Introduction: Impulsivity in intertemporal choice has been operationalized as “delay discounting,” referring to the preference for a sooner, smaller reward in neuroeconomics. It is reportedly associated with the dopaminergic systems. Dopamine receptor D2 (DRD2) is the D2 subtype of the dopamine receptor of the G-protein coupled receptor family. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in DRD2 gene on delay discounting. Methods: The participants consisted of 91 healthy Japanese people (66 males and 25 females with a mean age of 40.9 ± 6.9 years). Each participant completed the Kirby’s monetary choice questionnaire (MCQ) for delayed gain and donated a whole blood sample. Two SNPs (C957T (rs6277) and TaqI A (rs1800497)) in DRD2 were genotyped by using the DigiTag2 assay. SNP linear regression analyses with 100,000 permutations were conducted for the hyperbolic time-discount rate (k). Results: The SNP C957T showed a significant association;participants with more minor alleles (T) were more impulsive in intertemporal choice for delayed gain (multiplicity-corrected P = 0.041 with a small effect size). Conclusion: The variation in the DRD2 gene is associated with impulsive decision-making. This is the first study to demonstrate an association between DRD2 and impulsivity in intertemporal choice with a multiplicity-corrected significance.

Morphology of Acetabulum and Femoral Head-Neck Junction in Hip Dysplasia Which Underwent Rotational Acetabular Osteotomy

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preoperative radiographs with cases of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) leading to rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) or curved peri-ace-tabular osteotomy (CPO), and examine the frequency of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) related bone morphology in the acetabulum and femoral head-neck junction. Twenty-four hips with hip dyaplasia who underwent CPO or RAO were included in this study. Six hips had grade 0 and eighteen hips had grade 1 OA according to the Tönnis classification. We excluded patients with moderate and severe hip osteoarthritis and major femoral head deformities. Preoperative radiograph was evaluated on sharp angle, center-edge angle, alpha angle, crossover sign and posterior wall sign. Crossover signs were revealed in 7 hips (29.2%);posterior wall signs were revealed in 16 hips (66.7%);and cam-type deformities with an alpha angle of ≥50.5°were observed in 19 hips (79.2%) in preoperative evaluation. As determined using the Tönnis scale, no progression of osteoarthritis was found in 16 of the 24 hips;there was a one-grade progression in 8 hips. Among the 8 hips, either positive cross-over sign or posterior sign in acetabulum, and an alpha angle of ≥50.5°in femur were observed in six hips with progression of osteoarthritis. The presence of cam-type deformity and acetabular retroversion in patients who underwent RAO or CPO was relatively high in preoperative radiographs, and caution should be employed during surgery in patients with DDH. There is a possibility of secondary FAI due to excessive forward coverage of the bone fragments after RAO and CPO.

Change in Aggregate Shape of Heat Treated Carbon Nanoparticles

To better understand the fusion mechanism of heated carbon black, heat treatment is conducted for carbon black produced by benzene pyrolysis. The effects of （a） heating time, （b） heating temperature and （c） heating rate on the aggregate shape and mean primary particle diameter of the carbon black are investigated using TEM （transmission electron microscopy）. The mean primary particle diameter does not change significantly when carbon black is heat treated. For short heating times and low heating temperatures, the aggregate shapes become simple when compared with those of non-heated carbon black, and shapes become complex with an increase in the heating time. Also, for low heating rates, the aggregate shapes become significantly simple when compared with those of non-heated carbon black. The results of this study suggest that sintering between primary particles is promoted under relatively low heating temperatures, and Ostwald ripening among aggregates is promoted under relatively high heating temperatures.

Phosphorylation of histone H2AX on Ser139 is one of the key events of the DNA damage response. Phosphorylated H2AX,defined as H2AX,is considered to be a marker of formation of DNA double-strand breaks(DSBs)[1]. It has been reported that UV irradiation would induce different kinetic variation between phosphorylation of histone H2AX and p53 in tumor cells. Recently,Histone H2AX phosphorylation on a serine four residues from the carboxylterminus (producing γH2AX) as an ultra-sensitive indicator of the presence of DSBs (sensitive even at the mGy level) has largely supplanted physical methods for the detection of DSBs[1].Analysis of γH2AX has potential to provide useful information on tumor and normal cell response to ionizing radiation after exposure to clinically relevant doses of radiation[2].

AIM:To investigate thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA)in liver transplantion,because TMA is an infrequent but life-threatening complication in the transplantation field. METHODS:A total of 206 patients who underwent living-donor liver transplantation (LDLT) were evaluated,and the TMA-like disorder (TMALD) occurred in seven recipients. RESULTS:These TMALD recipients showed poor outcomes in comparison with other 199 recipients. Although two TMALD recipients successfully recovered,the other five recipients finally died despite intensive treatments including repeated plasma exchange (PE) and re-transplantation. Histopathological analysis of liver biopsies after LDLT revealed obvious differences according to the outcomes. Qualitative analysis of antibodies against a disintegrin-like domain and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motifs (ADAMTS-13) were negative in all patients. The fragmentation of red cells,the microhemorrhagic macules and the platelet counts were early markers for the suspicion of TMALD after LDLT. Although the absolute values of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and ADAMTS-13 did not necessarily reflect TMALD,the vWF/ADAMTS-13 ratio had a clear diagnostic value in all cases. The establishment of adequate treatments for TMALD,such as PE for ADAMTS-13 replenishment or treatments against inhibitory antibodies,must be decided according to each case. CONCLUSION:The optimal induction of adequate therapies based on early recognition of TMALD by the reliable markers may confer a large advantage for TMALD after LDLT.

Extended pelvic lymphadenectomy(EPL) with total mesorectal excision(TME) has been reported to provide oncological benefit in lower rectal cancer in *** Western countries EPL is not widely accepted because of frequent morbidity but instead preoperative chemoradiation(CRT) followed by TME has been established as a standard treatment for decreasing local ***,several studies have focused on the comparison between these two distinct therapeutic approaches in Western countries and Japan.A study comparing Dutch trial data and Japanese data revealed that EPL and RT are almost equivalent in decreasing local recurrence in lower rectal cancer as compared with TME *** that almost 45 survival can be achieved by EPL even in the presence of metastatic lateral lymph nodes(LLNs),EPL performed by experienced surgeons definitely contributes to decrease local *** the other hand,a randomized controlled trial in Japan that compared EPL with conventional TME following preoperative RT revealed that EPL is associated with a higher frequency of sexual and urinary dysfunction without oncological benefits in the presence of preoperative *** this point,preoperative CRT followed by conventional TME without EPL would be a better therapeutic approach in patients without evident metastatic *** future treatment,it would be desirable to have a narrower indication for EPL using full advantage of recent improvement in image *** objective comparison of these two principles between Japan and the West is difficult due to differences in patient groups,further studies would lead to the next great step towards future improvement in treating lower rectal cancer.
