% ± 0.9% and 29.9% ± 1.1% in Pk1 cells, and 28.0% ± 0.9%, 31.2% ± 0.9%, 30.4% ± 1.1% and 35.3 ± 1.0% in Pk45H cells, respectively (P k615 dually inhibited the expression of Aurora A and B kinases. Cell cycle analysis revealed that Mk615 increased the population of cells in G2/M phase. CONCLUSION: Mk615 exerts an anti-neoplastic effect on human pancreatic cancer cells in vitro by dual inhibition of Aurora A and B kinases.

This letter discusses the incidence of anal cancer among Crohn's disease(CD)-related *** with CD have been demonstrated to be at a higher risk of developing small bowel and colorectal cancers than healthy *** CD-associated anal cancer is relatively rare,patients with CD accom-panied by anal or perianal lesions are at increased risk of anal ***-tionally,compared to ulcerative colitis,which is also an inflammatory disease,CD-related anal cancer is often detected at an advanced stage owing to the complexity of CD and is associated with a poor prognosis with frequent local ***,the detection of early-stage cancer is crucial for improving the ***,the surveillance methods recommended for CD-related malignancies in the United States and Europe are similar to those for ulcerative *** are not appropriate for detecting CD-related malignancies in the recto-anal ***,there is an urgent need for surveillance programs aimed at the early detection of malignant anorectal lesions in patients with CD.

Hepatocellular carcinoma with chronic B-type hepatitis complicated by autoimmune hemolytic anemia:A case report

A 57-year-old man consulted a local hospital because of a persistent slight fever. At the age of 37 years he was diagnosed having B-type hepatitis, but left the liver dysfunction untreated. Twenty years later, he was diagnosed having chronic hepatitis B, hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） and macrocytic anemia, and referred to our hospital for further investigation. A HCC with a maximum diameter of 5.2 cm was detected in segment 8. Results of blood tests included 1.8 mg/dL serum total bilirubin, 0.9 mg/dL bilirubin, less than 10 mg/dL haptoglobin, 7.9 g/dL hemoglobin, 130 fL MCV, and 14.5% reticuloo/tes. A bone marrow sample showed erythroid hyperplasia. The direct Coombs test gave a positive result. We diagnosed the anemia as autoimmmune hemolytic anemia （AIHA）, for which prednisolone could not be administered due to positivity for HBsAg and HBeAg. After preparation of washed blood cells for later transfusion, the patient underwent systematic resection of segment 8. The cut surface of the resected specimen demonstrated an encapsulated yellow-brownish tumor measuring 52 mmx 40 mm which was diagnosed pathologicaly as moderately differentiated HCC. On the 9th postoperative day, the patient＇s temperature rose to 38℃, and exacerbated hemolysis was observed. The maximum total bilirubin value was 5.8 mg/dL and minimum hemoglobin level was 4.6 g/dL. He tolerated this period without blood transfusion. Currently he is being followed up as an outpatient, and shows no signs of HCC recurrence or symptoms of anemia. AIHA associated with HBV infection has been described in only three previous cases, and the present case is the first in which surgery was performed for accompanying HCC.

Observation of Magnetic Domain Structures of Magnetic Thin Films by the Lorentz Electron Microscopy

The microstructure change in thin NiFe/Cu/NiFe films during the magnetization process was observed by the Lorentz electronmicroscopy. TWo types of films were prepared: (1) one NiFe layer with anisotropy and the other layer without, and (2) both NiFe layershave anisotropy normal each other. The domain wall migration and magnetization rotation processes in each of NiFe layers could be observed separately. The presence of magnetic anisotropy in the magnetic layer effectively controls the behavior of magnetic domains. Theinteraction between the two NiFe layers of the film could be observed not so strong in the present experiment.

Improving conditional random field model for prediction of protein-RNA residue-base contacts

Background： For understanding biological cellular systems, it is important to analyze interactions between protein residues and RNA bases. A method based on conditional random fields （CRFs） was developed for predicting contacts between residues and bases, which receives multiple sequence alignments for given protein and RNA sequences, respectively, and learns the model with many parameters involved in relationships between neighboring residue-base pairs by maximizing the pseudo likelihood function. Methods： In this paper, we proposed a novel CRF-based model with more complicated dependency relationships between random variables than the previous model, but which takes less parameters for the sake of avoidance of overfitting to training data. Results： We performed cross-validation experiments for evaluating the proposed model, and took the average of AUC （area under receiver operating characteristic curve） scores. The result suggests that the proposed CRF-based model without using Ll-norm regularization （lasso） outperforms the existing model with and without the lasso under several input observations to CRFs. Conclusions： We proposed a novel stochastic model for predicting protein-RNA residue-base contacts, and improved the prediction accuracy in terms of the AUC score. It implies that more dependency relationships in a CRF could be controlled by less parameters.

New anti-proliferative agent,Mk615,from Japanese apricot “Prunus mume” induces striking autophagy in colon cancer cells in vitro

AIM: To investigate the anti-neoplastic effects of Mk615, an extract from the Japanese apricot (Prunus mume), against colon cancer cells. METHODS: Three colon cancer cell lines, SW480, COLO, and WiDr, were cultured with Mk615. Growth inhibition was evaluated by cell proliferation assay and killing activity was determined by lactate dehydrogenase assay. Induction of apoptosis was evaluated by annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry. Morphological changes were studied by light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8. RESULTS: Mk615 inhibited growth and lysed SW480, COLO and WiDr cells in a dose-dependent manner. Annexin Ⅴ flow cytometry showed that Mk615 induced apoptosis after 6 h incubation, at which point the occurrence of apoptotic cells was 68.0%, 65.7% and 64.7% for SW480, COLO, and WiDr cells, respectively. Light and electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining with Atg8 revealed that Mk615 induced massive cytoplasmic vacuoles (autophagosomes) in all three cell lines. CONCLUSION: Mk615 has an anti-neoplastic effect against colon cancer cells. The effect may be exerted by induction of apoptosis and autophagy.

The 2011 Eastern Japan Great Earthquake Disaster:Overview and Comments

This article briefly reviews the causes and impacts of the massive eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami of 11 March 2011, and comments on the response measures taken by Japan to cope with this devastating disaster. Mass losses occurred mostly because the intensity of the quake and the induced tsunami exceeded local coping capacity. Particularly, the nuclear power plant crisis triggered by the tsunami significantly increased the short-and long-term impacts of the disaster. While the coping capacity Japanese society built after the 1995 Hanshin-Awaji great earthquake tremendously mitigated the damages, there is room for improvement despite Japan’s great efforts in this disaster. Investigating the tsunami preparedness of the coastal nuclear power plants is an issue of paramount importance. In response to future large-scale disasters, there is an urgent need for a highly collaborative framework based on which all available resources could be mobilized;a mutual assistance and rescue system against catastrophes among regions and countries on the basis of international humanitarian aid;and further in-depth research on the multi-hazard and disaster-chain phenomenon in large-scale disasters and corresponding governance approaches.
