Pulmonary Large Cell Carcinoma Displays High Expression of EMMPRIN and VEGF

OBJECTIVE To investigate the expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer(EMMPRIN) and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) in lung carcinomas,and to clarify their roles in carcinoma *** Expression of EMMPRIN and VEGF was examined with tissue microarrays(TMAs) of lung carcinomas(n = 181),and their suppression in adjacent normal lung samples(n = 40) were determined by *** results were compared with clinicopathological fi ndings for the same *** Both EMMPRIN and VEGF were occasionally ex-pressed in pseudostratif ied columnar epithelium and frequently in lung ***,EMMPRIN and VEGF displayed higher levels in large(LCC) cell carcinomas than adenocarcinoma(AD),squamous(SQ) and small cell carcinomas(SCC)(P < 0.05).EMMPRIN was more highly expressed in SQ as compared with AD(P < 0.05),while the converse was true for VEGF(P < 0.05).Binding was generally more intense for EMMPRIN in samples from male compared to female patients(P < 0.05),whereas the lat-ter tended to exhibit more VEGF expression(P < 0.05).Positive as-sociations of VEGF expression with the TNM stage and amounts of EMMPRIN were noted in the lung carcinomas(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION EMMPRIN and VEGF possibly contribute to physiological repair of normal lung and histogenesis of lung *** proteins might be involved in the molecular basis for differences in the incidence of lung carcinoma between men and women.

AIM： To elucidate the biological effects of transforming growth factor-β1 （TGF-β1） on intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma （ICC）.METHODS： We investigated the effects of TGF-β1 on human ICC cell lines （HuCCT1, MEC, and HUH-28） by monitoring the influence of TGF-β1 on tumor growth and interleukin-6 （IL-6） expression in ICC cells.RESULTS： All three human ICC cell lines produced TGF-β1 and demonstrated accelerated growth in the presence of TGF-β1 with no apoptotic effect. Studies on HuCCT1 revealed a TGF-β1-induced stimulation of the expression of TGF-β1, as well as a decrease in TGF-β1 mRNA expression induced by neutralizing anti-TGF-β1 antibody. These results indicate that TGF-β1 stimulates the production and function of TGF-β1 in an autocrine fashion. Further, IL-6 secretion was observed in all three cell lines and exhibited an inhibitory response to neutralizing anti-TGF-β1 antibody. Experiments using HuCCT1 revealed a TGF-β1-induced acceleration of IL-6 protein expression and mRNA levels. These findings demonstrate a functional interaction between TGF-β1 and IL-6. All three cell lines proliferated in the presence of IL-6. In contrast, TGF-β1 induced no growth effect in HuCCT1 in the presence of small interfering RNA against a specific cell surface receptor of IL-6 and signal transducer and activator of transcription-3.CONCLUSION： ICC cells produce TGF-β1 and confer a TGF-β1-induced growth effect in an autocrine ***-β1 activates ILo6 production, and the functional interaction between TGF-β1 and IL-6 contributes to ICC cell growth by TGF-β1.

On September 10, 2015, unprecedented flood was occurred in Kinugawa River basin located on eastern Japan. It inundated 40 km2 of flood plain in Joso city, Ibaraki Prefecture, and more than 4000 people there called for help despite supposedly having sufficient time to evacuate. Some said that small initial flood before main severe flood arrived made them make a mistake in deciding whether to evacuate or stay there, despite having to actually evacuate in reality. This study focused on flood behaviour in this area, in particular, the effect of a small drainage channel lying on the flood plain which caused fast flood diffusion in case of occurring huge overflowing. Field investigations starting on time of the disaster with high-resolution positioning system were conducted to obtain spatial maps of flood depth and height. For appropriate modelling of the effect of small channel, we applied simulation model coupling 1-dimensional (1D) and 2-dimensional (2D) hydraulic scheme on the field and compared results from the 1D/2D coupled model and model without 1D scheme. The models provided information that the flood could reach 4 hours earlier to the city central of Joso city comparing in case of model without 1D scheme. The water depth rose irregularly and it was more confusing and difficult for the victims to make appropriate evacuation act.

