There are several conditions that can lead to portal vein thrombosis(PVT), including including infection, malignancies, and coagulation disorders. Anew condition of interest is protein c and S deficiencies, associated with hypercoagulation and recurrent venous thromboembolism. We report the case of a non-cirrhotic 63-year-old male diagnosed with acute superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and PVT and combined deficiencies in proteins c and S, recanalized by short-term low molecular heparin plus oral warfarin therapy.

A new additive technique for manufacturing of short fibre-reinforced ultra-refractory ceramics is *** technique allows the fabrication of solvent-free,thin(~100µm),flexible,and easy-to-handle sheets suitable for fabricating homogeneous or layered structures.A large range of compositions,in terms of matrix and fibre volumetric contents,from 0%to 100%is *** amount of short carbon fibres incorporated in the sheets ranged from 20 to 50 vol%,whereas the fibre length ranged from 3 to 5 *** matrix composition investigated with this technique consisted of ZrB_(2)/Sic/Y_(2)o_(3).By increasing the fibre amount from 35 to 50 vol%,an improvement of mechanical properties was ***-point flexural strength(σ)ranged from 107 to 140 MPa,depending on the amount of carbon fibres(cf).The same holds true for the work of fracture,ranging from 108 to 253 J/m^(2).Functionally graded composites were fabricated by overlapping sheets with a fibre gradient(0%-50%).

Pathogenic mutations involving DNA repeat expansions are responsible for over 20 different neuronal and neuromuscular diseases. All result from expanded tracts of repetitive DNA sequences(mostly microsatellites) that become unstable beyond a critical length whentransmitted across generations. Nearly all are inherited as autosomal dominant conditions and are typically associated with anticipation. Pathologic unstable repeat expansions can be classified according to their length, repeat sequence, gene location and underlying pathologic mechanisms. This review summarizes the current contribution of mutant pluripotent stem cells(diseased human embryonic stem cells and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells) to the research of unstable repeat pathologies by focusing on particularly large unstable noncoding expansions. Among this class of disorders are Fragile X syndrome and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, myotonic dystrophy type 1 and myotonic dystrophy type 2, Friedreich ataxia and c9 related amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and/or frontotemporal dementia, Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy and potentially more. common features that are typical to this subclass of conditions are RNA toxic gain-of-function, epigenetic loss-of-function, toxic repeat-associated non-ATG translation and somatic instability. For each mechanism we summarize the currently available stem cell based models, highlight how they contributed to better understanding of the related mechanism, and discuss how they may be utilized in future investigations.

AIM: To evaluate the prognostic value of percentage of 13c-phenylalanine oxidation (13c-Pheox) obtained by 13c-phenylalanine breath test (13c-PheBT) on the survival of patients with chronic liver failure. METHoDS: The hepatic function was determined by standard liver blood tests and the percentage of 13c-Pheox in 118 chronic liver failure patients. The follow-up period was of 64 mo. Survival analysis was performed by the Kaplan-Meier method and variables that were significant (P oduced in a multivariate analysis according to the hazard model proposed by cox. RESULTS: Forty-one patients died due to progressive liver failure during the follow-up period. The probability of survival at 12, 24, 36, 48 and 64 mo was 0.88, 0.78, 0.66, 0.57 and 0.19, respectively. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that child-Pugh classes, age, creatinine and the percentage of 13c-Pheox (HR 0.338, 95% cI: 0.150-0.762, P = 0.009) were independent predictors of survival. When child-Pugh classes were replaced by all the parameters of the score, only albumin, bilirubin, creatinine, age and the percentage of 13c-Pheox (HR 0.449, 95% cI: 0.206-0.979, P = 0.034) were found to be independent predictors of ***: Percentage of 13c-Pheox obtained by 13c-PheBT is a strong predictor of survival in patients with chronic liver disease.

objective To evaluate immediate transcatheter aortic valve implantation （TAVI） results and medium-term follow-up in very elderly pa- tients with severe and symptomatic aortic stenosis （AS）. Methods This multicenter, observational and prospective study was carried out in three hospitals. We included consecutive very elderly （〉 85 years） patients with severe AS treated by TAVI. The primary endpoint was to evaluate death rotes from any cause at two years. Results The study included 160 consecutive patients with a mean age of 87 ± 2.1 years （range from 85 to 94 years） and a mean logistic EuroScoRE of 18.8% ± 11.2% with 57 （35.6%） patients scoring 〉 20%. Procedural success rate was 97.5%, with 25 （15.6%） patients experiencing acute complications with major bleeding （the most frequent）. Global mortality rate during hospitalization was 8.8% （n = 14） and 30-day mortality rate was 10% （n = 16）. Median follow up period was 252.24± 232.17 days. During the follow-up period, 28 （17.5%） patients died （17 of them due to cardiac causes）. The estimated two year overall and cardiac survival rates using the Kaplan-Meier method were 71% and 86.4%, respectively. cox proportional hazard regression showed that the variable EuroScoRE ≥ 20 was the unique vari- able associated with overall mortality. conclusions TAVI is safe and effective in a selected population of very elderly patients. our findings support the adoption of this new procedure in this complex group of patients.

In this work, we use the finiteness of the mordell-weil group and the Riemann Roch spaces to give a geometric parametrization of the set of algebraic points of any given degree over the field of rational numbers Q on curve c3 (11): y11 = x3 (x-1)3. This result is a special case of quotients of Fermat curves cr,s (p) : yp = xr(x-1)s, 1 ≤ r, s, r + s ≤ p-1 for p = 11 and r = s = 3. The results obtained extend the work of Gross and Rohrlich who determined the set of algebraic points on c1(11)(K) of degree at most 2 on Q.