Spatial Heterogeneity of Vegetation in China

The spatial heterogeneity and ecological characteristics of 74 vegetation types and the lack of vegetation type within the 9.6 million km2 of Chinese territory were studied using data from the China vegetation map. The analysis used 877 large quadrats 10 mm×10 mm （actual size 100 km×100 km）, which covered about 8.77 million km^2. Each large-quadrat was divided into four small 5 mm×5mm quadrats （actual size 50 km×50 km）. The frequency of occurrence of all vegetation types was recorded in each small quadrat. The survey using the Shiyomi method of vegetation analysis based on the beta-binomial distribution was adopted to describe the frequency of occurrence and spatial heterogeneity for each kind of vegetation. The weighted average heterogeneity of all the vegetation types in the landscape provides a measure of the landscape level heterogeneity which describes the spatial intricacy of the existing vegetation composition. The maximum spatial vegetation heterogeneity was 0.8620 in the frigid-temperate coniferous forest of Larix （V1）, which dominates cold moist northeast China. The minimum spatial heterogeneity with a low occurrence was the Caragana tibetica in the gravel desert in the western Yellow River Hetao area. The minimum occurrence with a low spatial heterogeneity was the Monsoon rainforest on rock in Guangxi and Yunnan Provinces. The vegetation types on the Qing-Zang Plateau were found to be representative of Chinese vegetation because of the very high occurrence and spatial heterogeneity of these vegetation types. The weighted average of the heterogeneity was 0.677, while the vegetation diversity index was 3.29.

Rapid Algorithm for Independent Component Analysis

A class of rapid algorithms for independent component analysis (ICA) is presented. This method utilizes multi-step past information with respect to an existing fixed-point style for increasing the non-Gaussianity. This can be viewed as the addition of a variable-size momentum term. The use of past information comes from the idea of surrogate optimization. There is little additional cost for either software design or runtime execution when past information is included. The speed of the algorithm is evaluated on both simulated and real-world data. The real-world data includes color images and electroencephalograms (EEGs), which are an important source of data on human-computer interactions. From these experiments, it is found that the method we present here, the RapidICA, performs quickly, especially for the demixing of super-Gaussian signals.

The vegetation spatial heterogeneity and ecological characteristics in different soil regions were analyzed by surveying the vegetation in 12 different soil regions of Inner Mongolia, China, including coniferous-broadleaf deciduous forests, shrub, grassland, and desert regions with 1122 large 2 cm × 2 cm quadrats （actual size 30 km × 30 km, referred to as L-quadrat hereafter） in about 1.18 million km2. Each L-quadrat was divided into four small 1 cm × 1 cm quadrats （actual size 15 km × 15 km, S-quadrat）. The vegetation was analyzed based on the beta-binomial distribution to describe the frequency of occurrence and spatial heterogeneity for each kind of vegetation. The weighted average of the heterogeneity of all vegetation in the same soil region provides a measure of the soil regional landscape level heterogeneity which describes the spatial complexity of the regional landscape composition of the existing vegetation. Comparison of the vegetation characteristics in the 12 soil regions shows that, the calcic gray soil has the highest average vegetation type per quadrat. The largest soil region is calcic chestnut soil and has the most vegetation types. Every soil region has its own dominant vegetation sequence which dominates in occurrence and dominant vegetation types which dominates in spatial heterogeneity. For the Inner Mongolian vegetation, the weighted average of the heterogeneity is 0.60 and the vegetation diversity index is 4.47.

Although the standard treatment for Kawasaki disease(KD)is intravenous immunoglobulin(IVIG)combined with oral aspirin,18%of 1st IVIG is refractory[1].Recently,the efficacy of immunomodulatory drugs for IVIG-resistant KD,such as prednisolone,infliximab(IFX),and cyclosporine(CsA),has been reported[2-5].However,optimal immunomodulatory therapy for IVIG-resistant KD has not yet been established.
